The
bond
of
RIENDSHIPS
For freshmen and transfer students, this year proved to be a
time of exciting new experiences and relationships. For seniors,
this year was a last attempt to prove themselves worthy of a life in
the real world. But for the majority of the students at Harding,
this was a year of taking "the road less traveled."
With students from all SO states and 43 foreign countries, many
here at Harding have had to face the hardships ofleaving home for
the first time and joining a new world of independence. Even for
veteran students, leaving home can still be difficult. Knowing
that they would not see their families for months or even years,
many foreign students courageously decided to come, too.
Being the first in one's family to attend college is also a reality
for many Harding students. They face the pressure of creating a
new life for themselves and convincing their families that they
should be here. Some of these students even work to support
themselves all four years, receiving their true payment when they
walk across the stage and receive their diplomas.
Finally, for those whose families are not Christians, attending
Harding often brings ridicule. But regardless of one's walk in life,
all Harding students have chosen "the road less traveled."

Ryan Shephard (president), Heather Troutwine (vice president)
and Kellye Gooch (secretary/treasurer) served as this
year's senior class officers. With graduation comes future plans
and reflections on the last four years spent at Harding. A May
graduate, Troutwine will stay in Searcy after graduation. In the
future, she hopes to work for Harding alongside her husband,
Rich Little, and to lead various campaigns with him. Troutwine 's
reflections of her two years at Harding center around serving
God. "1 spent two years at a state school before coming to
Harding, " she said. "Harding showed me what 1 was put on
earth for - to serve God." Gooch, who graduates in December,
1996, hopes to go to graduate school and get her master's in
counseling. Gooch said that the friendships that she has made
are the one thing that she will remember most about Harding

Freeze:
Moonlighting as security offi cers, at least
10 students on the Hardi ng campus patrolled
the campus at night.
The student workers shared the same responsibilities
as the full-time security officers.
They rode around in the patrol car and
also used the two latest additions to the security
patrol, bicycles and a golf cart, looking for
would-be offenders.
Of course, not just anybody could be a
security officer. Lott Tucker, vice president
fo r finance, said that Harding security prefers
students who are older and experienced in
law enforcement or have previous military
experience, such as senior Wayne Westerholm.
Westerholm's previous experience consists of
time spent in the Army.
Although Westerholm and others have had
previous experience, they still receive training.
Each semester they are required to take
an eight-hour course offered through the
Searcy Police Department and taught by a
certified teacher from an FBI school, which
teaches CPR training and info rms the students
of their responsibilities as officers.
Senior Wayne Westerholm lives double life
as student by day and security guard by night
Workriig the night shift would seem to
posea problem for students with several classes
and lots of homework. Westerholm admitted
that he does have to juggle his ti me. He is
enrolled in nine hours of credit and works
about 37 to 40 hours a week as a security
officer.
The most common violation Westerholm
encountered involved curfew. "We have more
problems with the guys than the gi rls. Usually,
we catch guys who have gotten out of
their dorms after curfew or who are outside
messing with cars," he said. "No matter what
the situation, I always assume that the people
are going to cause trouble."
For the most part, Westerholm found that
most offende rs, when caught, owned up to the
fact that they had broken Harding rules and
did not give him a hard time.
Although often unseen, nighttime security
guards were assets to the campus and the
student body as they patrolled in the dark,
protecting the campus at night while most
were asleep.

discuss a biblical issue during the Timothy Club retreat. The
retreat was held during the fall semester at Camp Tahkodah.
Open to the public, the retreat gave the Bible majors an opportunity
to get to know the Bible faculty and to see them as more
than professors, according to Kent lobe, president of Youth
Corps. "It was an incredible bonding experience," lobe said.
Campfire devos, small group discussions and speakers werejust
some of the events that took place during the weekend retreat.
According to lobe, the small group discussions gave the retreat
participants an opportunity to talk about what was on the
hearts. The faculty also participated in the small groups. Don
McLaughlin was the main speaker. "We try to pick a speaker
each year who will cover the problems that Bible and Youth

Married Life:
How many students were on the verge of
asking a girl out when a glance at her left
hand spared them a great deal of embarrassment
That tell-tale ring was not a rare sight on
campus, but few people realized how many
students were married. It was common for
students to get married during their years at
Harding, and this change required a lot of
adjusting for many couples.
Amy Katon, a senior from Brighton, Colo.,
had to get used to cooking all the time after
she and her husband, Bobby, were married
last August. "It took a lot of extra time
finding things to cook that we both like and
that are at least somewhat healthy," she said.
Another senior, Kyle Klein, was surprised
at the amount of time it took to keep things
clean. "In the dorm we never vacuumed or
cleaned the bathroom," he said. Klein and
his wife, Leslie, were high school sweethearts
and decided to get married after their second
year at Harding in 1994.
Leaving the dorm was not easy for Katon
either. "I really like living in our own apart-

ment, but1 miss having all my friends nearby
like I did when I lived in the dorm." Leslie
Klein agreed. "I'm glad I got to live in the
dorm before I got married because I made
friendships there that I never would have
been able to make otherwise. Now I don't
have as many acquaintances, but I have a
deeper relationship with one person," she
added with a smile.
Time managemef>t- was another issue
married students had to deal with more often
than most single students. Senior Lois
Voyles was not only married, but she had
three school-aged children. Both she and
her husband, Larry, were taking classes and
keeping very busy, but her view of the situation
remained positive. "Even while taking a
full load of classes, it's possible to concentrate
on family as well as school," she said.
The Kleins also had to cope with the busy
schedule of taking a full load of classes and
working 15 to 25 hours a week. ''You are very
busy," Kyle said about attending school while
being married, "but it can be done."

Entrepeneurs:
Ambition ... devotion ... an idea ... that's
what it takes to start a business. As a student,
the drive to work for yourself might be found
after a semester of work-study in the cafeteria.
Or maybe the cash flow has been cut off
from mom and dad. Whatever the reason,
some students at Harding decided that being
an entrepreneur was the path they would take
to raise their necessary funds.
Brian Snow, a senior math major, became
involved in a network marketing company
called Excel, a national long-distance telephone
company.
Snow worked an average of 12 hours each
week and lived on the income. He found his
schedule more flexible than if he were working
a regular job. "] used to work in a
restaurant and had to work around school.
With Excel, ] work when] want to," he said.
This did mean that Snow had to be more
motivated to work without someone telling
him what to do. "Starting any business takes
self-motivation and independence," he said.
Snow stayed motivated because he had a
goal in mind. He wanted to have a secure

summer, paying off his Stafford loans, and
becoming a missions supporter. "] will be
able to do all this with Excel because] continue
to get paid in the future for the work ]

Fellow student entrepeneur Stacy Ferrell
started his own lawn mowing business in
July, 1995. He invested about $1300 to begin,
but he made about $400 a week during the
summer. "Not only did] make a $1600 to
$1700 return on my investment,] was able to
make enough money for school this fall. ]
still have some of my clients left, so ] can
continue to make money for the rest of the
year," he said.
Ferrell was motivated to mow lawns so
that he could make more than minimum
wage. "] can make more than what an employer
can pay and still pay my bills. Of
course ," Ferrell said, "even if your business
isn't successful, remember that the experience
is well worth it."

While en route to a track meet, Heather Allison drove past a
herd of bison, which still roam the fields of certain parts of
Arkansas and have played an important role in the history of
Harding. According to Dr. Clifton Ganus, the bison was first
affiliated with the school in 1926, when the school was still in
Morrilton. "In 1925, a football team was started at the Morrilton
campus, " Dr. Ganus said. "When it began, it was just called the
Harding College football team. Then in 1926, the football team
was given the name 'Bisons, ' because of the great herds of bison
in the area. " In the 1927 Petit Jean, the football team used a
picture of a bison as the background for its photograph. The

A Passion for Acting:
In her own words. she's "direct," she's
"confident" and she's "sometimes quiet."
She's Maria Brooks, a Harding senior with a
passion for the dramatic arts - a passion that
has permeated her life.
Brooks said her involvement in the arts
can be traced back to her parents. "My
parents believed that each child should excel
in something. So, whenever any of my brothers
or sisters or 1 became interested in something,
they would let us try it. 1 chose dance
when 1 was in grade school. My parents
encouraged me all the way. 1 didn't get active
in theater until I entered junior high," Brooks
said.
As a theater major at Harding, Brooks has
acted, directed, choreographed and done
some technical work. Of these four areas, she
said her favorite is choreography. "Acting
used to be my favorite area of theater. Feeling
the hot lights and hearing the applause
after a performance used to really thrill me.
lt still does, but now 1 enjoy working out the
choreography for a performance even more.
Although Brooks described her Harding
Spotlight

experienc,,~s being "great," she said she had
originally planned to go to another school. "I
didn't know 1 was coming to Harding until
two weeks before school started. 1 was planning
to go to Wagner, a performing arts
school in New York, on a ballet scholarship,"
Brooks said.
Looking back on her decision to come to
Harding, Brooks said she is glad that she
came - for more than one reason. "I've
gained so much theatrical experience here.
Also, the professors in the theater department
have taught me a lot and have been
wonderful influences in my life," she said.
Brooks said that being a student at Harding
has influenced her to see theater as more
than just a career. "Now that I've been at
Harding for a few years, 1 have decided to
treat theater as my mission field. 1 can find
lost souls just as easily inAmerican theater as
1 can in a foreign country," Brooks said.
Clearly, a passion for the arts which began
in her childhood is still alive and well in the
heart of Maria Brooks.

Miles Away:
Students work at relationships
despite the distance that separates
Distance can make or break a relationship.
In unusual circumstances, people find ways
to make the distance work for them. For two
people who have been best friends all of their
lives, putting forth a little effort is all it
requires to keep the friendship going. Other
relationships are more difficult.
Caroline Clements, a senior biology major,
has worked to keep her life full even with
her boyfriend thousands of miles away at
Harding University in Greece. "I didn't think
it was going to be as difficult as it has been,
and for the first few weeks, it wasn't. I guess
it hadn't registered that he was gone. When
the newness of the semester wore off, I really
started to miss him," she said.
Clements became more active with her
friends and developed really strong ties within
this group. According to Clements, staying
busy wards off a lot of the loneliness. "I didn't
want my friends to hear me whining about
how much I miss Luke. I want to be there for
them, too."
The hardest part of being away from her
boyfriend, according to Clements, is not being
able to-share the daily things with him. "I
really depend on him to help me sort through
a lot of my fee lings and a lot of the things
which are going on. I miss not discussing the
little things with him."
Jennifer Strader, a junior chemistry major
whose boyfriend is in the Air Force, has
similar feelings. "I think what I miss the most
is that he is my best friend and that! can't talk
to him about the little daily things."
Strader said that she knew it would be
difficult, and after three years of dating, she
said it gets harder every year.
"I think we were determined to work it
out. He told me to date if I found anyone in
whom I was interested. I figured that if
there's anything other than the distance which
makes it difficult to stay together, then there's
a reason," Strader said.
Couples who succeed with long-distance
relationships are living testimonies to the
proverbial saying that suggests that the harder
one works for something, the more it is appreciated.

Graduate student Scott Lloyd works on painting the set for
the Homecoming musical, The Secret Garden. Many students
donated their time to help create the various sets that were used
for the Homecoming musicals and Spring Sing. The set production
staff is made up of cast members, theater majors or "whoever
comes by and wants to help, "according to drama professor
Morris Ellis. "The cast members themselves make up most of/he
work force," Ellis said. The average time to build the set for the
Homecoming musical is seven weeks - from the painting of the
set to the hanging of the set. Forother shows, a set takes between
three and four weeks to create. "Some sets are done the day of
the show, " Ellis said. "It just depends on the show." According
to Ellis, some students come with high school experience while
others learn most of the skills on the job. "We show them how
to do it and let them go," Ellis said. "It's a hands-on learning

For your health:
Harding has developed a wonderful practice
of reaching out to people outside of the
"Harding family. " Harding encourages the
same type of actions in its students through
the wellness screenings which take place each
semester. This service is offered to those affiliated
with Harding and any citizen of Searcy
who would like to participate.
When the program began in 1990, it was
set up more as a health fair, with cholesterol
screening and information about exercise
being available, according to Jerry Myhan,
health missions coordinator. Now, the program
focuses on determining an individual's
risk for getting heart disease.
Stacy Oliver, a senior nursing major, said,
"We offer two options. Option one involves
blood work only. This allows us to see what
peoples' cholesterol levels are (whether they
are producing good or bad cholesterol), and
to check triglycerides (sugar levels) and glucose
and hemoglobin levels. Option two is a
total evaluation. We take height, weight, family
history and, of course, the blood work.

person, and' we counsel them on the results."
The wellness screenings are designed in
such a way that they give the nursing majors
hands-on experience. The students are very
active in the program by drawing blood,
taking blood pressure, assessing body fat,
etc. Oliver said, "I had taken blood before,
when I was in Africa, but I really feltlike I got
the hang of it during the well ness screenings."
Another first for Oliver was the counseling.
"I did a lot of counseling on how to
reduce cholesterol intake and lower body
fat."
Heath Evans, a senior nursing major, said
he had often practiced taking blood but never
on a real person. "It was so nerve-racking. I
was scared the most about blowing someone's
vein," he said. Evans estimated that he stuck
25 to 30 people and he said, "I even got to
stick my Bible teacher."
It was hoped that, through the we ll ness
screenings, students would learn to take steps
to avoid the health problems plaguing many
people today.

Taking a break:
Just what does a Harding student do when
the stress from studying becomes so great
that two plus two begins to equal five Sadly,
an extended vacation is usually not possible.
Instead, many try to find a way to take an
occasional break from the hard work, searching
for opportunities to relax, rejuvinate and
regroup.
Part of what keeps Masako Saito going
during those long study sessions is drinking
coffee and taking time for a walk to enjoy the
trees and birds. However, one of the favorite
releases for this sophomore from Chiba, Japan,
is her time in the kitchen. "I like cooking,
especially Japanese dishes and many kinds
of pasta/' Saito said. /lIt's nice, because you
know exactly what you want." Though she
often finds it time-consuming, Saito enjoys
the chance to focus on one thing and return
to her studies with renewed energy from the
food she prepares.
For Kerri Branch, a sophomore transfer
from the University of Central Arkansas in
Conway, the opportunity to get away for a
brief moment comes with a leisurely bike ride
Finding different ways
to relax from stressful studies
or listenini to something from her extensive
music collection. "I don't want to be studying
for a long time and then do something during
a break that would be a total waste of time,"
Branch said. "I like to stay active and keep my
mind active whenever I can. This way, even
though I've taken a break, I feel like I've
accomplished something."
Sometimes the escape is as easy as switching
one book for another. Many Monday
nights pass at the Searcy Public Librarywhen
students come for not only the quiet seclusion,
but for the best sellers. Though Monday
can be a depressing day to some, librarians
like Joyce Turley look forward to them. ''We
get a fairly steady group each week," Turley
said of the Harding regulars. Monday night is
our latest night, and it's great to be able to be
there for people who are always busy with
other things to do.
Although studying can take its toll, it is
the all-important breaks like these that can
help anyone keep things in perspective and
make cramming those facts a lot less taxing.

up for lost time in the spring semester. The
class spring project was a week of events
used to raise money for various charities.
Like the other class officers, the junior
officers found that, in times past, student
interest was not very high. "We hoped that
this week of events would encourage the
junior class to become more active with
their fellow class members and the student
body," president Lisa Thomas said.
Before becoming class president, Thomas
did not know many people in her class,
except for those she had met through Impact
andpledging. Thomas felt that she was
missing out on friendships with her own
classmates. She wanted to bring the junior
class together, because she felt that there
were others who did not know each other,
either. "I hoped that the officers this year
could create more unity among the junior

Preaching the word:
Bible majors gain experience
through area congregations
In Matthew 28:19-20, Jesus told his disciples
to go into the world and make disciples
of all nations, baptizing them in the name of
the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, teaching
them to obey everything he commanded.
Some students in the College of Bible and
Religion are currently doing just that.
Kent Jobe, a junior religious education
major, preaches every Sunday morning at
Spring Valley Church of Christ in Spring
Valley, Ark. What started as a volunteer
position at this smalll0-member congregation
has progressed into a weekly job.
Because the congregation is so small, it
has been open to many different ideas that
Jobe has presented to the them. One of the
more recent programs has centered on
church growth.
Since the 10 original members of the
church are elderly and the remaining worshipers
are Harding students, Jobe finds it a
challenge to preach a message in which .both
groups will be interested. "The message has
to be balanced so that it can relate to both the
old and young," he said. Learning to work
with the older members has been a positive
experience for Jobe.
Kevin Wells, a junior Bible major, also
preaches every Sunday, at the Lead Hill
Church of Christ, a small country church
150 miles from Searcy.

very beneficial. "Preaching every Sunday
morning and evening and preparing these
sermons has helped me to keep studying the
Bible in a way that is applicable to my life," he
said.
Even though this experience has been
wonderful for Wells, he cautions other Bible
majors who want to preach regularly. "I have
had to make a lot of sacrifices, such as not
hanging out with my friends on Saturday
evening because I need to prepare for the
sermon I will give the next morning. It is a
heavy responsibility, but it is a great way to
learn and help people at the same time."
Jobe encouraged students to "fi nd something
or some place to be involved," and
"learn from it."

sponsored the event, which was held in
coordination with the Alumni Office. Between
30 and 40 people, many who were
Harding students and alumni, ran in the
race. The race was a 10K run, whose path
took the runners around the Harding campus
with the finish line at the Heritage
Center. A $50 prize was awarded to the
male and female winners of the 10K run,
and a $15 prize was awarded to the winners
of the different age divisions. Junior
Matt Quigley won the 10K race, running it
in 36 minutes and 56 seconds. Alumnus
Cliff Clark placed second in the race, but
won the over-50 age division. A two-mile
fun run around the Harding campus was
also held for those who did not want to

Smile:
Ident-A-Child, a fund-raiser sponsored by
the National Broadcasting Society (NBS) and
AERho, Harding's chapter of NBS, was a
great success, according to Dr. Lou
Butterfield, faculty adviser. The event, held
on October 21 and 22, reached 450 children.
The services offered at Ident-A-Child were
free to anyone who came. Participants in the
event ranged in age from a few months to
children in their teens.
The children were fingerprinted, and the
fingerprints were given to the parents so
that, in case of an emergency, they would
have them on file to give to police. As the
children were videotaped against a height
chart, prints of their voices were also recorded
on tape. The videotapes are being

The idea behind Ident-A-Child was to help
the parents have the information collected
that police would need in the event that the
child is missing. Having this information on
hand enables police to immediately start looking
for a child. "It would be terrible if anyone

had to use this, but if the need does arise, I
hope it will be helpful in finding the child,"
freshman advertising major G reg Massey said.
The Ident-A-Child program was deemed
such a worthy idea that Searcy's mayor proclaimed
October 21 and 22 "Ident-A-Child
Weekend." The mayor's office and the Searcy
Police Department also sponsored the event,
along with Central Arkansas Hospital.
Parents of participating children completed
forms with information about the
children's weights, unusual birthmarks and
addresses. Then, children were fingerprinted,
and their fingerprints went directly onto the
information sheet. During their videotaping,
children were asked questions about
their name, school, pets - anything to get
them to talk so that their voiceprint would be
on the tape.
The $2000 raised from the two business
sponsors was used to assist NBS and AERho
in deferring costs of the group's trip to Los
Angeles for the national convention of the
organization this spring.

Senior Ferne Howe paints the face of a
child during the Inner City Carnival held
during the fall semester. The carnival was
coordinated on behalf of the River City
Ministries, an outreach program of the Levy
Church of Christ in Little Rock. Started by
Senior Heidi Burkham and alumnus Chris
Phillips, the Inner City Carnival was in its
second year. "This year, the North Little
Rock Housing Authority supported the carnival
by donating $2,000," director and
Harding student Allison Rector said. This
proved to be a major benefit for the carnival
. . "Last year, we had to raise all of the
money for the carnival ourselves, " Rector
said. The carnival was held in the Silver
City housing development in Little Rock.
More than 300 Harding students donated
their time to help with various activities,
such as face painting, a dunking booth, a
cake walk and a petting zoo. The purpose of
the carnival was to get the inner city children
involved with the River City Ministries,
which teaches the Bible to 40 children

Under the auspices of the Foreign Language
Department, the Spanish devotionals,
conducted every Wednesday night in the
Ganus building, provided Spanish-speaking
students an attractive alternative to worshiping
in English.
The Spanish devotionals began during
the first year the Walton Scholarship students
came to Harding. The devotionals are
comparable to the College Church of Christ's
"Home Bible Studies." Spanish professor
Ava Conley and her husband, Bill, wanted to
provide this experience for the Spanish-speaking
students. "When the Spanish devotionals
first began, my husband and 1 decided to
participate in them, and at times, offer guidance
to the students who led the devotionals.
Recently, faculty member Bill Richardson
and his wife, Holly, decided that they also
wanted to participate and offer guidancewhen
it's appropriate," Conley said.
According to Conley, there are two primary
goals of the Spanish devotionals: to
give the Latin American students an opportunity
to worship in their native language,

and to give other students who have learned
or are still learning Spanish an opportunity
to more efficiently minister to the Latin
American students.
The Spanish devotionals have sparked the
formation of smaller groups that meet at
other times during the week for such things '
as prayer, Bible study and worship.
"I began to participate in the Spanish
devotionals in the fall of 199 1, my freshman
year at Harding, and have continued to do so
to this day," senior Tamara Paden said.
Paden told why she initially got involved.
"My parents have been medical missionaries
for several years, first in Central America and
then in the Dominican Republic. Thus, because
of my upbringing, 1 naturally wanted
to develop friendships with the Latin American
students as we ll as influence them to live
for Christ. Participating in the Spanish devotionals
has helped to make that possible."
The Spanish devotionals have successfully
taken root in the predominantly English-speaking
soil of Harding University.

students at Harding. Held during the fall
semester in conjunction with World Evangelism
Week in chapel, the World Tour exposed
students to the needs of the church in
various sites throughout the world. Missionaries
in residence Gordon Hogan and
Mark Berryman created the World Tour to
help inform students of the missionary work
that is being done in other countries. The
displays at the World Tour offered pictures,
brochures and lists, where interested students
could sign up for further information.
Students who had previously done mission
work were also on hand to answer questions.
Some of the highlighted countries
included Australia, Italy, New Guinea and
Germany. The World Tour had been presented
in years past but was called '~ Taste
