Outstanding Music Educator
The North Carolina Symphony invites you—students, teachers,
colleagues, parents, family and friends—to nominate the North
Carolina music teacher who has made a difference in your life for the
North Carolina Symphony’s 2012 Maxine Swalin Award for
Outstanding Music Educator.
This recognition and $1,000 award is presented annually to a
North Carolina music teacher who:
• Makes a lasting difference in the lives of students of all abilities
and backgrounds
• Serves the community in an exemplary manner as a role model in
music education
• Instills a love for music in children
• Inspires students to reach appropriately high musical standards
A recipient of the North Carolina Award for Public Service in 1989 and
North Caroliniana Society Award in 2003, Maxine Swalin was one of the
state’s most tireless advocates for the arts. Together with her husband
Dr. Benjamin Swalin, North Carolina Symphony Music Director from
1939-72, she worked to establish the Symphony’s children’s concert
division. Largely because of the Swalins’ efforts, Senate Bill No. 248 (“The
Horn Tootin’ Bill”) passed, providing state support for the Symphony’s
education programs. Sixty-three years later, the program still brings live
symphonic music free to children throughout North Carolina as part of
one of the most extensive education programs of any U.S. orchestra.
This award honors her unparalleled commitment to music education
by honoring teachers who share her passion for live instrumental music
and her skill at passing that passion on to students of all ages.
Nominees for the Swalin Award are also considered for the Jackson
Parkhurst Award for Special Achievement, a $500 recognition granted
in years in which there is a strong second candidate. The Parkhust Award
is named after the former North Carolina Symphony Director of
Education for his longstanding service to the state’s young people.

award criteria (left, in bulletpoints) and submit three to ten
letters of support from students, colleagues and members of
the community. (Applications with fewer than 3 letters of
support will not be considered.)
• Submit only one form per candidate.
• Support letters may be sent under separate cover.
• Candidates nominated in prior years must be re-nominated
to be considered.
• Photos, brief videos of instructional technique, articles and
other supporting materials are welcome
