Household Hazardous <strong>Waste</strong><br />
(HHW)<br />
Hazardous materials are identified with one or more<br />
<strong>of</strong> these symbols.<br />
Common HHW items include:<br />
• Propane tanks/ cylinders<br />
• Batteries (household, rechargeable,<br />
and automotive)<br />
• Paints, varnish, solvents, caulking and glue<br />
• Household cleaners, such as bleach,<br />
oven cleaners and drain cleaners<br />
• Energy efficient bulbs and fluorescent tubes/ bulbs<br />
• Hair dye, nail polish and nail polish remover<br />
• Pharmaceuticals<br />
• Syringes (place in a rigid, puncture<br />
resistant container)<br />
• Thermostats containing mercury<br />
• Fuels, antifreeze and brake fluid<br />
• Used motor oil and filters<br />
Disposal instructions:<br />
DO NOT put hazardous materials in the garbage, down a drain or on the<br />
ground. DO NOT put hazardous material in your Blue Box or Green Bin.<br />
Take them to one <strong>of</strong> York Region's Household Hazardous <strong>Waste</strong><br />
Depots, free <strong>of</strong> charge, listed on page 3. Residential sources only.<br />
Please follow these safety requirements:<br />
• Keep materials in original containers or ensure that the<br />
contents are clearly labelled<br />
• Don’t mix different types <strong>of</strong> paint or products together<br />
• No ammunition, PCBs, asbestos, radioactive wastes or<br />
explosives accepted (other than aerosols and propane cylinders)<br />
• Tightly cap all containers<br />
