Summary and objectives<br />

The aim is to mitigate the negative effects of food<br />

crises. The most vulnerable groups have increased<br />

their resilience and responses to food insecurity<br />

through the provision of safety nets and suitable<br />

technologies (such as restoration of irrigation facilities,<br />

seed banks, training).<br />

Target groups<br />

5 550 families, including small and marginal cultivators<br />

(2 500), women-headed households (1 100),<br />

landless agricultural labourers (1 200) and the most<br />

vulnerable, e.g. widows and disabled people (550).<br />

Development Councils (CDCs), 367 women subcommittees,<br />

170 seed multiplication farmers and<br />

16 Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock<br />

provincial staff.<br />

Final beneficiaries<br />

5 085 households (35 595 people) in Balkh province,<br />

affected by drought and food insecurity.<br />

Summary and objectives<br />

To contribute towards mitigation of food insecurity in<br />

the remote areas of northern Afghanistan by increasing<br />

the resilience of the local population towards<br />

price instability through improved agricultural production,<br />

and to strengthen food availability and<br />

accessibility in Balkh province by supporting both<br />

producer and business groups, and by improving<br />

the infrastructure as well as capacity development<br />

of local authorities.<br />

Vulnerable families in the targeted areas and the<br />

Provincial Department of Mail, District administrations,<br />

and Community Development Councils.<br />
