The Paradise Main Street 

Festival, originally planned 

for Sept. 25, had to be canceled 

due to heavy rain and 

lightning, but it has been 

rescheduled in conjunction 

with the Paradise Fire Department’s 

Annual Fish Fry 

Fundraiser Saturday. 

The Festival is sponsored 

by the Paradise Historical 

Society each year. 

“We very much appreciate 

the invitation by the 

Paradise Fire Department 

to combine our (event) with 

theirs,” said Edna Wood, 

president of the society. “We 

feel it will benefit both organizations 

and will give the 

local community the opportunity 

to have double the 

fun.” 

There is no admission 

charge to the festival, which 

will include most of the original 

line-up of entertainers 

and vendors. The festival 

Pi Kappa held their monthly meeting on 

Oct. 7 at the home of Marti Hines. Hines 

served finger foods and dessert. President 

Carolyn Marlett conducted the business 

meeting followed by the program by Hines 

still includes children’s activities, 

a live auction, raffles 

and an antique car parade. 

A presentation by the 

Veterans Association and 

the quilt show will not be 

included in the rescheduled 

festival. 

The festival begins at 1 

p.m. The Paradise VFD will 

start serving fried-fish dinners 

at 4. The cost of the 

dinner is by donation. The 

Brandon Gentry Band will 

cap off the evening during 

the final hour from 6-7.

Dear Neil: We are losing 

live oaks along our driveway. 

Two have died this past summer,

good. Their leaves turn brown, and 

the trunks are dry and brittle. These 

were planted five years ago. We water 

them every two weeks. In fact, we put 

a sprinkler system in two years ago. 

Woodpeckers riddled the trees three 

years ago during the winter. We’ve kept

them away since, but now the trees are 

declining. What could the problem be

Obviously, we all need to be

If I were to guess, I’d wonder

intervals with a sprinkler 

system might be enough. 

Since the problem started in 

the summer when it was hot 

and dry, there’s very little 

chance of their having been 

over-watered. You might monitor the 

sprinklers, to see if the trees with the 

issues get equal amounts of water at 

each irrigation. 

Dear Neil: My St. Augustine has 

been overtaken by crabgrass. Short of

So many people mistake dallisgrass 

and call it crabgrass or Johnsongrass. 

St. Augustine is the dominant 

grass that should crowd out all weeds 

– except dallisgrass and nutsedge. 

If you have crabgrass, you should 

step up your maintenance program 

(watering, feeding and mowing) for the 

St. Augustine, and it should crowd out 

the crabgrass. Crabgrass is an annual 

weed, so you can apply a pre-emergent 

weedkiller in early March, repeated 

in early June to keep its seeds from 

sprouting.

Last fall trees 

y CLAIRE CURRY 

For the last two months 

’ve been going over our 

ommon trees. We’ve now 

overed oaks, hackberry, 

esquite, honeylocust, wilow, 

cottonwood and perimmon. 

This time we’ll cover a 

ast assortment of comon 

trees: Eastern red cear 

(Juniperus virginiana), 

lack walnut (Juglans niga), 

pecan (Carya illinoiensis), 

American elm (Ulus 

americana), slippery 

lm (Ulmus rubra), cedar 

lm (Ulmus crassifolia), and 

um bumelia (Sideroxylon 

anuginosum). 

Eastern red cedar is a 

very familiar tree with 

several surprising aspects 

to its life. It is native, but 

often invasive due to fire 

suppression. The blue “berries” 

that we often see Cedar 

Waxwings, American 

Robins, and Yellow-rumped 

Warblers eating are actually 

the female cones. 

Pollen from the 

male trees causes 

a good portion of 

us to be miserable 

with allergies every 

year. In late 

winter and early 

spring, you can 

bump a branch 

and see the clouds 

of pollen fly up. 

Let’s go nuts 

now! Black walnut 

and pecan are 

both in the walnut 

family (Juglandaceae). 

They 

have similar large 

compound leaves (many 

small leaves on a stem). In 

the spring, both have long 

shaggy catkins made of 

the tiny green flowers. This 

time of year, the pecan has 

its familiar, long oval nuts, 

while walnuts have round

nuts. 

We have several species of 

elms, both native 

and introduced. 

I’m just going to 

talk about a few of 

the most common 

native species. All 

have oval leaves 

with a pointed 

tip and a toothed 

edge. 

American elm 

can be distinguished 

by its 

bark. If you pull off 

a small piece, you 

can see a pattern 

of dark and pale 

layers. Slippery 

elm is also known 

for its bark; it is somewhat 

slimy inside. You don’t want 

to go digging into the tree’s 

inner bark, though, so just 

note that it lacks American’s 

outer layers. 

Finally, the cedar elm has 

lots of very small leaves 

(usually about 1-2 inches 

long) and flat “wings” on its 

smaller branches. Some will 

grow near cedars, giving us 

the common name. 

I’ve saved gum bumelia 

for last. I’m rather fond of 

this somewhat obscure tree. 

It has leaves superficially 

similar to a live oak’s (round 

and shiny) but it is deciduous, 

losing them in the winter. 

Some years we have a 

bane of caterpillars eating 

out the leaves and leaving 

behind a webby mess. 

Other members of this 

family (Sapotaceae) live in 

the tropics, and indeed the 

gum bumelia (or “chittumwood”) 

is found at its farthest 

north in Missouri. 

As fall continues to bring 

us cooler weather, the trees 

will begin to turn colors and 

lose their leaves. Enjoy the 

fall colors and admire their 

stately shapes, intricate 

branches and varied leaves.

Jack County Range Tour Thursday 

The annual Jack County Range Tour, 

sponsored by Texas AgriLife Extension 

Service and NRCS, will be Thursday, 

Oct. 21. This year’s tour will feature 

the Bret Hull Ranch in northeastern 

Jack County. 

“Bret is an excellent steward of the 

land and has been utilizing NRCS 

programs for many years,” said Matt 

Gregory, NRCS district conservationist 

for Jack County. “This tour will give 

participants the chance to see what 

multiple years of good management 

can do to improve grass quality and 

overall range health.” 

Topics that will be discussed on the 

tour include native and improved grass 

management, brush management, utilizing 

NRCS programs and plant identification. 

After a barbecue lunch, FSA County 

Director Mike McDonald will provide 

important FSA updates that producer’s 

need to know, and Gregory will discuss 

NRCS updates and program changes. 

The tour will begin with registration 

at the Jack County Fair Barn at 8:30 

a.m. The fee is $15 per person and includes 

lunch and three CEU’s for pesticide 

license holders. 

At 9 a.m., the bus will depart for the 

ranch until noon. After lunch, McDonald 

and Gregory will give their presentations 

at the Fair Barn.

What’s the greatest threat to today’s

Car crashes continue to be the 

eading cause of death among 

eens, killing 4,054 teenagers ages 

3 to 19 in 2008. The combination 

f inexperience and distractions 

an be deadly. 

Distractions are not limited 

o cell phones; studies have conrmed 

a connection between teen 

rivers transporting peer passeners 

and an increased risk of fatal 

rashes. In fact, adding just one 

een passenger doubles the fatal 

rash risk for a teen driver. 

Although the risk of a crash 

ncreases with each additional 

assenger, recent research shows that few 

eens recognize the impact passengers have 

n driver safety. In a recent survey of high 

chool students, only 10 percent of teens 

new that carrying teen or adolescent pasengers 

increased crash risks. 

That’s why this year’s National Teen 

river Safety Week, Oct. 17-23, is addressng 

the risk of teens driving teens. The Ride 

ike A Friend campaign is being rolled out 

n schools nationwide to encourage passener 

behaviors that can reduce the crash risk 

or teens. 

“The Ride Like A Friend. Drive Like You 

are” program was developed with the help 

f teens and focuses on increasing teens’ 

wareness of how passengers can be helpful 

nd not harmful in the car and what drivers 

an do to make this happen.

up. Although seat belts have proven effective 

in reducing deaths and injuries from 

motor vehicle crashes, teens have the lowest 

seat belt use of any age group. 

In Texas from 2003 to 2008, 

52 percent of teens killed in car 

crashes were not buckled up. 

Most teen passengers who die 

on the road are riding with teen 

drivers. Teens should not ride 

with peers for at least the first six 

months of independent driving. 

Texas is fortunate to have a 

Graduated Driver’s License law. 

After the initial phase of a learner’s 

permit, teen drivers must 

complete six months with a provisional 

license that restricts drivers 

to no more than one passenger 

in the vehicle under the age of 21 

who is not a family member. During 

this time, the use of a cell phone is also 

prohibited. 

It also restricts driving between midnight 

and 5 a.m. unless for employment, schoolrelated 

activity or a medical emergency. 

Driving at night increases the risk to teen 

drivers. The fatal crash rate of 16-year-olds 

is nearly twice as high at night. 

Parents are encouraged to help implement 

the “Ride Like A Friend. Drive Like 

You Care” program at their school.

Use a tank sprayer, and 

direct the herbicide down 

onto the weed’s leaves. If 

you sense that it’s beading 

up and running off, include 

one drop (only one drop!) of 

liquid dishwashing detergent 

to help hold it in place. 

Be patient. It will take 2-3 

weeks to kill the weed. Treat 

before it turns any cooler.

their first tendency upon

grown. This year, Southard 

has 75 runners currently 

pre-registered, which is well 

ahead of last year. She is anticipating 

more than 200 for 

the chip-timed race. 

“We’re hoping for that 

good of a turnout,” Southard 

said. “People come out, enjoy 

it and want to help. They 

also have a good time doing 

it, which is important to me. 

“I went into this with no 

race-director experience. It’s 

been pretty fun. The whole 

event has been very rewarding 

to Mark and I, and having 

so many people help.”

During homeroom, each class places its

All schools in Northwest ISD have been 

provided new containers for the implementation 

of the new, single-stream recycling 

program, meaning that all recyclables, from 

cardboard boxes to plastic bottles, can be recycled 

in the same container.

Managing Pain to Get 

“Back in the Game” 

“No pain, no gain!” 

Every athlete – including Dr. Chad B. 

Stephens, D.O. – has heard it repeatedly. 

As co-founder and president of North 

Texas Spine and Sport in Decatur, he is determined 

that his patients learn the meaning 

of “No pain. Get active. Again.” 

Fit and trim, Dr. Stephens specializes 

in “interventional” pain management as it 

relates to sports medicine. 

“Nobody else in Wise County does quite 

what I do,” he said. The treatment he offers 

had been available only from doctors hours 

away in the Metroplex. 

As North Texas Spine and Sport cofounder 

Robert E. Stapp explained: “It 

didn’t seem right that people in pain should 

have to fight traffic to get relief.” 

“We know we can offer that same level 

of total treatment without the drive,” Dr. 

Stephens said. “We do the procedure and 

all the follow-through in Decatur, which 

helps prevent further problems.” 

Diagnosis by “multi-specialty doctors 

under one roof” gives patients immediate 

access to “treatment of the issue itself instead 

of just the symptoms,” Stapp said. 

“Real medicine is all about finding the 

root-cause of a problem and curing the patient 

with as little intrusion on their life as 

possible,” he noted. 

Board certified in pain management 

and sports medicine, Dr. Stephens earned 

his bachelor’s degree from Abilene Christian 

University. At Des Moines University 

in Iowa he was class president all four 

years he studied osteopathic medicine. 

He has treated athletes at all levels. He 

was team physician for two colleges and 

a high school, and he helped run regional 

SportOne Athletic Training, earning the 

title of “Top Doc” for upstate Indiana. 

While working in a multi-specialty 

practice with 29 other doctors at Fort 

Wayne, Dr. Stephens decided how his own 

practice – emphasizing care on a more personal 

level – would operate. 

“Rob (Stapp) fine-tuned my ideas,” he 

said. His longtime friend would become 

chief executive officer of that practice. 

Stapp’s own firm, OP-EX Direct Results 

Inc., is known for helping businesses focus 

on delivering value-enhanced results. 

They researched the best location for 

North Texas Spine and Sport for a year. 

While completing training in Fort Worth 

six years ago, Dr. Stephens had “moonlighted” 

at Decatur’s “old” hospital. Even then he 

detected a “medical boom” was underway. 

He saw sports-minded Wise County 

as a great place to practice medicine, raise 

his family – and play a little ball himself. 

By the time Stephens and Stapp began 

searching for the medical support they 

would require, Wise Regional Health System 

had opened its new facility. 

“The hospital seemed much bigger than 

what I had seen elsewhere in comparablysized 

communities,” Dr. Stephens recalled. 

“I saw the potential for growth. 

“I decided, ‘Now is the time to do this.’” 

With wholehearted support from 

North Texas Bank, he opened his practice 

in March. It is within jogging distance of 

Wise Regional’s Fit-N-Wise rehab center. 

“It offers everything you could possibly 

want, including a therapeutic pool,” he noted. 

“All the package is right here.” 

So far, Dr. Stephens has performed 300 

procedures at Wise Regional. He performed 

the hospital’s first spinal-cord stimulator 

implant on a patient who hadn’t responded 

to conventional surgery.” 

“The hospital has been very responsive 

to our needs on short notice,” he said, 

“And we appreciate the support of all the 

primary-care doctors across Wise County.” 

Dr. Stephens considers North Texas 

Bank as a part of his carefully-chosen 

team. “We include the partners we believe 

will help us succeed. 

“Before we picked our bank we did 

our research. Again and again, we were 

told we needed to talk to Andrew Rottner 

(president of North Texas Bank).” 

Dr. Stephens continued: “Andrew understands 

what we are doing and thinks outside 

the box. He makes himself available. 

He even got our lights turned on! 

“Andrew Rottner gives honest advice.” 

Dr. Stephens predicts a long relationship 

of working together to create a “regional 

pain-management and sports-medicine 

center of excellence in Wise County.”

NHS Academy students create 

new snack food, develop marketing plan 

Students in Northwest High School’s Academy of Science, 

echnology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) took 

n the snack-foods industry with a recent project in Casey 

elmick’s biology class. 

Challenged to create a healthy and appealing food prodct 

for teenagers, students developed snack products that 

et the Texas Public School Nutrition Policy. To determine 

ow their products would support cell structure and funcion, 

students investigated biomolecules — protein, lipids 

nd carbohydrates — and cell processes, or how cells use 

iomolecules to support life. 

Once students developed their new snack food, they creted 

a marketing plan and presented their product to a 

anel of judges. 

The results of the Snack Attack competition ranged from 

rammy Gummies, a fruit snack in the shape of favorite 

rtists like Lady Gaga, to Super Bar, a sweet treat featurng 

pretzels and peanut butter covered with a thin layer of 

hocolate. The student teams presented their creations on 

ept. 30 and Oct. 1.

broader audience, Northwest ISD has launched a YouTube 

hannel and a new athletic podcast series.

In an effort to encourage lifelong readers and improve 

eading abilities, schools across Northwest ISD are chalenging 

students to read one million words. 

While the challenge varies between schools, students are

being encouraged to read a specific number of books based 

on grade-level criteria, which will equal approximately one 

million words. 

Students and classes will complete daily reading logs, 

and teachers will hold reading conferences with students to 

check the status of their logs.

Trail middle schools, and Clara Love, Justin, J. Lyndal 

Hughes, Prairie View and Seven Hills elementary schools.

Last Saturday, the Northwest Texans 

played Keller Central beneath a deep blue 

afternoon sky. 

As the marching band performed at halftime, 

our roaming photographer captured 

the scene through reflection. 

The deep tones issue emotions and create 

altered moods. While in 

the musical mirror, a slight 

change in the angle creates 

a new perspective, a shifted 

reality. 

Earlier that morning, the band performed 

at the regional UIL marching band competition 

in Denton. Northwest, along with the 

Decatur and Bridgeport bands, all advanced 

to the area competition, which will take

George Heaton has had his fair share 

of health concerns in the last year. In 

fact, George has been in the hospital 

twice during that period. Each time after 

George’s hospitalization, he needed therapy 

and nursing care to get him where he needed 

to be in order to go home to be with his 

beautiful wife of 65 years. 

His first visit came after a battle with gout 

that left him bedfast; George had to endure 

treatments from the nursing staff, as well 

as working with the therapy staff at Senior 

Care in Bridgeport to get him back on 

his feet (literally). Senior Care’s Therapy 

Department was able to utilize e-stim 

through Accelerate Care Plus (ACP) in order 

to re-educate George’s muscle, allowing 

him to once again be able to walk. William

in Bridgeport, stated, “George was one of 

the hardest working patients I have ever 

had.” George proudly declared, “It’s a 

wonderful place, everyone treated me very well.” Then in August, George 

found himself back in the hospital, with pneumonia this time; on this go ‘round 

George decided to admit to the Senior Care in Decatur. After 14 days, he was back 

on his feet and ready to go back home to Alvord. George states with a little laugh, “I 

came in on a stretcher both times but I was able to WALK out of the facility.”
