A local business owner received 

a 15-year prison sentence 

Thursday for sexually assaulting 

his niece in 2006. 

The girl was 11 years old at 

the time of the assault. 

Mohammed Reza, 51, formerly 

of Decatur, stared straight 

ahead with a passive expression 

as Judge John Fostel read 

the jury’s verdict in 271st District 

Court. He also received 

a $10,000 fine. The state had 

asked the jury for a 50-year sentence 

for the charge, but family 

and friends of the victim were 

satisfied with the result. 

“The (district attorney’s office) 

has done a great job,” said 

Daisy Ali, the victim’s aunt and 

former wife of Reza, at the conclusion 

of the three-day trial. “I 

am proud to live in Decatur.” 

The victim’s mother, Farzana 

Siddiqua, said she believed justice 

had been served. 

After the sentence was announced, 

Fostel allowed the 

victim to give a victim’s impact 

statement directly to Reza.

to records made public this

GARDENER’S MAILBAG

Dear Neil: You asked if 

nyone knew what would 

trip guara leaves in your 

olumn a couple of weeks 

go. We grow it, and we 

found what we identified as 

sphinx moth larvae on the 

plants. We enjoy the moths, 

so we chose not to spray. 

Since then, we’ve also discovered 

other larvae in our 

garden, and they’re now 

emerging as bordered patch 

butterflies. Hope that information 

helps. 

Dear Neil: I live in a 

townhouse. We have mondograss, 

some type of small 

shrubs and a row of redtip 

photinias. We have to water 

twice a week when watering 

restrictions allow it, just 

to keep the plants alive. We 

also have a crape myrtle 

that looks fine all spring, but 

then starts dropping almost 

all of its leaves by summer. 

Is it getting too much water 

It never blooms. 

That actually sounds like 

it’s not getting enough water. 

You need to be soaking 

the soil to a depth of 5 or 6 

inches when you water. Double 

check, too, to be sure the 

leaves aren’t being troubled 

by aphids. Sometimes, we 

have to spray with a general-purpose 

insecticide to 

control them. 

Dear Neil: Some native 

plants grow in sun or 

shade, such as yaupon hollies, 

American beautyberries 

and cherry laurels. However, 

when landscapers put these 

in my yard, they died. The 

plants that were used had 

clearly been grown in the 

sun, and they couldn’t stand 

the change to the shade. 

When buying natives, can 

one specify that they need to 

have been grown in particular 

conditions 

I’ve never experienced 

a plant that was grown in 

the sun failing soon after 

it was planted into shade. 

Granted, some shrubs can’t 

handle the shade, but it usually 

takes six to 12 months 

for them to falter. By comparison, 

plants that are 

acclimated to shade will 

succumb to the sun within 

a few days if the change is 

drastic. My experience with 

American beautyberry over 

many years of growing it 

has been that it really needs 

the shade. Most nurserymen 

grow it in shadehouses. 

Suggestion: use “adapted” 

plants rather than insisting 

only on natives. After 

all, a plant is truly “native” 

only to the spot in which it 

is growing naturally. It may 

not be adapted just a few 

feet away. I have a photo I 

took of maidenhair ferns 

growing immediately beside 

a huge agave plant near a 

small waterfall and pool in 

Big Bend National Park in 

arid Brewster County. The 

plants are on the edge of a 

woodland, growing within 

30 inches of one another, yet 

neither could have survived 

where the other was growing. 

Dear Neil: Last summer, 

our front yard had a large 

brown patch in the St. Augustine. 

I sprayed it with 

a fungicide, but the grass 

didn’t recover until this 

spring. Should I spray now, 

before the fungus begins 

to appear again Should I 

spray the entire yard 

Odds are very, very small 

that this was brown patch. 

That fungus attacks the 

grass when it’s much cooler 

and wetter, usually not until 

October and November. Affected 

blades pull loose easily 

from the runners, and you 

can see where they have decayed. 

The disease is mainly 

of the blades, and the runners 

and roots remain alive. 

The grass should green up 

the next spring. Mid-summer 

browning usually happens 

in the hottest, sunniest 

part of the yard, and it’s 

usually due to chinch bugs. 

They cause the grass to 

look dry, yet watering won’t 

help. If you get down on 

your hands and knees and 

part the grass at the interface 

between healthy turf 

and dying grass, you’ll see 

the b-b-sized black insects 

with white diamonds on 

their backs. Use a generalpurpose 

turf insecticide to 

control them before they kill 

the grass. Wait until you see 

the actual symptoms of dry 

grass, but don’t let it go very 

long. Chinch bugs are really 

damaging – much more so 

than brown patch. 

Dear Neil: We live next to 

a vacant lot, and it’s loaded 

with Johnsongrass. How can 

we keep it from getting into 

our lawn 

Johnsongrass can’t stand 

close, lawn-height mowings, 

so it probably won’t ever get 

started. You can use MSMA 

to eliminate grasses from 

bermudagrass turf should 

you need to, but it cannot be 

used in St. Augustine.

HEMOCHROMATOSIS 

Hemochromatosis is an inherited 

genetic disorder that causes the body 

to absorb far too much iron. Although 

it is a disease most commonly 

associated with older adults, since it 

rarely manifests before middle age, 

juvenile hemochromatosis does 

sometimes occur. Hemochromatosis 

that occurs before the age of 30 can 

manifest in infancy or at any time 

throughout childhood. It can cause 

problems such as diabetes and heart 

arrhythmia, as well as problems 

with sexual development and later 

infertility. Symptoms of too much 

iron include fatigue, dramatic weight 

change, heart irregularities, joint 

pain, depression, skin discoloration, 

upper-right-quadrant abdominal pain, 

and, in girls, menstrual irregularities. 

Juvenile hemochromatosis is treated 

by regularly donating blood, which 

can slow or even reverse the disease.

most cases, costs are based 

on the applicant’s health history 

and can be expensive.

4-H is more than a club – it is young 

people getting ready for the future. In 

4-H, you will work with other people 

in a 4-H club, in your school or with 

another organization. 4-H’ers can also 

go to camps, show their work at fairs, 

travel, host youth from other countries, 

attend meetings and events with other 

young people, and much, much more. 

What will I do in 4-H 

4-H members choose projects that 

interest them. Texas has more than 40 

4-H projects to choose from. You attend 

meetings, participate in new learning 

experiences, and may be involved in 

making presentations and community 

service projects. You may also want to 

participate in 4-H camps the county 

fair or trips to other states and countries. 

How do I join 4-H 

Call your local office of Texas AgriLife 

Extension Service. It is listed in the 

phone book along with other county offices.

you to 4-H opportunities in your area. 

How much does it cost to join 4-H 

Joining 4-H costs little or nothing. 

Some projects may require an investment

As the summertime temperatures 

rise, we should 

take extra precautions to 

guard against overheating 

and heat 

stroke. Heat stroke 

is when your body 

overheats because 

it no longer has 

enough water to 

keep it cool – you 

stop sweating. You 

may become dizzy, 

weak, or unconscious. 

This is a life 

threatening condition 

and 911 should 

be called. 

During physical activity, 

your body temperature rises 

because muscles generate 

about 20 time more heat 

when you are active than 

when you aren’t. As your 

temperature rises, you begin 

to sweat. Sweating takes the 

extra heat and releases it to 

keep the body cool. 

The more active 

you are, the more 

water you lose. It is 

very important to 

replace water lost 

through sweating 

so you don’t over 

heat. When water 

is not replaced, the 

body temperature 

goes up. If you notice 

you are not

physical activity, 

then you could suffer from 

heat stroke. 

You can get water many 

different ways; you don’t always 

have to drink it. Almost

have too many drinks with 

caffeine because caffeine 

causes your body to lose 

water faster. Keep plenty

like around while participating

in enough daily fluids by the 

color of your urine – it should 

be pale or clear in color. 

Drinks and foods that can 

help replace lost water include: 

juice, coffee, tea (decaffeinated 

is best), lemonade, 

sports drinks, soft drinks, 

soups, milk, smoothies, oranges, 

lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers. 

If you or anyone else show 

signs of heatstroke it is best 

to seek medical attention immediately. 

Until help arrives, 

drink about 1/2 a glass of 

room temperature water, not 

cold water, every 15 minutes 

and lie down in a shaded 

area.

FOUNDATION OF FAITH — The Bridgeport Pre-Parole Transfer Facility is 

implementing a faith-based program aimed at building social, financial and lifestyle 

skills in inmates prior to their release. 

When inmates are released from the 

Bridgeport Pre-Parole Transfer Facility, 

Warden Mary Brandin hopes that 

the women will find a job, have successful 

relationships with their friends 

and family and become contributing 

members of their community. 

But without a program in the facility 

to support these hopes, released inmates 

are left to struggle in a society 

they have not been a part of for some 

time. 

“When you are removed from society 

for any period of time at all, there 

are so many habits that you forget or 

that you lose out on from being locked 

up,” Brandin said. “You want offenders

The Bridgeport facility plans to bein 

the Bridgeport Re-entry Initiative, 

faith-based program that will also 

erve as an educational program for 

nmates at the end of July. 

The Re-entry Initiative relies on the 

elp of volunteers to serve as educators 

nd mentors to inmates six months 

rior to and after their release. 

“The intent of the program is to reinegrate 

the offender back into the comunity,” 

Brandin said. 

While serving their final six months 

t the facility, inmates will have the 

pportunity to attend classes on topics 

uch as anger management, finance, 

amily management and community 

articipation. Inmates will also be rentroduced 

to simple social skills. 

“When you’ve only been able to eat 

ith plastic spoons and forks and then 

ou’re handed a knife, you don’t know 

hat to do,” said Cheryl Evans, voluneer 

coordinator. 

Inmates will also catch up on technology 

they will need to use to apply for 

jobs. Brandin explained that recently 

released inmates may not understand 

how to use a computer to fill out a job 

application. 

“You show that to an offender, someone 

who received their GED while in 

the system, and they’re more apt to 

walk out without applying,” Brandin 

said. “They may be too embarrassed to 

ask for help.” 

The program will work most efficiently 

with between 30 to 45 volunteers. 

About 15 people have signed up 

so far following a community meeting 

about the program on June 16. Volunteers 

will attend training through 

the Texas Department of Corrections, 

Corrections Corporation of America 

and Alpha Ministries to learn the program’s 

curriculum. 

After training, volunteers will be given 

a specific curriculum topic to teach 

that best matches their strengths and 

knowledge level. 

“We base what they do and when 

they do it on their knowledge, skills 

and schedule. That’s what makes their 

time truly a gift. They have a life outside 

of this program, and they still 

want to be involved,” Brandin said. 

Volunteers may also become mentors 

to inmates and can serve as a support 

system once released. 

The classes and support from volunteers 

will also give inmates a self-esteem 

boost, said Brandin and Evans. 

“I think it’s really going to be beneficial. 

The ladies are excited. It’s really 

going to turn their lives around and 

give them self esteem,” Evans said. 

Brandin said it gives offenders something 

to look forward to. 

“This is another way they can build 

credibility and self-respect, which is 

lacking in a lot of offenders,” she said.

“I’m excited about it and the offenders 

have asked for a program of this nature 

for a period of time.” 

Evans, who has led Bible study at 

the Bridgeport facility for a year and 

a half, looks at the program as a way 

to become more involved with the inmates. 

“I think getting to have a relationship 

with the girls and getting to know 

them more and be able to keep in touch 

with them is what attracts me to this 

program,” Evans said. “It’s almost like 

I’m a mother hen keeping track of the 

chicks.” 

By preparing inmates for release 

with social, lifestyle and occupation 

skills, Evans and Brandin hope to reduce 

the recidivism rate, which is 27.2 

percent statewide based on the latest 

information. 

“This is the problem with a lot of 

them – when they get out, they go 

right back into the environment that 

got them there in the first place. This 

helps them have peace of mind – they 

know they have someone to guide them. 

It helps them establish a rapport with 

someone, and they will have someone 

that really cares,” Evans said. “It’s going 

to help them mainstream back into 

the community.” 

Of about 200 inmates, 65 have submitted 

applications to participate in 

the program. 

“The offenders here at the facility 

have a strong desire to give back to the 

local community. They even agree that 

getting into this program will help 

them do that. They’ll be more confident 


and independent,” Brandin said. “They 

want to be respected by their family 

and community. They want to be aware 

of what is going on.” 

Volunteers are still needed and Evans 

encourages anyone interested, 

even those with a prior record, to apply. 

“Sometimes people have records and 

they think they won’t be able to do 

this,” Evans said. “Don’t let it hold you 

back from being a volunteer. It just depends 

on the severity. You have to have 

two years without a felony.”

When the tissue that lines the uterine cavity (endometrium) abnormally 

implants at sites outside the uterus, it can cause pain and other problems. 

This chronic and characteristically progressive condition, known as 

“endometriosis,” occurs only during the reproductive years and is most 

prevalent among women in their 30s and 40s. It involves portions of the 

endometrium displacing from the uterine cavity through the Fallopian 

tubes into the abdominal cavity during menstruation. These endometrial 

deposits adhere to the surfaces of other organs (such as the ovaries 

and intestines), where they thicken, break down, and bleed. Because 

the blood has no outlet, the implanted tissue becomes irritated, painful, 

and sometimes forms cysts. While there is no cure, there are effective 

treatments available. 

Endometriosis occurs in 1 to 15 percent of women of child bearing age. 

In many women it causes no symptoms, but in others it can be the cause 

of severe pain and may reduce the chances of becoming pregnant. For

time is time to get to 

the pool or lake for relief and 

fun in the sun. While we all 

know that water safety is 

crucial for ourselves and especially 

for children, it’s also 

important to keep our pets 

safe around water as well. 

“The good news is that 

all pets instinctively know 

how to swim,” says Dr. Mark 

Stickney, Director of General 

Surgery Services at 

the Texas A&M University 

College of Veterinary Medicine 

& Biomedical Sciences. 

“However, it is still important 

that you monitor them 

and watch for any hazards 

they may encounter.” 

Although pools can be a 

great way for both pets and 

owners to cool off, they can 

be harmful if not used and 

monitored properly. 

“Dogs will usually self-regulate 

when they need to stop 

swimming, but if they are in 

the pool and they don’t know 

where the steps are or are 

unable to get up them then 

it can become a problem,” 

Stickney said. 

While you might be watching 

your pet while they are 

swimming with the family, 

it is important to make sure 

that there is no way they can 

get into or fall into the pool 

unsupervised. 

“It would be a rare cat 

that would swim willingly, 

but it is possible for them 

to be chasing a bug and fall 

into a pool and not be able to 

get out. A pool can also be 

a hazard for a pet with epilepsy 

that could fall in while 

having a seizure,” Stickney 

said. 

One other hazard that

covers. If a dog unwittingly 

walks onto a pool cover it can 

get tangled in it and drown.

“If your pet’s eyes get irritated 

you can use regular 

saline solution to flush them 

out,” Stickney said. “Also, 

water exposure in general 

can cause some dogs to get 

ear infections so it’s important 

to watch for that and 

take your animals to the veterinarian 

if either of these 

conditions persist.” 

Lakes present similar 

risks as pools with regard 

to water safety, but Stickney 

explains that a few extra 

precautions are necessary 

when taking your pets on a 

boat. 

“Make sure that if you take 

your pet on a boat that you 

have a lifejacket on them,” 

urges Stickney. “If the animal 

falls out of the boat they 

could hit their head or they 

might not be able to get back 

into the boat so they will 

need the jacket to help them 

stay afloat.” 

Stickney explains that it is 

very important to have a special 

life jacket that is made 

for a pet because a lifejacket 

made for a human will not 

fit correctly and could get 

tangled around a pet’s legs 

or neck. 

“One final thing that I 

would say about boat safety 

is that although you may be 

surrounded by water, if the 

dog can’t get into the water 

they can get dehydrated. So 

make sure you bring plenty 

of water for the dog to drink,” 

concludes Stickney. 

Spending time with your 

pets in the water is a great 

way to have fun and beat the 

summer heat.

can make sure it is a fun and

A local business owner received 

a 15-year prison sentence 

Thursday for sexually assaulting 

his niece in 2006. 

The girl was 11 years old at 

the time of the assault. 

Mohammed Reza, 51, formerly 

of Decatur, stared straight 

ahead with a passive expression 

as Judge John Fostel read 

the jury’s verdict in 271st District 

Court. He also received 

a $10,000 fine. The state had 

asked the jury for a 50-year sentence 

for the charge, but family 

and friends of the victim were 

satisfied with the result. 

“The (district attorney’s office) 

has done a great job,” said 

Daisy Ali, the victim’s aunt and 

former wife of Reza, at the conclusion 

of the three-day trial. “I 

am proud to live in Decatur.” 

The victim’s mother, Farzana 

Siddiqua, said she believed justice 

had been served. 

After the sentence was announced,
