Challenges to Further Development and
Exploitation of Gateway and Corridor
• Need to act quickly and decisively
• Constraints in transportation infrastructure capacity
may undermine advances in global supply chain
performance
• Changes in public policy lagging behind changes in
business practices
• Complexity of expanding infrastructure in dense
urban environments
15
The Vision…
To establish Canada’s Asia-Pacific Gateway and Corridor as the
best transportation network facilitating global supply chains between
North America and Asia.
In particular, the Asia-Pacific Gateway and Corridor Initiative will seek to:
• Boost Canada’s commerce with the Asia-Pacific region, notably China
but also India;
• Increase the Gateway’s share of North America-bound container
imports from Asia;
• Improve the efficiency and reliability of the Gateway to Canadian and
North American exports as Asia’s economies expand.
16
The Asia-Pacific Gateway and Corridor serves all of Canada
It is a system of transportation infrastructure, including west coast ports, road and rail
connections, that reach across Western Canada and into the economic heartlands of
North America, as well as major airports and border crossings.
17
The Initiative delivers $321 million in immediate measures
Other immediate measures:
• Marketing the Asia-Pacific Gateway and
Corridor
• Lower Mainland Traffic Management System
• Use of Containers Study
• Lower Mainland Port Integration
• Lower Mainland Trucking Forum
19
A fast-track consultation and planning process
will advance the Initiative.
The fast-track process will be based on:
• Real partnerships with the British
Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and
Manitoba provincial governments.
• Collaboration between the public and
private sectors.
• A private sector perspective, building on
wide ranging consultations underway, and
including strategic advice from key
industry leaders.
• An international conference of experts.
• Engagement of the Western Canadian
business community in addressing the
opportunities and challenges with respect
to the emerging economic giants in Asia.
TO
PRODUCE
• Decisions for investing the
remaining $260.8 million.
• A long-term strategy for the
Gateway’s development.
20
Canada’s Asia-Pacific Gateway and Corridor Initiative is about
strengthening Canada’s position in international commerce …
• It delivers tangible results as part of the
Government of Canada’s commitment to
promote a more competitive, more
productive Canadian economy.
• A successful gateway will attract foreign
investment, bring new jobs and skilled
workers.
… to build a more competitive
Canada long into the future
