It’s nice to think that nature
can delete the traces we leave, isn’t it?
Our strategy of good growth: to design and manufacture eco-effective products that leave their mark
on scientifi c research, in co-operation with nature.
Tecniplast aims to arrive at guaranteeing products with zero CO2 emissions, creating a virtuous model for the Laboratory Animal sector. This
entails adopting the appropriate technologies and processes which will positively impact the quality of life of millions of people.Tecniplast’s
drive to measure and cut CO2 emissions constitutes a point of reference on a worldwide scale.
Tecniplast is the fi rst company in the sector to certify the CO2 footprint on its products – an ambitious sign of respect for the
environment in manufacturing.
Welcome to Helsinki
Dear Colleagues,
On behalf of the Scientifi c and Organizing Committee, we have the pleasure to welcome
you to the 11 th FELASA and 40 th Scand-LAS joint symposium ‘New Paradigms in Laboratory
Animal Science’ on the 14 th -17 th of June 2010 in Helsinki, Finland. The conference venue is
the Marina Congress Center, located along the seaside in downtown Helsinki.
The FELASA symposium, organized every third year, is the largest European laboratory
animal science meeting. Scand-LAS has been invited to join this conference and highlight
its own anniversary with a special celebration.
The FELASA symposium has grown into an event in which over a thousand scientists and
other professionals from all over the world participate. The programme provides various
topics of current interest, covering both scientifi c and practical aspects, presented as
plenary lectures, short oral presentations and posters. Workshops are an important part
of the programme, giving opportunity to valuable discussions and exchange of ideas
between the participants.
The large exhibition will allow you to get familiar with the most up-to-date equipment and
technology, and in addition to the exhibition, there are exhibitor-organised seminars.
Last but not least, there will be an enjoyable social programme to entertain you and help
create social channels with old and new friends and colleagues.
We welcome you cordially to enjoy the meeting and the white nights of northern Europe.
Neurotrophic factors: Biology and therapeutic potential for
neurodegenerative diseases
Mart Saarma is the Academy Professor and Director of the Centre of
Excellence in Molecular and Integrated Neuroscience of the Academy
of Finland at the Institute of Biotechnology, University of Helsinki,
Finland. He has studied neurotrophic factors and their receptors
in development and in neurodegenerative diseases. His group has
discovered several GDNF family receptors and demonstrated that
the RET receptor tyrosine kinase is the signalling receptor for GDNF.
Recently, his group has discovered a new neurotrophic factor CDNF
and shown that this protein very effi ciently protects and repairs dopamine neurons in
animal models of Parkinson’s disease. Currently his group has developed GDNF and
its receptor GFRa1 conditional knockout mice. Mart Saarma is the member of several
Workshops
1. How to prepare animal ethics part in 7. Framework Program applications
Coordinators: David B. Morton & Derek Fry
Applicants for EU FP7 projects are asked to meet certain scientifi c and ethical standards regarding any
proposed animal use. The workshop will deal with aspects of both scientifi c and ethics scrutiny so that
those attending will be more aware of what is required and what the reviewers will be looking for. It is
hoped that laboratory animal scientists will be able to give valuable advice to those seeking funds and
become an integral part of the submission process.
2. Leadership in association management (Limit 30 participants)
Coordinator: Ann Turner
Historically, academic management courses concentrate on “problem solving” and traditional topics
such as coordination, evaluation, program planning, budgeting, and so forth. While these management
theories and practices are important, creating the environment for a positive culture is the foundation
for a successful organization. One way to move toward this type culture is through a way of thinking
called Appreciative Inquiry. A major assumption of Appreciative Inquiry is that in every organization
something works. Positive change is brought about by identifying what works and learning how to
do more of what works. Rather than focusing on what is wrong, Appreciative Inquiry focuses on what
is right and builds on success. Managers in an organization practising Appreciative Inquiry seek to
align the strengths of the organization in ways that make the weaknesses no longer relevant. This
presentation will outline the basic assumptions of Appreciative Inquiry and provide examples of how to
use the method in a laboratory setting.
3. Implementing the 3Rs into facility routines
Coordinator: Jussi Helppi
Implementing the 3Rs principles has been common practice for many years in husbandry and
experimental work with laboratory animals. But less effort has been put towards understanding the
impact of an effi cient management of an animal facility as a whole. Lately, laboratory animal care
programs are being challenged to do more with less. This has been the expectation of managers in other
industries for decades. Proper management techniques applied in the daily running of well planned and
built animal facilities can lead to better motivation of the workers and more effective running of the
facility. This would result in more work being accomplished with less people that are better trained
and motivated, leading to less mistakes and eventually to better animal well-being. Speakers at this
roundtable have extensive background not only in designing and planning of modern animal facilities
and programs, but also in running and managing them. The focus will be mainly on, but not limited to,
transgenic mouse and core facilities. This session will also introduce concepts of “lean” management
that have been adopted with success in leading companies in many other business sectors. Various
examples of past and on-going “lean” initiatives in lab animal care will be presented with respect to
improving productivity, customer satisfaction, animal welfare, occupational safety, and energy saving.
Speakers:
Rainer Post (Architect, doranth post architekten, Munich, Germany)
Jussi Helppi (Head of Biomedical Services, MPI-CBG, Dresden, Germany)
Workshops
4. Systematic reviews, including the enhanced 3Rs search
Coordinators: Merel Ritskes-Hoitinga & Marlies Leenaars
Why systematic reviews in laboratory animal science? Within the fi eld of animal experimentation it
is not yet a common practice to perform systematic reviews (SR) or meta-analyses. These methods
have been introduced to the clinical setting decades ago and have gained full acceptance as necessary
steps for evidence-based medicine. In order to reach evidence-based laboratory animal science, SR
and meta-analyses of animal studies need to be performed. This session will focus on why SR of animal
experiments is urgently needed, how they need to be done, and which hurdles there are to overcome.
Editorial boards need to ask for suffi cient details of animal studies; medical ethics committees need to
ask for a full analysis of the animal studies before each clinical trial (because of patient safety); animal
ethics committees should require a SR on the 3Rs (e.g. the choice of an animal model); and funding
agencies ought to require and fi nance systematic reviews when funding animal studies. Because
all animal studies differ in experimental set-up and many publications lack many essential details,
systematic reviews are not yet possible, let alone meta-analyses. In order to be able to do meta-analyses,
all individual data from studies need to be made available in future as well, just as in clinical studies (the
trial register). In this session small discussion groups will focus on how to tackle and overcome these
hurdles after the presentations.
5. Communication to the public about developments in animal research
Coordinator: Frauke Ohl & Jan van der Valk
During the 50 years since the development of the 3Rs there have been many changes in the use of
laboratory animals: the number of animals used for experimental research has been dramatically
reduced through new replacement and reduction approaches, the housing and treatment of animals
have been improved (refi ned) and, not least, the attitude of researchers has been shaped towards a
more careful ethical consideration of animal experimentation. This is all the result of internal initiatives
and of national and international regulations.
However, it might be questioned whether the societal perspective on what ‘responsible use of
experimental animals’ means is identical or even comparable with the scientifi c view. Listening to public
discussions on animal experiments, there seems to be a general mistrust of scientists with respect
to the responsible use of experimental animals. The public opinion seems to remain quite negative,
irrespective of all the 3Rs developments in recent decades. Notably, surveys performed in different
European countries show that public opinion is often based on a fundamental lack of information
about animal experimentation or is based on one-sided information which is not always correct.
Science, and especially Laboratory Animal Science, thus has to critically evaluate its own role in public
communication/information.
The workshop will focus on the role of Laboratory Animal Scientists in shaping the societal
perspective and acceptance with respect to the use of experimental animals and the role of the 3Rs
developments via communication with the public.
Workshops
6. Recognition and adequate reporting of clinical signs in laboratory animals
Coordinator: Martje Fentener van Vlissingen
This FELASA working group has been tasked to set up a glossary of clinical signs for better defi nition
and reporting of clinical signs in laboratory animals. Apparently there is a need, because many
establishments (in academia and industry) responded to a general call to share their glossaries and/
or clinical score sheets. These are makeshift and differ quite substantially amongst themselves.
Meanwhile, quite a few other institutions are starting initiatives to develop glossaries and score sheets,
a process that could be strongly enhanced by the availability of a good glossary in the public domain.
The challenge is to use terminology that is meaningful to animal care personnel and technicians
as well as researchers, for optimal scientifi c gain and animal welfare (e.g. better application of preset
humane endpoints). It is also a fi eld where industry and academia could provide mutual enhancement.
Although the working group was not tasked to comment on the severity of clinical conditions, the
results of the working group would be welcomed in a scheme for retrospective evaluation of severity,
as the current schemes under discussion in the EU legislative process include severity estimates of
procedures but not of outcomes. Thus, outcomes are still to be added.
As the working group has identifi ed some typical fi elds where applications have been developed
and would like to have input from the fi eld at this stage, a workshop on this topic would be very helpful.
The main topics to be covered are:
1. General considerations and approaches to data acquisition
2. Clinical signs as part of phenotyping of genetically altered mouse models
3. Clinical signs scored in pharmacology/toxicology
4. Clinical signs in biomedical fi sh models
Workshops
7. New generation GMOs from a laboratory animal perspective (Limit 50 participants)
Coordinators: Belen Pintado & Jan-Bas Prins
The topics to be discussed:
Breeding and Maintenance: increasingly higher numbers of animals produced with less
animals of the right genotype.
Genotyping and animal identifi cation, FELASA working group on this topic.
Other modes of phenotyping necessary with more specifi c mutations introduced.
Bio-imaging: repeated analyses of animals: what is acceptable?
Focus on one background (B6): How wrong can you go?
Cost-benefi t evaluation of transgenic models.
Can refi nement and reduction go hand in hand?
8. Beyond housing.......adding value with the 3Rs
Coordinators: Wolfgang Müller, Jörg Luft & Angela Bodey
Providing primates with enriched, social housing conditions and refi ning laboratory procedures on
regulatory toxicity studies requires special consideration. While ETS 123 provides us with a framework,
to design and manage a facility to maximize opportunities for refi nement you have to consider factors
such as the compatibility (age and ranking) of the animals, the length of time the animals are in the
facility, catching and handling the animals and the procedures the animals are exposed to. There is no
‘one size fi ts all’ approach; it is a process that begins at the breeding facility and continues throughout
the animal’s life. How do we advance the refi nement of experiments and reduce the use of primates
while meeting the rigorous regulatory requirements of safety assessment studies?
The aim of this workshop is to examine the factors that impact on the welfare and scientifi c
integrity of regulatory toxicity studies in primates. Through a series of presentations we will discuss
how the role of the breeders, the design of the housing and the contribution of training the animals
and technicians handling the animals will impact on the outcome of studies and the contribution these
factors make to advancing animal welfare. We will look back to past obstacles, address current hurdles
and look forward to future challenges and discuss the need to balance reduction and refi nement. The
workshop will conclude with a round table discussion where industry practices can be shared.
Workshops
9. Ethical footprint of animal studies
Coordinators: Anna Olsson, Aurora Brønstad & Rony Kalman
The educational aim of this workshop is to explore the ethical evaluation of proposals, identify key
concerns and disagreements over selected case studies and the differences and similarities in how
different collections of people handle similar cases.
The focus will be on advanced protocol review and other issues such as what to look for in a
protocol that includes relieved and/or unrelieved pain and distress; how to recognize and evaluate the
level of pain and distress; appropriate end points stated in the protocol; special environmental conditions
required because of potential pain and/or distress.
The workshop is intended for individuals concerned with science and appropriate animal welfare.
This may include experienced IACUC members and administrators, principal investigators, attending
veterinarians, regulatory personnel and laboratory animal care staff.
The working format will allow small groups to discuss one or two case studies as if they were an
ethics committee, then all groups will get together and present their conclusions followed by a general
discussion.
The workshop can only allow for a limited number of participants.
Facts and fi ction about Helsinki
Helsinki, the capital of the Republic of Finland, is a modern city with over half a million residents
and is situated on the Baltic Sea. In 2000 Helsinki was an offi cial European City of Culture
while celebrating its 450th anniversary. Helsinki together with the neighbouring cities forms
the Helsinki metropolitan area with more than a million inhabitants. Helsinki is unique among
Northern European cities. The lifestyle in the second-most northern capital city in the world is full
of contrasts and activities in the form of hundreds of events and friendly people. Helsinki’s identity
has been formed by cultural infl uences from both the East and West.
The archipelago that surrounds Helsinki with hundreds of tiny islands creates an idyllic
environment for cruises and other water sports, as well as sightseeing.
Over 450 years of history, several architectural layers and the impact of different periods can be
clearly seen in Helsinki. Finnish design has also made the country’s capital city world famous. The
beauty of the surrounding nature blends seamlessly together with high-tech achievements, while
old traditions mix with the latest contemporary trends. The city centre has many beautiful parks,
and the nearby forests offer an ideal setting for peaceful and quiet walks.
Helsinki’s rhythm is laid back yet at the same time refreshingly active in terms of both the number
and quality of restaurants and nightclubs.
The reason for washing is
to leave everything clean, isn’t it?
IWT is the leading manufacturer of eco-design washing machines.
In the world of design and production of washing machines, IWT can justifi ably boast
its pre-eminence. We are fully aware that by using less water, less energy and less detergents
we reduce overall environmental impact. Supporting research has a meaning only if we are
aware that the energy resources of our planet are not unlimited. IWT machines are conceived and
realized according to eco-design rules - “from cradle to grave”. They take into account the impact
on the environment throughout product development, from design to construction, through
to use and fi nal disposal. With no compromises on the desired results, performances are always
at the highest levels. At IWT environmental and social impact becomes itself
a part of the process of research and development and the quest for innovation.
