SENIOR LIVING COMMUNITY USES UNIQUE APPROACH TO

RAISE MONEY FOR FAMILIES IN NEED

HOUSTON, Texas, December, 10, 2012: Residents at Parkway Place are in the giving

spirit, reaching into their hearts and their pocketbooks to help families in need. The

senior living community tapped into its creative side by holding a gently used sale

comprised of items donated by residents, staff and the National Charity League. Family

members, residents and staff went shopping, and they raised nearly $700. Part of the

money will go to the Salvation Army to assist area families, and the rest will specifically

help a family at The Bridge Over Troubled Waters buy a holiday meal and gifts. An 88-

year-old former Salvation Army minister and Parkway Place resident was behind the

unique fundraiser.

“I like to get people involved, and I enjoy helping others,” said Vonceil Crowder,

Parkway Place resident. “During my 34 years with the Salvation Army, I served in

disasters, hurricanes and tornados, and I feel I was placed here for a purpose. That

purpose is to help others.”

Crowder is president of the assisted living resident council at Parkway Place. She and

the other residents voted to decide where they should donate the proceeds of their sale.

The group participates in fundraising activities all year long, and they especially look

forward to the sale that allows them to make a significant donation.

“We get thank you notes that just break your heart,” said Crowder. “The families are

always so thankful for everything we do, and they are so appreciative. We don’t do it for

thanks, we do it because it is the right thing to do.”

The staff enjoys participating in the sale, and they are truly inspired by the giving nature

of the residents. The residents also recently bagged rice and beans for the Houston

Food Bank.

“I think it is wonderful to see how much Parkway Place residents give back to the

community,” said Shannon Schmidt, assisted living activity director, Parkway Place.

“The activities give the residents purpose and the ability to participate in something that

makes a difference in the lives of others. The residents find it rewarding, and so do I.”
