‘Three Cups’ author to speak on campus<br />
The best-selling author of<br />
“Stones into Schools” and coauthor<br />
of “Three Cups of Tea:<br />
One Man’s Mission to Promote<br />
Peace…One School at a Time”<br />
will offer a free presentation<br />
for students and staff at<br />
Laramie County Community<br />
College on Tuesday, March 29.<br />
Greg Mortenson, cofounder<br />
and executive director<br />
of the Central Asia Institute in<br />
Bozeman, Mont., a nonprofit<br />
organization that and supports<br />
community-based education,<br />
especially for girls, in remote<br />
regions of northern Pakistan<br />
and Afghanistan, will speak<br />
at 2:30 p.m. Later that day, he<br />
will speak at the Taco John’s<br />
Event Center at 7 p.m.<br />
Since 1996, Mortenson’s<br />
work has helped construct 145<br />
schools in the Middle East and<br />
bring educational opportunities<br />
to more than 64,000 students.<br />
In 2009, Mortenson was<br />
awarded the “Star of Pakistan,”<br />
and he was nominated for the<br />
Nobel Peace Prize in both 2009<br />
and 2010.<br />

Campus activities celebrating<br />
the arrival of Mortenson<br />
will be held March 22–24,<br />
including movies, a photography<br />
exhibit, and a discussion<br />
on issues in central Asia.<br />
On Tuesday, March 22, the<br />
film “Charlie Wilson’s War” will<br />
be shown from noon–2 p.m.<br />
in the student lounge. The<br />
film is a drama based on Texas<br />
congressman Charlie Wilson’s<br />
covert dealings in Afghanistan<br />
to assist the rebels in their war<br />
with the Soviets.<br />
Also on March 22, Peggy<br />
Kelsey, of Austin, Texas, will<br />
host a photography exhibit<br />
in the Center for Conferences<br />
and Institutes 129/130 from<br />
6:30–8 p.m. Kelsey will also<br />
talk about women’s issues in<br />
Afghanistan. Kelsey is a professional<br />
photographer, social<br />
worker and teacher who was<br />
inspired by the resilience she<br />
saw in Afghan women during<br />
her travels. She saw oppression<br />
and decided to start both<br />
Afghan and Iraqi women’s<br />
projects. Kelsey’s prints will<br />
be displayed in the Ludden<br />
Library in <strong>February</strong>.<br />
On Wednesday, March 23,<br />
an ethnic lunch will be held in<br />
CCI 129/130 from noon–1 p.m.<br />
Also, a University of Wyoming<br />
history professor, Marianne<br />
Kamp, will lead a panel discussion<br />
from 1–3 p.m. in CCI<br />
129/130 with Dr. Mohammed<br />
Salih and Arshi Nisley about<br />
issues in central Asia. Kamp’s<br />
focus is Middle East history,<br />
and she has been published in<br />
many regionally related publications.<br />
Food will be served at<br />
the event.<br />
On Thursday, March 24, the<br />
film “The Kite Runner” will be<br />
shown will from noon–2 p.m.<br />
in the student lounge. Based<br />
on a novel written by Khaled<br />
Hosseini, “The Kite Runner”<br />
is set in Afghanistan. The film<br />
offers an understanding of<br />
the Middle East culture and<br />
values as well as the traditions<br />
that encumber women’s<br />
rights. These are also themes<br />
in Mortenson’s books.<br />
On Friday, March 25, a discussion<br />
of Mortenson’s book<br />
“Three Cups of Tea” will take<br />
place from 12:30–1:30 p.m.<br />
