What qualities do dragons exemplify that inspire you
I’m inspired by how dragons have adapted to different environments as
seen by cultures around the world. I regard dragons as a force of nature, a
keeper of the boundaries, which not only teach with a kind spirit, but punish
transgressors with the swiftness of a hungry predator. It’s the respect for
nature that the dragon represents that really drives my work.
What materials did you use to make this piece of art
All done digitally. Adobe ® Photoshop ® for software and a small Wacom
tablet for drawing. The piece took about 12 hours.
How does your art shape how you see the world
I try always to incorporate part of the unknown world of creatures for all to
see, as a way to educate and show respect for things that appear small but
that still make up part of our natural world. My art makes me realize how
much potential each creature has to adapt and live even in the harshest
environments while realizing at the same time how fragile we can all be.
How does your art shape how you see the world
His name is Puff. There is a Soviet fairy tale about an evil crocodile that I like color and color likes me. I do my best to convey my feelings and
swallows the sun. Of course, it has a happy end, and the sun is returned mood to my viewers with all the possibilities that color and light offer.
to the sky. So, my dragon has his own sun in a translucent crop. Because
of the dragon’s good temper, the sun stays where it is, and his giant head What can dragons teach us about life and art
serves as a home to the local birds.
Dragons represent the essence of fantasy. Guardians of treasures and
abductors of princesses, they are an embodiment of the human’s desire for
Your choice of characters and how you execute them tell a story, so
give them some thought.
Traditionally characters have been used as a form of decoration,
off to the side, but if you integrate them into your piece, it will make
it memorable. For example, let your character replace a letter by
embedding the character in the letters. And do some research when
adopting well-known characters or objects so you know their meaning
and social connotation.
Characters don’t have to be hyper realistic, either. Be creative. A
cartoon character can carry a lot of stylizations that you can work
into your total composition.
worry about your line strokes. Use simple lines and keep them
balanced. Use these as the skeleton for your shapes.
fleshing out your character.
The first level of color is added here. Use a basic
4blue for the body, yellow for the visor for contrast,
and red for the elbow joints and the plate on the stomach.
It is entirely up to you as to how the robot looks
or how the joints are put together. Use a waterbased
marker or watercolor paints to do your fills.
keep the ones you want, and change the line weight as you go over
For example, see how the torso is over the waist It’s
S U R F A C E
the pencil lines. I prefer to keep the lines thick towards the edges
safe to add shadows there. Finally, add a bright red
Acid-free art paper
and thinner as I go into the robot. I also like to add a thick black
stroke and some bubbles to finish it off. Now you can
stroke around the entire character to make it pop. Erase all other
place your character in its place within your piece.
Your personal journal is the perfect
place for testing the artistic waters.
You can play with a new medium or
technique, try out different colors and
their effects, or consider a variety of
formats—and feel completely free. The
final product can remain private, or you
can share it with others, as you wish.
PAINT TEST DRIVE
Liz Steel finds her journals the perfect place to test
paints, as her notes suggest.
INK TEST DRIVE
This ink was supposed to be
waterproof. Hmm. Maybe not.
NAPKIN TEST DRIVE
The people at the next table got captured
on my paper napkin. I collaged it right into
my journal. I like that the napkin became
semi-transparent and showed the blob of
color below.
Define “mistake.” Often we put too much pressure on
ourselves to be perfect. Ignore those tapes of remembered
criticisms. Your inner critic can take a walk!
Speed-sketching techniques can never be perfect. Neither
can blind contour drawings you create without even
looking at the page. Who cares
But if you really, really hate an image, you can paint over all
or part of it with gouache (opaque watercolor) or acrylic. Then
either write on it or make a new image. You can also redraw an
image on a new piece of paper and glue it over the part you
don’t like—or glue the patch on first, then redraw.
WRITE RIGHT OVER
It’s hard to draw a moving cat! With a light application of blue gouache,
I covered the sketch that didn’t work and wrote on top of it. Another
option would have been to create a new sketch over the gouache.
When you’re tempted to tear out or cover
a “mistake,” remember that one of the
benefits of creating a journal like this is that
your progress is right there to see, from your
earliet journals to your latest ones. Seeing how
you’ve grown beyond your mistakes can be
very encouraging!
THE PATCH
Artist Fred Crowley uses Fabriano Ingres paper as a patch to cover
drawings that “don’t get off the ground or are clear mistakes.” The
patch here adds a strong graphic effect, and placing it at an angle
created a bit of dramatic tension.
Surface Treatment
Workshop
Explore 45 Mixed-Media Techniques
DARLENE OLIVIA MCELROY & SANDRA DURAN WILSON
• Surface textures: A topic that is finding large favor
with the mixed-media crowd.
• Traditional techniques as well as new applications
that have not been explored in other books such as
the use of WonderUnder, pulled paper and plasterdipped
gauze are explored.
• By showcasing two artists with very different styles,
the reader is shown that numerous options and
approaches to the same technique are possible.
Similar to the authors’ first best-selling book, Image Transfer Workshop,
which gave readers more than they could ever want when it came to
ideas for making image transfers, Surface Treatment Workshop provides
the reader with an equally impressive amount of techniques and ideas for
mixed-media surface treatments. In addition to over 45 stepped-out techniques,
projects that combine the techniques into finished works of art
are shown. Examples from both artists show how the same techniques can
be used to yield very different results, and variations and troubleshooting
will guide readers into endless applications for their own artwork.
from 50 Patchwork Blocks
PAM & NICKY LINTOTT
topics – sampler quilt-making and using pre-cut
fabric selections.
• Enables quilters to achieve great results and develop
their skills using just one jelly roll.
• The authors’ previous books have been bestsellers
Readers will discover how to use the quilting world’s favorite pre-cut
Twisted Stitches
30 Corrupt Cross-Stitch and Embroidery Designs
PHIL DAVISON
• Subversive motifs: From a t-shirt with a blood stain over the
heart to a key fob with roadkill on it, the 30 projects and motifs
in this book are uniquely and amusingly twisted.
• An inexpensive craft to try: The investment to start cross-stitching
is minimal, as floss and the cloth needed for each project
will run less than $5.00.
• Resurgence of needlearts: Embroidery and cross-stitch are hot
as demonstrated by people like Jenny Hart and websites like
Mr. X Stitch. This book plays to the same audience.
For crafters who like their stitching with a twist, this book provides
original designs with a wicked spin, and reworks cute craft imagery,
including genuine vintage embroidery motifs, so that they cross
over to the dark side. Think pretty rose bouquets with a gun poking out or a cute row of ducklings
New Dimensions in Bead and Wire Jewelry
Unexpected Combinations, Unique Designs
MARGOT POTTER
• Unique combination: Other wire jewelry books focus on hard
wire, while beading books often incorporate soft wire. This is
the first book to bring them together.
• Includes all of the classic wire-working methods jewelers love:
wire wrapping, twisting, coiling, crochet, jigs, and chain maille
• Though the focus of the techniques for this book is on wire,
there are still plenty of beads.
Readers will create 30 stepped-out projects that explore the possibilities
for using wire as a dimensional design feature as well
as a structural one through combinations of both hard and soft
wire. In addition to basic wire-working techniques, the reader is
given a thorough introduction to the various types of wire used
throughout the book. Projects are organized into five chapters. Two chapters focus on hard-wire
projects, two on soft wire, and a final chapter combines the two wire types. Troubleshooting tips
are sprinkled throughout the book and three variations per chapter provide additional inspiration.
36 I WOODWORKING
The New Traditional
Woodworker
From Tool Set to Skill Set to Mind Set
JIM TOLPIN
• Traditional (hand tool) woodworking is the fastest
growing part of the woodworking community.
• Most instructional books are dated and don’t reflect
new concepts and tools
• An under-discussed topic that will benefit from Jim
Tolpin’s authoritative name
Hand working wood to make furniture is a very different experience from
machining wood to make it. Making furniture the old fashioned way isn’t
as fast or efficient as making it with machines —but that isn’t the point
when woodworking is seen as an avocation and the woodworker becomes
fully immersed and engaged in the wood. In The New Traditional
Woodworker, Tolpin addresses all aspects of woodworking with hand tools
from setting up the shop, to explaining how the tools work, to joinery.
He finishes with instructions on building workshop accessories to use
with hand tools. Also included are other sample projects and information
on finishing them.
Exercises in Wood-Working
With a Short Treatise on Wood
IVIN SICKELS, M.S., M.D.
• 39 excellent exercises for beginning woodworkers
• Hand-tool woodworking history, and how it can be used in the
modern shop
• 19 sections on trees, the structure of wood, how to value it (in
1889 prices/terms) and how to prepare it for woodworking
Exercises in Wood-Working is a reprint of a little-known 1889
book that provides a glimpse into late 19th-century woodworking
history. Its 39 exercises show how to get started in woodworking
and teach the modern user classic lessons in hand-tool
practices that are still applicable today. It is geared toward both
the beginning woodworker and the knowledgeable woodworker
who wants to own a bit of the history of the craft. Printed and
bound to accurately recreate the look of the original as closely
as possible, it possesses the appeal of authenticity plus excellent hand-tool information.
The Workbench Design Book not only shows how to design a workbench—
it also discusses and presents nine specific designs plus critiques of 10 additional
workbenches, with suggestions for making any bench work most
effectively for the kind of work the user does. The nine workbench plans
have a range suitable for all workshop needs, from handwork to power
tools. A discussion of workbench design rules teach what’s effective and
why in a multitude of workshop situations. Additional workholding options—from
shop-made jigs and commercial bench dogs to vise hardware—are
also provided.
CHRISTOPHER SCHWARZ is the editor
of Popular Woodworking Magazine and a
contributing editor to The Fine Tool Journal.
He’s the author of Workbenches: From
Design & Theory to Construction & Use and
Handplane Essentials and is the host of six
