At least riding a motorcycle it is unlikely
you will get booked and fined for using a
mobile phone or GPS unit whilst on the
move!
New laws coming into effect as we go
to press in Victoria are cracking down on
these and other in-car activities whilst the
car is mobile.
Perhaps by outlawing these distracting
in-car activities Motorcyclists maybe that
bit safer on Victorian roads, at least let’s
hope so.
Because according to the Victorian
TAC whilst Motorcyclist represent just
3% of the motor-vehicle fleet for less than
1% kilometer travelled, motorcycle riders
account for 14% of all road deaths in
Victoria. Without researching any statistics
it would be reasonably fair to say that
these statistics for Victoria would be of
a similar profile in most other states in
Australia.
For this reason the TAC should be
applauded for trying to deliver a safety
message to riders of simply -
ALWAYS WEAR PROTECTIVE
CLOTHING WHEN RIDING.
This message was reiterated by
MotoGP riders Dani Pedrosa and Andrea
Dovizioso, when they visited the Victoria
based HART facility recently, urging
riders to wear the ‘right gear’ to protect
themselves when riding.
This campaign doesn’t need to stop
when the advertisements on telly finish
and the billboards advertisements are
replaced. The Australian Motorcycle
Industry can continue the message,
urging your customers to purchase correct
protective clothing. Not only will this keep
your customer safe and able to purchase
more from you, but continue to add to
your bottom line by selling more protective
products of which there seem to be ample
w e l c o m e
available on the market.
Also in this issue there are quite a few
new bikes on the scene with many new
models being announced in readiness for
2010.
Mentioning 2010, and this being our
last issue for the year, it is timely although
I feel a bit early (no Xmas shopping done
yet!) to wish you all well for the festive
season. It is the time of the year when the
Australian Motorcycle Industry has a bit of
a boom as ‘holidayers’ prepare their bikes
and themselves for their relative escapes.
What a great time to be reinforcing the
message to your customers -
ALWAYS WEAR PROTECTIVE
CLOTHING WHEN RIDING.
Wishing you happy reading, a joyous
and safe Xmas break, and a Happy New
Year.
Two-wheels gone tribal
Study puts motorcycle riders in a
tribe of their own. Australian motorbike
riders fall into one of six tribes, ranging
from adrenalin-seeking ‘performers’, to
economically-focussed scooter riding
‘commuters’, to safe and conservative
‘drifters’, according to a ground-breaking
study conducted by InsureMyRide.
The research comes as Australians are
using motorcycles in record numbers.
In the five years to March, 2008,
motorcycle registrations experienced the
largest rate of growth of all vehicle types in
Australia (from 377,271 in 2003 to 567,569
in 2008)1. And last year saw new records
set for motorcycle sales with 134,112
bikes sold, an increase of 3.2 per cent on
the previous year 2.
“We’ve long suspected that different
types of riders share a range of attitudes
and behaviours, but for the first time
research has shown that most riders
fall into one of six unique classifications
or, as we are calling them, tribes,” said
InsureMyRide Executive Manager Graeme
Browne.
“The tribes the research has uncovered
helps us to understand why motorcycle
riders behave the way they do, from their
choice and frequency of riding a bike, their
propensity to take risks while driving, and
their motivations for choosing two-wheels
over four.
“Through this research we’re hoping to
draw riders’ attention to all aspects of their
riding behaviours and characteristics with
the intention of making conditions safer
and even more enjoyable for all
road users.”
Most riders are ‘Specialists’.
Of the six classifications identified by
InsureMyRide’s research, the Specialists
tribe is the one most riders are likely to
fall into; three-quarters of riders 34 and
older (74 per cent) exhibit seasoned riding
behaviours and characteristics that make
them a Specialist rider.”
Specialist riders tend to be more
experienced than other riders, which isn’t
to say they are older – they simply have
spent more time on the bike,” Mr Browne
said. “As a consequence they are less
nervous and stressed while riding, and are
less competitive in comparison to other
tribes that have a compulsion for being
first and winning.”
Two-thirds of Specialists (64 per cent)
have 10 or more years riding experience
and almost half (48 per cent) have
more than 20 years experience. Such
experience is a likely factor in three in five
Specialist riders (58 per cent) wearing
protective safety gear even on short trips.
REPSOL HONDA RIDERS DROP IN AT HART
Honda’s star MotoGP riders,
Dani Pedrosa and Andrea Dovizioso
(Repsol Honda), made a pit stop at the
manufacturer’s world class rider training
facility (HART) on the eve of this year’s
Phillip Island round to show their support
of rider training and safety.
Dani and ‘Dovi’ were both on hand
to participate in filming important safety
messages for HART, and to tour the
facilities of Honda’s all-new site located at
Somerton in Melbourne’s north.
The two 24-year-olds from Spain and
Italy respectively, were vocal about the
key issues surrounding motorcycle rider
safety, particularly considering they both
ride at home in Europe during their time
off. “I ride a Honda scooter back home,”
Dani commented. “It is important to be
much more aware when you are riding
on the road because people... other
drivers.... do unexpected things.”
“The controls on a motorcycle are
much the same, whether you are racing
or riding on the road.
What is different is the conditions, for
instance if it’s wet, as well all the extra
obstacles you have to watch out for.”
“If someone wants to ride a fast bike
on the road like they are on a race track,
my advice to them is to go and sign up
for a track day instead.”
“In a way, it is easy to focus when
we are on the track because we are
going only one direction and there aren’t
as many distractions. On the road, it
is a different story so I think it is very
important for all riders to get the kind of
training they provide here at HART.”
Both riders also had a stint on HARTs
Riding Simulator, a state-of-the-art,
compact, computer driven, easy-to-use
mechanism, that puts riders in real life
road traffic situations through a wide
variety of options.
“This kind of machine is very useful,”
Dovi said. “It makes you think about all
the things that can maybe happen in
traffic.”
“It’s important too that people try and
wear the right kind of gear, a proper
jacket and gloves at least.”
“Our leather suits protect us on the
track because they have body armour
built in so if a regular rider can get the
same from a jacket, it would help them a
lot if they do come off.”
Honda Australia will be releasing a
short video in the near future highlighting
Dani and Dovi’s visit to HART which
will be available on the manufacturer’s
website as well as various social media
sites.
HART operates in Victoria, New South
Wales and Queensland, and is Australia’s
leading rider training company delivering
state-of-the-art teaching
methods to over 17,000 riders
each year.
They are the only rider
training company in Australia to
use rider simulators to improve
Hazard Perception.
HART is fully owned and
run by Honda Australia who,
apart from being a subsidiary of
the world’s largest motorcycle
manufacturer, is also one of
the world’s largest trainers of
motorcyclists.
QLD technician is best in Oceania
Greg Dodt from Yamaha Country in
Gympie, QLD, has scooped first spot at
Yamaha Technical Academy’s industry
leading Oceania Motorcycle Technician
Grand Prix.
Having entered the event on three
previous occasions, veteran Tech GP
competitor Dodt was one of the favourites
to win. “It took a while coming but I
finally came out on top,” explains the
experienced technician. “While every
event has been different, it has been an
advantage attending four on the trot.
It’s the high level of training offered by
the Yamaha Technical Academy combined
with assistance from Yamaha’s QLD
service department that has helped me
achieve this result,” says 42-year-old Dodt,
who finished a close second in the last two
Yamaha MC Tech GPs.
NEW TAC CAMPAIGN URGES RIDERS TO REDUCE RISKS
Motorcyclists are being urged to take
responsibility for their own safety in the
TAC’s latest advertising campaign.
TAC Executive Manager Community
Relations Phil Reed said the new public
education campaign which ran through
the end of October to mid November
highlighted to riders the personal risk they
are exposed to every time they ride and
the behaviours they can employ to reduce
their risk.
“The TAC wants Victorian motorcyclists
to understand that regardless of who is
at fault in a road crash, it will be
the motorcyclist who will come out
second best,” Mr Reed said.
“Independent research shows
that riders are 38 times more likely
than car occupants to be killed or
seriously injured on the road.”
In 2008, 1,044 riders were
seriously injured and 43
motorcyclists were fatally injured on
Victorian roads.
Of the riders killed, 93% were
male, and 56% were single vehicle
Motorcycling Australia (MA) has
announced as of October 14 the release
of its provisional National Events Calendar
for 2010. Please note that all event dates
listed on the calendar are tentative and
The Tech GP is the culmination of
Yamaha’s YTA training program aimed
at raising the proficiency of all Yamaha
technicians in the Oceania market region
to ensure customers receive outstanding
after-sales service.
The event involves gruelling practical
tasks and a tough theoretical test
undertaken by a select group of
Yamaha MD Mr Terry Okawa congratulates 2009
MC Tech GP winner Greg Dodt (right)
crashes with at least 50% of these crashes
involving excessive speed. “Riders need
to make decisions that reduce their level
of risk each time they ride. This means
riding at safe speeds appropriate for
the road conditions and wearing highly
visible protective clothing,” Mr Reed said.
“My message to riders is that there is no
excuse for not wearing full protective
clothing every time you ride.
Correct and visible protective clothing
will help minimise the severity of injuries
sustained when involved in a crash and
motorcycle service staff at YMA’s
headquarters in Sydney.
Second place went to Glenn Merriman
from Fineline Motorcycles in Taree, NSW.
“It’s a great event that recognises the
hard work that goes on behind the scenes
in the service department and I would
recommend other technicians to apply for
future Tech GPs. The spinoff benefits for
the dealerships are great plus it’s a heap
of fun,” says Merriman.
The 10 finalists were selected from
over 100 applicants working in Yamaha
dealerships across Australia and New
Zealand. The finalists arrived at YMA
HQ from every region and underwent a
computerised theory examination and 10
practical tasks that covered subjects such
as fault diagnosis, product knowledge and
customer service.
may even save your life.”
Currently motorcyclists account for 3%
of the Victorian motor-vehicle fleet and
for less than 1% of the vehicle kilometres
travelled. However, riders continue to be
overrepresented in road trauma. In 2008,
they accounted for over 14% of all road
deaths on Victoria’s roads.
“We hope to reduce the number of
motorcyclists killed and injured on our
roads by engaging riders in a discussion
about risk.”
“The TAC encourages riders to make
choices that reduce their risks
each time they jump on their bike
– whether that be by slowing down or
wearing the right protective clothing.
It’s up to you to reduce the risks.”
Mr Reed said that drivers are not
exempt from their responsibilities to
drive predictably and to keep a look
out for riders.
The campaign ran for three weeks
on TV and outdoor billboards, as well
as in print publications and online at
www.spokes.com.au.
can be viewed on the MA website at
www.ma.org.au/2010calendar/
A calendar of international events will
also be available on the site in the near
future.
Pursuing the concept of “harmony with people”
Honda has developed a new personal
mobility technology and unveiled U3-X,
a compact experimental device that fits
comfortably between the rider’s legs, to provide
free movement in all directions just as in human
walking - forward, backward, side-to-side,
and diagonally. Honda will continue research
and development of the device including
experiments in a real-world environment to
verify the practicality of the device.
This new personal mobility device makes it
possible to adjust speed and move, turn and
stop in all directions when the rider leans the
upper body to shift body weight.
This was achieved through application of
advanced technologies including Honda’s
balance control technology, which was
developed through the robotics research of
ASIMO, Honda’s bipedal humanoid robot, and
the world’s first omni-directional driving wheel
system (Honda Omni Traction Drive System, or
HOT Drive System), which enables movement
in all directions, including not only forward and
backward, but also directly to the right and left
and diagonally.
In addition, this compact size and onewheel-drive
personal mobility device was
designed to be friendly to the user and people
around it by making it easier for the rider to
reach the ground from the footrest and placing
the rider on roughly the same eye level as other
people or pedestrians.
Doohan was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame
Australian motorcycling legend
Michael Doohan was inducted into the
Sport Australia Hall of Fame at the 25th
anniversary induction and awards dinner
held at the Crown Palladium Ballroom in
Melbourne in October this year.
Membership of the Sport Australia Hall
of Fame is regarded as the highest honour
for Sports people in Australia, and Doohan
joins an illustrious list of approximately 500
Australian Sportsmen and Sportswomen,
including only six other motorcycle racers,
who share the honour of being a Member.
Road Racing competitors Kel Carruthers
and Wayne Gardner also share membership
of the Hall, while Speedway riders Arthur
‘Bluey’ Wilkinson, Jack Young and Lionel
Van Praag are also Members.
Doohan was one of eight people
inducted as a Member, alongside Kevin
Sheedy (AFL), Peter Montgomery (Water
Polo), Liz Ellis (Netball), Luc Longley
(Basketball), George Gregan (Rugby Union),
Simon Fairweather (Archery), and Shane
Warne (Cricket).
Doohan won the 500cc Motorcycle
Grand Prix World Championship for five
consecutive years from 1994-1998, and he
was presented with a medal and certificate
at the ceremony by another great Australian
motor racing competitor, Sir Jack Brabham.
In other awards presented on the
night, Pole Vaulter Steve Hooker captured
his second consecutive ‘Don’ Award for
his performance in winning the World
Championship earlier this year, while Kieren
Perkins’ swim in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics
was honoured as the memorable Hall of
Fame ‘Moment’.
The night was a resounding success with
close to 1000 people attending the black tie
dinner, and concluded with Australia’s first
modern Olympian, Edwin Flack, and Tennis
great Ken Rosewall, both being honoured
with the prestigious status of Hall of Fame
‘Legend’ - a title now shared by only 30
Australians.
Melbourne’s motorcyclists kick in for the Salvos - for the 32nd time
The annual MRA Toy Run is practically
an institution in Melbourne. Ever since
1978 when forty motorcyclists met to pass
on some toys to some of the community’s
less privileged via the Salvation Army,
more than 100,000 motorcyclists have
taken part, and the Toy Run phenomenon
has spread to communities across the
globe.
The Motorcyclist Rider’s Association
(Vic) will be conducting the Run again
on 13 December 2009 with a small twist,
recognising just how big the event has
become.
MRA (Vic) President John Karmouche
said that the Melbourne Toy Run had
BIKEBusiness
b u s i n e s s t o b u s i n e s s
6 Nov - Dec 2009
become something of a victim of its
own success. “Over the years the Toy
Run has grown to the extent that finding
the resources needed to run it from
one central location was becoming
increasingly costly,” he said.
“With the numbers that wanted to take
part, particularly at its peak, the police
needed to close roads and coordinate
traffic.”
“This year we’ve decided to decentralise
the Toy Run, and create four different
departure points which will make it easier
for everyone involved and be much less of
a financial burden on the organisation.”
Riders can join the Toy Run in
Melbourne’s North, East South and West
and travel in smaller groups.
The departure locations are in Melton,
Eltham, Cranbourne and Werribee.
Karmouche says the idea is that
everyone rides to the Commonwealth
Reserve at Williamstown to celebrate
the 32 nd Toy Run and contribute their
donations. “Having the four separate rides
also means that we can stagger arrivals,
too which will also be less disruptive of the
folks at Williamstown,” Karmouche said.
Motorcyclists who want to take part
should consult the MRA Toy Run website
www.toyrun.org.au for departure locations
and times.

The Fashion World Recognises Draggin Jeans!
In an unprecedented show of support
for a motorcycle brand, Draggin Jeans
is a finalist for the Fashion Group
International (FGI) Award for Innovative
Excellence.
FGI is a global non-profit organization.
It was established in America in the
1930’s with founding members including
Elizabeth Arden, Eleanor Roosevelt,
Helena Rubenstein and Edith Head.
Today FGI has over 6,000 members
spanning 42 countries and the current
advisory board in New York includes
Evelyn Lauder of Estee’ Lauder, Diane
Von Furstenberg, Burton Tansky of
Neiman Marcus and Arie Kopelan of
Chanel. FGI aims to be the pre-eminent
authority on the business of fashion
and design, and through its members
is tapped into the heart of the fashion
world. On the 13th of November FGI
will be recognising and awarding those
companies that are responsible for major
trends and innovations in the fashion
industry.
Draggin Jeans, and the motorcycling
industry as a whole, have previously
operated below the FGI radar, however
with the launch of fashion lines such as
the Slix, Minx, Biker and Silverbacks,
Draggin Jeans has this year gained the
attention of FGI, and a nomination in the
Innovation Excellence category of the
Awards.
Draggin Jeans easily satisfied
the groups requirements for the
Innovation category demonstrating
“the development and/or application of
leading-edge techniques / technology /
systems in one or more aspects of [its]
business operations”.
Draggin Jeans will be in good
company at the Awards, being judged
alongside recognisable fashion labels
such as Collette Dinnigan, Anthea
Crawford, Dinosaur Designs, and Aussie
Bum.
Draggin Jeans’ General Manager,
Fiona Mackintosh is excited that the
small Australian owned company has
been nominated for such a prestigious
award, however she is not at all
surprised by the FGI’s interest in the
company.
“Draggin Jeans has always prided
itself on taking military materials
n e w s
and giving them a real world fashion
application.
We are very fortunate to have a
very strong working relationship with
numerous labs throughout the world
whom continue to push the boundaries
of fibre technology.”
“This nomination symbolises our
success in delivering a safe and
fashionable solution to those riders who
are seeking casual protective clothing
that will fit comfortably within any fashion
wardrobe.”
Irrespective of the outcome of the FGI
Awards, Fiona is adamant that Draggin
Jeans will continue to develop its
fashion lines and explore the benefits of
adapting scientific advancements to the
motorcycling and fashion world.
“Draggin Jeans is a company that
operates with a completely open mind.
Being able to see the possibilities rather
than the barriers will always be the key
to Draggin Jeans’ success”.
BRIDGESTONE AUSTRALIA LTD. ANNOUNCES RESTRUCTURE
Bridgestone Australia Ltd. (BSAL)
announced on the 23 of October that
a difficult decision has been made to
close its tyre manufacturing facilities
in Adelaide (South Australia) and
Christchurch (New Zealand).
Despite continued efforts to improve
cost competitiveness at both plants,
international competitive forces have
been making tyre manufacturing in
Australia and New Zealand increasingly
difficult to the point where the operations
in both countries are no longer viable.
The decision has been explained to
all employees and unions at both plants.
The closures will take effect at the New
Zealand manufacturing plant by the end
of 2009 and at the Australian facility no
later than 30th April 2010.
Regrettably, the closures will affect
around 275 employees in Christchurch
and 600 in Adelaide. Bridgestone’s
distribution, customer service and retail
networks, which employ more than 1,500
people, will continue unaffected.
Bridgestone’s first priority is its people.
Affected employees will receive their full
entitlements.
In addition, the Company is working
on a range of initiatives to assist
employees. “We would like to express
our thanks to all our employees at our
manufacturing facilities in both countries.
Their contribution over so many
years is to be admired and celebrated,”
said Andrew Moffatt, Senior Executive
Director.
Bridgestone will offer support
services to affected employees, in
conjunction with the relevant government
departments, unions and other agencies,
to assist with future employment
opportunities.
“It is our goal to help as many
of our employees as possible gain
alternative employment, either within the
Bridgestone organisation or in the wider
marketplace,” Mr Moffatt said.
Bridgestone has also announced it
will be working with local government
authorities in Adelaide and Christchurch
to gift some land currently owned by the
Company to recognise the enormous
contributions of the communities.
“We would also like to put on record
our thanks to the various levels of
government in both Australia and New
Zealand,” Mr Moffatt said. “As the last
tyre manufacturer in Australia and New
Zealand, we have all worked hard over
many years to avoid today’s decision.
However the unfortunate reality is that
Bridgestone Australia Ltd. can no longer
commercially justify the continued
operation of these facilities.”
The Adelaide facility has been
operating since 1965 and Christchurch
since 1947. “We are proud of the fact
that we have managed to keep these
two manufacturing facilities open for so
long and have provided employment and
economic benefits to so many people
over such a long period,” Mr Moffatt said.
Despite the announcement to cease new
tyre manufacturing in the region, Australia
and New Zealand are great places to
do business. Bridgestone Australia’s
headquarters remain here in Adelaide,
continuing its sales, distribution, retail
and other business activities throughout
Australia and New Zealand.
What’s going on in your workshop By William Barclay
I often feel the workshop department in a motorcycle dealership
is not valued as much as it should be.
I remember back in the seventies, I was working for the
Queensland Suzuki distributers rebuilding RE5 rotary engines (now
that’s showing my age). One day the owner came down and asked
me to investigate why that, although we looked busy, the workshop
was not making any money.
Now I love this sort of challenge and I really went to town looking
at everything from admin to mechanic ratios to labour efficiency.
However the biggest surprise to them was that the Workshop was
in fact making money, it was just that the accounting systems were
not reporting the internal work correctly. For example, a mechanic
could spend all day working on sales bikes but because the internal
transactions were not being reported accurately it showed Sales
making artificially high profits and the Workshop (and Parts) making
artificially low profits. Once we had accurate figures to work with it
was easy to make decisions to improve not only the Workshop but
business efficiency overall.
A few years later, after I had started my own motorcycle
dealership, we started looking for the ‘ultimate’ computer software
to make this sort of thing easier. We tested countless computerised
systems but they were either too long winded, or could not
efficiently handle what we needed to do. We decided that the only
way we were going to get everything we wanted was to design
a system ourselves. Our first system was called ‘Biketech’ and it
was a massive success in the UK (It has been the market leading
motorcycle dealer system there for over 20 years). However with
a changing industry, new technologies and the feedback from
hundreds of our dealers we felt we could do even better, and for the
last 8 years we have been quietly designing the latest generation of
Dealer Management System called ‘Evopos’ at our Development
centre in Queensland. The workshop features in Evopos are
exceptionally easy to use and brings dealer reporting to whole
new level. The workshop often used to be the last department to
be fully computerised. One reason was that it was hard to get a
computerised diary that was as easy to update and access as a
manual diary. Another reason is that it was just too difficult or timeconsuming
to log engineer’s time (especially on internal work).
Evopos can solve both these problems. And because we are getting
the full picture we are able manage and improve the workshop
much more effectively.
For example because we know the proficiency, efficiency
and productivity ratios for each engineer, we can reward good
performance and also highlight when an engineer may need
additional training (eg: if taking longer times on electrical jobs).
Evopos also helps in other areas, for example it helps ensure
parts are not missed off the invoice and it helps controls sundries
and consumables. Your customers will appreciate features like
the automatic SMS or email reminder when their job is ready or
parts are in. And with the automated ‘story’ generation, a detailed
description can be created in a few key presses which can help
enormously with the accepting of labour charges.
So give the workshop it’s fair due. It can be a great profit centre
and it is where many customers are won or lost.
MCSales boast over 3000 bikes
and 150 dealers Australia Wide
Nearly 150 Dealers around Australia,
have been signing up and embracing the
fresh new approach from the owners of
McSales, Steve Broberg and Kim Atkins
who are dedicated to giving all users
what is needed for the industry.
Mcsales.com.au is just getting bigger
and better, growing with many new and
unique features, users can not only
search for the exact make and model
they want, they can also search for
new, used, damaged or learner leagal
motorcycles, and if that’s not enough
searches can be carried out for just the
style. Also added to the search menu
are ATVs, Farm Utility Vehicles, Trike’s
and Jet Skis. Users then have the
choice to email, phone or drive straight
to the dealership by printing the full
listing page with Google Map location &
contact details shown.
While Dealer feedback is shaping the
site into just what motorcycle dealers,
farming and motorcycle community
wants, plans are afoot to expand the
site to accommodate Power Equipment,
Mowers, Ride-ons, Small Engines,
Pumps and Generators, as many country
and regional dealers also stock these
items for the property owners.
While McSales aims to provide the
best trading platform for all city and rural
Motorcycle Dealerships, it is also looking
into the demand of “dealer to dealer
wholesaling.” The wholesale prices
of dealer’s units will only be visible to
users who are logged in on their dealer
accounts, so private users won’t know
this feature exists at all. This just might
be the answer for old stock gathering
dust, when other dealers might have
ready buyers.
McSales can also provide upgrade
portals to replace dealers existing
Autogate or Trading post portals, if they
choose to switch to mcsales.com.au for
their “View All Our Bikes” Link on their
own website.
The upgrade portal will show all bikes
by a dealer, with no access to other
bikes on the site.
While there are four different
subscription plans to suit all size
dealerships, there is no hidden charges,
no contracts, no email lead charges, and
you will always be allowed to display full
contact details and dealer locations for
the life of www.mcsales.com.au.
All dealers still get a dedicated
their bikes. For set-up & Quarterly
BRP ADDS A TOURING MODEL TO ITS CAN-AM SPYDER ROADSTER LINE-UP
BRP introduces the new Can-Am
Spyder RT roadster in response to specific
consumer demand for a touring platform.
The 2010 Can-Am Spyder Roadster lineup
now includes the Spyder RS (Roadster
Sport) and RT (Roadster Touring) models.
The introduction of a touring model
coincides with a substantial gain in market
presence on the heels of strong consumer
demand since the roadster’s launch 2
years ago. Driven by a passionate owner
community, the innovative three-wheel
concept has become a global phenomenon
in more than 50 countries to-date.
“The Can-Am Spyder RS is already a
resounding market success, although,
clearly, its full growth potential is only
beginning to materialise,” said Australian
and New Zealand Can-Am Spyder Product
Manager Rohan Slater.
”We are delivering the expansion of
our Can-Am Spyder roadster line-up
as promised at its launch in 2007 and
believe the announcement of the Spyder
RT will further accelerate the momentum
experienced thus far.”
The Can-Am Spyder RT roadster
powered by a Rotax 991 engine with
Electronic Throttle Control optimized for
touring stays true to the brand’s promise
to deliver a perfect balance of performance
and peace of mind. The roadster features
the same acclaimed BOSCH-engineered
Vehicle Stability System (VSS) as found in
the Spyder RS roadster, which includes Antilock
Brakes, Traction Control and Stability
Control systems.
The VSS, coupled with the inherent
stability of the roadster’s ‘Y-architecture’
and overall ease of use reinvents riding for
enthusiasts of all skill levels.
BRP is also introducing an industry-first
optional RT622 trailer package, designed
specifically for the Spyder RT roadster,
which is compatible with the vehicle’s
stability system and provides an additional
622 litres of storage.
“The introduction of the Can-Am Spyder
RT now provides options for sport and
touring enthusiasts alike,” said Chris
Dawson, Vice-President and General
Manager, BRP International Division.
“BRP’s superior design and innovation
continues to deliver paradigm-shifting
vehicles that push the envelope and the RT
model is no exception.
The new platform goes brilliantly with
what touring riders demand and there is
no doubt in my mind the Can-Am Spyder
RT is going to forever change the touring
motorcycle category.”
MV Agusta launches new Brutale 990R and 1090RR
After years of success and with over
15,000 bikes sold worldwide, MV Agusta
has launched the all-new Brutale 990R and
1090RR on the prestigious Misano circuit in
Italy. “We are writing a new chapter in the
glorious history – rich in tradition and victories
of MV Agusta. A new chapter of renewed
excitement, commitment and investment in
the Brand and its future” commented Enrico
d’Onofrio, Managing Director of MV Agusta.
The new Brutale keeps the essential
lines of the model that over the years has
touched the heart of fans, while boosting
and enriching the technological content
almost all of the technical and aesthetic
components have been completely renewed.
The Brutale pushes the limits of research
and technology with its 2010 models - the
990R and the 1090RR. With its state-of-theart
components, the 2010 Brutale delivers
acclaimed performance and ease of riding,
in keeping with the “Made in MV” formula, a
commitment to excellence in components,
in the design of which MV Agusta is at the
forefront.
The “easy” handling enables the Brutale
to compete with the Japanese naked bikes,
it is agile and instinctive in the hands of
the rider. It excels on the racetrack, and its
eclectic elegance and charm thrill even the
casual admirer. To achieve these results,
it was necessary to replace 85% of the
components, but the new Brutale has
preserved the significant style features of
previous versions. The work carried out on
the 990R and 1090RR cannot be defined as
mere restyling rather, it is a silent MV Agusta
revolution.
Australian debut for top selling fuel stabiliser
The launch of America’s top selling
fuel stabiliser on the Australian market
is set to overcome starting and fuel
problems for cars and motorcycles not in
regular use, particularly classic, veteran
and vintage vehicles.
The world renowned STA-BIL Fuel
Stabiliser marketed in Australasia by
international company Trico Products,
addresses the serious issue of stale fuel
that can create problems for engines that
are stored for periods without use.
Fuel that is stored either in a can or in
the engine fuel tank, starts going stale
after a little more than a month, resulting
in hard starting, poor performance and
reduced engine life.
When added to fresh fuel, STA-BIL
Fuel Stabiliser stops the formation of gum
and varnish in engines.
It contains corrosion
prevention additives to fight the
damaging effects of Ethanol in
fuels and cleans fuel injectors
and carburettors, restoring
performance.
Marketed for over forty years
and recommended by more
than one hundred engine and
equipment manufacturers, STA-
BIL Fuel Stabiliser is safe to use in
any petrol engine and is used by
millions throughout the world.
It contains no additives that can harm
any engine, fuel injectors or catalytic
converters but until now has been
virtually unknown to Australian market
consumers who are yet to experience the
benefits of this amazing additive.
When storing vehicles for longer
periods, many people drain the fuel tank
creating a host of additional problems
as it is impossible to get all the fuel
out of the system simply by draining. It
generally requires the fuel lines to be
blown out otherwise sufficient fuel will
remain in the system to gum up the
engine. Once drained of fuel, bare metal
in the tank and system are exposed to air
and moisture causing harmful rust and
corrosion to form. Additionally, gaskets
tend to dry out and crack leading to leaks
when the system is refilled.
Draining fuel also creates its own
problems when attempting its disposal in
an environmentally safe way.
The addition of STA-BIL Fuel Stabiliser
to fresh fuel will keep it fresh for twelve
months. With double the recommended
STA-BIL dosage, fuel will remain fresh for
more than twenty-four months and its use
with Ethanol blend fuels prevents induced
water attraction and separation.
The ideal solution for cars and
motorcycles not in regular use is to add
STA-BIL Fuel Stabiliser to a full tank
of fresh fuel and be ready to go for a
quick start. STA-BIL is a concentrated
formula that requires just 30mL per 9.5
litres of fuel.
Suitable for all petrol engines the
extensive market potential applications
for STA-BIL covers cars (including classic,
veteran and vintage); motorcycles;
inboard and outboard marine
engines; lawnmowers; motorised
garden blowers and equipment;
chain saws; generator plants etc.
New STA-BIL Fuel Stabiliser is
available in handy 118mL, 236mL
and 473mL size bottles and once
a bottle of STA-BIL is opened the
formula will remain good for two
years.
A brand new range of tyres designed to meet the changing
needs of modern customs, cruisers and tourers.
With its unique snakeskin sidewalls, aggressive tread pattern and
low noise emissions, Cobra silently defeats all roads that stand in
its path.
Advanced manufacturing techniques used in Avon’s successful
sporty Viper range have been adapted and applied to Cobra, and
some of these features are:
WCTA - Wide Custom Tread Arc - is Avon’s new tyre profile that
gives Cobra characteristics once reserved only for agile race-bred
bikes, all without disrupting all-important stability.
A-VBD - Advanced-Variable Density Belt - improves handling in
the much wider Cobra sizes. This construction technology utilises
a jointless belt of ultra-strong material. Above the carcass, these
strands are wound closely together at the tyre’s centre for increased
stability and wear resistance. Towards the tyre’s edges the fibres are
then progressively spaced out to allow the tyre to take on a multicompound
effect as the tyre leans.
Tread Pattern: An aggressive tread pattern features:
FFG - Force Following Grooves - to follow the exact direction of
forces that are transferred through the tyre. These channels in the
tyre’s surface significantly reduce irregular and advanced wear on
bikes that carry heavy loads. Each Cobra rear tyre also features the
distinctive snake’s head logo on the sidewall.
Available in a wide range of sizes, incorporating fitments for
Harley Davidson’s V-Rod, Triumph’s Rocket III, Honda’s Goldwing
and Valkyrie plus some sizes for custom bike applications.
Kidbikers Australia Troppo Mesh Children’s Jackets
Kidbikers Australia is excited to
announce the availability of children’s
mesh motorcycle jacket in Australia.
“Our customers in Northern and Western
Australia have expressed to us that
their children can get hot on the back
of the bike in hotter weather,” says
Scott Plunkett, Director of Kidbikers
Australia. “Therefore, we have developed
a children’s mesh jacket to provide our
customers more choice in the protection
of their child especially during the
hotter months. The Chief Product Tester
[Plunkett’s daughter] loves the new
jacket.”
Pillion passengers can be less
exposed to the elements. Child pillion
passengers can be even less exposed
due to them being tucked in behind the
rider. Riding in warm/hot weather, child
pillion passengers can suffer from heat
exhaustion without adequate ventilation.
Mesh jackets allow for greater circulation
of air which makes them more suitable
for wearing in hot weather.
Besides providing relief during
summer, mesh jackets also offer
maximum protection.
These Jackets feature ultrabreathable,
abrasion resistant poly mesh
body fabric construction for maximum
airflow; cordura shoulder and elbow
panels for additional protection; CE
shoulder, elbow, and back protections.
They also come with hook n loop waist
adjustment; velcro straps with TPR pulls
for customised fit; multi-position snap
arm adjusters and elasticised cuffs for
customised fit; two external pockets; and
YKK Zippers to off the jacket.
Mesh motorcycle jackets are ideally
suited for providing protection from the
elements, water and heat, abrasion,
and against accidents, and can make a
ride more pleasant and comfortable for
children and therefore making the ride
with that special person more enjoyable.
Draggin Jeans are stepping up their
impact protection with their new comfort fit
Draggin Jeans Knee Guard.
The Draggin Jeans Knee Guard delivers
greater freedom of choice and comfort for
all riders and may be worn comfortably
under any pair of Draggin Jeans.
The Draggin Jeans Knee Guard
is CE approved for road use, and is
soft and malleable. Utilising advanced
Knox technology, Draggin Jeans Knee
Guards avoid the need for a hard
outer shell that can shatter on impact.
Draggin Jeans has always
promoted the use of impact protection
through the insertion of existing
armour pieces, however always strives
to deliver riders greater comfort and
flexibility.
The new Knee Guard features an
easy step through “sleave” design and
is constructed with a non-allergenic
stretch sports liner that is soft and
breathable. Held with comfortable
elastic and with a sturdy velcro strap, the
Knee Guard attaches directly to the leg and
therefore remains in the correct position at
all times.
Draggin Jeans’s General Manager, Fiona
Mackintosh, is excited about offering riders
even greater safety and protection.
Draggin Jeans Knee Guards – Comfort, Freedom
and Protection In One Neat Package!
“Draggin Jeans has always been
in the business of safeguarding
motorcyclists. The new Draggin Jeans
Knee Guard is a perfect addition to our
product range and offers riders greater
freedom of choice when it comes to
comfortable, safe riding.”
“We explored many options for
inserting armour into our products.
It is difficult with pants, as every rider,
and riding position, is different.
In fixing the armour directly to the
pants, with a pocket or any other
means, there is no way to ensure
that it always sits correctly. With
the Draggin Jeans Knee Guard, the
CE approved armour is held directly to
the knee and is therefore always in the
right position, whomever the rider and
whatever the riding position.
n Pirelli Night Dragon – Where
performance meets the street
The new Pirelli Night Dragon performance cruiser
tyre is now available in Australia. The new Night
Dragon introduces a new generation of custom
touring tyres, dedicated to American and Metric V-Twin
cruiser motorcycles. Driven by racing technology, the
Night Dragon is aggressively designed to give big
improvements in straight line grip and overall handling
with respectable mileage.
Developed over three years in the USA and Europe,
the Night Dragon is aimed at riders who want a set of
performance tyres that don’t sacrifice handling for long
mileage. It matches the evolution of new bikes needs
in terms of traction and grip, offering riders a new type
of tyre not available in the market place before. The latest generation of
hot-rodded v-twin bikes with increased engine sizes, more horsepower,
more torque and upgraded suspension creates a combination that
demands performance tyres dedicated to transferring that performance
to the street.
The secret to the Night Dragons performance is the exclusive design
of its contact patch. It’s a new shape with a larger dimension, allowing
for new compounds to increase durability and traction. This new
structure also provides optimum pressure distribution across the contact
patch with unmatched riding comfort.
The Night Dragons street wise tread pattern blends both style and
riding performance. Its tread pattern maximizes the contact patch for
fast warm up, quickly giving the rider the confidence of stability and
traction. At the same time, the hydrodynamics of its groove placement
offers efficient draining in wet riding conditions. The Night Dragon’s
front tread design cuts a path through the water for the rear tyre, while
the calibrated grooves of the rear tyre disperse the residual water for
more grip in wet conditions. The Night Dragon’s claimed performance
advantage is achieved with new front and rear tyre profiles. This gives
the tyres a linear steering response and quick handling. Combined with
the Night Dragon’s structural balance between stiffness and flexibility,
there is predictable handling at every lean angle.
With a proprietary compound derived from Pirelli’s racing
developments and street tyre experience, the Night Dragon tyres
provide high grip at full lean and full throttle, using the latest trends in
performance tyre design.
Genuine Yamaha Pistons
The piston reciprocates in the cylinder
at high speed and is constantly exposed
to high temperature (400 to 500°C) as well
as pressure (30 to 50 kg/cm2).
The piston materials must meet various
requirements including mechanical
strength, thermal conductivity for good
heat dissipation, low thermal expansion,
etc. They must also be light.
Therefore, a genuine Yamaha piston
combined result of state-of-the-art material
technology, microscopic designing
and manufacturing and machining
technologies.
Even a comparison test of only three
High Performance Protection Boosts Productivity
Ansell has released its HyFlex® 11-435 glove in response to the need for
high level hand protection that provides day long comfort for people handling
sharp or slippery objects and materials.
Sales and Marketing Director, Jérôme Feuvrier, said the glove had been
developed for people working in environments where they are required to
handle slightly oily parts or glass, sharp objects, components, sheet metal and
ceramics.
“Engineered from a proprietary composite of nylon, fibreglass and
Dyneema®, the silicone-free HyFlex is antistatic, while the glove’s liner
provides excellent breathability and a “cool” feeling. Its unique design prevents
polyurethane penetration through the glove liner, resulting in a softer, more
natural feel on the skin”. He said.
According to Ansell, this knitted and seamless, 13-gauge supported and
dipped cut resistant level 5 glove provides extreme resistance to cuts, abrasions
and burrs and complies with AS/NZS 2161.3:2005.
At the same time, its ergonomic design is said to significantly reduce user
fatigue by minimising resistance to normal hand and finger movements.
“The HyFlex 11-435 glove’s excellent
washability ensures prolonged service life.
Trials at major European glass, automotive
and aerospace companies listed cut resistance,
comfort and grip as the glove’s top three attributes.
These benefits make this personal protection
ideal for use in industries such as automotive
manufacture, mining, metal fabrication, glass and
transport”, Feuvrier continued.
You Can Save Hours Of Wasted Workshop Time
With technology advancing at an
ever increasing rate on motorcycles, you
may be thinking about upgrading your
workshop and purchasing specialist fuel
injection diagnosis equipment, whether
it be a full on ecu diagnostic system or a
simple code reader.
However, you may not see a large
volume of fuel injected bikes so perhaps at
this time cannot justify a potentially large
outlay on something you may only need
once a month.
In difficult financial times you need to
be looking at smarter ways to increase
revenue and reduce time spent on
everyday jobs that can regularly throw
up a problem, often meaning you need
to spend more time than you can charge
for, just to diagnose a fault and advise the
customer of what you have found.
One of these everyday jobs is
carburettor balancing, or throttle body
synchronising. How many times have
you DEKA wasted HH 14/9/04 time hunting 4:44 for that PM elusive Page 1
perfect idle You are unsure if your stick
gauges have dirt in the tube causing them
to read incorrectly, so you strip them,
clean them, put them back together only
Often Meaning You Need
To Spend More Time
Than You Can Charge For
Just To Diagnose
A Fault And Advise
The Customer Of
What You Have Found
to find that you still can’t get a perfect idle.
So it’s not the gauges, it’s the bike One
of the easiest things to check is to remove
the diaphragm caps so see if any of them
have a hole or are not seated properly.
If you’re lucky enough to be able to do
that without removing too many other
parts, then hopefully soon you’ll find the
problem. So after removing the diaphragm
cap off of all four carbies, you find that
the 4 th one is the one with a hole in it! Well
isn’t that typical
It would have been great to know which
one had the problem so you could have
got straight to it, advising the customer
of further work required, and being able
to justify extra costs with a printout of the
vacuum waveform showing before and
after tests.
The Bikevac Inlet Analyser is that tool
- specifically designed for motorcycles
using the latest technology.
Computer diagnostic analysers have
been available to the motor trade for
many years now and are accepted as
being the only way to set up car engines’
carburettors and fuel injection systems.
Even though modern motorcycles have
multi carburettor or multi injector systems
requiring accurate individual balancing,
motorcycle workshops have had to put up
with 50 year old technology and a set of
dial or stick vacuum gauges.
The BikeTech Digital Vacuum Analyser
6mm threaded adaptors and a T-Piece are
provided for connection to engines which
require them.
The Digital Interface connects to the PC
via a single USB connection.
The BikeTech software provides all the
display, storage and printing facilities. The
use of a computer to do this means that
Instead of just measuring the average
amount of negative pressure in the way
a vacuum gauge does, the BikeTech
Vacuum Analyser is able to precisely
analyse all the characteristics of the
vacuum depression waves in the inlet
tracts. With a dial gauge or mercury stick
gauge you will see a heavily damped
average of the rising and falling vacuum
whereas with a computerised tool using
accurate fast acting transducers can
display the whole story, millisecond by
millisecond.
The advantages are that synchronisation
is far more accurate and the graphical
display gives the user an insight into the
whole induction process and the state of
the valves and combustion chamber.
Defective inlet & exhaust valves &
camshafts, induction leaks and even
incorrect valve clearances can be
pinpointed, saving hours of wasted
workshop labour time.
The Bike Tech Features include:
• Engine speed in R.P.M. is displayed
during all induction tests.
• Bar graph display of up to 4
simultaneous vacuum inputs – for
basic balancing.
• Digital displays showing minimum
and maximum vacuum of up to 4
simultaneous inputs over P.M. range.
• ideal for indicating worn piston rings.
• Graph display showing vacuum
depression curves of each cylinder.
Bikevacinletleak1
At idle there is clearly less vacuum on carbie 2 ()green) shown
by a lower maximum vacuum at the point just before the piston
starts to rise and all valves are closed (top of curve). Also the
curve is closer to the horizontal line than the red curve, again
indicating less vacuum being drawn as the piston moves down.
By interpreting these curves it is
possible to identify induction leaks,
faults with inlet and exhaust valves, or
related faults such as camshaft
lobe wear etc. Up to 4 curves can be
memorised for detailed analysis.
• The tests can be saved with customer
and bike details together with any
brief notes.
Powered simply via the USB cable,
the analyser is extremely simple to use
despite its high specification.
Genuine Yamaha oil filters
Genuine Yamaha oil filters are the result
of careful research and development
efforts taking all these conditions into
consideration. As a leading manufacturer
of motorcycles, Yamaha has set forth very
strict standards with regard to the filtration
power of the filter paper, the quality of the
adhesives, the spring pressure of the relief
valve, etc. Only products of high-quality
materials and sophisticated assembly
technology are offered to the market as
genuine Yamaha oil filters.
An oil filter prevents infiltration of foreign
matter into the engine
An engine is an easy victim of fouling
due to combustion in the combustion
chamber and movement of engine
parts. Impurities in the fuel and oil can
easily turn into sludge and friction between
the cylinder and piston rings can create
fine metallic powder.
This fouling is washed away by engine
oil so that the engine can maintain its
normal function.
However, since engine oil is used
continuously over a long period of time
before the next periodic renewal, the
sludge and metallic powder are often
released back into the engine.
Oil must be protected from deterioration
due to repeated fouling.
The oil filter is designed to prevent refouling
of the engine and deterioration
of engine oil due to fouling, thereby
prolonging the oil’s life as much as
possible.
Various conditions that affect oil filter
Engine oil is subjected to a large load
when the engine is running resulting in a
rise in both oil pressure and temperature.
The oil temperature sometimes rises to as
high as 150°C in a high-rev type engine.
Since the oil filter is exposed directly to
extreme pressure and temperature, high
resistance against oil and heat is required
of oil filters.
When the engine oil is still new, oxides
created by sludge are neutralized by
neutralizing agents and other additives
in the engine oil thereby maintaining the
oil’s original performance. Therefore,
effects upon the oil filter are kept within
the design data. After the oil has been
used over a long period of time, however,
it loses some of its neutralizing power
and the oxides tend to remain in the oil.
These oxides have harsh effects on the
filter paper, gasket, adhesive and other
elements of the oil filter.
For instance, the original filtration power
is seriously damaged by melting of the
adhesive, carbonizing and decomposition
of the filter paper, etc. In the worst case,
the decomposed adhesive and filter paper
clogs lubrication paths which, in turn, can
lead to a seized engine.
Construction of genuine Yamaha oil
filters (4X7-13440-90)
An oil filter has a relatively simple
design and is made up of a plate, element,
adhesive, gasket, and relief valve.
Filter paper
The filter paper is folded many times to
maximize the effective filtration area. (In
the case of 4X7, the filtration area is over
420cm2 with 40+2 folds and the effective
filtration area is over 380cm2.) In addition,
two-ply paper is used to prevent clogging.
The filter paper is made coarse on the
surface and fine on the reverse so that
s e r v i c i n g
larger particles are trapped on the surface
and finer ones are caught deeper in the
paper. The filter paper is joined firmly by
metal fasteners to prevent oil leakage.
Gasket
The gasket is a seal to completely
channel the fouled oil to the element. It is
made of rubber to prevent oil leakage.
Adhesive
Adhesive is used to join the metallic
plate, punching metal and element
firmly. It is made of high-quality material
having a very high bonding strength,
resistance against temperatures above
150°C, and resistance against melting due
to oxides.
Relief valve
The relief valve remains idle during
normal use of the oil filter. When the
element becomes clogged after long use
and the engine oil loses its lubricating
power, it serves as a bypass mechanism
for the engine oil to protect the engine
from seizure and other problems.
Relief valves are manufactured
individually with appropriate pressure
settings so that they open when the oil
pressure rises due to clogging.
Oxygen Sensors
Written by Clive Ward, www.motorcyclebiz.com.au
The way they work, the effect they
have on the engine management system
and a way of testing them.
In most Oxygen Sensors there is a
Zirconia element that, when heated to
temperatures above approximately 300
deg C, produce voltages that are based
on the oxygen content surrounding the
sensor tip, as compared to the oxygen in
the atmosphere.
Oxygen sensors perform this
comparison through an atmospheric
reference orifice in the sensor housing.
If the atmospheric reference orifice
is blocked with road grime, mud or
in some cases, dried crankcase oil,
the performance of the sensor will
be impaired to a point that will cause
poor fuel economy, excessive exhaust
emissions and in severe cases,
motorcycle rideability problems.
Always visually inspect the oxygen
sensor. If the sensor is externally
covered with any form of contaminant
there is a very good likelihood that the
sensor will not perform to optimum
capacity due to the atmospheric
reference orifice being blocked.
Pay particular attention to oxygen
sensors that are located on off-road
Motorcycles as they are prone to mud
contamination.
Another easy to perform physical
test, is to determine whether or not
the sensor is securely tightened in the
exhaust system. Because any electrical
circuit has to be complete before the
current can flow, poor contact between
the sensor securing thread (sensor
grounding point) and the exhaust system
will cause erratic, poor, or incorrect
oxygen sensor signals to be sent to the
ECU, also check that the exhaust is tight.
Engine air/fuel mixtures.
It is easy to determine what air/fuel
mixture is being used by an engine by
observing the output of the Oxygen
Sensor. Connect a labscope or high
quality multimeter to the signal wire.
An engine that is running continually
lean will cause the Oxygen Sensor to
produce a low voltage on the signal wire.
This voltage will be between 0.45 V and
0.00 V.
The cause of this symptom could
be unmetered air entering the intake
manifold, aerated fuel, low fuel pressure
or restricted injectors. Leaking exhaust
header pipe will also cause additional
oxygen to be present in the exhaust
gases.
An engine that is running continually
rich will cause the Oxygen Sensor to
produce a high voltage.
The cause of this could be high fuel
pressure, faulty coolant temperature
circuit, faulty MAP (manifold absolute
pressure) sensor circuit, air temperature
sensor circuit, or faulty TPS (throttle
Position Sensor) circuit.
An engine management system that
is functioning correctly and thus has
a correct air/fuel ratio will cause the
oxygen sensor to produce a voltage
that will transition rapidly back and forth
across the 0.45 volt mark. See Figure: 1,
snapshot view of a correctly operating
O2 sensor on a labscope.
Important note:
For those of you who think that
you’ll improve the performance of a
motorcycle by disconnecting the O2
sensor, think again.
The O2 sensor only works up to 80%
throttle, after that the ECU enters WOT
mode (Wide Open Throttle), ignores
the 02 sensor and delivers the higher
quantity of fuel needed to produce
maximum performance, the only thing
you’ll achieve by disconnecting the
02 sensor is that you’ll dramatically
increase the fuel consumption and
cause over-rich spluttering through the
low and mid-range.
SINGLE WIRE OXYGEN SENSOR.
This sensor is mounted in the exhaust
with the sensing portion exposed to the
exhaust gas stream. When the sensor
has reached an operating temperature
of more than 300 deg C, it acts as a
voltage generator, capable of producing
a rapidly changing voltage of between
10 and 1,000 millivolts.
This voltage output is dependent
on the oxygen content in the exhaust
gas, as compared to the oxygen in the
sensor’s atmospheric oxygen reference
cavity. This reference cavity is exposed
BIKEBusiness
t e c h o t a l k
to the atmosphere through a small “vent”
hole located under the sensor’s external
metal vent cover.
The single wire Oxygen sensor uses
the engine as a ground reference and
has a single signal wire going back to
the Motorcycles ECU.
When the sensor is cold, it produces
either no voltage, or an unusable slowly
changing one. At this point the ECU is
operating in “open loop” using a preprogrammed
fuel map. Also when the
sensor is cold, its internal electrical
resistance is high.
ECU’s that are associated with this
type of Oxygen Sensor usually supply
a steady 450 millivolt, very low current
“bias” voltage to the Oxygen Sensor
circuit.
When the sensor is cold and not
producing any voltage, the ECU “sees”
only the steady bias voltage. As the
sensor begins heating, its internal
resistance decreases and it begins
producing a rapidly changing voltage
that will overshadow the ECU-supplied
steady bias voltage. When the ECU
“sees” the changing voltage it knows the
sensor is hot and its output is ready to
be used for the job of “fine-tuning” the
engine’s fuel requirements.
The ECU monitors the changing
voltage transition above and below a mid
range of approximately 450 millivolts,
to determine when to operate in the
“closed-loop” mode.
When the fuel system is correctly
operating in the closed-loop mode,
the sensor voltage output is rapidly
changing, going above and below a
rich/lean midpoint range of between 250
to 450 millivolts. The ECU monitors the
change in voltage and corrects the air/
fuel ratio by lengthening or shortening
the time injectors are open to provide a
richer or leaner air/fuel mixture.
To measure the amount of time the
injectors are open, place your labscope
tool on any injector and measure the
pulse width in milliseconds. With the
Oxygen sensor sending a rich signal, i.e.
a high voltage, the millisecond reading
at the injector will fall.
Conversely with the Oxygen sensor
sending a lean signal to the ECU, i.e. a
low voltage, the millisecond reading at
the injector will rise.
OXYGEN SENSORS WITH HEATERS
(3 wire sensors)
Some Oxygen Sensors utilise a
Zirconia element and operate the
same way as described for single
wire Oxygen Sensors but they also
have the added advantage of a heater
element. This heating element allows
the Oxygen Sensor to stay at operating
temperature even though the exhaust
gas temperature is below 300 deg C.
In these systems the ECU remains in
closed-loop when the engine is idling,
i.e. in the closed throttle position.
The advantage of this is the Oxygen
Sensor signal is always available to
the ECU as after initial Oxygen Sensor
warm-up as it never cools down until the
engine is switched off. These sensors
have a 12 volt positive and negative
supply from the ECU as well as the
signal wire, hence the 3 wire reference.
Never short any of the 3 wires together.
Sensor failures
Normally, the lifetime of an unheated
sensor is about 30,000 to 50,000
kilometres, but some can last up to
100,000kms. Failure of an unheated
sensor is usually caused by the buildup
of soot on the ceramic element, which
lengthens its response time and may
cause total loss of ability to sense
oxygen. For heated sensors, normal
deposits are burnt off during operation
and failure occurs due
to catalyst depletion,
similar to the reason
a battery stops
producing current.
The probe then
tends to report a
constant lean mixture,
the ECU enriches
the mixture, the
exhaust gets rich with
carbon monoxide and
hydrocarbons, and the
fuel comsumption increases.
Leaded petrol contaminates the
oxygen sensors and catalytic converters.
Most oxygen sensors are rated for some
service life in the presence of leaded
gasoline but sensor life will be shortened
to as little as 10,000kms depending on
the lead concentration. Lead-damaged
sensors typically have their tips
discolored light rusty.
Another common cause of
premature failure of lambda probes is
contamination of fuel with silicones,
used in gasket sealing operations In this
case, the deposits on the sensor are
colored between shiny white and grainy
light gray.
To prevent this use sensor safe
silicons on Motorycles with O2 sensors.
An overly rich mixture causes buildup
of black powdery deposit on the probe.
This may be caused by failure of the
probe itself, or by a problem elsewhere
in the fuel management system.
Applying an external voltage to the
zirconia sensors, e.g. by checking them
with some types of ohmmeters, may
damage them. So never do it.
Only test by viewing voltage.
Symptoms of a failing oxygen sensor
includes:
• Sensor Light on dash indicates
problem
• Increased tailpipe emissions (possibly
even black smoke)
• Increased fuel consumption
• Hesitation on acceleration
• Stalling
• Rough idling
Dropped, kicked and beaten but HEMIPRO LEDs
outshine anything else on the market
One of the first automotive workshops
to adopt the rugged new HEMIPRO
High Power Worklights reports that they
have defied all efforts to kill them and they
continue to provide much better light than
ever before.
“They have been dropped, kicked,
knocked, thrown and they are still shining
brightly. They are bloody excellent,” says
Cameron Brooks, of Brooks Motors,
Albury’s Suzuki dealership and Landrover
specialists.
“Previously we used normal LED
portable lights, but since we got
HEMIPROs the other ones have stayed on
the shelf. These are much better, because
not only are they tougher, but also they
provide a significantly broader spectrum of
light and much greater clarity.”
“The older blokes here used to grizzle
that sometimes they couldn’t see things
properly under the bonnet, and had to
take them outside so they could. Now they
are real happy,” said Mr Brooks.
Manufactured by Cliplight and
being introduced to Australasia by GO
Distribution, HEMIPRO worklights are
designed to provide 10 years or more of
optimum clarity and safety in maintenance
tasks.
They incorporate the first use of
high-power LEDs in work lights for the
automotive repair market, with strong
benefits also for applications such as
industrial heavy vehicle, electrical, farm
and machinery maintenance workshops.
Their retail appeal is further enhanced
by their being highly appropriate for
consumer use around campsites,
caravans and the booming number of
recreational vehicles and associated
activities.
So outstanding is their performance
that they were selected as a “Product of
the Month” by the USA’s Professional
Tool and Equipment News magazine,
circulation 104,000.
Using either two or three High Power
LEDS, the HEMIPRO 2 LED and 3 LED
work lights provide exceptionally powerful
beams which, respectively, equal or
exceed the light area intensity of a 60W or
75W beam, says GO Distribution Director
Mr Gary Oborne.
“What really sets the HEMIPRO lights
apart, however, is the patent-pending,
uniquely engineered hemispherical lens
design, which refracts the LEDs into
an exceptionally clean, bright and wide
beam. The highly modified lens design
captures and transfers the powerful LED
light into a super-wide 70 deg beam, while
also eliminating hot spots, dull areas or
irritating halo rings.”
Cameron Brooks says these qualities
will be an advantage in the prestige and
show work his company undertakes
(including drag race vehicles and a
custom Harley that won Best Bike at the
Sydney Bike Show.
With the attention to detail required
carrying out the day to day servicing of
vehicles it is essential to have the best
workshop lighting available.
Designed to provide high performance
for 10 years or more of normal use,
HEMIPRO incorporates features to help
ensure its longevity including:
• Tough polycarbonate patent-pending
LUMIGUARD lens shield. This protects
the lens and can be easily and quickly
replaced if it gets scratched, cracked
or tarnished. Rather than throwing away
the entire work light, users can simply
replace the LUMIGUARD in less than
two minutes.
• Similarly, the super strong NiMH 2500
milliAmp hour battery in the 2 LED and
3 LED cordless models are rechargeable
and replaceable.
However, replacement will not happen
too often, says GO Distribution, because
as the battery has a life expectancy of
three years under normal use. The 2
LED can be used up to five hours
between charges. The 3 LED is good for
three hours between charges. Even the
360° swivel hook can be replaced.
Designed by the international Cliplight
Manufacturing Company, which is now in
its fourth decade of producing top quality
worklights, HEMI PRO complements
an innovative range of HVAC products
available from GO Distribution, including
Super Seal sealants that help remove
the need for expensive fault-chasing
and repairs to commercial, industrial
and automotive air conditioning and
refrigeration systems.
