The number of African women appointed to<br />

<strong>the</strong> List of Assistants to Counsel increased from<br />

five at <strong>the</strong> beginning of <strong>the</strong> campaign 232 to 29<br />

in July 2011. African women appointees thus<br />

represent 45% of all <strong>the</strong> women <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> List (29<br />

out of 64) and 25% of all <strong>the</strong> individuals <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

List of Assistants to Counsel (29 out of 114).<br />

According to <strong>the</strong> campaign report, all<br />

complete applicati<strong>on</strong>s received from African<br />

women have been decided up<strong>on</strong>. However <strong>the</strong>re<br />

are a high number of incomplete applicati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

still pending. 233<br />

On 26 May 2011, <strong>the</strong> Calling Arab Counsel<br />

campaign was launched by <strong>the</strong> ICC. 234 Currently,<br />

<strong>the</strong> number of appointees coming from Arab<br />

countries 235 <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> List of Legal Counsel is nine,<br />

of whom <strong>on</strong>ly <strong>on</strong>e is a woman (Tunisia). 236<br />

On <strong>the</strong> List of Assistants to Counsel, <strong>on</strong>ly <strong>on</strong>e<br />

male appointee comes from an Arab country<br />

(Arab Republic of Egypt). 237 C<strong>on</strong>sidering that<br />

two out of <strong>the</strong> seven Situati<strong>on</strong>s currently under<br />

investigati<strong>on</strong> by <strong>the</strong> ICC are Arabic-speaking<br />

countries (Libya and Sudan), an increase in <strong>the</strong><br />

number of appointees to both lists with <strong>the</strong>se<br />

language skills is necessary in <strong>the</strong> coming<br />

m<strong>on</strong>ths.<br />
