welcome!
It is my pleasure to welcome you to WildAid’s first ever global
marine protected area enforcement conference in the city by
the bay. We hope you are able to take advantage of the wealth of
information and expertise presented in this conference and apply
lessons learned in your respective field.
We have gone to great lengths in order to ensure representation
of a diverse sample of MPAs with differing complexities, resource
levels, sizes, and management models among other characteristics
from over 30 countries spanning six continents. We
have targeted individuals from varying disciplines to enrich this
experience. With us this week are fishery enforcement officials,
Navies, scientists, lawyers, academics, technology firms, NGOs
and foundation officers.
Overall we aim to discuss the key components of the law enforcement
chain and explore innovative strategies to overcome
common obstacles to MPA enforcement. We encourage you to
sit in on different tracks throughout the week and familiarize
yourself with new disciplines and/or new regions of the world.
We are confident that many models and mechanisms can be
cross-pollinated with minor adjustments. Last, but not least,
we encourage you to explore some of the unique sites and great
cuisines that San Francisco has to offer.
