Sponsorship Package 2012-2013

The Team
McGill Baja Racing
We are a group of over fifty McGill University students of various
academic levels working together to design and manufacture a
prototype off-road vehicle. While the team consists mostly of
engineering students we have members from all faculties on campus.
The McGill Baja Racing Team offers a unique opportunity for
students to apply the theory they learn in class to real engineering
processes. We foster an educational culture, where veterans teach
new members design, analysis and manufacturing skills. Students
also learn teamwork, project management and business skills.
This year we are bigger than ever before, with twenty returning
members and over forty new recruits. With a larger and stronger
team for the coming year we will tackle new challenges and push
further than ever before.

The Car
MB 13
A baja is a single seat, off-road race car able to conquer all
types of terrain. It can drive across lakes, fly off jumps, go
over boulders and two foot diameter logs, and climb 45
degree slopes. We race on dirt, mud, snow, ice, rocks and any
terrain imaginable.
All teams are supplied with an identical 10hp Briggs and
Stratton engine; it is the only component of the car we cannot
tamper with. Every other aspect of the car must be
independently designed and built by the team.
This year the team is undertaking several ambitious design
goals that will push us ahead of the competition. For the first
time ever in McGill Baja History, our Baja will include the
following:
- Custom Uprights and Hubs
- Custom Rack and Pinion Steering
- Custom F-N-R Gearbox
- 65 km/h Top Speed
- Carbon Fiber Panels and Guards
- Dashboard and Data-Acquisiton System

The Competition
Overview
The Baja SAE competitions are the pinnacle of our year and
the proving grounds of the vehicle. They are hosted by SAE
International (Society of Automotive Engineers) and are attended
by over 100 Universities, thousands of engineering students and
hundreds of industry professionals. This year, our team plans to
compete in four competitions, the highest number ever for Mcgill
Baja.
Competition events take place over three days and are
divided in the following way:
Day One - Static Events
On the first day of the competition, the cars are put through
a series of rigorous safety tests, and are judged by automotive
industry experts based on design features, manufacturability and
overall appearance. The design event is almost a competition in
itself and is one of the most prestigious events.
Day Two - Dynamic Events
These short events usually consist of a rock crawl, a hill climb,
acceleration, mudbog, tractor pull, land maneuvrability and the
crowd favorite: suspension and traction.
Day Three - The Endurance Race
The Endurance Race is a four hour, wheel to wheel race with
over 100 baja SAE vehicles. This race is a huge spectator event with
cars trying to compete as many laps as possible in the allotted time.
The endurance race track includes sections of the suspension and
traction course, a mud bog, several wooded sections, rock crawls
and numerous jumps. It is usually about five or six kilometers long
and pushes the vehicle to its limits. If something breaks during the
race, teams must rush to fix the car to get it back on the track.
Endurance is so taxing on the cars that fewer than thirty cars finish
the Race.

Sponsorship
McGill is home to over 30,000 students from across the globe, has a world
renowned undergraduate engineering program and a strong history of excellence
in student design competitions. By sponsoring us, your company is associating
itself with a tradition of success. Our team is coming off our most succesful
season in a decade with:
-4th Place Sales
-12th Place Design
-15th Acceleration
-16th Maneuverability
With your help we expect to extend that succes and finish in the Top 10 in every
competition we attend in the coming year.
The team will gladly accept donations of materials or services as well as
monetary donations. Tax deductible reciepts are available for individual or
corporate donations by request. In-kind sponsorships will receive recognition
according to their retail value. Information is listed in the table below.
Tooling
Building a car is expensive, however, construction actually
composes less than half of our yearly budget. Funding is allocated
primarily towards travel and fees associated with competition such
as registration, truck rentals, and fuel. The second and third largest
parts of our budget are the materials and labour required to build
the car, though much of our material and labour is graciously
donated making what we do possible.
This season we have added space in our budget for testing. We
found this to be the weakest point in our team and the area in which
we may improve our results the most. We’ve reorganized the team
and adopted an aggresive design schedule that will allow for plenty
of testing time. This will enable us to validate our design choices
and different setups: the last piece of the puzzle.
