Capital Campaign — A Letter Message from Dean Hickey ’83 Vice President, Development and Alumni Relations Dear Alumni and Friends, O n October 19, 2007 our college announced that it has entered into a capital campaign to raise $7.5 million to fund major improvements to the Borger Academic Center and to build a new fitness/wellness center. This announcement marks a major milestone in the development of the institution. Becker College and Leicester Junior College trace their shared past to 1784, and our mission has never been more important. Historically, Becker College has provided educational opportunities to first-generation college students. I have heard numerous stories about alumni who came to Becker because it was their ONLY opportunity to obtain a college degree. These types of stories are still being written today. Becker College remains of critical importance because it offers a way to a better life for many who have so few of these opportunities. This waiver is not valid without the signature of a Becker representative. The applicant must complete the information below and submit this waiver with the completed application. NAME RELATIONSHIP TO BECKER COLLEGE SIGNATURE Driven by higher costs, tuition at all colleges has increased dramatically. As a result, competition for students who can afford a college education has also increased. Fortunately, Becker College offers two beautiful campuses that are attractive to both students and parents. Research indicates, however, that some of our current facilities need improvement, and we are making the necessary investments so that the College can continue to attract a diverse student population. As alumni and friends of Becker College, we have all benefited from our relationship with the institution. Many of us live happily with good jobs and nice homes to support beautiful families. We have been blessed with an opportunity to improve ourselves and, as alumni, have a responsibility to do what we can so that others who follow have the same opportunity. I understand that very few of us can write a big check. It may not be apparent now, but every gift, big or small, changes lives. We can make a gift over several years, or better yet, we can include something for Becker in our estate plans. I have chosen to have a modest amount deducted from my pay each week for the next five years. Please understand that Becker really does need your help. As a small college, our resources are very limited and we need your financial support to fulfill our mission and provide educational opportunities to promising young people who need a helping hand. We are proud of our alumni and grateful for your past, present and future advocacy. This is clearly the hour of our greatest need. Thank you for anything you can do in support of your college. ALUMNI PROFILES Carol M. Erickson '48..................7 Reflecting on her life has Carol asking “Wow! Where did the years go?” Carol (Cutting) Erickson ’48 graduated from Becker Junior College 60 years ago and has retired from a long and fascinating career at Worcester’s Hahnemann Hospital. Dan Prouty '71............................9 After graduating with his associate’s degree from Leicester Junior College in 1971, Dan went immediately to work in real estate. “I’ve been lucky”, Dan stresses with a smile. “My mentor and first business partner and I were in the right place, at the right time.” EQUESTRIANS PUT ON A SHOW ..19 The Becker College Equestrian Center was a hub of activity leading up to its debut as host for the kick-off of the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) 2007-2008 season.
