The Liggett Senior Project
In order to encourage responsibility, independence, and self-reliance in our graduates, University Liggett School
requires that seniors complete an internship. Since 1972, Liggett seniors have spent the last four weeks of their
senior year working on Senior Projects. A commitment of at least 30 hours per week, without pay, is required,
and the work, study, and/or service is performed under the supervision of a professional in the field. We feel
that the exposure to the world of work outside of the classroom is an appropriate culmination to a student's days
at Liggett and a valuable transition to more independent work.
General Guidelines and Expectations
We ask seniors, parents, and supervisors to fully understand the philosophy and expectations of the Senior
Project. Seniors should seek sound and engaging projects where they will be held to standards and given
responsibilities that are worthy of their time and efforts. Supervisors are asked to consider their ability to
responsibly engage the senior. If a prospective supervisor feels unable to provide such responsibilities, we
encourage that supervisor to direct the senior elsewhere. Liggett expects its students to be punctual and
diligent, and it is reasonable for a supervisor to expect the same level of commitment.
Guidelines for seniors, parents and supervisors:
All senior projects involve four 30-hour weeks of work without pay. The student is expected to adhere to this
schedule and notify Liggett of any changes or absences. The daily schedule should be such that the work hours are
commensurate with the hours of the school day.
Please note that a Pass /Fail grade for Senior Project will appear on the student’s final, permanent Liggett transcript.
The senior must interview with the on-site supervisor of the intended project and submit a proposal signed by the
senior, the supervisor, and a parent/guardian.
The proposal form must be completed in full by the due date. Incomplete or inadequately completed forms will be
returned immediately without approval.
Any senior without a project proposal submitted by April 5, for any reason, will lose Senior Privileges.
There must be a location - office, work site, etc. where the project is to be completed.
Duties must be specific according to the instructions of the proposal form.
Athletic commitments or Advanced Placement Exams may occasionally interrupt the senior’s project schedule.
Seniors must take these into account when completing the proposal form and are expected to participate in all
practices and competitions.
The intent of the Senior Project is to have the senior engage in the wider professional community outside of Liggett.
To this end, proposals that include academic work to be completed under the supervision of a Liggett faculty
member are prohibited.
Students going on projects must be in good academic standing -- at least a 1.75 cumulative GPA, at least a 1.5 GPA
in the third quarter, and completion of the community service requirement.
Due to the independent nature of the Senior Project, proposals that include a single supervisor for more than two
Liggett seniors will be denied. Projects involving more than one senior at a single location may also be denied.
Senior projects allow students to encounter new environments and situations; therefore, a senior’s project may not
involve supervision by a family member, or work in their parent’s business.
The Senior Project will be evaluated during the four-week period by the Director of College Guidance and the
project supervisor. Any violation of the project expectations may result in the termination of the project, the return
to school, and the failure noted on the final transcript.
Both students and supervisors are required to make a final written evaluation of the project at the conclusion of the
four-week period. Supervisors will be sent evaluations directly from the College Guidance Office.
Please note that each senior is responsible for submitting the proposal form, including supervisor response forms,
by the appointed date. In light of this, the search for an appropriate senior project and supervisor should be taken
seriously and researched with diligence.
All proposals will be reviewed according to the extent that they satisfy the spirit of these expectations. Proposals
may be denied if they do not meet the philosophical intent of the Senior Project or are contrary to the stated values
of the school.
Specific Description of Proposal
We have found that the most successful projects are those in which the student is able to have a personal interview with
the supervisor who will be directly responsible for him/her during the project. An interview allows them to discuss the
student's goals, proposal, and responsibilities, as well as the supervisor's expectations.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Student's Proposal (PLEASE WORD PROCESS):
(Include intent, goals, expectations, relevance to personal interest, and/or future career interest, if
applicable. May be completed on a separate sheet; please attach. 250 words)
Supervisor Response to Proposal:
(Please comment briefly on the proposal. Is it reasonable, appropriate and useful Include any
comments or suggestions that may inform the student’s expectations. May be completed on a
separate sheet; please attach.) Should you need any further information about the Senior Project
program before you feel able to make a commitment to our student, please contact Elizabeth Jamett,
Director of College Guidance, 313-884-4444 x305.
Duties
List the specific duties and responsibilities that the senior will assume. It is presumed that all duties will not
be completed on all days. We ask only for a general reflection of what types of work the senior will
complete.
