Head Coach

Tom

Melville

Entering his 12th season in charge of the Mercer

men’s soccer program, Melville has built the program

into a perennial contender in the Atlantic Sun

Conference. On Oct. 6, 2005, head coach Tom Melville

recorded his 98th win since taking the reigns at Mercer.

With this career mark, Melville passed Dana Robinson to

become the Bears’ all-time winningest coach.

Since his arrival in 1995, the Bears have qualified

for postseason play eight times. During Melville’s

tenure, Mercer has averaged nine wins per season and has

accumulated more overall wins than any other team in

the A-Sun since 1998. Melville currently owns the title as dean of

Atlantic Sun soccer coaches and has more conference victories (42) than

any other active coach in the A-Sun. The Bears were regular season conference

champions in 2000, 2001 and 2002. They also captured the conference

tournament championship following the 1999 and 2001 seasons.

Since taking over the Mercer program nearly 12 years ago, Melville

has produced 17 first and second team all-conference award winners,

eight all-freshman team selections and 16 all-tournament team members.

He has also guided Max Rooke (2001) and Ramiro Canovas (2002) to

being named A-Sun Player of the Year as well as Vicente Arze’s conference

Freshman of the Year award in 2004. Melville's players also enjoy

success in the classroom. During the 2005-06 school year, men's soccer

had 14 players on the academic all-conference team.

Now in his 20th season as a collegiate head coach, Melville has a

career record of 172-159-27. He took the Bears to an NCAA play-in

game in 1999 versus Rhode Island and advanced to the NCAA

Tournament in 2001 with a first

round match-up against Kentucky.

He has garnered Atlantic Sun

Coach of the Year honors twice, in

1999 and 2002, and was named

South Atlantic Conference Coach

of the Year in 1992.

Prior to joining Mercer,

Melville was the head coach at

Lenoir-Rhyne College where he

compiled a career record of 74-57-

15. His teams averaged nine wins

per season during his stint as the

head man in Hickory, N.C.

Melville also helped guide LRC to

its first ever NAIA playoff berth

and is still the all-time winningest

coach in school history.

Tom Melville became Mercer men’s

soccer’s all-time winningest coach

with a 2-1 victory over Gardner-Webb
