THE <strong>CFC</strong> AND THE AFFORDABLE HEALTH CARE ACT<br />
Why <strong>the</strong> community needs <strong>the</strong> <strong>Clinic</strong> more than ever<br />
Perhaps you are wondering whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>re<br />
will be a need for The <strong>Clearwater</strong> <strong>Free</strong> <strong>Clinic</strong><br />
following <strong>the</strong> implementation of <strong>the</strong> Affordable<br />
Care Act starting in <strong>2014</strong>. The answer is<br />
undeniably “Yes!” The Congressional Budget<br />
Office’s latest estimate is that 30 million people<br />
in our country – 1 in 10 Americans – will remain<br />
uninsured following <strong>the</strong> full implementation of<br />
<strong>the</strong> Act. This includes significant numbers of<br />
Pinellas County families who are our neighbors,<br />
friends, and relatives, and those whose work<br />
we depend on to support our local economy.<br />
While we are continuing to monitor state and<br />
federal efforts around health care reform, we<br />
are convinced that nonprofit, volunteer-driven,<br />
community-based efforts such as ours must<br />
remain strong, vibrant, and sustainable for<br />
years to come. Thank you for your continued<br />

“THE <strong>CFC</strong> SAVES LIVES”<br />
A patient story of how <strong>the</strong> <strong>Clinic</strong> helped him<br />
to be cancer free<br />
Marty had a full time job as a painter<br />
and press operator. He was provided<br />
health insurance through his work<br />
and life was good. Then Marty<br />
became increasingly tired and weak…<br />
so much so that he was unable to<br />
function at work and ultimately lost<br />
his job and insurance with it. Marty<br />
knew he needed to see a doctor but<br />
without insurance or <strong>the</strong> funds to pay<br />
privately he did not know what to do<br />
or where to go. A friend of Marty’s<br />
recommended <strong>the</strong> <strong>Clearwater</strong> <strong>Free</strong> <strong>Clinic</strong>. Marty became a <strong>CFC</strong> patient<br />
and was seen by <strong>the</strong> <strong>Clinic</strong>’s nurse practitioner, Jan Humphreys who<br />
ultimately made <strong>the</strong> diagnosis of Lymphoma…a cancer of <strong>the</strong> lymphatic<br />
system. “Jan really went above and beyond to check up on me. She<br />
would call me after hours to make sure I was doing okay.”<br />

Through <strong>the</strong> <strong>Clinic</strong>’s community partnerships and services, Marty’s<br />
lymphoma was successfully treated and today he is cancer free. Marty<br />
will continue to require ongoing monthly surveillance, at least for a<br />
while, just to make sure he remains cancer free. “The <strong>Clearwater</strong> <strong>Free</strong><br />
<strong>Clinic</strong> saves lives. They saved my life. If it wasn’t for <strong>the</strong>m helping me<br />
out and Jan going above and beyond I wouldn’t be here.” Whenever<br />
Marty comes to <strong>the</strong> <strong>CFC</strong> for an appointment, he brings flowers to <strong>the</strong><br />
volunteers and staff, just to show <strong>the</strong>m how much <strong>the</strong>ir help means to<br />
him. “The quality of care I receive is better than I have ever had before.<br />
You can tell <strong>the</strong> volunteers and staff really love what <strong>the</strong>y do because<br />
<strong>the</strong>y go out of <strong>the</strong>ir way to follow up with <strong>the</strong>ir patients.”<br />
Marty’s story and his deep appreciation for <strong>the</strong> <strong>Clearwater</strong> <strong>Free</strong><br />
<strong>Clinic</strong>, volunteers and staff is similar to so many o<strong>the</strong>rs families in our<br />
community. The <strong>CFC</strong>’s mission to deliver comprehensive medical care<br />
to uninsured families through volunteerism and community partnerships<br />
works to keep our communities strong… and it works to help those<br />
who need it most.<br />

LETTER FROM PRESIDENT<br />
Thank you for your interest in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Clearwater</strong> <strong>Free</strong> <strong>Clinic</strong>! We could<br />
not accomplish our mission without <strong>the</strong> strong support of our<br />
volunteers and community partners.<br />
There are a lot of exciting things taking place at your “<strong>Clinic</strong>”. Most<br />
recently, we dedicated <strong>the</strong> annex to honor <strong>the</strong> memory of Valerie Nisk.<br />
The Nisk family continues to amaze us all with <strong>the</strong>ir continued support<br />
spanning some 30 years! We are proud to finally have <strong>the</strong> opportunity<br />
to formalize that memory.<br />
On May 1st we transitioned to a new leadership team. We are very<br />
excited to have Dottie Fischer serving as our Treasurer and Cyndi Heller<br />
as our Secretary. I am also very proud to serve <strong>the</strong> clinic as your new<br />
President. We look forward to <strong>the</strong> contributions of <strong>the</strong> new team as<br />
well as a very strong Board of Directors and dedicated staff.<br />
Speaking of <strong>the</strong> Board of Directors, we have recently worked with<br />
Mr. Mark Cruise, an outside consultant to put toge<strong>the</strong>r our Strategic<br />
Plan for <strong>the</strong> next two years. The Board has worked very diligently to<br />
prioritize objectives and goals to move <strong>the</strong> <strong>Clinic</strong> forward in <strong>the</strong> near<br />
and long-term.<br />
Many have asked, “How does <strong>the</strong> Affordable Healthcare Act affect <strong>the</strong> <strong>Clearwater</strong> <strong>Free</strong> <strong>Clinic</strong>” Without going<br />
on and on, we feel <strong>the</strong> patient load of <strong>the</strong> clinic will be unaffected by <strong>the</strong> implementation of “Obamacare”. We<br />
feel <strong>the</strong>re are many gaps in coverage parameters, and eligibility issues that will leave a significant segment of<br />
<strong>the</strong> population without affordable healthcare options. In addition, many statistics indicate <strong>the</strong>re will also be a<br />
large number of employers that will “opt out”<br />
of compliance with <strong>the</strong> act, and many eligible<br />
employees that will not conform or participate in<br />
<strong>the</strong> program.<br />
The bottom line we feel is demand for our services<br />
will continue to be strong and our role in <strong>the</strong><br />
community will continue to be greatly needed!<br />
We hope to report on some new programs<br />
and new directions in <strong>the</strong> very near future. It<br />
is a very exciting time at <strong>the</strong> <strong>Clearwater</strong> <strong>Free</strong><br />
<strong>Clinic</strong>. Please continue to support our efforts<br />
by volunteering and financially supporting a<br />
clinic that has served <strong>the</strong> uninsured with quality<br />
compassionate healthcare since 1977. If you<br />

PRINCE OF PEACE LUTHERAN CHURCH<br />
GIVES THE <strong>CFC</strong> A FRESH FACE<br />
The <strong>Clearwater</strong> <strong>Free</strong> <strong>Clinic</strong> would like to extend a very special thank<br />
you to <strong>the</strong> members of <strong>the</strong> Prince of Peace Lu<strong>the</strong>ran Church that<br />
lent a hand to help “Clean up <strong>the</strong> <strong>Clinic</strong>.” They did an amazing job<br />
helping pull weeds, re-mulch and scour <strong>the</strong> inside of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Clinic</strong>.<br />
Through acts of kindness like<br />
<strong>the</strong>irs, <strong>the</strong> <strong>CFC</strong> is able to have a<br />
beautiful facility and make sure<br />
that donations go directly to<br />
services for uninsured families.<br />
THE <strong>CFC</strong>’S NEWEST BOARD MEMBER<br />
RYAN BONTRAGER, CPA<br />
The <strong>Clearwater</strong> <strong>Free</strong> <strong>Clinic</strong>’s board of<br />
directors recently welcomed Ryan Bontrager<br />
as <strong>the</strong>ir newest member. Ryan is a CPA<br />
with Warren Averett in Tampa, specializing<br />
in financial statements and audits. Ryan’s<br />
first contact with <strong>the</strong> <strong>Clearwater</strong> <strong>Free</strong> <strong>Clinic</strong><br />
occurred several years ago while working<br />
for Lewis Birch & Ricardo, CPA. Ryan was<br />
assigned to work on <strong>Clinic</strong>’s yearly audit.<br />
“I was able to see firsthand <strong>the</strong> level of care that was being<br />
provided to <strong>Clinic</strong> patients through strong community<br />
partnerships. I really like <strong>the</strong> volunteers and staff and think<br />

VALERIE NISK ANNEX<br />
GRAND OPENING CEREMONY<br />
On Thursday, May 9, 2013 <strong>the</strong> <strong>Clearwater</strong> <strong>Free</strong> <strong>Clinic</strong><br />
formally opened and dedicated <strong>the</strong> <strong>Clearwater</strong> <strong>Free</strong> <strong>Clinic</strong>’s<br />
Valerie Nisk Annex. The Annex is located at 705 N. Ft.<br />
Harrison Ave. and became part of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Clearwater</strong> <strong>Free</strong> <strong>Clinic</strong><br />
campus in December 2010 through a generous gift donated<br />
by Ronald & Alice Nisk, in loving memory of <strong>the</strong>ir daughter<br />
Valerie. The <strong>CFC</strong> board members, staff, and various city<br />
officials ga<strong>the</strong>red toge<strong>the</strong>r for a ribbon cutting and short<br />
presentation. <strong>CFC</strong> President, Bruce Livingston and <strong>CFC</strong><br />
board member, Stephen Bouton recognized and thanked<br />
<strong>the</strong> entire Nisk Family for <strong>the</strong>ir continued commitment<br />
to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Clearwater</strong> <strong>Free</strong> <strong>Clinic</strong> and <strong>the</strong> underserved in our<br />
communities.<br />
The Valerie Nisk Annex is a multipurpose facility that serves<br />
as an extension of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Clearwater</strong> <strong>Free</strong> <strong>Clinic</strong>, enhancing care<br />
and services provided to <strong>Clinic</strong> patients. New prospective<br />
clinic patients are qualified and introduced to clinic services<br />
at <strong>the</strong> Annex, which also provides office space and meeting<br />
rooms for patient education classes, and wellness programs,<br />
as well as an area for volunteer training and development.<br />
<strong>CFC</strong> SUMMER PEDIATRIC PROGRAM<br />
Through <strong>the</strong> summer months, school, camp and sports<br />
physicals will only be provided during <strong>the</strong> regular Pediatric <strong>Clinic</strong><br />
on Wednesday mornings from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Pediatric<br />
sick visits will continue to be scheduled as needed throughout<br />
<strong>the</strong> week.<br />
