Happy birthday
to BCEMS!
Congratulations are in order
for the Berry College
Elementary and Middle School
(BCEMS), which is celebrating
its 30th anniversary during the 2007-08 academic year.
If your life was enriched through involvement with BCEMS at any
point during the last three decades, you are invited to be a part of several
planned celebrations throughout the year. Pictures and other items are
being solicited for a room-sized historic timeline, and opportunities to
share stories and meet with past friends, faculty and staff are in the works.
For more information, go to www.berry.edu/elementary and click
Change in
classification
After many years of being
classified as a regional
comprehensive college in U.S.
News & World Report’s annual
“America’s Best Colleges”
listings, Berry was included this
year in the national liberal arts
category due to a change in the
basic classification system used
by the Carnegie Commission on
Higher Education.
Out of the 266 schools in this
national category, Berry ranked
118 and was included on the list
of 125 top-tier schools. The
remaining 141 colleges and
universities in this category were
sorted into two additional tiers.
President Stephen R. Briggs
said the college was pleased to be
included in a category that
speaks to Berry’s aspirations and
reputation. He also emphasized
that he concurs with presidents
from other nationally-ranked
colleges that these rankings often
obscure what is most important
about individual institutions.
Dr. Briggs’ message to the
campus community about the
U.S. News rankings is available
A ‘Common
Application’ for
uncommon schools
Berry College recently took
its place alongside Yale,
Princeton, Stanford and other
elite institutions as part of the
Common Application, a not-forprofit
organization that provides
a single admission application –
in print and online at
www.commonapp.org – that
prospective students may submit
to any number of approximately
300 member institutions
nationwide.
Acceptance in this elite group
is limited to colleges and
universities that evaluate
prospective students using a
holistic selection process.
Membership results in wider
visibility for the institution and
added convenience for
prospective students.
Provost turns
professor
Dr. Thomas E. Dasher, who
joined Berry College as
provost in 2000 and is credited
with championing academic
excellence
and active
mentoring of
students by
faculty and
staff, has
ALAN STOREY
stepped
down from
his administrative role and now
is serving as professor of English,
rhetoric and writing.
“During Tom Dasher’s tenure
as provost, Berry made
significant progress in the
development of its core academic
programs and policies,” said
President Stephen R. Briggs
when the change was
announced.
During Dr. Dasher’s tenure,
national recognition for the
faculty increased in the form of
publications, awards, research
grants and juried invitations. He
also supported a number of key
initiatives, including the
reorganization of the Office of
Student Work and Experiential
Learning and the establishment
of the Center for Teaching
Excellence.
“Tom Dasher also is a
champion of Berry’s mission,” Dr.
Briggs added. “He is passionate
regarding an integrated education
of the head, heart and hands,
and he has carried out his
responsibilities with that ideal in
mind. I am grateful to him for his
dedication, courage and his
assistance during this year of
transition.”
A national search is in
progress. Dr. Kathy McKee is
serving in the interim.
Planned giving
program wins
national award
Berry College’s planned
giving program has been
recognized on the national
level by the Council for
Advancement and Support of
Education for its outstanding
growth and achievement. The
program earned a silver
medal in the 2007 Circle of
Excellence Awards.
Leading the charge to
encourage alumni and friends
to “Leave a Legacy” through
membership in the Berry
Heritage Society were Scott
Breithaupt (91C, 96G), senior
planned giving officer; Dr.
Gary Waters (80C, 89G), chief
of staff in the President’s
Office; Dana Herron, director
of operations and research;
Debbie Rasure, advancement
communication officer; and
the six alumni who make up
the Planned Giving Council:
Chairman Roger W. Lusby III
(79C), Glen Barber (91C), Dan
Owens (78C, 80G), W. Bradley
Roberts (95C, 03G), Anita
Tancraitor (86C) and Michael
Thompson (87C).
“Remembering Berry in a
will or other planned-giving
instrument is one of the best
ways to assure Berry’s quality
and accessibility for future
generations,” Scott stated. “It
is an opportunity to leave a
legacy that is available to just
about everyone.”
