My commentary last August 

on creativity prompted this 

comment from a reader in 

San Diego: 

“Beach volleyball games for the 

Rand scientists in Santa Monica 

are locally famous for getting the 

creative juices flowing. I’ve been 

wondering if some such activity 

could be used in lighting design.” 

As I look out my window on a subfreezing 

day in New York City, I can 

honestly say that anything resembling 

beach volleyball at IESNA is out 

of the question. But maybe a Polar 

Bear Club on the banks of the East 

River is just what we need to tap our 

unconscious. Better that than hugging 

trees in Central Park! 

Another reader responded to my 

January commentary on the superficiality 

of many PowerPoint presentations. 

“Thought you’d enjoy the 

article ‘Killing Me Microsoftly’ from 

the January 5th issue of the Chicago 

Tribune magazine,” the reader 

wrote. In the article, Julia Keller, 

the Tribune’s cultural critic, writes, 

“Almost nobody speaks in public 

anymore without using PowerPoint. 

But some liken the program to a 

cognitive Veg-O-Matic that slices 

and dices human thought.” 

Ms. Keller offers a tongue-incheek 

version of poet Robert 

Frost’s “Stopping by the Woods on 

a Snowy Evening” as it might be 

presented in PowerPoint. Among 

her bulleted items for project goals: 

• To watch woods fill up with 

snow 

• To do so without being 

observed 

• To steal some time from other 

projects 

• To stay mindful of other projects, 

however 

I decided to try my hand at turning 

a tribute to Richard Kelly by Philip 

Johnson into a PowerPoint presentation. 

Here’s Johnson’s original: 

“Richard was a teacher. He was 

my guru—the man who taught me 

the importance of lighting. When I 

first moved into the glass house, 

there was no light other than the 

sun. You can imagine the problem 

with reflections. If you had one bulb, 

you saw six. When it got dark outside, 

there wasn’t anything a lighting 

man could do, or so I thought. 

Richard founded the art of residential 

lighting when he designed the 

lighting for the glass house. He realized 

there was no place to put the 

lights but the floor, and someday 

we’ll have an IES meeting there and 

you’ll see how it works. It was a little 

on the expensive side, but I don’t 

think that ever stopped Richard. 

That’s why he’d have someone like 

Der Scutt looking over him today, 

controlling the shekels.”

Ballots have been distributed to 

eligible voting members of the 

Society. All you have to do now is

But the process doesn’t end 

there. The 2003 Board of Nomination 

will soon be soliciting members 

to consider service on the 

IESNA Board. The following positions 

will be available for the 2004 

election: Senior Vice President (to 

serve as President, 2005-2006); 

Vice President-Design and Application; 

Vice President-Member 

Activities; Treasurer; and Director 

(2 seats available). Both Martyn

meets in early December, is composed

each Forum of the Society (five 

members, each one representing 

Design and Application, Technical 

and Research, Member Activities, 

Educational Activities and General 

Committees), and a representative 

from each of the nine Regions 

of the Society. 

I must stress that the process 

of candidate selection is open, fair 

and honest. There are no “back 

room” politics. You owe it to yourself—and 

to the Society—to get 

involved. 

LIGHTFAIR 

Most of you are aware that, 

beginning with the May 2003 show 

in New York, LIGHTFAIR International 

will be held every other year 

in New York. In even years, LIGHT- 

FAIR will be held in Las Vegas. 

Contracts have been signed with 

hotels through the 2007 show 

(New York) and commitments have 

been made to convention centers. 

Chuck’s Retirement 

By the time you read this, Chuck 

Beardsley will have retired. While 

Chuck’s tenure (this time around) 

was relatively short, I do appreciate 

his professionalism and his efforts 

to improve LD+A.

Red For Green 

Iwould like to offer comment on 

Willard Warren’s “Energy Concerns” 

column in the January 2003 

issue of LD+A. 

First, I would like to commend 

the author on a well-written article 

with some good suggestions on 

improving energy efficiency and 

also in general maintainability. The 

comment I would like to make is 

that I don’t think the “single-ball” 

traffic light is a good idea due to the 

high percentage of the population 

that suffers from color blindness in 

some form. Many of these people 

can only tell what color the traffic 

lights are by which position is illuminated. 

If we combine all three colors 

to one position, those who are 

color blind will be unable to distinguish 

in particular between the red 

and the green. As I understand it, 

the yellow/amber color is not generally 

a problem. I am not color blind 

myself, but know several people 

who are. Thanks for the opportunity 

to comment on this article, and 

keep up the good work.

Green For Red 

Ijust finished reading the Energy 

Concerns column in the January 

2003 LD+A. While I agree with Mr. 

Warren’s perception and needs of 

the future, I have a problem with his 

first wish, that being a “single, 

large, circular LED traffic light with 

control to change the color from 

green to yellow to red, ad infinitum.” 

I have designed traffic signals for 

over 30 years, been a member of 

IESNA for about half that time and 

have seen many products come and 

go, one being a traffic signal head 

that displayed either a green arrow 

or yellow arrow from the same face. 

It was mechanical and subject to 

failure for that reason alone; however, 

the public wasn’t sure what was 

being displayed and if either color 

was out, the typical driver didn’t 

know what to do, as the position of 

the lighted area didn’t change. 

The idea of a “single, large, circular” 

light be it LED, incandescent 

LD+A readers 

had to 

bring me back 

to reality by telling 

me about 

the real world 

or fiber optic, is faulty for the same 

reason as the mechanical unit if a 

color/section is not working, that 

being position of the lighted area. 

A further concern involves persons 

with ‘color blindness’ such 

that they cannot see the color of an 

LED traffic signal indication no matter 

which color is being displayed. 

With current traffic signal heads 

having the red by standard conformity 

on the top or far left, you know 

when to stop by the position of the 

lighted area whether or not you can 

see red, yellow or green. You recognize 

the other ‘colors’ by their position 

as well. In these days of power 

conservation and the increasing 

usage of LED traffic signal lamps, 

we need to have the color or position 

of the lighted area as readily 

determined as possible. Complicating 

the issue, LED heads have a 

smaller cone of visibility than incandescent 

types causing problems 

with horizontal and vertical roadway 

curve approaches to signalized 

intersections. What about signals in 

flashing operation In California we 

only flash all red, never red one way 

and yellow the other. A single faced 

head in flash mode would be impossible 

to obey, especially for those 

used to red/yellow flash. 

I hope there’s an alternative. 

Perhaps the next ‘pet rock’ or ‘hula 

hoop’ will be a new, innovative way 

to control vehicular and pedestrian 

traffic.

Gentlemen, just when I was 

thrilled with an article in the NY 

Times describing a new plastic 

“organic” LED that changes color 

from red to green just by changing 

the direction of current flow 

and thinking that this was the 

breakthrough I was hoping for, 

LD+A readers had to bring me 

back to reality by telling me about 

the real world. 

I remember that many years 

ago, Alex Lurkis, the chief engineer 

of the NY Bureau of Electrical 

Control had gotten a patent 

on a single source traffic light 

that changed color by moving 

three different colored filters in 

front of the source. He must have 

been thrilled when the chief engineer 

of the NYC Traffic Bureau 

gave him the same dose of reality 

you just administered to me. 

I hope there is some other practical 

application for this ingenious 

device besides using it for pixels 

on a TV screen with the addition 

of a blue color. That seems to be 

too mundane a solution for an 

innovative product that we IESNA 

members could really have fun 

with. Thanks again to all. 


In the late 1980s, electric utilities 

offered rebates to support a program 

called Demand Side Management 

(DSM), designed to shave 

peak demand for electric power and 

“buy back” some spare capacity. 

This allowed the utilities to supply 

their customers’ increased demand 

for electricity without expanding

generating plants and raising rates. 

The utilities were compensated by 

state regulators who allowed them 

a higher rate of return, but most 

DSM programs ended with the 

onset of utility deregulation and the 

forced sale of the utility owned and 

operated generating plants to independent 

generators. This made utility 

rebate programs harder to find, 

but return on investment opportunities 

still exist today by employing 

lighting energy conservation measures. 

Energy Serving Companies 

(ESCOs) had a banner year in 2002, 

and many of the ESCOs sub out the 

lighting energy conservation contracts 

to people like Stan Walerczyk, 

who now writes a column for 

LD+A, giving advice to our readers 

on which energy saving measures 

to use for fastest return on investment. 

In the old DSM days the best 

retrofit candidate was a four-lamp, 

T-12, 2x4 troffer which was retrofitted 

into a two or three T8 lamp unit 

with an electronic ballast, and probably 

a new specular reflector, and 

shielding lens or louver. Stan has 

been pointing out in his column that 

he finds equal energy savings today 

retrofitting those original T-8 electronic 

luminaires with premium T-8 

lamps and low power electronic ballasts. 

He gives some advice on how 

to save at least 20 percent, or more 

in energy, with good returns on 

investment, even without utility 

rebates. 

In the high-rise residential field, I 

find a good candidate for energy 

saving involves replacing the ubiquitous 

T9 circline lamp. For many 

years those lamps were used in 

luminaires by interior designers and 

building owners because of their 

round shape and the low initial 

cost. The single circline lamps use 

magnetic ballasts with a ballast 

factor less than .80, which means 

that the lamp is underdriven with 

lower lamp current to keep it from 

overheating the ballast, which is 

generally encircled by the lamp. The 

luminaires with two concentric 

lamps, 22/32-W or 32/40-W, were 

underdriven even more than the single 

lamp units, with ballast factors 

around .60, because of the increased 

heat load on the ballast 

from both lamps. The luminous efficacy 

(lumens per watt) of the lamps 

is low to begin with, and there is 

lowered lamp output caused by the

ballast heat and the mutual heating 

effect of one lamp on the other, so 

when the lamps are underdriven by 

the ballast, the light output is even 

further reduced, but the good news 

and the bad news is that lamp life 

is extended. 

I’ve found circline lamps that 

were still burning after being on 

continuously for a period of six 

years. But the light output for most 

of the lamp’s lifetime is severely 

reduced, yet it is still consuming 

the same wattage as when new, 

and maintenance men only replace 

the lamps when they finally burn 

out. One of my ESCO friends told 

me of an installation in which, after 

many years of continuous, unbroken, 

electric service, a power failure 

occured. When the power was 

restored, a large number of the circline 

lamps in the corridors would 

not restart because the emissive 

coating on the cathode filament 

had burned off and there wasn’t 

enough left to strike an arc. 

I’m working on a project now 

where we’re retrofiting an old, 

round, surface mounted 32/40-W 

T9 twin circline lamp luminaire, 

with a new, single 40-W T-5 circline 

lamp, an electronic ballast and a 

new reflector. The new lamp and 

ballast draw only 38 watts, about 

half of what the existing unit draws, 

but the new electronic ballast factor 

is .90, and the maintained lamp 

lumen output is greater than that of 

the existing twin unit. For esthetic 

reasons the client wants to retain 

the appearance of the existing soft 

looking round luminaire with its 

white diffuser. The payback period 

will be around two years, a 50 percent 

return on investment. 

With smaller round circline lamp 

units, I’ve been replacing existing 

ones with luminaires containing 

one or two 13-W CFLs. Wherever I 

can, I use twin 13-W CFL lamps 

and bi-level switching. One lamp is 

on continuously, while the second 

lamp is triggered on when someone 

is detected in the space by an 

occupancy sensor. That occupancy 

sensor is either mounted within 

the luminaire or separately on the 

ceiling, in which case there must 

be a separate wire run to the second 

ballast in each unit. Bi-level 

means there is always code minimum 

levels of light maintained in 

the space when it is unoccupied, 

and a higher level provided when 

people are present. 

In New York Sate, there is a 

rebate from NYSERDA, the NY 

State Energy Research and Development 

Authority, for the use of bilevel 

lighting, and in California it is 

proposed that the new revision of 

their energy code, the most restrictive 

in the nation, will establish 

energy credits for the use of bi-level 

lighting against the allowable lighting 

power densities (LPDs).

bring good architecture and interiors

The quote has inspired me to work 

to involve practitioners of the other 

disciplines of the construction process: 

architects, interior designers, 

engineers, contractors, facility managers, 

facility engineers, electrical 

inspectors, code officials, manufacturers, 

manufacturers’ representatives, 

and anyone else who will stop 

for two minutes and listen to me. 

When I tell them about the IESNA, 

the first obstacle to overcome is the 

term “illuminating engineering,” to 

get past that glazed expression as 

visions of pocket protectors invade 

their perspective. Yes, this is a technical 

organization, one whose focus 

is the art and science of lighting, 

whose mission is “to advance 

knowledge and disseminate information 

for the improvement of the 

lighted environment.” 

The IESNA is a valuable resource 

from which to learn of the latest 

advances in the use and control of 

interior and exterior illumination. 

Encourage your colleagues to join 

the Society, and take advantage of 

all the benefits available at the 

Section and Society level. Members 

can attend a local Section meeting 

to learn in an unbiased presentation 

about the latest technology in lighting, 

or tour a local design to learn 

new techniques of implementing a 

different source of illumination. 

Local Section meetings are a valuable 

opportunity to network. 

Local Section officers work hard 

to develop events for the member to 

attend, and always welcome your 

suggestions. 

Attend the IESNA Annual Conference 

in Chicago, IL August 4-7 and 

the seminars about design, technology, 

and construction. You can also 

attend the paper sessions, and the 

enlightening Progress Report. 

Take advantage of the reduced 

member price of the publications. 

There are several newly revised 

Recommended Practices, and other 

new or revised publications scheduled 

for 2003. 

I realize the membership dues 

may be daunting to the beginning 

designer, I remember the hurdle it 

was to make that first dues payment, 

but the savings were worth it. 

I’ll wind this up with a bit of history; 

at a recent Old Timer’s Meeting 

of the Capital Section we enjoyed 

the oral history of lighting from the 

sales and design perspectives. 

Some were surprised to learn from 

Dinny Dinsmore that membership in 

the IESNA was expected of anyone 

employed in the industry, and that 

expectation was unquestioned.

Last month’s column dealt 

exclusively with average adaptation 

(10 cd/m 2 ) and average 

reflectance (0.32). They are the 

most prevalent. Other adaptations 

and reflectances are defined by 

their sensitivities. A brief summary 

of their properties follows. 

Adaptation—0.001 cd/m 2 — 

Rod Vision. Deane Judd introduced 

this adaptation as night vision. 

“Rods are responsible for our ability 

to see by moonlight, starlight, or 

even when the stars are obscured 

by clouds.”—Deane B. Judd, Color 

in Business, Science and Industry 

John Wiley & Sons, New York 1975. 

We are faced with the complexities 

of thresholds since not all frequencies 

become visible at the 

same intensity. A further problem 

arises from the limits set for scotopic, 

mesopic, and photopic adaptations, 

which differ extensively 

among authorities. The only consistent 

number, 0.001 cd/m 2 , is the 

transition point from rods, only, to 

the first action of cones, at which 

point the Purkinje phenomenon 

occurs. Judd describes the change: 

“The Purkinje shift makes an 

object that looks red by day appear 

black by starlight, whereas a daytime 

blue object appears light gray.” 

Low scotopic luminances, found 

in the region outside the galaxy, are 

in the neighborhood of 

0.00000005, the calculated 

absolute threshold being 

0.00000002 cd/m 2 . Another low 

value is an overcast horizon with no 

moonlight, 0.00003 cd/m 2 . Visual 

sensitivity is limited to brightness 

alone. 

Added complications arise when 

the foveal and peripheral adaptions 

occur simultaneously. The concepts 

of dual adaptations were presented 

by Ian Lewin in the March 1999 

issue of this magazine in the article 

“Road Scholar”: 

“When we look directly at an 

object we are using our cone receptors... 

The rods are responsible for 

human vision at low light levels and 

are prevalent in the peripheral field 

of view, away from the line of sight... 

During practical driving at night. 

both receptor types are active. 

Objects viewed directly by the eye 

are seen by the cones. Off-axis 

objects are seen primarily by rods.” 

(Peripheral rods at the outer retina 

are extra-sensitive to motion.) 

Colors of the stars seen at this 

adaptation must be attributed to 

cone vision even though the adaptation 

implies rod vision alone 

Lighting designers are rarely 

charged with providing illumination 

at this level, but they must understand 

the challenge to those who 

work under these conditions. These 

include airline pilots who must read 

instruments while traveling through 

very dark surrounds, and ships’ captains 

who must navigate in almost 

total darkness. To be prepared for 

these conditions, lighting designers 

must be familiar with all levels of 

adaptation. 

0.01 cd/m 2 -Moonlight. Illuminance 

from the full moon is about 0.2 

lux. Reflectance from water and 

foliage is about 0.16. Since luminance 

equals illuminance times 

reflectance divided by pi, the resulting 

luminance is 0.01 cd/m 2 . Ralph 

Evans observed, “Even at levels as 

low as the light from the full moon, 

detail vision is moderately good.” 

Whereas the previous adaptation 

(0.001 cd/m 2 ) had the single variable

separated from their backgrounds 

as differences in Value, but remain 

colorless. Moonlight also adds acuity 

of large letters at the closer 

viewing distance (30 cm). One can 

usually make out newspaper headlines. 

In LD+A issues from February to 

September of 1992, I recounted my 

personal observations at 3 meters 

and at 30 centimeters—the latter 

being the closer viewing distance. 

Visual acuity, the ability to distinguish 

fine detail, is the reciprocal of 

the minimum angular size in minutes 

of arc. The smallest discernable 

separation between two lines 

is one minute of arc. This angle has 

a tangent 1/60 of a degree = 

0.00029 = 1/3438, a height of one 

at a distance of 3438 in any measure. 

Size, shape and position are 


introduced at this adaptation. 

Acuities are very sensitive to the 

distance of viewing. 

We gradually come to recognize 

that visual sensitivities multiply 

and divide as Adaptations rise to 

higher levels. More of our visual 

sensitivities evolve as the adaptation 

rises and each sensitivity 

exhibits more discernible parts. 

Locations in space (space perception) 

are difficult to find with certainty 

in moonlight. But of greatest 

importance is the fact that our 

curiosity is aroused when the surround 

is half seen. We look for perceptive 

meaning. 

0.10 cd/m 2 —Sunrise (minus 

45 minutes) or First Light of Day- 

Early morning light, initiated by the 

sun 6 degrees below the horizon 

provides an illuminance of 2 lux on 

the horizontal surfaces that reflect 

0.16. Therefore, the luminance is 2 

times 0.16 divided by pi, or 0.10 

cd/m 2 . 

Light characteristics are the 

same at the end of civil twilight 

when the sun is at the same position. 

These are the magical 

moments when motorists turn on 

headlights as color fades, and when 

colors suddenly appear in the morning. 

The change from colorless to 

color or the reverse is the most dramatic 

change occurring with different 

adaptations. 

James Southall noted, “Ever 

since Newton’s discovery and 

explanation of the phenomenon of 

the dispersion of light, the incidental 

connection between color and 

refrangibility, or wavelength, two 

entirely separate affairs, one mental 

and the other physical, has been 

a source of much confusion of 

phraseology.” 

To the engineer, colors are wavelengths 

(or combinations thereof) 

at varying brightnesses. To the 

artist (using Munsell terms) they 

are described as Hues, Values, and 

Chromas. 

Faber Birren decided, “Color, in a 

word, is thus an interpretation of 

eye and mind, an inner reaction that 

has little to do with physics or 

chemistry.” 

He saw color in ways that expand 

its subtleties almost without limit. 

“A given color, such as red, may 

have a large number of different 

appearances:

like a patch of crimson sky at 

sunset. 

—It may have volume to it like a 

glass of red wine. 

—It may be transparent like a 

piece of cellophane 

—It may be luminous like a stoplight 

or a lantern. 

—It may be dull like a piece of 

suede. 

—It may be lustrous like a piece 

of silk. 

—It may be metallic like a 

Christmas tree ornament. 

—It may be iridescent like the 

gleam of an opal.” 

We have not yet touched upon 

color’s ability to create an emotional 

response to its use in a scene. 

David Katz wrote, “The way in 

which we see the color of a surface 

is in a large measure independent of 

the intensity and wavelength of the 

light it reflects.”

colorful experiences which then carry on for the rest of 

the sunlit day. 

1 cd/m 2 —Sunrise (minus 30 minutes). The sun has 

risen to four degrees below the horizon, and the horizontal 

illuminance is 13 lux. As the adaptation rises, the 

low reflectance of the earth is augmented by sky brightness 

so the luminance is equal to 13 times the 

reflectance divided by pi, and the overall reflectance 

becomes 0.24. 

A careful review of the recommended level of illumination 

for circulation, social conversation, and simple 

tasks (such as reading 12-point type for short periods 

of time) resulted in an adaptation of 1 cd/m 2 . Here we 

come face to face with the superiority of adaptation as 

the basis for lighting design. Adaptation does not yield 

a solitary metric such as illuminance, but instead provides 

a series of measurements that can be fulfilled at 

that particular adaptation level. 

Hardy and Perrin describe the adaptation of 1 cd/m 2 

“as appropriate for interiors at night.” As stated earlier, 

it is also a daytime level. The next adaptations, 10 and 

100 cd/m 2 , occur in both interior and exterior scenes; 

the final, 100 cd/m 2 , is likely to be found in exteriors 

only. 

10 cd/m 2 —Sunrise (minus 15 minutes). With an 

average reflectance of 0.32 the illuminance will be 

approximately 100 lux (10 fc). The eye can usually see 

quite well over the two adaptation levels from 1 to 100 

cd/m 2 . Because of this overlapping of the two adaptations—one 

above and one below—the range of vision at 

the 10 cd/m 2 level is quite extensive and is probably 

the one most commonly found in interior designs. 

As this was described in detail in last month’s issue, 

we will move on to the next adaptation. 

100 cd/m 2 —Sunrise (plus 30 minutes), Bright 

Sunlight. If 1 cd/m 2 is the lowest of interior recommendations, 

100 cd/m 2 is the highest. Both, of course, 

are experienced in the natural scene as well. This level 

should be reserved for the tasks that improve in visibility 

and performance at the higher illumination. Many 

tasks require directional light to create shadows, or 

optical magnification may be the only solution for adequate 

legibility. Sparkle for jewelry is achieved by using 

extremely small directional sources. 

High adaptations may work against the design purpose. 

In viewing oil paintings on my wall, I found close 

examination disturbing. At times, the underlying canvas 

revealed its texture, and individual touches of contrasting 

color appeared strangely out of place, whereas they 

blend for the desired effect at three meters. 

The experience enhanced my appreciation of the 

artist’s ability to place the lights, darks, and colors in a 

manner that conveys realistically the water, sky, and 

the different ships portrayed. Artists can see and reproduce 

patterns of light before them. This is visual communication 

at its finest, an international language that 

needs no translation. 

Visual ability depends on the wise selection of brightness, 

color, and distance, with an innate understanding 

of the psychological factors that the selection will 

evoke. The theater designer strives for strong emotional 

responses; the everyday architectural designer wishes 

to achieve a pleasant productive atmosphere supported 

by clarity and purpose in establishing visual priorities. 

1000 cd/m 2 —Blazing Sunshine. The brightest sunshine 

occurs for only a few hours in the sunniest climates 

and for only a few days of the year. At this level; 

the designer’s problem reverses. He is concerned with 

protecting the viewer from excessive brightness. One 

seeks shade, reaches for the hat with a wide brim, 

wears sunglasses, turns to face away from the direct 

sun, or seeks other means to protect his eyes. Too 

much sun is injurious to man’s most sensitive receiver 

of information from the visual world. 

C.P. Steinmetz warned, “The light which enters the 

eye is converted into heat, and if its power is considerable 

it may be harmful or even destructive, causing 

inflammation or burns.” 

In closing this proposal for a new approach to the 

design of lighting, I would like to pay tribute to C.P. 

Steinmetz, whose book Radiation, Light, and 

Illumination inspired me to undertake my writing 

career; and to Max Planck who firmly rejected the idea 

that there could be an equation between physical and 

mental processes. Too long neglected is the work of 

Albert Munsell and his color system, which assesses 

the perception of black, white, and the grays between. 

And there were my contemporaries: Sol Golden, who 

persuaded the IESNA to publish my Views on the Visual 

Environment. And, Dick Corth, who wrote, “Vision is 

not physics; it is biology,” thus emphasizing the difference 

between light-as-energy and light-for-vision. 

Adaptation-Reflectance is the method I’ve developed. 

Reflectance, the unvarying characteristic of the 

external scene, is the stimulus. Adaptation by the retina 

for human exploration is the response. It minimizes 

calculations, maximizes the mind’s ability to comprehend 

the meanings of the visual scene.

design. This truism applies to any 

architectural opportunity. 

The architectural vision is best 

served if the lighting design is able 

to articulate that vision during the

conceptualization and end stages. 

Lighting brings the architectural 

design to life. Lighting design software 

has now evolved to the point 

where it is an essential tool for anyone 

concerned with designing, 

effective and efficient lighting systems. 

Designing lighting is never an 

easy task, and it usually requires 

the insight of an experienced professional. 

One reason for the complexity 

of the task is the large number 

of variables in each project. 

Visualizing how a variety of lighting 

products will interact within the 

space in the finished design is a 

vital skill. Lighting design and calculation 

software help illustrate 

possible outcomes. Lighting software 

provides the lighting designer 

with a method to confirm his or her 

preliminary design and provides a 

level of confidence in the designed 

lighting levels. 

Unfortunately, lighting calculation 

software has often been difficult 

to learn and slow to work. In 

DOS format, such software was 

known to be time-consuming and 

keystroke-dependent, and becoming 

adept involved a substantial 

learning curve for designers. At 

best, the resulting architectural 

models were good approximations 

of the proposed architectural structures 

and were limited in the ability 

to produce complex objects rooms 

and buildings. 

Many programs had and have significant 

limitations. The lighting 

designer must be savvy in evaluating 

and interpreting results. Mistakes 

can be made easily if the 

designer is not completely fluent in

a program’s functions. All lighting 

software requires an experienced 

lighting designer to evaluate the 

design and the model created in 

that software. This is still true 

today, but programs have evolved to 

make this interpretation easier and 

results more accurate. 

Another issue was the slow calculation 

speeds, which could delay 

efforts to produce quality designs in 

response to the fast pace of today’s 

architectural industry. In the end, 

most lighting designers could not 

afford the cost or the time to learn 

the programs. 

All this has changed over the 

past few years. Lighting analysis 

programs have made advancements 

in flexibility, speed and accuracy. 

Today, the programs are userfriendly 

and deliver a range of new 

features, such as three-dimensional 

color renderings. 

Today’s Windows-based software 

products offer a wide range of features 

and calculation functions for 

interior and exterior projects. Some 

systems include roadway and room 

estimators — wizards that allow for 

quick calculations of simple spaces 

with normal parameters. Program 

sophistication ranges from basic, 

with minimal drawing tools and calculation 

capabilities, to complex 

forms. Most programs in the marketplace 

provide either numerical 

analysis or color rendering, but few 

are able to provide both within the 

same product. Some also have 

numerical analysis with black and 

white rendering. 

Pricing for these programs 

ranges from zero for basic systems 

to tens of thousands of dollars per 

license for specialty programs. 

Some lighting manufacturers now 

supply specifiers with free software 

that usually includes a database of 

their product lines for easy access. 

These products are geared to less 

complex projects and where rendering 

is less critical. Although a number 

of these products serve well for 

day to day calculations. 

For the more advanced user, specialized 

lighting software developers 

have created programs that 

offer high degrees of flexibility and 

function. It’s now possible for one 

program to work effectively for 

designers who simply want a system 

for checking basic designs and 

also for those who wish to create 

three-dimensional complex architectures 

that can be color-rendered 

for review by the architectural team 

or client. Color rendering is a complex 

area that usually requires a 

skilled lighting practioner to evaluate 

the results. All programs are 

mathematical estimates of what 

we see and cannot take in to consideration 

the psychological aspect 

of how the brain interprets what we 

see. Rendering programs have 

some of the basic elements of cameras, 

and lighting levels and color 

saturation can be manipulated by 

adjustments within the programs. 

One product that incorporates 

complex modeling and color rendering 

is the recently enhanced program 

AGI32 (version 1.50) from 

Lighting Analysts Inc. (www.agi32 

.com). AGI32 now includes color 

texturing for surfaces to enhance 

realism, enhanced adaptive subdivision 

capabilities, and an expanded 

pseudo color range. 

AGI32—which stands for advanced 

graphical interface 32-bit— 

is a lighting design software system 

that enables users to model complex 

architectural elements and produce 

visual three-dimensional renderings 

within one program. The 

renderings are in color and are photometrically 

correct. The program 

utilizes actual luminaire photometric 

files from fixture manufacturers 

to ensure correct calculations. This 

feature provides both the designer 


and the owner with visual feedback during the design 

process. The program’s calculation power allows renderings 

to be produced in seconds and minutes rather 

than the hours and days previously required. This 

increases efficiency while minimizing the potential for 

costly revisions during the construction period. 

AGI32, has a radiosity-based calculation engine that 

provides results in both numerical and rendering modes 

in a very short period of time (Pentium-based systems 

are the minimum requirement). This allows the lighting 

designer to expand the conceptualization process for 

the architectural team. (Note : radiosity software programs 

do not indicate specularity of materials in rendering. 

A combination of Ray Trace and Radiocity calculations 

are required to indicate specular surfaces) 

Lighting Analysts has been creating lighting design 

software for the architectural community since 1984, 

and AGI32 1.50 contains several new features. 

The most recent of these is surface texturing. AGI32 

has always been positioned as “a calculation tool that 

happens to be a rendering program.” By integrating real 

textures into such components as colored carpet, 

brickwork, ceiling tiles, walls and other surfaces 

through the use of bitmap (BMP or JPG) images, 

designers can transform renderings into illustrations. 

AGI32 stores BMPs and JPGs in a searchable database 

and, if more options are desired, the designer can download 

textures from the Internet or from individual 

libraries. In addition, textures can be tiled, wrapped, or 

stretched to match a surface. 

One of AGI32’s improvements from previous generations 

of lighting software is the ease with which complex 

architecture is created. Irregular-shaped objects, 

rooms and buildings can be created from scratch using 

basic three-dimensional elements or a combination of 

building blocks located in the library. Library blocks can 

be saved to use over again in future projects. Once a 

block has been created and saved in the library, the 

block is scalable in any direction (x, y or z). As with any 

3D modelling program, experience is required to create 

The Story of Bruce 

Called an “anti-department store,” Bruce—located in Vancouver’s West End—represents 

a new trend of urban modernist stores. Both the architecture and lighting had to 

complement a two-story open concept. The glass façade allowed the entire store to be 

viewed from the street. 

The lighting system was suspended from the upper level, offering general illumination, 

but also highlighting merchandise and attracting customers. It was crucial that direct 

and diffuse lighting be integrated. 

A bell-shaped luminaire was modified to provide the light levels required for a retail 

application. Two different sizes of luminaire were chosen. Although all the luminaires 

were mounted at the same height, the second-level fixtures were physically smaller due to the reduced floor-to-ceiling height on the upper level. 

Both architect and building owner were uncomfortable 

with how this proposed system would 

work. The architect questioned whether the contrast 

ratios as designed would be too low, creating 

a flat space with no depth perception. Both 

owner and architect needed visual support to 

demonstrate the lighting effects. 

The software created a three-dimensional color 

computer model of the architectural interior and 

exterior that could be viewed interactively from 

any angle. In fact, these e-mailed renderings 

were integral to the Bruce design process. The 

design was approved by all parties with a high 

degree of certainty and client satisfaction.

these complex models and the ability to think spatially 

provides accuracy. As one becomes familiar with the 

program more complex objects and spaces become 

possible 

As one might guess, this feature eliminates many 

steps in the modeling process used to create architecture. 

Domes, vaulted ceilings, curves and extrusions 

are created without modeling in other programs. 

The software analysis tools enable the user to calculate 

lighting levels and uniformity on any surface, 

including sloped or curved, thus allowing for verification 

of vertical and horizontal levels. Ceiling uniformity for 

indirect applications can be calculated and viewed at 

the same time. Light trespass in outdoor applications 

can be reviewed prior to installation, reducing the possibility 

of unwanted and inefficient lighting in nighttime 

settings. Further, the software calculates CIE glare ratings. 

These ratings give an indication of the disability 

glare for a person situated at a location in the calculated 

field, a factor in both site and sports lighting applications 

The program comes with photometric data from 

numerous manufacturers. This data can be 

accessed using different means, among them an 

“Instabase” feature that enables the user to browse a 

manufacturer’s offerings in a tree structure, including 

pictures and polar candela curves. New files can be 

added and the database updated as new production 

become available from manufacturers. Photometric files 

can be downloaded from the web and brought into the 

program. Although the search options in the data base 

are extensive, manufacturer’s files must be in a specific 

format for the search tools to function at its maximum 

Today’s lighting clients often desire to “test-drive” 

their space prior to construction. In the past, while lighting 

designers have had the ability to visualize twodimensional 

drawings in three dimensions, they have 

had to rely on written and verbal communication skills 

or an artist’s rendering to communicate the visual look 

and feel of their design to others. Now, AGI32’s color 

rendering and texturing capability model the effects of 

lighting on proposed architectural environment, meaning 

that others can visualize the space from different 

angles and locations (or from outside, in the case of 

exterior projects). As indicated previously any rendering 

must be carefully evaluated and owners or clients 

briefed on the accuracy of the results. Otherwise there 

are expectations the project will look exactly like the 

rendering. 

This software will never replace an experienced lighting 

designer who has intuition, creativity and education, 

but provides a very good method of communication to 

indicate a lighting designer’s thoughts and ideas to 

clients.

The Grass Is Greener 

Last year the Houston Texans, the newest, and 32nd NFL 

(National Football League) franchise moved into their new home. 

As the first NFL stadium ever built with a retractable roof, Reliant 

Stadium, Houston, TX, is designed to be as innovative as 

Houston’s Astrodome was in 1965. The new stadium also serves 

as the new home for the annual Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo 

and will be host of the Super Bowl XXXVIII in February, 2004. The 

requirements of both football and rodeo are very similar, making 

the facility perfect for both attractions. 

One of the most notable aspects of the design is the unique operable fabric roof. While the NFL 

prefers to play its games in open-air stadiums, the Rodeo, with a winter schedule, has requirements 

for an indoor, controlled environment space. As a result, the need for a retractable roof was apparent 

from the start. Other highlights include four club level theme bars. 

At the “football bar,” tiles were installed in an oval pattern to resemble the shape of a football, 

surrounded by a border of black granite to make the transition to the carpeting smoother. 

Additionally, the lighting fixture above the bar was custom-made to look like the laces of the football, 

and the side panels of the bar are made from the same material as an actual football. 

The other three bars—the Star Bar, Horseshoe Bar, and Spur Bar—were designed with the same 

interplay of stone and light, and each is unique in shape and individual design. 

Nirdair fabric is used for the upper roof. The translucency provides the ambient sunlight to keep 

the natural grass growing—a primary concern after the real grass in the Astrodome died and was 

replaced with Astroturf. (During the first season of play in the Astrodome, the sharp contrast

Lockwood, Andrews & Newnam, Inc. (LAN) and Hermes Architects, Inc., teamed to create 

Houston Stadium Consultants (HSC). HSC lead the consultant team as prime architect with HOK 

Sport as the design consultant. The architect of record is the joint venture of Houston based 

LAN/Daly and Hermes Architects known as Houston Stadium Consultants (HSC) with HOK s+v+e 

as design architect. 

With over 1.9 million square feet, the stadium has over 165 private suites, 7500 club seats and 

550 concession points of service. Installed throughout the concourse of Reliant Stadium are 

Squareline metal ceiling tiles by Illbruck Architectural Products. 

“We were looking for a suspendable ceiling tile product that would conceal piping, lighting and other systems above it and 

not require us to invest in any additional systems, 

such as more sprinklers. Its design 

complimented the contemporary architecture 

of the stadium, which featured aluminum 

trim and finishes throughout,” says Steve 

Parker, lead architect, Houston Stadium Consultants 

(HSC). 

“A bonus was that we could cut the tiles 

on-site to fit for light fixture applications—we 

didn’t have to special order it from the factory 

already cut. That was a necessary timesaver 

for us to get the project completed on 

time.” 

Parker went on to say that he believes the 

building images best describe what the architectural 

team was trying to accomplish as it 

relates to lighting design “ a modern sports 

facility that has a balanced mix of functional 

fixtures for areas such as the public concourse 

with a more refined fixture selection 

for suites and club levels.”

Vari-Lite International, Inc. Sells Manufacturing 

Division to Genlyte Thomas Group LLC 

Vari-Lite International, Inc. has sold the assets of its Vari-Lite products manufacturing 

and sales division to Genlyte Thomas Group LLC (GTG), a leading manufacturer 

of lighting fixtures and controls for commercial, industrial and residential 

markets. The sale included the Vari-Lite family of products as well as all sales, 

manufacturing and engineering operations associated with this division. GTG also 

acquired the Vari-Lite trademark and all patents associated with Vari-Lite products. 

The purchase price, is estimated to be $10.5 million – $11.5 million. 

“Operating as a manufacturer and a rental company was confusing to the industry, 

and it limited the growth prospects of both our Vari-Lite manufacturing and 

sales division and VLPS Lighting Services, our rental division,” said Rusty 

Brutsché, chairman and CEO of Vari-Lite International, Inc. “In order for both divisions 

to achieve their maximum potential, there had to be a clear separation of 

the two. This transaction allows VLPS Lighting Services to operate independently 

and to focus on its core competency, lighting rental and production services.” 

Vari-Lite International, Inc. will ultimately change its name to VLPS Lighting 

Services International, Inc. to further reflect the Company’s continued commitment 

to provide lighting systems and services to the entertainment industry.

NCQLP Announces Test Results – 2002 Examination 

Joseph M. Good, III, President, 

NCQLP, announced that 209 lighting 

practitioners sat for the 2002 exam. 

With a pass rate of 78.5 percent, the 

roster of lighting certified individuals 

have been increased by 154 full LCs 

and 10 Intern LCs. 

The LC class of 2002 now brings the 

total number of LCs to 1127. 

The National Council on Qualifications 

for the Lighting Professions is a 

non-profit corporation founded in 1991 

to serve and protect the well-being of 

the public through effective and efficient 

lighting practice. Through a peer 

review process, the NCQLP establishes 

the education, experience and 

examination requirements for certification 

in the lighting industry. 

Thirty-six percent of those who have 

sat for the LC exam over the past 

three years identify themselves as 

lighting designers/consultants. The 

two next largest groups are electrical 

engineers (16 percent), and manufacturers’ 

representatives and sales representatives 

(12 percent). 

Thirty-four percent list experience 

levels at 6-10 years, with another 38 

percent indicating 11-20 years of 

experience. An average of 50 percent 

of exam takers hold bachelor degrees; 

18.7 percent hold advanced degrees. 

Sixty-eight percent identify themselves 

as members of the IESNA; 14 

percent, the IALD. Four percent each 

cite their primary affiliation as AEE, 

IEEE or the AIA. 

This year, sixteen graduate and undergraduate 

students in lighting took 

the LC examination as participants in 

the NCQLP Intern Program. An accredited 

college offering a minimum of 12 

credit hours in lighting or lighting related 

courses can apply to be a part of 

this program. Seven students from 

Penn State University, four students 

from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, 

and five from Parsons sat for the LC 

examination; ten of those who took 

the examination are now designated 

Intern LCs. 

The Intern LC program was partially 

funded by two grants from the 

Nuckolls Fund for Lighting Education 

and additional grants from the Lutron 

Foundation and the Golden Gate 

Section of the IESNA.

The Kachel Fieldhouse includes recreational 

multipurpose courts and a competition 200 meter 

running track. Our design addresses the lighting 

requirements of various sports, while meeting 

rigorous sustainable design objectives. 

Managing Glare 

After establishing the architectural design to provide an adequate 

level of daylight, the next step focused on assessing and 

resolving problems with glare. Direct sun or a very bright diffuse 

surface in a athlete’s field of view were central concerns.

efficient and simple to operate, with 

design features making it a model for 

future facilities. Simply put, these were the goals of 

the design team and owner. 

The DLK/Kachel Fieldhouse addition to the 

Williams Center at the University of Wisconsin – 

Whitewater was designed to create an intercollegiate 

competition facility for indoor track meets 

and to expand recreational and intramural space 

for students on campus and the surrounding 

community. The project was also designated to 

establish a model design process for incorporating 

sustainable design elements into this and 

future projects for the State of Wisconsin. To this 

end, the architects and engineers at Hammel, 

Green and Abrahamson (HGA) worked with 

energy consultants The Weidt Group and State of 

Wisconsin facilities development personnel to 

develop energy savings strategies that included 

reduced energy consumption for lighting loads 

and the use of daylighting. 

Daylighting Design 

It was once said by a wise man that daylighting 

is like taking a sip of water from a fire hydrant. 

The sun is a powerful light source so bright that 

it can seldom be used directly for most interior 

visual environments unless controlled properly. 

The best source of daylight is from the sky, not the 

sun, so glazing orientations for a building need to 

maximize the facades where the sunlight can be 

easily controlled. The north orientation, and then 

the south, are desirable in northern latitudes, 

while east and west facades are problematic due 

to low sun angles, and are difficult to control costeffectively. 

During design, several variations on architectural 

roof forms and fenestration alternatives were 

studied using physical daylight models and energy 

simulation software. Among the alternatives studied: 

flat roof vs. barrel vaulted; Low-E clear glazing 

vs. translucent, insulating glazing (e.g. Kalwall); 

active and passive sunlight control features; and 

the use of skylights. Vertical fenestration was evaluated 

on various combinations of the north, south, 

and west faces of the building. The east face of the 

building was not evaluated because it abuts the 

existing building. 

Several of the passive sunlight control features 

under consideration, including internal light 

shelves and redirecting glass block, were eliminated 

due to their associated construction costs. Some 

glazing placements and types were eliminated due 

to unacceptable glare created by direct sunlight hitting 

the playing surfaces during large periods of the 

year, while others were eliminated due to owner 

preferences. 

The architectural design finally selected was a 

barrel vault roof with translucent, insulating glazing 

on the north, south and west faces. Based on 

physical scale-model measurements, the barrel 

vault roof form provided 35 percent greater daylight 

levels in the center of the fieldhouse compared 

to a flat roof configuration. This was due to 

the increase in window height on the north and 

south walls compared to the flat roof. Adding glazing 

high along the west wall increased daylight 

levels further, improving daylight uniformity from 

north to south.

direct sunlight. Using low visible 

light transmittance (VLT) 

glazing can reduce surface 

brightness. However, low VLT 

glazing also reduces the 

amount of interior daylight 

available throughout the year. 

Historic weather information 

for Whitewater, Wisconsin 

showed that a significant percentage 

of days could be 

expected to be overcast. 

Selecting VLT characteristics at 

this building site became a balancing 

act between reducing 

glare during sunny conditions 

and depressed interior daylight 

levels during the majority of the 

time it is overcast. 

Instead of selecting a “one 

size fits all” approach to balancing 

the VLT needs on the 

project, a customized approach 

was used, “tuning” the VLT to 

the requirements of each façade 

orientation, balancing the

still presents the 

potential to produce 

impacts of glare, interior light level, and energy performance. 

On the west window wall a very low VLT (15 percent) was 

selected to ensure the diffuse surface would not be too bright 

within the field of view of the multi-sport playing courts. The 

south windows with an overhang had less exposure to sunlight 

throughout the year, allowing a higher value of VLT (35 

percent). On the north, transparent glass could have worked, 

but to maintain architectural consistency, diffuse glazing with 

the highest available VLT (50 percent) for the glazing product 

selected was used.

Electric Lighting 

The 60,000 sq ft fieldhouse is used 

by both the public and college students 

for recreational level basketball and volleyball, 

hosts indoor practices for the 

university football and baseball teams, 

and serves as the indoor competition 

space for the track and field team. 

Within the fieldhouse is a 200-meter 

track as well as accommodations for 

long jump, pole vaulting and shot-put. 

The IESNA recommendations for these 

varied sports and competition levels fall 

into two categories: 30 footcandles with 

a 4-to-1-uniformity ratio for the recreational 

sports, and 50 footcandles with 

a 2.5-to-1 uniformity ratio for competitive 

track meets. Vertical footcandle levels 

were also important for many of 

these sports. 

The luminaires were to be mounted 

from the roof, with luminaire height 

following the curve of the structure, 

between 20 and 35 feet above the 

floor. Several luminaire types were 

considered before settling on prismatic 

high-bays. Opaque reflector highbay 

luminaires were considered 

briefly, due to their higher 

downward efficiency, compared 

to prismatic refractor 

high-bays, but were rejected 

because of the vertical illuminance 

requirements. The 

nature of the space also 

demanded that the ceiling be 

illuminated to continue the 

bright, daylit atmosphere into 

the facility’s evening and night 

hours, and the shrouded highbay 

would have created a 

darkened ceiling during 

evening hours. Indirect lighting 

was also considered, but 

ultimately rejected due to concerns 

about reduced efficiency 

and because a revealed light 

source was desired, avoiding 

the “overcast day” feeling that 

100 percent indirect solutions 

can create. 

Once the prismatic high bay 

solution was chosen, samples were requested from several 

major manufacturers. Glass refractors were chosen over acrylic 

due to the high probability for repeated impact with balls. The 

50-year design life of the building also precluded any solution 

that might yellow and become brittle over time. After a review 

of the samples, it was readily apparent that borosilicate glass

During normal daily operation, (middle) 

half of the fixtures are locked out during 

daylight hours, maintaining 30 footcandles and 

a 3:1 max to min ratio. Using only 0.5 watt/ft 2 , 

a dramatic 55 percent savings beyond state 

energy code limits is achieved. Controls 

automatically alternate these locked-out 

fixtures each day, increasing anticipated lamp 

life from 8 to 12 years based on 

14 hours of daily operation. 

During special events, (bottom) a keyed 

override allows all fixtures to be on, 

maintaining 50 footcandles and a 2:1 max 

to min ratio with 1.0 watt/ft 2 used. This 

override automatically resets after 24 hours to 

ensure continued energy savings.

would be preferred over soda lime glass due to its crystal clarity, 

durability, and high-quality optical properties. The borosilicate 

glass luminaires specified also exhibited excellent optical 

control and low brightness, essential in reducing glare created 

from the luminaires themselves. Metal halide pulse start lamps 

(320-W) were selected because of their higher efficacy, longer 

lamp life, and better lumen maintenance, compared to standard 

metal halide lamps. 

Controls 

An opportunity to maximize savings from lighting controls 

presented itself due to the dual nature of events in the space. 

The recreational activities required 30 horizontal footcandles, 

while an intercollegiate track competition required 50 horizontal 

footcandles. This difference in lighting levels created the 

potential for a control system to reduce the energy usage of the 

building automatically. Why not design a lighting control system 

that would allow the users to have enough light for their 

needs, but no more A system that took into account the daylight 

available, yet was not overly complex A system that, in 

the end, would reduce the energy consumption of the facility, 

and extend the maintenance cycle These became the goals of 

the design team. 

The designer had the responsibility of controlling not only 

the lights, but divider curtains, basketball backboards, 

retractable batting cages, and ceiling fans for the fieldhouse. 

Past visits to similar facilities had nearly always revealed 

banks of light switches, and scattered controls for other 

room systems. With controls for more than 20 pieces of 

equipment in addition to the lighting, an integrated 

approach would be a clear benefit to this facility. A control 

panel was designed to include a silk-screened floor plan of 

the courts and running track, allowing control devices to be 

graphically associated with the controlled equipment location. 

This was of particular benefit to the lighting controls, 

immediately identifying which area of the fieldhouse was 

meant by “Court #3”. This central control panel gave the 

facility staff a central point to control all the functions and 

athletic systems in the fieldhouse. 

The lighting in the fieldhouse was split to create separate 

control zones for each court and the track. Each of these zones 

are able to be turned to High or Low levels. One of the features 

of the lighting control system is an automatic mid-day lockout 

of the High level lighting. During the bulk of daylight hours, 

when the natural light coming in through the clerestories provides 

significant illumination, only half of the luminaires are 

allowed to be on. If the High level is selected prior to the lockout, 

the lights are automatically turned to Low at the beginning 

of the lockout period. After the expiration of the lockout period, 

manual action is required to raise the lighting to higher levels. 

This mid-day lockout, automatically reducing energy 

usage, and requiring manual interaction to increase energy 

usage, creates significant maintenance and energy savings. 

Several iterations of the lighting control features took place. 

Throughout the process, the design mantra was “keep it simple 

for the users”. It would have been very easy to make the system 

complicated, and in the process, guarantee that the occupants 

would not use the system as intended. For this reason, options 

like “All High” and “All Low” buttons were discarded. 

Simplicity was also in mind when it was decided to use astronomic 

timeclock control, rather than daylight sensors, to determine 

the mid-day lockout period. During track competitions 

and other special events, a simple keyed override allows all the 

luminaires to be on during mid-day, providing maximum footcandles 

and uniformity, regardless of weather conditions. This 

override automatically resets after 24 hours to ensure continued 

energy savings. 

A great maintenance saving feature was realized when an 

alternate-day cycle was incorporated into the control system 

for the low level lighting. Since only half the luminaires 

would be on during most daylight hours, alternating these 

luminaires each day (the ‘A’ set of luminaires on odd days, 

the ‘B’ set of luminaires on even days) would greatly extend 

the expected lamp life in terms of maintenance cycle. The 

lighting control system, while not overly complicated with 

daylight sensors, did require complex “if-then” programming 

to accommodate the desired functions. Project-specific 

software programming by the controls manufacturer 

addressed the mid-day lockout with key override, alternateday 

scheduling, and other features. 

This project presented challenges and opportunities that 

were tackled by pursuing an integrated approach to the building, 

its architectural as well as electrical systems, and energy 

usage. The end result is a building that operates like the athletes 

it provides shelter to, performing at peak efficiency and getting 

the most of the available energy.

lighting design for over 10 years, Jay has received a Guth Award of Merit in 

addition to the EPRI Award of Merit received for this project. He is a graduate 

of the University of Wisconsin – Madison and is has been a member of the 

IESNA for three years. 

Thomas McDougall directs the Energy Design department at The Weidt 

Group. As Vice President of The Weidt Group for the last ten years, he has been 

an energy and environmental design consultant for numerous award winning 

architectural projects, including four National AIA Top Ten Earth Day Building 

awards. He has also managed the development of over a half dozen successful 

building analysis software design tools and has consulted to major building 

manufacturers. Over the last eight years, the Energy Design department at The 

Weidt Group has provided comprehensive energy design assistance on over 

350 new building projects in collaboration with over 200 architectural and 

engineering design firms. Mr. McDougall is a Professional Engineer with a 

Masters degree in Architecture.

The Frist Center for the Visual Arts is 

an adaptive reuse of Nashville’s 

landmark art deco Broadway Post 

Office. The restoration and renovation of 

this historic building was part of a much 

larger downtown rehabilitation project initiated 

in 1993 as a public process known as 

“Nashville’s Agenda.” The mission of the 

new “museum” building was to provide a 

major exhibit facility and community art 

center focused on educating Nashville citizens 

of all ages in order to stimulate and 

nourish their appreciation, understanding 

and creativity in the visual arts. 

NASHVILLE’S 

FRIST-CLASS MUSEUM 

For the design team the project evolved 

as a three-part endeavor. First was the 

transformation of the vast mail sorting and 

distribution area into two levels of changing 

exhibition galleries connected by a 

monumental stair. Second was the design 

of the amenity areas including auditorium, 

gift shop, café, classrooms and administrative 

offices. But by far the most challenging 

for the lighting designers was the historic 

renovation component of the project, 

which included the restoration of both 

exterior and interior elements of the build-

ing with the primary focus on the public entry lobby. 

In the early 30s, the Hoover administration, desperate to put 

builders back to work, approved the construction of this major 

downtown building. Originally designed by the Nashville firm 

of Marr & Holman Architects and renovated by Tuck•Hinton 

Architects, also of Nashville, this textbook example of the 

stripped classical style prevalent in the 

1930s depression era, provided a welcome 

canvas for the multi-layered exterior lighting 

concept. 

Along the front of the building street 

poles contain discretely mounted metal 

halide floodlights, which provide a broad 

wash of illumination across the entire 

white marble façade operating as the 

base layer of light. The deep punched 

windows with their detailed metal work 

and fluted vertical pilasters are highlighted 

with asymmetrical metal halide 

accent lights emphasizing the rhythm 

and verticality of the architectural elements. 

Typical of the neo-classical style 

the two entrance bays are placed symmetrically, 

with each set of doors flanked 

by decorative lanterns. These lanterns 

were renovated with low maintenance 

induction lamps. This 100,000 hour life 

lamp significantly reduces re-lamping 

therefore minimizing the need to open 

the lantern cavity reducing exposure to 

weather, dampness and dirt. Over the 

entry doors, rear illuminated decorative 

grills provide the entry’s luminous backdrop 

achieved with fluorescent channels. 

Surrounding the doorways, highlighted 

architectural elements provide focus, 

punch and interest. 

The majestic building, which functioned 

as a post office until closing its 

doors for renovation in 1999, was somewhat 

run down, but fortunately had been

virtually untouched since its 1934 opening. Original details, 

metal work and especially light fixtures were old and dirty with 

some missing parts and broken glass but all the proper bones 

remained intact. This is particularly apparent in the main postal 

lobby. The refurbishment of the decorative pendants included 

cast glass diffusers with compact fluorescent lamps, which emit 

a central shaft of dimmable light. Halogen uplights hidden at 

the top of the fixtures highlight the deco ceiling details and 

integral MR-16s provide downlight accents for table and floor 

surfaces. Wall sconces also utilize compact fluorescent lamps 

for long life and ease of maintenance.

borrowed light was unavailable, cavities were created and illuminated 

with fluorescent strips in order to rear illuminate decorative 

grills. These fluorescent strips were gelled with color 

correction warm toned filters. 

A major architectural component of the renovation is the 

grills was part of the overall lighting design concept for the 

main lobby. This supplemental illumination was achieved 

through the windowed gift shop, located directly behind the 

main façade, and from the adjacent interior stair hall. When 

new stair hall. Located behind the original postal lobby it 

marks the transition to the new areas and provides vertical circulation 

between the two levels of gallery space. The new stair 

hall reflects the art deco style while maintaining a modern flavor. 

Here the design balances natural and artificial illumination 

throughout the day and evening utilizing multi-faceted 

sources. At the very top of the curved ceiling panels, clerestory 

windows provide controlled natural illumination, allowing 

daylight to enter the public stair hall but not strike directly on 

the exhibit walls. Supplemental fluorescent uplight scoops, 

with integral asymmetric biaxial lamp fixtures, bathe the 

curved ceiling panels with soft diffused light. Borrowed light, 

delivered through the decorative grills at the lower level and 

glass wall panels at the upper level provide vertical illumination. 

The art deco theme is evident in the illuminated sweeping 

underside of the monumental stair, highlighted with a fluorescent 

cove, and custom wall sconces, which incorporate a

A major element of the restoration included the rehabilitation 

of the original period light fixtures. Both exterior and interior 

fixtures of ten different varieties were carefully removed, 

renovated and re-hung. Refurbished by Rambusch Decorating 

Company of New Jersey, they first received a gentle cleaning 

and were then rewired and modified to accept new lamping, 

glass panels (when necessary), and numerous missing metal 

details. Matching new and old glass was carefully studies to 

maintain continuity. Because many fixtures were modified to 

accept new long life lamp sources, primarily fluorescent for
