Where we are<br />

<strong>Saltwell</strong> <strong>Park</strong> is located directly behind<br />

<strong>Gateshead</strong> College and is signposted from<br />

the A167.The <strong>Park</strong> can be accessed by<br />

pedestrians only from East <strong>Park</strong> Road,<br />

West <strong>Park</strong> Road, <strong>Saltwell</strong> Road South,<br />

<strong>Saltwell</strong> View and Joicey Road.The car and<br />

coach park is accessed from Durham Road<br />

(A167) via Joicey Road.<br />

By Metro<br />

From all stations on the Tyne & Wear<br />

Metro System take the metro to<br />

<strong>Gateshead</strong> then follow the instructions for<br />

travel by bus.<br />

By Bus<br />

No 53 leaves from <strong>Gateshead</strong> Interchange<br />

stopping on Brinkburn Avenue which leads<br />

directly to <strong>Saltwell</strong> <strong>Park</strong>. No 54 leaves from<br />

<strong>Gateshead</strong> Interchange stopping on<br />

<strong>Saltwell</strong> View which runs along the <strong>Park</strong>’s<br />

northern boundary. No 54 returns from<br />

the <strong>Park</strong> to <strong>Gateshead</strong> Interchange.<br />

8 The Dene<br />

The Dene, a woodland valley, was created to<br />

provide a multi-sensory experience in the <strong>Park</strong>.<br />

The stream has been restored with pools,<br />

cascades and a lily pond.<br />

11 Education Centre<br />

The original Stable Block behind <strong>Saltwell</strong> Towers<br />

is now an education area for use by schools,<br />

colleges and community groups.<br />

South <strong>Park</strong> is designed to reflect a ‘Capability<br />

Brown’ style area of open parkland decorated<br />

with clumps of trees.<br />

13 The Maze<br />

William Wailes built the maze for his own<br />

family and is still enjoyed today by adults and<br />

children.The original plan for the maze was<br />

found and the hedges replanted to reflect the<br />

original design.<br />

14 Octagonal Garden<br />

The lawned area behind the Towers hosts<br />

open-air performances.<br />

15 South Dene Nursery<br />

Public sports facilities<br />

The <strong>Park</strong>’s tennis and basketball facilities are<br />

free of charge all year round.<br />

The Nursery is run by South Dene Allotment<br />

Association and is open to the public for the<br />

purchase of plants and gardening supplies.<br />

16 The Grove<br />

2 The Broadwalk & Northern Fields<br />

The Northern Fields is the main area for picnics<br />

and events and the Broadwalk for flower displays.<br />

Almond Pavilion Refreshment House<br />

The Almond Pavilion has been restored to<br />

replicate the original appearance of the 1881<br />

building. It houses a new summer season<br />

refreshment kiosk and toilet facilities.<br />

The Lake<br />

The lake is a refuge for wildlife. Public boating on the<br />

Lake takes place throughout the summer months.<br />

5 Play areas<br />

Children from toddler age upwards have two<br />

play areas to enjoy.<br />

6 The bowling greens<br />

The <strong>Park</strong> hosts three popular bowling greens with<br />

the historic Avenue Green Pavilion a focal point.<br />

7 The Rose Garden<br />

The rose garden provides a peaceful haven in<br />

the heart of the <strong>Park</strong>.<br />

9 <strong>Saltwell</strong> Towers<br />

<strong>Saltwell</strong> Towers was the mansion house of<br />

William Wailes and is an eclectic mix of Gothic,<br />

Elizabethan and French styles, creating a fairy tale<br />

castle effect. It houses a visitors’ centre and café<br />

and also hosts evening events.<br />

10 Animal House<br />

A new animal house has been constructed to<br />

house domestic animals and two historic<br />

aviaries have been restored.<br />

The Grove houses a loggia shelter for seating and<br />

the <strong>Park</strong>’s bandstand. During the summer the<br />

bandstand hosts a programme of band concerts<br />

on Sunday afternoons.<br />

17 Car and coach park<br />

A car and coach park is accessed from Joicey<br />

Road. It is monitored by a CCTV system which<br />

also extends into the <strong>Park</strong>.<br />

T Toilets<br />

Public toilets are available in the <strong>Park</strong>.There is<br />

disabled access and facilities at each location.
