Five years ago, town officials realized that many residents weren’t aware of the scope of town-sponsored activities. Their solution was to publish a unique magazine style calendar listing called, There’s a lot to do in Windsor. The publication, which started as just eight pages, has grown to 36 and now includes entries from non-government entities such as Windsor’s Chamber of Commerce, First Town Downtown and the Historical Society, just to name a few. We think including these types of events really adds to the magazine and better reflects what a wonderful town Windsor is. All told, in the 15 issues of There’s a lot to do in Windsor, more than 3,375 programs for Windsor’s kids, teens, adults, seniors and families have been featured! If you see some way in which we can make this publication even more useful, please call me with your suggestions and criticism. After all, that’s the way town government works in Windsor and this publication should carry on that tradition. Those covers are provided by noted photographer (and Windsor resident), Dr. Leonard Hellerman and we have reproduced them here just to remind everyone how beautiful they are. We are very fortunate that Dr. Hellerman has been so gracious in sharing his work with us. When we sit down to choose a cover photo for an upcoming edition, Dr. Hellerman shows us twenty slides he thinks might be suitable. The problem is, every one is more than suitable and we have to choose the best of the best! Finding the information you need There are more than 500 listings in this brochure describing programs and activities for Windsor residents of all ages. The information is presented by age groupings with the “Everyone” section containing information on adult programming as well as special events for the whole family. His photography has been exhibited in many places including: Real Art Ways in Hartford, West Hartford Art League, University of Connecticut Medical-Dental School, Cornell Museum in Delray Beach, Florida, Wintonbury Art League, Hartford Hospital, Palm Beach Photographic Centre and the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts, of which he is a member. A member of the Panel of Judges for the Connecticut Association of Photographers, Dr. Hellerman also lectures on the subject of photographic composition. He has been the recipient of many awards of the Charter Oak Photographic Society in Hartford, and has also received honors from the Loxahatchee National Wildlife Preserve, Connecticut Rivers Contest, Henry Clay Estate Photo Contest, West Hartford Art League, Mystic Outdoor Art Festival, and the New Milford Outdoor Art Festival. His stunning work has been featured over the past several years in the State of Connecticut’s Environmental Protection calendar. He is currently under contract with the State of Connecticut to photograph its twenty-five natural area preserves. Windsor thanks you, Dr. Hellerman! 2
Everyone The most beautiful New England fall is right here in Windsor! August August 28: Clover Street School’s Newcomers’ Social will be held today from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM. All first graders and any other new families are welcome to tour the building and enjoy ice cream. Free. Call 687-2050 for information. September September 1: Do you have questions about how to help your baby or preschooler learn Ellsworth School’s Family Resource Center Parent Educator can help. A certified parent educator and a family support social worker are available to work with you on issues such as age appropriate behavior, potty training and much more. Free. September 3: The Free Playgroups begin today from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM at the Ellsworth School Family Resource Center and runs every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday through December 20. Children from newborn to age 5 with an adult will enjoy free play, arts and crafts, a light snack and many other age appropriate toys and activities. Drop in anytime. Free. Call 687-2070 for information. September 4: The Oliver Ellsworth School PTO meeting is tonight from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM. September 4: The Romp & Learn after school program lets kids participate in games and sports, creative arts & crafts and provides a study center and homework assistance. It will be held at 330 Windsor Avenue from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM, Monday through Friday beginning today and transportation will be available. Please pre-register. $8.00 per day. Call 285-1990 for information. September 5: T’ai Chi Ch’uan (Beginner Level) meets each Wednesday from 7:30 PM to 8:30 PM through November 7 at the L.P. Wilson Community Center. All students are welcome. $58.00. Call 285-1990 for information. September 5: T’ai Chi Ch’uan (60 postures short form) meets each Wednesday through November 7 from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM at the L.P. Wilson Community Center. This is for students that have completed the “Yang Style” “Short Form” and wish to deepen their understanding of Energy Mastery and Push Hands Practice through standing Chi Kung and form correction/review. $86.00. Call 285-1990 for information. September 5: T’ai Chi “Sword Form” (63 postures) meets each Wednesday from 8:30 PM to 9:30 PM through November 7 at the L.P. Wilson Community Center. If you suffer from diabetes or know someone who does, join us for an informative diabetes support group meeting. A guest speaker will update you on changes and developments that relate to diabetes. September 8: What Windsor Wore: Exploring History through Dress. This exhibition, at the Windsor Historical Society, 96 Palisado Avenue (Route 159), explores what Windsor residents wore and what messages their clothing communicated from the 1790’s through the end of the 20th century. Rare clothing and accessories from the Windsor Historical Society’s extensive costume collections. Diaries, letters, portraits, inventories, and account books will be used to reveal evidence about men’s and women’s work, social status, fashion, and consumer choice. A hands-on area for adults and children will allow the public to try on reproduction clothing in front of a mirror, and explore conscious and unconscious messages clothing can send. As part of the exhibition opening today, curator Amber Degn will give a slide presentation showing the detective work involved in piecing together Windsor lives from the historical record. This exhibition continues through June 14, 2002 from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM; $3.00 adults, $1.00 children, free to Windsor Historical Society members. Call 688-3813 for information. September 8: Enjoy great gospel singing at Windsor’s Gospel Festival from 1:30 PM to 4:00 PM on the Windsor Town Green. Sponsored by the Archer Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church, the Windsor Gospel Festival is held to provide the Windsor community with a celebration and tribute through song and worship in honor of Connecticut’s Freedom Trail month.
