September 22: American Heritage<br />

River: Rediscover<strong>in</strong>g the Art, Scenic,<br />

and His<strong>to</strong>ric Treasures <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Connecticut Valley. The W<strong>in</strong>dsor His<strong>to</strong>rical<br />

Society celebrates its 80th anniversary with a<br />

buffet d<strong>in</strong>ner and slide lecture at Loomis Chaffee<br />

School. William Hosley will survey the people,<br />

places, and th<strong>in</strong>gs that figured prom<strong>in</strong>ently <strong>in</strong> the<br />

cultural and artistic life <strong>of</strong> the Connecticut Valley<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g its first two centuries. Aspects <strong>of</strong> regional<br />

his<strong>to</strong>ry will be explored through graves<strong>to</strong>nes,<br />

architecture and household furnish<strong>in</strong>gs. These<br />

objects illustrate the bond that l<strong>in</strong>ked the neighbor<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>to</strong>wns <strong>of</strong> the Connecticut Valley while<br />

<strong>of</strong>fer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>sights <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> the people who owned<br />

them. The Valley’s transformation from an<br />

essentially prov<strong>in</strong>cial and agrarian culture <strong>to</strong><br />

the vanguard <strong>of</strong> the 19th century’s high tech<br />

<strong>in</strong>dustrial revolution will be discussed. Please<br />

September 22: Participate <strong>in</strong> the Free<strong>do</strong>m<br />

Trail Run beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g at 5:30 AM at the Archer<br />

Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church. The Free<strong>do</strong>m Trail<br />

Run is a significant event, which provides <strong>in</strong>dividuals<br />

and families an opportunity <strong>to</strong> pay tribute <strong>to</strong><br />

those brave souls who fled from the South <strong>in</strong><br />

search <strong>of</strong> free<strong>do</strong>m by way <strong>of</strong> the Underground<br />

Railroad. While tak<strong>in</strong>g part <strong>in</strong> this event, participants<br />

will have time <strong>to</strong> reflect upon the sacrifices<br />

made by the ances<strong>to</strong>rs <strong>of</strong> the African American<br />

people who live <strong>to</strong>day.<br />

The run is 7.4 miles beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g at the Archer<br />

Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church and end<strong>in</strong>g at the<br />

entrance <strong>to</strong> Keney Park. Participants will s<strong>to</strong>p at<br />

two W<strong>in</strong>dsor Free<strong>do</strong>m Trail sites <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

Joseph Ra<strong>in</strong>ey House and the Nancy Toney<br />

gravesite. Participants are welcome <strong>to</strong> run the full<br />

7.4 miles or any portion <strong>of</strong> it. Call 688-2479 for<br />

September 24: GED Prep and Adult<br />

Basic Education classes beg<strong>in</strong> <strong>to</strong>day at Oliver<br />

Bl<strong>in</strong>d Support Group meets <strong>to</strong>day from<br />

11:00 AM <strong>to</strong> 2:00 PM at the L.P. Wilson<br />

Community Center. This group is for persons who<br />

have low vision or who are bl<strong>in</strong>d as well as their<br />

caregivers. The group will have the opportunity <strong>to</strong><br />

ga<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation through speakers, access<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

community as well as a chance <strong>to</strong> share concerns<br />

a $5.00 early bird entrance charge from<br />
