1-26 ASSOCIATION CROSS-COUNTRY SOARING SWEEPSTAKES (Revised Jan 1, 2002)
The 1-26 Association, a Division of the Soaring Society of America. This is a national program with winners in each
of the 3 Divisions of the 1-26 Association (East, Central, West). The program is based upon distance flights. See
the map inside the back cover of The Log for divisions.
Pilots must be members of the 1-26 Association. Membership dues may accompany the Flight Report Form.
Divided into three categories based upon experience level of the pilot as of Jan 1 of the Sweepstakes year:
BRONZE - a pilot with less than Silver Badge.
SILVER - a pilot with Silver Badge and less than Gold Badge.
GOLD - a pilot with a Gold Badge or better.
Prizes will be awarded for the top 3 qualifying pilots in each category within each division.
Rules: 1. All flights shall be made in a Schweizer 1-26.
2. Qualifying flights shall be distance flights. Either straight line distance or distance achieved around turn
points may be used. Flights around turn points need not be closed course flights.
(A) The minimum distance flown shall be 50 km.
(B) No turn point may be used more than once. No turn point shall be less than 10 km from any other
turn point or from the start point.
3. Documentation for straight line distance flights shall include a takeoff witness and a landing witness.
4. Film documentation for distance flights around turn points shall include in addition to Rule 3:
(A) Photo documentation using a mounted camera showing takeoff area including wing tip of aircraft
flown, turn points in sequence flown, and landing area including tail number of aircraft flown.
(B) Certification by the Official Observer that the photos were taken during the claimed flight and that
the film negative documents each claimed turn point in the sequence claimed. The requirements of
Rule 3 may be satisfied by the Official Observer film analysis.
(C) Certification by the Official Observer that the coordinates submitted for the start point, each turn
point, and landing point have been checked for accuracy and meet the requirements of Rule 2.
(D) Film strips are no longer required, only developed photographs will be accepted. The Official
Observer shall transfer film sequence information to the back of each photo including turn point
name, turn point number, film sequence number, and certify with his initials.
5. GPS documentation for distance flights around turn points shall include in addition to Rule 3:
(A) An FAI approved GNSS Flight Recorder shall be used for GPS flight documentation.
(B) Certification by the Official Observer that the flight data log was downloaded and converted to the
*.IGC file format under the Official Observer’s control. The requirements of Rule 3 may be
satisfied by the Official Observer flight log analysis.
(C) Certification by the Official Observer that the coordinates submitted for the start point, each turn
point, and landing point have been checked for accuracy and meet the requirements of Rule 2.
(D) Certification by the Official Observer that each turn point submitted represents a distinct and easily
recognizable landmark which could serve as a photo turn point, and the time that the path of flight
passed through the FAI photo zone for that turn point.
6. Flights submitted for competition must originate in the Division for which the claim is made. The pilot
does not have to be a resident of that Division.
7. Flights may be made any time from Jan. 1 through Dec. 31 of the Sweepstakes year.
8. Flights made as part of the 1-26 Championships are not eligible.
9. Flight claims must be postmarked not later than January 10 following the Sweepstakes year.
10. The winning pilot shall be the one with the highest score for his Category within his Division.
(A) The total number of flights scored shall be determined by random drawing of a number (X = 1, 2,
3, 4, or 5) after Dec. 31 of the Sweepstakes year.
(B) The pilot’s score shall be the total distance for his or her “X” longest flights submitted.
(C) Pilots who submit less than “X” flights shall not be considered for scoring.
11. The Official Observer for a flight shall be an SSA Official Observer, soaring site fixed base operator
(FBO), or a member in good standing of the 1-26 Association.

RATIONALE FOR SWEEPSTAKES RULES CHANGES
Allows use of FAI approved GNSS Flight Recorders for Sweepstakes flights. Currently there is not a secure method available
for creating IGC format flight records from hand held GPS receivers, however, the security methods for FAI approved Flight
Recorders is well established and widely used for record and badge flight documentation. Since a Sweepstakes flight is not
declared in advance, a Flight Recorder would allow a pilot to claim any point in space as a turn point after the fact. This
would pose a significant advantage over someone using a turn point camera, and defeats the purpose of encouraging good
cross country techniques. Therefore a requirement has been added to make the declared turn point a “distinct and easily
recognizable landmark which could serve as a photo turn point.” The application of this rule is left to the judgment of the
Official Observer.
Photos: Changes requirements for sending film for flight documentation. From now on, photos should be sent which are annotated on
the back side by the Official Observer in terms of turn point identification, sequence, etc. With the new paranoia about
anthrax in the mail, it is likely that some mail may be routinely irradiated or x-rayed. This could damage the original flight
documentation, so I prefer the negatives to remain in the possession of the Pilot or Official Observer, and only send prints
through the mail.
Rule 4: Changes reference from “film” to “photo” to conform to new photo documentation policy.
(D) Adds requirement for Official Observer to transfer flight sequence information to the back of each submitted photo. The
pre-takeoff, turn points in sequence, and landing photos should agree with the sequence on the flight report, and the film
sequence numbers (found on the negative strip) shows the sequence in which the photos were taken. The Official
Observer’s initials are required since each photo is a supporting document for the flight.
Rule 5: Adds method for submitting flight reports using FAI approved GNSS Flight Recorders.
(A) Only FAI approved GNSS Flight Recorders are allowed at this time. A list of approved equipment is in the FAI Sporting
Code.
(B) The IGC file is to be created under the supervision of the Official Observer, just like for FAI badges and records, except
that a separate B1 document is not required. Data logger type, serial number, flight date, etc. are automatically included
in the IGC file.
(C) Same requirement as for photo documentation.
(D) Requirement to assure that each “turn point” is a “distinct and easily recognizable landmark which could serve as a photo
turn point.” This is a judgment call for the Official Observer. The best way to apply the rule is to ask “if I tried to
document this turn point with a camera, would anyone be able to recognize it, or distinguish it from similar looking
places in the area”
Rule 6 – 11: Change in number sequence, no change in content.
