Sierra Club
Palos Verdes - South Bay Group/Angeles Chapter
PV-SB Group, Sierra Club
P.O. Box 2464, PVP, CA 90274
Supplement to the January 2007 Southern Sierran
Thank you, Bob
Bob Beach has decided to move
on from his role as our Outings
Chair. The PV-SB Group has
enjoyed his company and relied on his
services to the group and the club for
quite a while. Consequently, I would like
to speak for all of us when we say thank
you to Bob for a job well done.
Bob came into Sierra Club outings
leadership in 1994. That’s relatively late
when considered in the context of his
Boy Scout leadership activism which
dates back to 1960. But, when Bob got
involved with our outings program, he
spared no effort. He has been active
with the Wilderness Travel Course as an
instructor, leader and staff person since
1995. Bob was designated a Navigation
Examiner for the Leadership Training
Committee (LTC) in 2001. He further
supported LTC (and prospective leaders)
by acting as the assistant (evaluating)
leader on numerous provisional outings
in the past decade.
In 1998, Bob was appointed Outings
Chair of the PV-SB Group. In that
capacity, he ensured a steady supply
of new leaders and outings of both
quality and quantity for the group and
the Chapter. He guided us through
the diffi cult outings challenges of the
1998-2005 timeframe. Specifi cally, the
by Hersh Kelley, PV-SB Group Chair
requirement for waivers on all outings,
including conditioning hikes, and the
new National Leader Standards recently
enacted by the Club. He also oversaw the
establishment of international outings led
by the PV-SB Group beginning with a
highly successful trip to New Zealand in
2002 and continuing today.
Bob’s service to the community goes
well beyond his work with the Club. He
has been active with the Boy Scouts of
America since 1960 and continues to
be after almost half a century. He is a
volunteer tax preparer in the AARP tax
preparation for seniors program and he
develops computer systems (hardware
and software) for the handicapped.
We have a new Outings Chair, Terry
Bass, who will do an outstanding job.
However, that doesn’t mean that Bob can
be replaced. He is very much a one-of-akind
person; hard working, dedicated and
energetic. A man who has been our friend
for a long time now. And, he will remain
that, regardless of the titles that he retains
or changes.
I take this opportunity to acknowledge
and honor him for all his many years of
loyal service to the group. Bob, let me
speak for the group in thanking you for
all that you have given to us.
The Outdoor Guide
to the Palos Verdes
Peninsula
by Brad & Kristine Denton
This wonderful guidebook contains
over 50 trails on the Peninsula that
are separated into different categories for
easy use. Each trail comes with its own
map, bullet points describing distance,
diffi culty level and special details, as
well as a full trail description. This guide
also gives fantastic information on trail
etiquette and right of way, including
equestrian and biker recommendations,
as well as dangers to be aware of while
hiking. In addition, it offers wonderful
chapters about the Peninsula including
sport venues, parks, points of interest,
places of worship, local clubs and
organizations, as well as a short history
of this unique area.
As an extra bonus, the Outdoor Guide
comes with a large and colorful fold-out
map which is included in its own back
cover pocket. It shows the individual
trailheads described within the book,
parks, nature preserves, streets and more.
For anyone who enjoys the outdoors,
wants information about this local area,
or is looking for new things to do and
see, this book is a must. It truly has
something for everyone! Over 200 pages
with room for fi eld notes in the back, lots
of hand drawn maps, and great black and
white photos throughout.
The authors have lived in the South Bay
area for over 20 years; the last 5 years
in Rancho Palos Verdes. Hiking the
Peninsula trails together for years, they
have become supporters of the Palos
Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy, the
Audubon Society, and the Sierra Club.
Brad is originally from Portland, OR,
and had a love for the outdoors from an
early age. He is a hiker, bird watcher,
archer and a mountain climber having
spent quite a bit of time in the Sierras,
Yosemite and beyond.
Kristine was born in California, but grew
up in Minnesota. She moved back after
college to work in the entertainment
Desert Trails Bus Trip November 11-13, 2006
by Jaclyn Childers. Treasurer
Saturday, Nov. 11. When I arrived at
the pick-up location around 6:30am,
Rich Torres, our favorite bus driver was
already loading the bus. We left Redondo
Beach at 7am and after a short stop to
pick-up passengers in Orange County, we
headed up the I-15 with a full bus of 54
passengers. With the coolers fi lled with
juice and soft drinks by Jerry Trager and
Lois Vile, we were on our way to Nevada
We arrived at Red Rock Canyon at
11:30am and our fi rst hikes started
from Sandstone Quarry. Bob Beach and
Steve Skomeda in the Valley of Fire
Richard Pardi led the fast hike with 12
people going to Turtlehead Peak which
included some steep scrambling. The
second group led by Cindy Pardi and
Jerry Trager had a small amount of offtrail
on steep rock to reach Calico Tanks
through some gorgeous rock formations.
A reward for those who reached the top
industry as a script supervisor and
production manager. She became a
mother and has worked on local city
committees, worked for Barbara Dye
at the PVP Land Conservancy, and
volunteered her talent to help create
some of Rancho Palos Verdes’ TV Public
Service Announcements. She is also a
member of the Palos Verdes Peninsula
Chamber of Commerce.
local weather, tide tables, and you may
purchase the book there as well.
was a magnifi cent view of Las Vegas. It
was a great way to start off the trip.
After checking in at our motel in Las
Vegas, a group of 21 people went to the
Fremont Experience light show. Bob
reported the show was fantastic and
touchingly patriotic. Then, they went on
to see a live show at the Rio where most
of them caught beads being thrown by
the performers.
Sunday, Nov. 12. The bus loaded up
at 7:30am and we headed out for our
day’s adventures. Our fi rst stop was the
Lost City Museum in Overton, NV. For
more than 10,000 years, humans have
carved out a living from hard, rugged
Nevada terrain. From boom to bust, their
stories are preserved here in this museum
with displays of thousands of artifacts.
Then, we moved on to our afternoon
hikes in the spectacular colorful Valley
of Fire. The slower group hiked White
Dome loop. We then went by bus to
Mouse’s Tank, Bee Hive, and Atlatl
Rock to view petroglyphs. The fast hike
went on a cross-country adventure with
Bob and Richard. Due to extremely
bad weather this past year, the markers
we used previously were covered with
sand. Therefore, Bob took us on a new
adventure and we ended up hiking to
Mouse’s Tank. So ended another great
day of hiking.
Monday, Nov. 13. The bus left at 7:30am
and we arrived at Mohave National
Preserve at the Teutonia trailhead. The
[Continued from Page 2]
peak hikers took off fi rst, reached the peak, and returned while
the slower hikers went to the Teutonia Mines along the trail.
Then, we got back on the bus and the faster group was let out at
the Hole in the Wall trailhead near the Mid Hills campground,.
They did the 8 mile, one-of-a-kind hike ending up at Hole in
the Wall. Once there, they climbed on metal rings to get to the
top and out. It was a real highlight of the trip. The slower group
went with Donna to Mitchell Caverns. Those who didn’t do the
Caverns did short hikes around the Caverns area.
In summary, this was a GREAT TRIP! I highly recommend you
join us next year or try out one of the other holiday bus trips
during the year. Check the Foggy View for future trip dates.

Junk Mail
[Continued from Page 8]
- You made just one purchase from a retailer that conducts
business via a catalog and you’re on their mailing list for
life. Contact these companies and ask to be taken off their
mailing list.
- Don’t you hate it when some non-profi ts and magazine
companies send you multiple payment/donation due
reminders? Contact these companies and ask to be
sent only one annual invoice. Most of them have a way
of updating their database to indicate you don’t want
multiple reminders.
- When banks, utility companies, etc. offer paperless
billing systems, take them up on the offer. Those of you
who deal with mutual fund companies should sign up to
receive annual reports, the updated prospectus, and proxy
statements via email notifi cation.
Recycled Paper
PRINTED WITH
SOY INK

Reducing Paper in
your Mailbox
by Terry Bass, Outings Chair
Tired of all that mail you receive each day, much of
it unsolicited? How about the mail from fi rms you
belong/subscribe to but rarely read? Let’s assume
you are already doing a great job of recycling this paper
waste. But, think how much better it would be for the
environment (as well as your mail carrier) if you simply
eliminated this paper from ever hitting your mailbox.
Here are some techniques to help you eliminate this waste
(I know they work because I’ve used them myself).
The fi rst target for elimination is unsolicited mail
(advertisements) sometimes called junk mail. The Direct
Marketing Association (DMA) has a Mail Preference
Service “designed to assist consumers in decreasing the
amount of national non-profi t or commercial mail they
receive at home.” The names on their “do not mail” list
are supplied to mass mailers who have decided they do
not want to waste the expense of mail to those who are
not receptive to their marketing. The biggest category
here is fi nancial institutions such as banks and credit card
companies. It will cost you a dollar to get on this list via
a form either submitted online or mailed in. The form can
be accessed at:
http://www.dmaconsumers.org/consumerassistance.html
If you receive unsolicited pre-approved credit cards or
related offers, you can stop this (for up to 5 years or
permanently) by using a simple op-out feature that will
be honored by the three major consumer credit reporting
companies. You can do this either by phoning 888-567-
8688 or accessing www.optoutprescreen.com (some
browser security settings may alert you to a problem with
this website but just reply OK to continue).
Next, you should examine mail you receive because of
business you have conducted with various companies.
Before you toss mail into the recycle bin, ask yourself if
you are still interested in receiving it. If not, use their tollfree
numbers for Customer Support to get off their mailing
lists. Here are a few examples:
- Years ago, you took a trip with a tour operator and
they keep sending beautiful brochures of their current
offerings. Contact travel companies who send frequent/
large brochures and ask to be taken off their mailing list.
Use Internet access instead.
