Screeners also look for patients who are experiencing extreme pain or have deformities of the eye. These patients will be scheduled for surgery to remove the eye and replace it with a prosthetic eye. Sometimes patients cannot be helped with treatment or surgery, but they are given the opportunity for counselling with the Africa Mercy Crew. The eye team also distributes sunglasses to protect the eyes of the patients from the intense African sun and they distributed 717 pairs in the first two weeks. While screenings continue in Lomé, eye surgeries are already taking place on board the Africa Mercy as Mercy Ships delivers hope and healing to the blind. Togo Smiles Every morning at 8am, a dedicated group of dentists, dental assistants, a dental hygienist and translators set out across Lomé, Togo, to the dental clinic run by Mercy Ships. The clinic is a quick 25 minute drive through the city centre and has been named Round Point Clinic by the Africa Mercy dental team. The dental clinic addresses this problem in several ways. Dental screenings are held twice a week with an average turnout of about 250 potential patients. Dental Coordinators identify patients with a range of dental issues from simple cavities to large, deformity-causing abscesses. The dental teams work diligently every day extracting teeth, filling cavities and even constructing new teeth. It is estimated that several thousand people will be seen, most of whom will find relief from pain for the first time in their lives. Patients in the waiting area are also taught how to properly brush and care for their teeth, and they are given toothbrushes. Then their teeth are cleaned by 4 MARCH 2010

Beatrice Stoeckli, one of the patients, expressed her excitement at finally getting dental healing, “I didn’t know how I was going to get dental care, so I was praying. When I heard the name Mercy Ships, I said, the mercy of God is touching me.” Dental and Oral Diseases in Developing Nations Many people in developing countries have never had the privilege of seeing a dentist. Dental help is almost non-existent in much of West Africa, and in the other countries Mercy Ships visits, it is unaffordable for the majority of the population Statistics (source: WHO) • 60-90% of school children worldwide have dental cavities. •Severe periodontal (gum) disease, which may result in tooth loss, is found in 5-20% of middle-aged adults; the rate varies across geographical regions. • 40-50% of people who are HIV-positive have oral fungal, bacterial or viral infections, which often occur early in the course of HIV infection. •Oral disease is the fourth most expensive ailment to treat in most industrialised countries Bringing Hope and Healing Mercy Ships aims to prevent and reduce the effects of a lack of oral health care by providing dental treatment and dental hygiene education and training. Mercy Ships uses hospital ships com- plemented by mobile dental clinics to deliver free specialised health care to the world’s forgotten poor. New Life for Kossin Sixteen-year-old, Kossin Delou, spent four years of his life sheltered by his family and kept out of the public eye due to an enormous tumour that dominated the left side of his face. When the tumour first appeared, Kossin visited local hospitals in Lome, Togo, but his family could not afford the necessary surgery. So, the tumour, which started from Kossin’s upper jaw, continued to grow. It soon covered his eye, hindering his vision. As the insidious growth enlarged, Kossin’s life became more difficult. In fact, the children who were once his friends now ridiculed him on the streets and at school. He even felt like an outsider amongst his own siblings. His emotional turmoil intensified as his dream for his future began to fade away. Kossin wanted to study at a university to become a teacher. He wanted to enrich the lives of children with knowledge and love. His grotesque facial deformity would prevent him from pursuing his education. MARCH 2010 5
