LEGO Indiana Jones was a right hoot so we 

think it’s only right that the LEGO series gets 

another outing – especially so because in 

LEGO Batman, you get to see Gotham not 

just through the eyes of the Caped Crusader and his 

faithful sidekick Robin, but you also get to play a raft 

of classic Batman villains too! 

You’ll be dishing it out on the streets, on water 

and in the air, and you can get behind the controls of 

some fantastic vehicles too, including the fantastic

Since the last game, the 3rd Street Saints gang 

has all but collapsed. As their new leader, it’s up to 

you to recruit a new gang and crown yourself as the 

new stupendously-customisable daddy of the streets. 

Your enemies and the innocent will pay for this by 

being run over, mown down, blown to pieces and 

beaten up, which is more fun than ever thanks to an 

expanded melee system. 

This wondrous RPG sequel by Peter Molyneux

Three buttons represent different fighting styles, from

children, there’s no way to bring them back…

Four years ago, a little-known German 

developer called Crytek came from out of 

nowhere and blew us away with the PC 

first-person shooter Far Cry. Stranded in a 

mercenary-filled jungle, it had you setting traps, 

blowing up fuel dumps and shooting guards in huts 

from beneath the floorboards. In short, it was brilliant. 

Sporting a spanking new engine, the sequel has 

now expanded to take in consoles with a game that’s 

as thoughtful yet action-packed as ever. Far Cry 2 

drops you in the middle of a war-torn African state to 

track down and eliminate a weapons dealer who has 

been arming both sides. To achieve this, you must

It’s a huge safari – but you aren’t hunting animals… 

Yikes! The Locust have only gone and found a 

way to make giant emergence holes capable 

of destroying entire cities at once! Cue more 

large-scale battles, intense action and

a new skill-based matchmaking system groups

This is a real return to form for Sega’s little 

blue hedgehog as Sonic Unleashed mixes up 

the breakneck speed of the original 2D games 

with great big next-gen worlds. It does this by 

alternating between day and night levels. The daylight 

levels are classic side-scrolling zip-abouts, while 

the night levels plunge you into beautiful 3D. Sonic 

moves extremely fast, especially when you hit his 

coin-activated Sonic Boost. Indeed, most of the time 

you’re travelling so quickly you hardly have the time 

to admire the stunning scenery! 

You can avoid obstacles without losing speed by 

employing Sonic’s deft Quick Step, while using Speed 

BIG 

TROUBLE! 

Sonic’s new platformer is his best for ages… 

This frighteningly cute new game could be 

labelled a ‘physics-based co-operative 

platformer’, but that doesn’t come close to 

describing LittleBigPlanet’s charms. Using a 

combination of brains and teamwork, it has up to four 

players exploring a marvellously inventive world full of 

traps, obstacles and puzzles. Using intuitive controls 

that involve both frantic manipulation of analogue 

sticks and desperate tilting, you’ll be scrambling, 

swinging and grabbing onto everything – including 

each other – for dear life! 

That’s only the beginning, though. The fun 

really starts when you begin to build your own 

Drift allows him to take corners at high 

speed. Quick reflexes are required! 

In more good news, Sonic 

Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, a 

turn-based, combat-filled RPG set in 

the Sonic universe, is out now on DS.

Don’t just rock – record and storm the charts! ROCK 

Yes, it’s the first game in the Guitar Hero series 

to feature drum and microphone controllers 

for percussion and vocal parts – but that’s 

not all! Guitar Hero: World Tour is also the 

first band-in-a-box game that lets you write your 

own songs. This is done via an incredibly deep Music 

Creator. We say deep, but it’s as deep as you like, 

really. You can get totally obsessed with detail and 

production or just chuck together a tune in a few 

minutes – the choice is yours! In any case, a handy 

tutorial takes you through every step of the process. 

Once you’ve created a song, you can upload 

it to the GHTunes website, where the Guitar Hero 

The big news about this year’s version of 

PES is that Konami has wrestled the UEFA 

Champions League licence from EA, slotting 

the competition into the game as a new 

Tournament mode. What’s more, Konami has also 

done deals with the likes of Liverpool, Manchester 

United, Madrid and Barcelona, so now in the game 

you’ll see the names, faces and official kit of some 

of the best teams in the world. It all means that PES, 

already the most realistic soccer sim, is now catching 

up with the FIFA series in the glamour stakes too. 

Graphically, the game is an improvement on last 

year and the front end has also been revamped to

Evolve a creature from a single cell to a space-going race… 

From the creator of The Sims comes this 

incredibly ambitious game in which 

you control not just a family or city but 

an entire species, from tiny single-cell 

critters to space-faring rulers. Sound like a 

complicated strategy game? Well, it may be big, 

but Spore is easy to get into and it’s a great laugh.

over the planet. Finally, your species launches into 

the big, wide galaxy to dominate all others… 

By going online, you can upload your races 

and also download those that other people have 

created. In this way you can fill your game’s galaxy 

with civilisations from players all around the world, 

and so as the Spore community expands, so will 

the variety of creatures, crafts and places you 

can discover. Now let’s look at the five phases…

Tidepool phase 

At the start, your critter is barely a microscopic 

blob. It’s up to you whether you want to eat greens 

or meat. Either way, you swim around a tidal pool 

searching for food while avoiding predators. As 

play progresses, you’ll mate and be introduced to 

a basic creature creator that lets you spend DNA 

points on things such as mouths and spikes. 

Creature phase 

After munching enough flesh or veggies, you can 

hit the beach and use a full creature creator to 

evolve in a colourful 3D world. The possibilities 

are endless. Tweak your torso; add legs, arms and 

hands; or stick on defensive or offensive weapons. 

Take the social path and you’ll perform simple 

social gestures. Take the violent route and you can 

destroy nests and make other creatures extinct! 

Tribal phase 

You could call this the ‘Society’ phase – you give 

your critters clothes and tools and you must also 

befriend or destroy five other races. As you’d hope, 

it’s great fun having a scrap, but if you finish off a 

species, a more advanced one replaces them. 

Civilization phase 

The goal here is to gain control of the entire planet. 

You begin by building roads and buildings. As your 

city develops, you can contact other cities. You can 

also build aircraft, ships and even submarines, but 

what will your civilisation be like? Will you trade, 

embrace religion or develop a super-weapon? 

Space phase 

In this final phase, you’re given a customisable 

space ship and a full universe to explore and 

conquer. Races on some planets will welcome you 

but others will greet you with unbridled hostility, 

forcing you to build alliances and join 

forces with other species to crush them. 

Eventually you even gain the ability to dive 

in and out of wormholes. Yep, it’s time for 

you to boldly go where no creature has 

gone before...

Fallout 3 is going to be one of the 

biggest releases of the year and 

little wonder. Bethesda games has 

taken its classic RPG series Fallout 

and given it the Oblivion treatment, treating 

us to a blackly comic RPG with mutants, 

giant ants and a gripping story set in a 

desolate but stunning world. 

If you aren’t familiar with the series, 

Fallout is set in a world that has been 

devastated by The Great War, a nuclear 

conflict that occurred in the year 2077, lasted 

less than two hours and turned the United 

States into an irradiated ruin. The survivors 

of this war live in the Vaults. The vaults were 

originally designed as huge bomb shelters but 

also became sociological experiments. For 

example, some vaults housed only men, while 

others were designed to be opened just six 

months after they were sealed. 

Fallout 3 takes place 30 years after the 

events of Fallout 2. You play a young inhabitant 

of Vault 101, which is under the wreckage of 

Washington DC. This Vault has been sealed for 

200 years, until your father – voiced by Liam 

Neeson – mysteriously leaves. You then decide 

to leave the safety of the Vault yourself and set 

out into the barren and dangerous landscape 

to find out where he’s gone and why. 

While the game is a first-person shooter, 

in many ways it also gives a classic RPG 

experience that can be tailored to suit your 

playing style. You can play in a third-person 

style if you want and as you level-up, you 

allocate points into various skill sets. These 

skills are decided early on in the game – 

during your childhood in the Vault – when 

you decide your character’s traits: strength, 

perception, endurance, charisma, intelligence, 

agility and luck. You can then add ‘Perks’ 

to your character to make your hero or 

heroine more skilled in certain areas, such 

as handguns, melee attacks, explosives or 

sneaking and lock picking. Then, when you’re 

19 years old, the game starts in earnest… 

Because events begin underground, as 

in Oblivion, stepping out into the world above 

is quite something. This world is no Cyrodiil,

Capitol punishment 

though. Visually, the game is a class above 

Oblivion and in place of fields and forests, 

you’re treated to smashed buildings, twisted 

metal and grimy retro-future interiors. 

Amid the desolation, you’ll meet odd 

companions and lots of strange characters 

who are very interactive. What you do affects 

how others react to you – your actions have 

consequences in this world. 

Of course, you’ll also meet lots of mutated 

enemy monstrosities too, including many that 

return from the previous games – giant ants, 

death squads and radscorpions included. 

How do you deal with such critters? Well, 

Fallout 3 takes the series’ turn-based battles 

into real time. A Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting 

System lets you pause and zoom in on an 

enemy to select an individual body part to 

target and this can have some interesting 

results. Shoot an ant’s antennae and it will go 

berserk and fall on its fellows. Meanwhile, a 

head shot will explode the brains of hulking 

Super Mutants. Nice! 

As well as first-person action, all this can 

be done very effectively with the third-person 

camera option, which has a Resident Evil 4 

over-the-shoulder-style perspective. 

Alongside your weapons, you have your 

Pip-Boy 3000, which is a wrist-mounted 

device that allows access to stats, goals, items 

and an in-game radio. It’s also your Geiger 

counter. The more radiation you take, the 

more your stats drop. In fact, you’ll eventually 

die without your radiation medicine. Drinking 

water gives you temporary help, but if it’s 

contaminated, it will just raise your rad levels 

even further. Oops! 

Immersive, eye-popping and ingrained 

with dark humour, this stunning apocalyptic 

RPG will have you popping your radiation pills 

while you unravel its twisting and gripping 

story well into the winter.

the attack fast. Long spears are useful. 

Floor 28: aculeus Suit 

Guard Break attack at least twice. 

Try Yun-Seong’s Avenging Claws. For other 

characters, try moves with a blue-circled GB.

Try Mitsurugi’s Triple Steel. You have to press 

the horizontal and vertical attack buttons 

simultaneously and then hit the vertical attack 

again just as the second blow lands. 

Floor 32: Vane Mask 

Perform a low throw. 

These are performed against crouching 

opponents. Cassandra’s Seraphim Cyclone 

is one example. She, Astaroth, Xianghua 

and Rock have several. 

Floor 33: battle Dress 


Siegfried’s Thrust Throw, for instance. 

Look for moves with AT circled. 

Floor 34: Power Gem 

Perform Guard Impact more than three times. 

Keep guarding, or customise a character with 

Auto Impact A.

Start with your favourite character. If they die, 

this doesn’t count as switching.

Defeat all enemies with a Critical Finish.

A time limit plus opponents with Nullify Ring Out 

and Grapple Break makes this a particularly tough 

floor to master. Get Siegfried out and keep Flap 

Jacking your opponents if they’re near the edge; 

Over Toss if you are. 

Floor 39: Kingfisher Greaves 

Clear the stage without changing position. 

To be sure, avoid moves that require you to 

move the analogue stick. 

Floor 40: Deer Head 


Once more, hit ’em with the Apprentice’s 

Levitation Combo when they’re in mid-air, or 

try Amy’s Stocatta Rampage Crescendo. 

Floor 41: Minotaur 

Perform five or more Just Inputs. 

Use Mitsurugi’s Triple Steel. 

Floor 42: Demonic Gloves 

Clear the stage without letting any of your 

opponents invoke a skill. 

Keep attacking Zasalamel so he won’t get 

a chance to use his HP burst. 

Floor 43: Iron Shell repel Gem 

Perform an over-the-back throw. 

Combine Ivy’s Embrace of Guilt or Embrace 

of Lust with a throw. 

Floor 44: War cloak 

Clear the stage with no Ring Out from either party. 

Stay away from those edges. 

Floor 45: Tiger lily Kabuto 

Defeat enemies without equipping any skills. 

There are some hard enemies here. Repeating 

Siegfried’s Flap Jack and Over Toss dishes out the 

damage, as does slashing away with Yun-Seong’s 

Avenging Claws.

Once more, follow the steps for Floor 45.

This is simple… except your enemies have 

Invisibility, so grab anything you bump into!

Lytham St Annes’ Under 7s football team has Jon 

Doyle, of CHIPS Lytham St Annes, to thank for 

their smart kit. Jon, whose CHIPS store is on The 

Crescent, was only too pleased to help out with 

sponsorship when he was asked to help the lads 

and there’s no mistaking the CHIPS name on their 

smart green-and-white strip. 

The boys have been training together for the 

last two years and the squad is now 20-strong. 

Over the summer, there have been a number of 

tournaments along the Flyde Coast and the team 

has been taking part and doing extremely well. 

Among the squad of budding Beckhams, 

eight are training at the Manchester United 

Development Centre in Blackpool and one is at 

the Liverpool Development Centre. 

The youngsters love every minute of their 

time on the pitch and they really are the envy 

of all the kids around for having such a cool and 

generous sponsor.

Stephanie, who attends Highworth Grammar

Mews since the store opened and she’s a great 

RPG fan. Her favourite game of all time is Final

Stephen Osborne boost the coffers 

of a Stoke on Trent hospice. 

Stephen was so impressed with 

the care given to his nan, Irene 

Osborne, in her final days at the 

Douglas Macmillan Hospice, he 

decided to show his gratitude by 

raising funds for the charity in shi 

store, and with his customers’ kind 

help he managed a grand total of 

£112 in memory of Irene. 

“Douglas Macmillan Hospice 

cared for my Nan and gave her 

dignity and comfort in 2006. The 

work it does is fantastic and I 

am delighted to help them,” said 

Stephen who is pictured handing

Douglas Macmillan Hospice.

swimmer and likes football video 

games. Obviously, he also likes to 

draw in his spare time too! 

LOnGtOn CriCket CLUB 

Generous Steve Osborne, of CHIPS Longton, was 

only too happy to dig deep when a local cricket club 

asked him for help. 

Forsbrook Cricket Club’s great success on 

the field meant they had moved up through the 

divisions and they wanted to make sure they 

looked the part on the field. 

Steve was approached by Kris Hughes, who 

coaches the junior sides and plays for Forsbrook 

First team, and was delighted to sponsor the team. 

They have now been kitted out in smart yellow 

and purple tracksuits with CHIPS emblazoned 

across the chest. 

The guys are pictured prior to playing a 20/20 

cup competion against local rivals Woore and 

Longton. Forsbrook won against Woore, but lost 

against a very strong Longton Side. 

Steve’s generosity doesn’t stop with the First 

Team. During his visit to the club the under 11s 

were delighted to receive CHIPS vouchers, demo 

games, bionicles masks and T-Shirts from Steve, 

whose store is on The Strand, Longton.
