Haringey programme of events
October 2010
Lynne Featherstone
MP for Hornsey and Wood Green,
and Parliamentary Under-Secretary
of State responsible for Equalities
and Criminal Information
Black History Month is here again -
another absolutely fantastic
opportunity to celebrate the rich and
varied contribution of black men and
women to our Borough and our
culture at large.
This year we focus on the
achievements and character of a
much loved and respected man -
Bernie Grant. In the ten years since
his death, Bernie’s legacy continues
to live on, and Black History Month
2010 allows us to reflect on
everything he achieved, and the
inspirational figure he was - and
continues to be - to a generation of
young black men and women.
The whole array of events on offer
this year - from the art to the theatre
to the workshops - provide an
astonishing array of different cultural,
historical and artistic experiences.
Black History Month is truly a jewel
in the Haringey calendar, and every
year it never fails to impress. I hope
you enjoy it as much as I will.
David Lammy MP
Member of Parliament for
Tottenham
It is an honour, once again, to
introduce Haringey’s Black History
Month Guide. This year sees the
10th anniversary of the sad and
premature death of Bernie Grant.
Bernie was an inspiration - he was
one of the first members of the
Black community to sit in
Parliament, smashing the glass
ceiling so that the next generation of
black men and women could.
One of the most remarkable aspects
of Bernie’s character was his ability
to understand the importance of
history and heritage in entrenching a
sense of identity. In an increasingly
materialistic world, obfuscated by
brand names and urban street
culture, it is easy to forget what
makes us special amongst an
increasingly diverse crowd of people.
He understood that if you don’t
know who you are, you can’t know
where you are going and it was his
campaigning and persistence that
brought us a Black History Month in
the UK with recognition across all
communities, not just the Black one.
Indeed, this month may turn out to
be one of Bernie’s most important
legacies. History is not just a
moment to acknowledge and reflect
on the sacrifices, struggles and
triumphs of our ancestors, but to
appreciate the lessons for the
struggles of the present and future.
The programme for this month
reflects this. I’ve been inspired by
the increasing number of wonderful
individuals and community groups I
have come across who have worked
tirelessly to bring people together
from all ages and backgrounds
throughout the Borough. The last
year and the coming months will no
doubt prove challenging for Haringey
- but it is at this time that we can
draw inspiration from the actions of
those that suffered harder and for
longer and eventually triumphed.
Although Haringey has always
suffered more than others from
economic poverty, we have never
been impoverished in terms of our
people or of our culture - this month
is our chance to prove that.
I pay special tribute to Bernie’s wife,
Sharon, who has been central to
putting together this month’s
programme and has been
instrumental in preserving his legacy.
I wish you all an interesting and
inspiring Black History Month.
Cllr Claire Kober
Leader of Haringey Council
I am delighted to introduce the
fantastic programme of events
scheduled for Black History Month.
This year especially we are marking
10 years since the death of Bernie
Grant who did so much for
Haringey. Bernie had a strong sense
of his heritage and was passionate
about ensuring the experiences and
achievements of individual
communities were marked and
celebrated.
We are lucky to live in a borough in
which so many cultures coexist, and
the wealth of events planned over
the coming weeks give us a chance
to celebrate the achievements and
ambitions of all that is black culture.
There really is something for
everybody, from jewellery making
workshops, to family fun days and
seminars on the impact of Obama’s
election. I hope that hundreds of you
will join us to enjoy this festival of
Black History.
Cllr Bernice Vanier
Cabinet Member for Safer
Community and Cohesion
Each year Black History Month
provides an opportunity for all
members of the community to share
experiences and learn about the rich
culture and history of black people,
and the contribution they have made
to our culturally diverse community.
This is important because in the
main black history is blotted out or
re-written to suit others. One month
is insufficient to redress this balance
but it gives the chance to spotlight
black history and promote
understanding and harmony.
This year in particular is of special
significance as seventeen African
countries celebrate their Golden
Jubilee independence anniversary. It
is also the 10th anniversary of the
death of Bernie Grant, the first black
leader of Haringey Council and MP
for Tottenham from 1987 to his
death in 2000. The focus of the
booklet is on his life and
achievements.
The programme this month includes
a plethora of activities and thought
provoking events. There is
something for all ages and taste.
4
Eddie Griffith
Mayor of Haringey
It is a delight and privilege to be
asked to pen the preface to this
edition. The co-incidence of being a
Mayor from the black community
adds a certain poignancy to the
occasion.
It is important that we in Haringey
acknowlege and celebrate the
achievements of members of the
black community whose sojourn
dates back many decades, indeed as
far back as World War 2 and possibly
earlier.
Worldwide black people over the
centuries have made their mark in the
fields of science, mathematics, health
and the like. Inventors such as
Thomas Adams, George Alcorn,
Howard Aiken and Andrew Alford
have made significant contributions
which have revolutionised the way we
do things today.
This year's programme is a reminder
that in our midst there is a diversity of
talent, skills and knowledge of which
we can be proud. It is also ten years
since the untimely death of our own
local hero, the larger than life Bernie
Grant, who served the constituency of
Tottenham as Member of Parliament
for some thirteen years. Bernie was
Haringey’s Black History Month
2010 programme aims to
celebrate the rich art and culture
of the Black community by
providing a diversity of events
across the Borough. The 2010
brochure particularly focuses on
the 10 year anniversary of Bernie
Grant’s death, and aims to
celebrate the former MP’s life and
achievements.
Among attractions will be
exhibitions, talks and seminars -
for all ages.
Key exhibitions include a Bernie
Grant roadshow at local libraries
and the Bernie Grant Arts Centre,
including a seminar by the MP’s
official biographer Onyekachi
Wambu.
There will also be a boroughwide
art exhibition at various locations
across Haringey - entitled Sisters in
well loved and respected and a man
of profound integrity. I had the good
fortune to have known him as a friend
and colleague when he served at
Haringey as its leader and can testify
to his relentless energy, commitment
and passion, legacies which remain in
the mind to this present day.
In the next few weeks we will be
treated to an array of cultural
delicacies which will enrich the mind
and stimulate our natural propensities
to add to our intellectual growth.
Sprit - featuring the work of
contemporary black female artists.
Nicola Green’s thought-provoking
exhibition House-Slave, Field-Slave
will trace the struggle for the
abolition of slavery as commemorated
in the borough in 2007 - before this
locally-based, nationally-respected
portrait artist shows her work at the
International Slavery Museum in
Liverpool in 2011.
Called Black History Month Now the
programme celebrates present-day
achievements and successes - and
shows how these draw on the
community’s rich heritage in the
borough.
Black History Month in the year 2010
promises to be a memorable one and
I for one am already smacking my lips
in anticipation of the cultural delights
which will be served up in the weeks
ahead.
Black History Month 2010 could be
the most exciting to date but we all
have to play our individual parts by
joining the celebrations whenever and
wherever they are held.
Have a happy, enjoyable, rewarding
and stimulating Black History Month.
Bernie Grant: a reflection
On 18 April 2000 thousands of
people lined the streets of Haringey
to follow the last journey of a
charismatic political leader. Bernie
Grant had been the Labour leader of
Haringey Council during the politically
turbulent mid 1980s and went on to
become the Member of Parliament for
Tottenham in 1987 until his death in
2000. The mass funeral attended by
some 4000 people at Alexandra Palace
made this one of the largest ever public
tributes to a black person in Britain.
There was a strong sense that a strong
and brave voice had been silenced.
And so it had. Bernie Grant, the most
outspoken black political leader in
recent times, had been a force for
racial and social justice for over three
decades, and was a champion and
friend to many, in Haringey and far
beyond. In making the transition from
left wing activist to Parliamentary office,
the story of his life mirrors the changes
that the country was going through, as
it attempted to come to terms with
becoming a multi-racial society after
decades of being an imperial power.
Born into a family of teachers on 17
February 1944 in Guyana, Bernie Grant
left for England aged 19, to join his
mother who was one of the very few
black teachers in Haringey. By 1978 he
became a full time Area Officer for the
National Union of Public Employees
(NUPE), responsible for its local
authority and health workers. Bernie
Grant then founded the Black Trades
Unionists Solidarity Movement, and by
1983 worked for it full time.
He also became involved in the local
community, especially around
discrimination in education, and was
elected a councillor for Bruce Grove in
1978. He quickly gained the respect of
other councillors, and by 1985 he had
become the Leader of Haringey
Council, responsible for its ethnically
diverse population of 250,000 people.
He was the first ever black person to
hold such a position, or in fact to hold
any real political power, in Europe.
Equal opportunities policies and
practices are now commonplace but
this was not so in the 1980. Bernie
Grant was a pioneer of equalities for all
and insisted that Haringey Council’s
jobs and services should be equally
available to everyone.
His uncompromising stance on these
issues brought him an unwelcome
national fame. The Tottenham
electorate voted him into Parliament in
1987, as one of the first black MPs in
modern times. Famously, ever
conscious of his ancestral roots, he
entered his first State Opening of
Parliament in African clothing, attracting
outrage from some quarters - but huge
respect from others.
Bernie Grant had built up credibility
with a range of communities who felt
excluded from politics and from society
in general. Migrants, black people,
pensioners, alienated youth - all sought
his support. He brought to Parliament a
wealth of political experience, and
quickly set about using his new status
to take those issues forward locally,
nationally and internationally.
He came to be seen as the unofficial
‘Minister for Black People’, and
approached by individuals, British
ministers and politicians, and even
governments in Africa and elsewhere,
who sought his advice or influence. He
was a great orator, and his public
speaking skills were in great demand
both in this country and abroad. He
travelled widely, especially to Africa
and to his beloved Caribbean region.
In 1990 he accompanied the African-
American former presidential
candidate, Reverend Jesse Jackson to
South Africa, greeting Nelson Mandela
on the day of his release after 22
years imprisonment. And noting the
problems that black people
encountered across Europe, he
founded the Standing Conference on
Racism in Europe in 1990.
Another important initiative was the
Africa Reparations Movement (ARM) in
Britain in 1993. As chair of ARM, he
stressed the importance of history and
heritage for African diaspora peoples:
‘Only if we understand our past can we
as Black People move forward in the
future. We must demand
compensation for the biggest crime in
history – the colonisation and
enslavement of our people.’
For 13 years, he used the floor of the
House of Commons to further his
numerous campaigns against injustice
at home and abroad. Throughout
however, he was closely involved in his
Tottenham constituency, and increased
his majority at two subsequent general
elections. Away from the public gaze
he was renowned for his empathy with
the many who approached him with
their personal difficulties. Queues at his
MP’s advice surgery were legendary, as
was his passionate advocacy for
victims of injustice. Bernie Grant’s last
big battle was to work towards
establishing a dedicated black arts and
cultural facility in his Tottenham
constituency. His vision was fulfilled
with The Bernie Grant Arts Centre
opening in 2007. Sadly Bernie died on
8 April 2000 at the age of 56. He is
buried in Tottenham Cemetery.
Official and public debates about
racism, social equity and cultural
identity were undoubtedly the richer for
Bernie Grant’s sustained, committed
contribution to political, socioeconomic
and cultural life both in
Britain and abroad. With his finely
honed sense of social justice, his belief
in equality for all peoples, and his pride
in the history, culture and achievements
of black diaspora peoples, successive
generations will benefit from Bernie
Grant’s work for many years to come.
