Safety and Quality Control in Depot works of CMR Project
SAFETY:- At Chennai Metro Rail Project work sites, at most importance is given to
Safety. We have achieved 65.2% in Monthly Audit Report Score ( MARS) in September
2011. Positive approach towards safety by the contractor has been evident by conducting
external trainings like ‘Working at height’, ‘AIDS awareness programme’ from M/s. Red
Cross Society, Internal trainings like ‘Material Handling’, ‘Awareness training for Occupational
Health Risk’ ‘Method statement briefing for all works’, monthly safety meetings etc;
As it is said “Safety is a word with meaning; it is up to us to make it work”. At CMRL depot-
the Consultant and the Contractor make it to work each day as it goes.
AIDS Awareness Training for workers
Depot has been frequently visited by visitors from different streams, to name a few:students
from IIT Madras, Chennai & Students from Musaliar College of Engineering,
Kerala, etc. For all personnel’s at site, be it visitors or staff, are inducted in safety norms
and General Consultants. An independent audit wing of General Consultants also established to
audit the quality of works.
Earth filling & Ground Improvement works:
As per the scope of work a huge earth filling work about 4 lakhs cum is involved in the Koyambedu
work including ground improvement work. The contract provides details of quality control
tests to be conducted for selecting the fill material as well as for earth filling work. The samples of
fill material are tested for particle size distribution, liquid limit, plasticity index, coefficient of uniformity,
free swelling index, sulphate content, optimum moisture content, and maximum dry density
as per PQP. The samples are tested for the moisture content and relative compactions
(FDD) as per contract provisions.
* 294 samples from 23 quarries have been tested for fill material to ascertain the suitability of
the soil as per specifications;
* 3004 samples of soil have been tested for FDD (Field Dry Density) to ensure 98/95% of
MDD as the case may be;
* The settlement of the soil filling is monitored by measuring the settlement through the settlement
marker installed at prescribed spacing; and
* Similarly the pore water pressure of the water in the soft day layer is measured by means of
Piezometers.
Concrete for piling work
Translocation of Deer's with care by CMRL
On taking over the land of TANUVAS at Nandanam by
CMRL, major steps were taken to translocate 32 deer’s living in
Poultry Research Station, Nandanam to Aringer Anna Zoological
Park, Vandalur and Guindy National Park, Guindy with the help
of Tamil Nadu Forest Department.
During the course of translocation, first a study was
made on the behaviour of the animal in the location. After the
study, all the drinking spot for deer's inside the campus were
closed . A high fencing was made in different places, deer's were
given food and water by the staffs of forest department regularly
so as to get friendly with the animal. This helped to trap them
easily .
Wooden trap boxes were made to trap the deers for
transporting . Food was kept in the wooden boxes which attracted
the animal and one by one all were trapped and translocated
to the new location.
Throughout the operation, vetenary doctors were present.
Medical tests were conducted to see whether they are strong
enough for journey during translocation. Ambulance was also
present to treat the animal if they get injured during these operations.
This operation took about 4 months. CMRL funded the
whole amount required for the translocation of these 32 deer's to
the Zoo authority of Tamil Nadu. This is the first time in Tamil
Nadu, such a large group of deer's were translocated by CMRL
with 100% success and care.
