Sun protection sorted
5* Sun Protection in 5 Minutes
Follow these golden rules to keep safe
in the sun
1
3
4
Choose a high SPF and 5* UVA protection
SPF + 5* UVA = The whole story
in sun protection
SPF only protects you from sunburn whilst the
star rating system measures protection from
UVA rays, which contribute to long-term, deep
down skin damage and skin ageing.
It’s essential to protect yourself against both so
choose 5-Star UVA rated sun protection such as Boots Soltan
and a suitable SPF for you.
2
Apply properly
Apply enough sun protection to liberally cover
your body, about 2-3 tablespoons or 35ml for
total adult body coverage. Reapply regularly
too (at least every two hours) and look out for
extended wear products such as the Soltan
Once range for up to eight hours SPF protection.
Seek shade
Avoid direct sunlight during the hottest part of
the day when UV levels are highest, from 11am
to 3pm in the UK.
Keep covered up
As well as wearing sun protection, it’s important to cover up
when possible in the sun. Keep your head covered with a
hat and protect eyes with sunglasses with a UV400 stamp
available at Boots opticians. Look out for specialist ‘sunsafe’
swimwear too, with inbuilt UV protection such as the miniclub
range for children available at Boots.
5 Don’t be caught out by
cloudy weather
UV rays pass through cloud and even a light
covering of certain types of cloud can actually
magnify UV intensity on the ground.
So wear sun protection whenever you’re out and about in
the summer, whether home or abroad.
SPF + 5* UVA = The whole story
in sun protection
Many of us choose our sun protection based purely on the
SPF, but that’s only half the story. SPF only measures protection
against burning which comes mainly from UVB rays. But around
95% of UV light is UVA and its rays penetrate more deeply
into the skin than UVB, causing long-term skin damage that
your body does not fully repair. There are no health benefits
associated with UVA rays but there is a growing belief that
they are associated with certain harmful effects including
skin cancer. The UVA Star Rating System ranks levels of UVA
protection; since 2004 as well as UVB protection, each and
every product in the Soltan range has been awarded five out of
five stars – the highest level of UVA protection and higher than
many other brands. So you can rest assured that you and your
family are getting the best available protection.
Top five tips
for a safe beach summer
Surf Life Saving GB is a charity of 5,000 volunteers helping to
make our beaches safer and more enjoyable for everyone.
Follow these tips to keep safe on the beach this summer.
1
2
3
4
5
Know your flags
Safest, patrolled bathing area, always swim
between the flags
Designated area for surfboards, kayaks and other
non-powered craft. Never swim or bodyboard here
Do not enter the water
Offshore winds. Avoid using inflatables
Always swim on a lifeguarded beach
The beach can seem a safe haven for fun but waves, rips
and tides can be the cause of many emergencies. Ask
your Beach Lifeguards for advice.
Watch out for rips
Rips are strong currents that can quickly take swimmers
out of their depth. Ask your Beach Lifeguards to show
you the safest place to swim. If you get caught in a rip try
to stay calm. Alert your Beach Lifeguards by raising one
arm and shouting for help.
Don’t let go
If you get in trouble while body boarding or surfing, stay
with your craft as it will keep you afloat, stay calm and
alert your Beach Lifeguards.
Look after your beach
Keep it a haven for people and creatures. Take your litter
home, clean up after your dog and look but don’t touch
the wildlife - leave only footprints.
