(1) Atomization
There are many methods for metal/metal oxide powders
production. Atomization is one of the more popular and
readily available techniques in the market. The idea of
atomization is that it produces a liquid-metal stream by
injecting molten metal through a small orifice. The
liquid-metal stream will then be broken up by relatively
strong jets of inert gas/air or water, known as gas and
water atomization, respectively, depending on the
properties of the powders desired. The size and shape of
the powders depend on the temperature of the molten
metal, rate of flow, nozzle size and jet characteristics.
Despite the fact that water results in a slurry of metal
powder and liquid at the bottom of the atomization
chamber, and the powders must be dried before they can
be used, water allows more rapid cooling effect for the
powders to be produced and hence generally results in
higher production rates. On the other hand, gas
atomization usually produces more spherical powders.
(2) Blending (Mixing)
Blending or mixing of powders aims to ensure the
uniformity of mechanical properties throughout the
material part. Even when a single metal is being subjected
to atomization, the powders may vary significantly in size
and shape, hence they must be blended to obtain
uniformity from part to part. Powder blending must be
implemented under controlled conditions in order to
avoid contamination or deterioration. Powders can be
mixed in air or inert atmospheres to avoid oxidation, or in
liquids which act as lubricants and make the mix more
uniform. A typical process of atomization and blending is
shown in Figure 22.
(3) Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP)
Figure 23 shows the schematic process of HIP. The
container for HIP is generally made of a high melting point
sheet metal and the pressurizing medium is
high-temperature inert gas or a vitreous (glasslike) fluid.
HIP process usually undergoes conditions in pressures as
high as 100 – 300 MPa and under temperature of 1200
O C. The main advantage of HIP is its capability in
producing compacts having almost 100% density, decent
metallurgical bonding of the particles and great
mechanical properties. It can close internal porosity of the
metal and improve properties of metal-alloys. The reasons
why isostatic pressing is required is because of the
uniformity of pressure from all directions and the absence
of die-wall friction in such a way that it produces dense
compacts of practically uniform grain structure, toughness
and density, i.e. isotropic properties. Secondly, HIP is
capable of handling large compacts of metal and ceramic
materials.
Major HIP equipment suppliers include Avure
Technologies (US), Pressure Technology Inc. (US),
Bodycote Heat Treatment (UK), etc.
Avure
Bodycote
Heat Treatment
