Dr. Joel Hughes, Psychology Department, Kent State University, has been awarded a federally funded project entitled<br />

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction for High Blood Pressure (R21 AT002698-01 A2), which is called the “SMiLE Study”<br />

for advertising and recruiting purposes. The SMiLE study is an investigation <strong>of</strong> mindfulness meditation to treat prehypertension,<br />

and was funded by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine for $545,000 over 2<br />

years 2006<br />

Dr. John Gunstad, Psychology Department, Kent State University, has received a $60,000 grant from the Ohio Board <strong>of</strong><br />

Regents to fund a study which will be implemented through the Institute. Smart Heart Study: Cognitive Benefits <strong>of</strong>


Cardiac Rehabilitation The study will examine possible mechanisms for improved cognitive performance in cardiac<br />

rehabilitation participants.<br />
