hungry, building homes for Habitat for Humanity, or comforting the elderly. The Cultural Immersion
program offers the chance to live, learn and work amidst other cultures. The Cooperative Education
program, available for all majors, is a way for students to gain valuable, paid career experience while
validating their choice of a major.
Student-athletes are among the Mount’s most active leaders on campus. Competing in the Heartland
Collegiate Athletic conference, the Mount fields more than 20 NCAA Division III sports teams. Students
also participate in 40 student-run clubs and organizations including Student Government Association and
Cincinnati Spotlights
Students of the College of Mount St. Joseph greatly benefit from the
rich heritage and traditions of Cincinnati. While the College is situated
15 minutes west of downtown, employment, arts and entertainment are
never too far away.
Numerous Fortune 500 and Fortune 1000 companies are headquartered in
Cincinnati. Procter & Gamble, The Kroger Company, and Fifth Third Bank,
among others, contribute to Cincinnati’s foundation while Cincinnati
Children’s Hospital Medical Center is among the nations’ top children’s
hospitals. Mount Cooperative Education students are hired by more
than 100 hospitals, businesses and nonprofit organizations of Greater
Cincinnati.
Boasting a vibrant commitment to the arts, Cincinnatians enjoy the
Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati Art Museum, Aronoff Center,
Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, Music Hall, and a varied supply of art
galleries. Mount students often incorporate Cincinnati’s art exhibits and
performances into their studies.
Cincinnati knows sports. The Cincinnati Reds, the Major League Baseball
team, and the Cincinnati Bengals, of the National Football League, provide
competition, entertainment and emotion for the city’s sports fans. Co-op
and volunteer opportunities with these organizations are often available to
Mount students. Cincinnati is also home to the Flying Pig Marathon every
May and the Master’s and Women’s Open tennis tournament every August.
Historical neighborhoods such as Mount Adams, Clifton and Over-the-
Rhine make good architectural and cultural adventures, while additional
COLLEGE OF MOUNT ST. JOSEPH
Mission in Action
The College of Mount St. Joseph is a Catholic academic community
grounded in the spiritual values and vision of its founders, the Sisters
of Charity. At the heart of the Mount’s mission and heritage is an
emphasis on ethical leadership through service. Ethical leadership
celebrates the return of virtue, character and personal honor to their
rightful place as the foundation of education. This commitment inspires
the College’s interdisciplinary liberal arts and professional curricula, which
equips students to live with integrity, to promote justice, and to seek the
truth in their professions and communities.
Service opportunities complement academics and student life while
fostering a culture of learning informed by charity. In the Service Learning
Program, students apply classroom knowledge while volunteering in social
and environmental settings to feed the hungry, build homes for Habitat for
Humanity and comfort the elderly. The Cultural Immersion program offers
the chance to live, learn and work amidst other cultures. In serving others,
students cultivate a greater understanding of social problems, an appreciation
for the cultural diversity of other people, as well as a commitment to
volunteerism and an understanding of its connection to citizenship.
Campus Ministry infuses all aspects of faith into the Mount’s culture and
celebrates spiritual exploration. Faith sharing programs, Mass, retreats, and
other planned events help awaken and deepen an awareness of God’s love
and presence within the campus community. Inspired by Catholic social
teaching, Campus Ministry encourages students to identify their gifts and
to use them for the common good through activities such as Pizza and
Ponder, Homelessness Awareness Week, and 30-Hour Famine.

2013 Season Outlook
The Lions are coming off of a sub .500 season, including a 4-12 mark in
conference, which put them into an eighth place tie in the conference.
The Lions started the conference season in 2012 with a 4-3 mark, but
suffered a losing streak that kept them from making the HCAC Tournament.
Head Coach Beth Goderwis returns this spring to lead the team from the
dugout. She enters her 12th season overall as head coach for the Mount.
Prior to that, Goderwis was a Lions’ assistant coach.
While the Lions finish was not where Goderwis wanted it to be in 2012,
she believes that her young team gained valuable experience playing
through a tough season. She’s hoping that after a solid off-season of work
by her team, numerous talented and experienced returners back for 2013,
and a solid group of first-year recruits coming in, the team is ready to turn
around their results. Their goals as usual are to finish in the top four in the
conference, and earn a bid to the HCAC Tournament.
Goderwis believes that if the Lions use the experience they earned last
season, and cut back on mistakes, as well as improve in other areas, they
will compete in every game this spring.
“I really think if we clean up our errors, by cutting those in half, and
work on our slugging percentage we have a very good chance of making the
conference tournament’’ Goderwis states. “We were very young last year and
now we are a year older. I really think we will be a much better team. We
had 12 freshmen last year, and sometimes we had seven freshmen on the
field at one time.”
Not only does this season’s team have added experience, Goderwis
believes it has talent. In addition, the Lions have a new assistant coach
this spring – Dan Benjamin.
“I think this team as a whole is more talented than any team in the last
several years.’’ the Lions’ head coach added. “We have very strong hitters
and very good defensive players. We just have to get stronger as a pitching
staff. We can’t have the earned run average we’ve had in the last two years.
I believe we have the talent to do this.”
The Mount completed the 2012 season with a 6.25 ERA after turning in a
6.32 team ERA the season before.
The last time the Lions had a winning record in the conference was 2008,
when they finished 10-6. The Lions made the conference tournament that
season, and also won two games in the HCAC Tournament. Coach Goderwis
and her team are aiming to get the team back to that level.
“We have not had a strong season in the past three years, so we are not
really thought of as a team that is strong,’’ Goderwis added. “We need to
change that this season. I think a lot of teams do not respect us, and that
makes me very angry. I think we have the talent this season to produce
wins which will bring back that respect.”
Two former All-Conference players return to the team this year.
In 2011, senior Tanya Sefton was named to the All-HCAC second team as an
outfielder. Last year Sefton led the team in walks, and was second in stolen
bases with six, while also hitting .253. Last season, sophomore catcher
Lindsay Griffith was named Honorable Mention HCAC. Griffith led the team
in doubles in 2012 with 12, and was one of only three Mount players to hit
a home run. She also hit .290 on the year.
The following is a position-by-position look at the Lions’ 2013 team,
with comments provided by Coach Goderwis.
2013 SOFTBALL GUIDE 11

2013 Season Outlook
PITCHING
Last year inexperience plagued the Lions at this position. All five pitchers
who saw action for the Mount in 2012, however, are back. At the top of
the rotation is senior Kim McElhinny, who led the Lions in appearances last
year with 19, including 17 games as a starting pitcher. Four sophomores
will be the other pitchers for the Lions. Among that group are: Leslie Biggs,
who led the Lions in ERA last year while appearing in 19 games; Danielle
Hausfeld, Erica D’Arcy and Taylor McElhinny. Both Hausfeld and Biggs had
14 or more appearances last year. Hausfield was second on the team last
season in ERA, while D’Arcy posted the team’s lone save. Taylor McElhinny
pitched just 13.2 innings last season, as she saw the majority of her
playing time at third base for the Mount.
“I am expecting really great things out of all of our pitchers,’’ Goderwis
says. “Biggs and Hausfeld were hurt some last year, too, and did not get as
many as starts as I would have liked. They are both healthy and I expect
them to do a great job for us this year. All of our pitchers will be used as
starters, and in relief this season.”
CATCHER
Griffith returns for her second season for the Lions in 2013, after a solid
all-around campaign last spring. She started and played in 35 games last
season and was the team’s lone player receiving all-conference status. Two
freshmen, Becky Owens and Pam Wisniewski, will be the primary backups at
catcher. Goderwis is excited to have depth at catcher so she will have the
chance to rest Griffith when needed. All three of the catchers also have the
ability to play either of the corner infield positions, says Goderwis.
OUTFIELD
The outfield will be led again by Sefton, who looks to hold down a starting
spot in either center or right field. Playing alongside Sefton will be
sophomore Megan Erdman, who started 38 games for the Lions last year,
and Moore, a sophomore, who was third on the team in RBI last year.
Others players that may see time in the outfield this spring for the Lions
are: sophomore transfer Paige Norton, junior Harley Huston; and freshmen
Sami Ives and Katie Mitchell.
DESIGNATED HITTER
Goderwis says that the team does not have a specific athlete in mind for
this position. Offense is what the team seeks, so Goderwis will be looking
for a strong batter in this spot.
Once again the Mount will have a very challenging schedule this season,
inside and outside the conference.
“Our schedule is very tough this season, just as it has been in the past
years,’’ Goderwis added. “I feel that you have to play good teams to make
you better.”
The Lions are scheduled to begin the new season on March 3 at home
in a doubleheader against Marietta College. Following a March 4 scheduled
doubleheader also at home against Oberlin College, the Lions will travel to
Kissimmee, Florida for their annual Spring Break trip, where they will play
eight games over four days. The Lions begin HCAC play on March 29 at 2012
HCAC champion Anderson University, and will play 16 conference games, with
conference action concluding at home on April 27 against Franklin College.
FIRST BASE
Last year the Lions used Kim McElhinny and D’Arcy as their first basemen,
and are expected to use that combo again at first when they are not
pitching. Last year Kim McElhinny was second on the team in at-bats,
hitting .241, and starting all 39 games. She gives the team needed power
in the line-up. D’Arcy was second on the team in putouts while playing first
base. Goderwis adds that Taylor McElhinny, Griffith and Heather Seurkamp
might also see some time at first base this spring.
SECOND BASE
The starting second base position will most likely be held down again by
returning junior Katie Gregg. Last year Gregg started 33 of the 39 games,
and she is back for her third season. Two freshmen, Megan James and Nikki
Martin, also look to push for playing time at this spot, leaving Goderwis
and the Lions’ coaching staff pleased with the depth at this position.
SHORTSTOP
At shortstop the Lions return sophomore Mallory Wright, who started 34
games for the Lions last year and led the team in batting average, hitting
at a .364 clip. She was also first on the team in hits with 39, first in stolen
bases with 15, and second in slugging percentage at .404. Backing up
Wright will be sophomore Ashley Moore, who played a variety of positions
last year, and James.
THIRD BASE
Taylor McElhinny and Seurkamp saw most of the playing time last season for
the Mount at the hot corner and will compete to start there this spring, as
will freshman Claire Wehby, who Goderwis is excited to see play. Seurkamp hit
.268 last season in 41 at-bats, while Taylor McElhinny gives the team good
power at the position, leading the team in 2013 with two home runs and
19 RBI. Wisniewski and Owens might also see time at this spot.
Mount sophomore pitcher/infielder Taylor McElhinny led the Lions in 2012 with two
home runs and 19 RBI.
HCAC Tournament Championship and a second consecutive qualification to
the NCAA Division III post-season tournament. The 2005 season saw her
direct the Mount to a third-place finish in the HCAC regular season and
finish with an overall record of 18-14.
Hometown (High School): Cincinnati, OH
(Northwest)
Moore returns to the Mount for her second season.
She started 34 of her 36 games played last season,
mainly in the outfield, and turned in a solid all-around campaign. Moore
led the Lions in walks (tied), was second in doubles and third in RBI,
saw some time at catcher last season, gives the team good versatility by
playing several infield positions. Ashley is the daughter of Jeanette and
Sefton returns to the Mount for her fourth season. She
tied for the team lead in walks, was second in doubles
and second in runs scored in 2012. Sefton, seventh all-time at the Mount
in stolen bases with 28, needs just two more steals to move into sixth
her career-high, and is expected to hold down a starting outfield position
again this coming season, either in center field or right field. Head Coach
Beth Goderwis says that her fourth-year player needs to utilize her speed
this season to get on base for the Lions, to put pressure on the defense.
Goderwis adds that Sefton most likely will hit in either one of the first two
spots of the batting order, or ninth this spring. Tanya is the daughter of
2013 SOFTBALL GUIDE 21

The Mount in the HCAC
The College of Mount St. Joseph Lions head into their 15th season as a
member of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference. Other conference
members include: Anderson University, Bluffton University, Defiance
College, Franklin College, Hanover College, Manchester University, Rose
-Hulman Institute of Technology, and Transylvania University.
In 1999, the Lions ended their season fourth in the HCAC regular season
standings. They also placed third in the HCAC Tournament. The team
placed in the top three in batting average (.325), slugging percentage
(.404), and ERA (2.50). April King, Anita Murphy and Cari Stroub were
named to the All Conference Team in 1999.
In 2000 the Mount placed fifth in the HCAC regular season. The team
was third in runs scored with 74 runs. The Lions also tied for second place
in doubles (22) and triples (5). The Lions were eliminated in the first
round of the HCAC Tournament. Following the season, Stephanie Schram
and Angela Von Gries were named to the All -Conference Team.
2001 was a great year for the Lions as they tied for second place, 7-5,
in the HCAC regular season (along with Anderson and Bluffton). The Lions
advanced to the finals of the HCAC Tournament, but lost to the eventual
champion Manchester, 2-1 and 4-0 (championship game). Christy Stath
was awarded HCAC Most Valuable Player and All-Conference. Schram and
Von Gries were once again named to the All-Conference Team. Stath and
Von Gries were also named Players of the Week during the season. The
Lions led the conference in doubles (19).
The Lions’ success continued to build in 2002, as they captured second
place behind Transylvania University in the regular season standings.
Advancing to the HCAC Tournament finals with wins over Manchester and
Defiance, the Lions beat Anderson in two games, capturing their first ever
HCAC Championship title. With that win, the Mount earned a bid in the
NCAA III Regional Tournament. Senior Julie Wise was named Most Valuable
Player in the conference, and freshman Kati Stroub earned the Freshman
of the Year award. Joining them on the All -Conference team were seniors
Christy Stath and Stephanie Schram.
The 2003 season marked the third straight season that the Mount
claimed second place in the HCAC. The Lions repeated as HCAC Tournament
Champions, sweeping through the tournament undefeated, including a
championship win against Defiance College. Kati Stroub tossed a 1 0 no
hitter against Anderson in the tournament. The Lions once again advanced
to the NCAA III Regional Tournament. Stroub, Carrie Higgins and Annie
Neumann were selected All-Conference while Erin Mallory gained HCAC
Player of the Week honors. Jacqueline Gering, Lori Gray, Sondra Roberto,
and Neumann were named Academic All-Conference.
The Mount got off to a fast start in conference play in 2004, sweeping
Anderson in a doubleheader to open HCAC action, they then dropped three
straight, including a doubleheader at Franklin College. After sweeping
Manchester College, the Mount stood at 6-4 in the HCAC. They finished
their conference schedule by splitting doubleheaders against Transylvania
University and Hanover College. The Lions, picked for second in the
Preseason Coaches’ Poll, finished tied for third with Franklin and captured
the fourth seed for the HCAC Tournament. They dropped their first game in
the HCAC Tournament but rebounded to win three straight to advance to
the championship game where they were defeated by Defiance College, 6-5
in 10 innings. Kati Stroub, Annie Neumann and Carrie Higgins were named
All-Conference and Megan Vincent received an HCAC Player of the Week
award. Jennifer Esterman, Jackie Gering, Amy Sunderman, and Neumann
each received Academic All Conference recognition.
The 2005 season was yet another winning year for the Lions. With
18 wins and 14 losses, the Mount finished third in the HCAC, with 10
conference victories. The Lions season ended with two early losses in the
HCAC Tournament to Defiance College, 11-9 and Bluffton College, 7-1.
Leading the way for the Lions was senior outfielder Annie Neumann, senior
third baseman Carrie Higgins and junior outfielder Amy Sunderman. All
three were voted to the HCAC All-Conference Team. Neumann, Sunderman
and Katie Stroub also took home HCAC Player of the Week Honors, in three
consecutive weeks.
In 2006, the Lions finished with an overall record of 17-24, but they
came in fourth in the conference with a 7-7 mark. They went on to
win three games in the HCAC Tournament, en route to the conference
semifinals, where their season ended against Anderson University. Leading
the way for the Lions during the conference schedule was senior catcher
Alicia Johnson, who earned a spot on the HCAC All-Conference Team.
Johnson batted .318 and started 37 games. Senior pitcher Jennifer
Esterman picked up an HCAC Player of the Week award during the season.
The Lions slipped to seventh in the HCAC standings in 2007 with a 7-9
mark, missing out on making the HCAC Tournament. There were, however,
some solid performances turned in by Mount players. In conference games
only, the Mount finished first in innings pitched, first in runners picked
off, tied for second in stolen bases, third in fielding percentage, and
fourth in ERA. Erin Brogan was first in the conference in stolen bases
while Randi Yaeger was second in doubles. Yaeger was the team’s lone
representative on the All-Conference team while Sheena Hundley, Casey
Downey and Brogan picked up HCAC Player of the Week honors during the
season.
The Mount recorded a 10-6 conference mark in 2008, tying them for
the second best record in the conference and gaining them the fourth
seed for the HCAC Tournament. The Lions began the conference slate of
games with a sweep over Anderson University and also added doubleheader
sweeps against Transylvania, Franklin, and Hanover (to end the
HCAC regular season). The Mount went 2-2 in the Conference Tournament,
opening with a 1-0 loss to Rose-Hulman, but then capturing victories over
Bluffton (6-3) and Rose-Hulman (7-4) to propel them to the Championship
game against Defiance, which they lost 11-5 in 13 innings. Freshman
second baseman Megan McCullough and senior first baseman Katie
Cammerer were chosen All-HCAC during the season, while senior outfielder
Ashleigh Stallkamp and freshman pitcher Katie Cohill picked up HCAC
Player of the Week honors in 2008. Stallkamp tied for first in the HCAC in
home runs while McCullough was second in walks and on base percentage.
Cohill was in the top two of six different pitching categories in HCAC play,
including first in saves, games finished and games relieved. Sophomore
third baseman Casey Downey was second in the conference in assists. In
the team statistics, the Lions placed in the top five in 12 different top
offensive categories, including first in at bats and second in hit by pitch
and home runs, while the pitching staff was first in saves and second in
innings pitched in conference action.
The Lions had an up-and-down season as a team in conference play
for the 2009 season. They started the season winning only once out of
their first six HCAC games, and then rolled to five straight wins. Following
that were three straight, 1-0 losses (two to Defiance College and one to
Bluffton University). The Mount, however, rebounded to take the final two
games of their conference schedule, over Hanover College, to finish with
a .500 record at 8-8. In conference games only, the Mount ranked third
in team batting average while Megan McCullough was second in on-base
percentage, second in walks and fourth in batting average. Casey Waldman
tied for the most stolen bases in the conference while teammate Casey
Brookbank was second in earned run average. Kristina Dennett was third
in walks. McCullough, Waldman and Brookbank were selected Second Team
All-HCAC while Dennett was named Honorable Mention All Conference.
The 2010 season saw the Lions finish in eighth place, in the conference.
After starting the season with six straight conference losses, including
22
two by one run, the Mount recorded doubleheader splits against both
Defiance College and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. They completed
the season with a doubleheader sweep over Hanover College. Nell Wilson,
Kathleen Horn, and Tanya Sefton were all selected Second Team All-
Conference while teammate Casey Brookbank was chosen Honorable
Mention, in addition to picking up an HCAC Pitcher of the Week award.
Wilson was tied for first in doubles while Brookbank was fourth in innings
pitched in the conference.
In 2011, the Lions jumped up a spot in the HCAC standings, moving
from eighth place in 2010 to seventh place. Two Lions, Tanya Sefton
and Kathleen Horn were named to the Second Team All-HCAC for their
performances during the season. Horn also received Hitter of the Week
honors along with teammate Katie Cohill who was named Pitcher of the
Week honors. Horn hit .550 during conference play, which was good
for second-best in the HCAC. Horn finished in the top five of four other
offensive statistical categories during conference games. The Mount
finished third in the conference in fielding percentage with an impressive
.956 mark and fifth in earned run average at 4.78.
In 2012 the Lions finished with six conference wins, including a
doubleheader sweep of HCAC-foe Hanover College. Freshman Lindsay Griffith
was named Honorable Mention All-HCAC. The Lions had two players who
finished with a 1.000 fielding percentage tying for the conference lead.
Erica D’Arcy finished first among eligible pitchers with four walks given up.
