From the Publisher

I read once that when people have truly found

enlightenment they see God in everybody and

everything. Well, I’m definitely not there yet.

For the most part, it’s an ongoing struggle with

the committee that likes to reside within my

thoughts. All I have to do is read the paper,

turn on the news or engage in topical conversations,

and the ability to see God in everyone

and everything seems to abandon me.

But I do get a brief glimpse of it now and then

– usually after a yoga practice or any other

spiritual practice, such as meditation or chanting,

that I may indulge in to still my mind.

One of my favorite Van Morrison songs is

called Enlightenment.

His words pretty much sum it up for me:

Chop that wood

Carry water

What’s the sound of one hand clapping

Enlightenment, don’t know what it is

Every second, every minute

It keeps changing to something different

Enlightenment, don’t know what it is

Enlightenment, don’t know what it is

It says it’s non attachment

Non attachment. non attachment

I’m in the here and now, and I’m meditating

And still I’m suffering but that’s my problem

Enlightenment, don’t know what it is

Wake up

Enlightenment says the world is nothing

Nothing but a dream, everything’s an illusion

And nothing is real

Good or bad baby

You can change it anyway you want

You can rearrange it

Enlightenment, don’t know what it is

A Course in Miracles says that we will all get to

true enlightenment. Some sooner – some later.

I suppose a lot of it has to do with what we

feed the committee.

May we all trudge the road to happy destiny

and enlightenment. ~ Namasté Clyde

Plant Perfection Foods

Five years ago our future looked pretty bleak.

We were starting down the path of chronic

disease that seems to plague almost everyone

over time. From Drs.Caldwell Esselstyn

www.heartattackproof.com and John McDougall

www.drmcdougall.com we learned almost

all chronic disease is the result of the Western

diet. We made the change.

Seemingly overnight our future was transformed

from one of debilitating illness to thriving

wellness simply by changing the composition

of our food. The change was so profound

that we wanted to be part of helping other

people change their futures so we started Plant

Perfection Foods.

At Plant Perfection Foods we are passionate

about eating only plants. The food we make

at the kitchen is prepared the way we cook at

home. Made from gluten free whole plants, we

add no nuts, oils, salt, or sugar to the food we

make. We then deliver it to homes and restaurants

throughout our area: Cleveland through

Pittsburgh.

We started Plant Perfection Foods with one

goal in mind - to provide truly healthy, convenient,

affordable, and delicious food to people

who want to take control of their futures by

changing the composition of their food.

Changing our own diet has been an amazing

journey; one not only to better health of body

but better health of mind and spirit. We’ve

come to believe humanity is on the cusp of a

food revolution which will transform the future

of the entire universe and we are excited to be

a part of that revolution.

Making Pictures

We make our pictures out of air.

Nothing in the frame can exist before we make it seen.

We need a story.

We need a place to tell it.

We search down lonely roads, hike mountains and cities,

looking for something that is only an idea.

We find the perfect place.

We change it to a place made for us.

It’s ours for the moment.

Then we take it all down, as if it never existed.

It disappears into thin air.

Pictures are bridges between artist and audience.

We are a bridge between the picture and the real world.

Without the real world, there are no pictures.

Only air waiting for ideas.

ENLIGHTENMENT

P.R.A.Y. Jewelry

P.R.A.Y. (Pure Rock Angel Yogi) empowers and raises global consciousness, one piece of jewelry at a

time via fashion, food, and music. P.R.A.Y’s. designs incorporate nature’s basic elements, and symbolize

all interconnectedness of life on earth. Collaborations include my sister’s NGO, The Cookbook Project,

educating about nutrition, the slow food movement, and sustainable agriculture in underserved populations

globally and Sparrow Grace. A singer-songwriter, she accompanies Dave Stringer, and is representing

P.R.A.Y. at her Kirtan events.

The jewelry is made using an ancient method in Bali that, until now, has been reserved for making Kris

Swords. So taken with the power and mystique of the Kris Sword, I chose to use this process for my jewelry.

On an auspicious day, the Kris maker infuses nine metals along with energy, blessings and spirit.

After completion, all jewelry is blessed in ceremony by a Balyan, or Healing Man. The Balinese state

that the powers P.R.A.Y. holds only work if you believe them. I am testament to that; after a short time

Michael Franti, Dharma Mittra, Sparrow Grace, Jeanna Dickerson, Kickstarter, people around the world

are wearing and talking about P.R.A.Y. Jewelry.

The Front Porch

“I’m simply saying that there is a way to

be sane. I’m saying that you can

get rid of all this insanity created by the

past in you. Just by being a simple

witness of your thought processes.

It is simply sitting silently, witnessing

the thoughts, passing before you.

Just witnessing, not interfering not even

judging, because the moment you

judge you have lost the pure witness.

The moment you say “this is good, this

is bad,” you have already jumped onto

the thought process.

It takes a little time to create a gap between

the witness and the mind. Once

the gap is there, you are in for a great

suprise, that you are not the mind, that

you are the witness, A watcher.

And this process of watching is the very

alchemy of real religion. Because as

you become more and more deeply

rooted in witnessing, thoughts start

disappearing. You are, but the mind is

utterly empty.

That’s the moment of enlightenment.

That is the moment that you become for

the first time an unconditioned, sane,

really free human being.”

The Chemical Nature

of Enlightenment

By Anne Hilliard

hat is Enlightenment Self-realization, satori, liberation, freedom,

awakening, samadhi. I asked this question 20 years ago when I

was writing my thesis in college. My advisor was Robert Thurman,

Wfamous friend of the Dalai Lama, so I hoped to have a direct shortcut to

esoteric knowledge.

The Dalai Lama came to give a talk at Columbia University during my

junior year. However, only senior religion majors were allowed access to this

exclusive event. I lurked on the steps outside Butler Library, hoping for a

glimpse of this enlightened being.

Pa g e 10

But then it all happened so fast: the Dalai Lama

emerged, surrounded by a massive entourage.

Professor Thurman hovered protectively on his

left, leaning down and whispering in his ear as

they descended to the promenade.

Perhaps the supreme knowledge could be transmitted to me by proximity.

Like a lioness stalking its prey, I waited patiently. But then it all happened so

fast: the Dalai Lama emerged, surrounded by a massive entourage. Professor

Thurman hovered protectively on his left, leaning down and whispering in his

ear as they descended to the promenade.

I transformed into a mere fly on the wall, a parasitic wannabe to a privileged

club that would not have me as a member. If this being was indeed

enlightened, I could not discern it. His blissful energy was obscured by the

vortex of busy bees bustling about him.

Ja Ja n u a r r y y • Fe Fe b b r r u a r r y y 2013

I searched for articles on enlightenment

and meditation in Medline,

now a sophisticated database

comprising thousands of medical

research articles, but at the time a

primitive DOS system with faint dotmatrix

paper printouts.

All I could find were some abstracts

of psychology articles suggesting

that those who are mentally

unstable or have mental illness should

not practice meditation because

they lack sufficient ego strength to

survive the process psychologically

intact. Because mental illness runs

in my family – my aunt and greatgrandfather

had devastating paranoid

schizophrenia – I worried that if

I meditated I would be prone to some

sort of psychotic break.

I voiced my concerns to my

teacher about the possibility of losing

my mind if I went too deep into

meditation. Enigmatically, he replied

to investigate the nature of that which

I was worried about losing.

I have managed to muddle

through the past couple of decades

avoiding the family curse of schizophrenia.

Because most cases are

diagnosed in the early 20s, I felt reassured

that if it hadn’t happened by

now, it wasn’t going to happen.

And just when I thought I was out

of the woods, I recently discovered

another wave of diagnoses for women

around the time of menopause.

If I could define enlightenment in

scientific terms, this could provide

an answer to the question on intellectual,

if not experiential, grounds.

A materialist theory of mind suggests

that enlightenment is reducible to a

physical state, a complex series of

electrical and chemical impulses in

the brain. It could be visualized in a

brain imaging series – perhaps a realtime

MRI with contrast – comparing

active sites in the brain of an enlightened person to the

brain of an ordinary one.

On the other hand, a dualist theory of mind would

assert that enlightenment – like other mental states such

as the sensation of pain or the perception of the color red

– emerges from a complex physical system (the brain)

but is in turn irreducible to physical explanations.

There are two forms of a dualist approach. In epiphenomenalism,

enlightenment is like the visible discharges

of static cling in the dark, arising from the physical matrix

but unable to perform any useful activity. Therefore

enlightenment would have no impact on the brain from

which it arises.

Because mental illness runs in my

family – my aunt and great-grandfather

had devastating paranoid

schizophrenia – I worried that if

I meditated I would be prone to

some sort of psychotic break.

The second approach, interactionism, does ascribe

potency to mental states upon the physical realm, so an

enlightened being might benefit from behavioral effects.

For example, the enlightened one might be less apt to

lose his temper if someone does not wait his turn at a

four-way stop.

We had to present our thesis-in-progress to the other

religion majors at a cozy get-together with tea at a professor’s

apartment. I described my initial project. Tara,

a fellow student who aptly shares a name with the great

female Buddha, broke through the fog of illusion with a

single question: Is enlightenment a permanent state, or

is it a temporary experience

To this day I have no answer. I had assumed that once

a being attained enlightenment, it was a done deal. Now

I had to reconsider. Does an enlightened being walk to

the grocery store in an elevated state, or does she have

to get back to the meditation cushion between errands

Does she experience the Great Awakening but then go

back to sleep

To make matters more complicated, Patanjali describes

several levels of samadhi on a spectrum that is

broken down into two basic subsets.

Sabeeja sam dhi maintains awareness of a symbol in

the mind. Nirbeeja samadhi transcends consciousness,

moving toward stillness. ’ Samadhi is the goal of yoga, but

how do you know when you get there When the consciousness

becomes free from the physical sphere. Freedom

from the physical sphere is conceptually consistent

with a dualist approach in which there is a transcendent

state irreducible to physical properties.

Does Enlightenment ebb and flow just like any other

mental state, such as joy or sadness Going back to my

youthful personal fears, would a continuous state of enlightenment,

if achieved, constitute psychosis Would I

become so internally preoccupied that I would not be able

to interact effectively with others That level of dysfunction

is, after all, one of the hallmarks of schizophrenia.

I no longer fear enlightenment.

The probability that I will get

there is slim. It is the brass ring to

reach for, getting asymptotically

closer but never quite there. Enlightenment

is a process. Whether

physical, nonphysical, waxing or

waning, it is a way of being in the

world.

Chop

Wood

Carry

Water

By Eva Starr

ne of my favorite Zen quotes

is “Before enlightenment:

chop wood, carry water. OAfter enlightenment: chop wood,

carry water.” For me, that says it all.

The tasks are the same, the need is

the same. The enlightenment comes

not from chopping wood or carrying

water. It comes from being in a state

of mindfulness in whatever you are

doing, wherever you are doing it.

Enlightenment is different for everyone,

and there are varying degrees,

or stages, of enlightenment.

Have you heard the story of the

Taoist farmer He loses his horse and

the town’s people are in an uproar,

but then two beautiful horses come

upon his land. Of course, the town’s

people think this is a wonderful

fortune.

Then the farmer’s son gets

thrown from one of the horses and

breaks a leg. Again the town’s people

are distraught. But soon after, the

army comes through town to find

new recruits. They come looking for

the son, who is of age, but can’t conscript

him because of his injury.

In reality we are never

in the dark; all we need

to do is “turn on the

switch.” Isn’t that what

enlightenment is all

about – moving from

the dark into the light

The moral of the story is that

no matter what happens it is neither

good nor bad. It simply is.

I am still working on enlightenment;

as long as you are breathing,

there’s work to do. Enlightenment is

a journey, just like everything else in

life. I am no more enlightened than

the heroin addict. I do not know what

his/her agreements are, nor does

he/she know mine. To be free from

judgment would be total bliss (now

that would be enlightenment), but I

am not there.

To stay in the moment is enlightenment,

which again is something

most of us strive for on our spiritual

path.

In reality we are never in the

the switch.” Isn’t that what enlightenment

still the same room. Nothing happened; all you did

was turn on the light.

Go ahead and ponder that statement for a moment.

We are always in a state of enlightenment, whether we

realize it or not; all we need to do is decide. Decide to

feel compassion instead of judgment; decide to give

generously instead of being selfish.

At any moment, we can make a decision that

comes from the heart instead of the ego. Isn’t all of

this enlightenment

I didn’t always think this way; I spent decades

searching for enlightenment. It is only now at the age

of 57 that I have come to understand that how I choose

to look at each moment is enlightenment.

As Thoreau wrote in Walden: “Only that day dawns

to which we are awake. There is more day to dawn.

The Sun is but a morning star.”

We must awake from the dream, and each moment

we awaken is enlightenment. To awaken from

the dream is to be at one with each moment – to stay

in the present, not to dwell in the past or worry about

the future.

How many of us are in this state of enlightenment

In this age of multitasking I’m afraid not many. Is the

smart phone really that smart

Take time right now to stop, be with the page you

are reading, let the words resonate with your being.

Next time you sit down with a meal (or do you eat

standing up like a horse) savor every bite.

Are you eating in front of the tube, while driving

your car or gulping down your food in the elevator

on the way to a meeting No wonder America is so

stressed out; we are do-bees. Quit doing and just

be.

We must awake from the dream;

each moment we awaken is enlightenment.

To awaken from the dream

is to be at one with each moment –

to stay in the present, not to dwell

in the past or worry about the

future.

Yeah, I hear some of you saying there isn’t enough

time in my day to just be. Well, I’ve got news for you:

there’d be more time in your day (and your life) if you

made time for meditation, to sit in the silence.

Meditation isn’t about hearing the bells and whistles

or not hearing anything at all; it is just stopping

to recognize where you are.

If you can put yourself outside of yourself, and observe

each time you experience an emotion – whether

it be anger or joy – you will learn much.

Take patience for example. When you scratch the

surface of impatience, you’ll uncover anger. You’re

angry for the way things are happening now, and impatient

that they’re not going the way you want them

to be. Next, in walks blame, and where do we place

the blame It’s a never-ending cycle.

We have to step back and notice what is happening.

This is when those moments spent in the silence

are of value, and intuition flows in, and we can come

to a resolution.

A reporter had asked the Dalai Lama, at the time

he won the Nobel Peace Prize, about his apparent lack

of anger at the Chinese (in the practice of genocide

toward the Tibetans). The Dalai Lama replied: “They

have taken everything from us; should I let them take

my mind as well”

When it comes to enlightenment, ask yourself:

“When in the dark, do I know where the light switch

is” If you can answer yes, then enlightenment is

closer than you think.

Creating a Toolbag for

Your Enlightenment

Many of us are experiencing great changes in

our lives and often think, “How the heck can I

go through changes, be balanced and achieve

enlightenment”

Because change is inevitable, let’s embrace it and

have the intention to move forward. As we shift negativity

out of our world, many emotions come to the surface for

clearing and releasing.

The world is shifting, and while

we’re seeing great changes in our

political and financial systems

especially, we are also experiencing

transformation of mind, body,

emotion and spirit.

The world is shifting, and while we’re seeing great

changes in our political and financial systems especially,

we are also experiencing transformation of mind, body,

emotion and spirit.

How do you get through great life shifts with grace

and ease

I recommend that my clients create a personal tool

bag for Enlightenment. In this tool bag, one can collect

all the tools necessary to remain centered, grounded

and balanced in the midst of great change. You, too, can

maintain inner peace and well-being by simply using the

tools in your tool bag.

Below is a list of some of the tools that can be part of

your bag. You can add your own tools to this list because

options are endless.

Laughter: Go online and search for jokes; have a

few chuckles. Listen to comedy or watch a funny movie.

Laughter is known to strengthen the immune system,

boost energy, diminish pain and alleviate stress. Laughter

is fun and free.

Service/Volunteer: I truly believe that enlightenment

becomes more powerful for us when we create love by

assisting others. Try it out for yourself to see how this

will improve your life. Gratification is at its best when you

make someone smile from the inside out.

Reach Out: Sometimes we just don’t have the extra

energy to get going or move forward. Feel free to reach

out and ask for help. You may connect with someone

who also wants to make changes and as a result, create

a wonderful friendship.

Meditation and self-hypnosis: A few minutes to quiet

your mind is a great way to de-stress and unwind.

Breathing: Oxygen is truly the gift of life. Breathe in,

hold, exhale. Spend time breathing with conscious effort.

It has a very soothing and relaxing effect on mind, body

and spirit. Many people are shallow breathers and rarely

take the time to deep-breathe.

Music: Listening to soothing music really does

“soothe the beast.” It can help bring down your anxiety

in just a few minutes.

Singing: Find your inner voice.

That place where your spirit

dwells. Sing alone or with others.

Just sing. Express yourself using

the power of your voice.

Chanting: Chanting is a wonderful

way to focus your attention

on something other than stress

and problems. You can just say,

“Ah” or “Om” repeatedly to turn

down the stress dial.

Sleep: Sometimes, the only way to recover from

traumatic change is to sleep. The body enters into a deep

healing state when you are sleeping and all your cells

are restored. Often, we see sleep as a negative, when in

emotions.

Movement: Some people call it exercise; I prefer to

call it movement. Shake your body by dancing. Move

your legs in your chair at work. Stretch your arms straight

up in the air. Movement can be quick and easy and can

restore your senses fast. Try yoga, accomplishing both

meditation and movement at the same time.

Nature outings: Whenever you are overwhelmed,

nature may be the best remedy. Allow yourself to escape

by going on a hike or nature walk or taking a road trip

to “get away.” Connect with the animals, the stars, the

sun, the moon and the plants, and listen to the messages

they can offer.

Purified water: Often, when we’re going through great

shifts, we forget to drink water. We are 70 percent water;

and water is a conduit for life. Sometimes, stress can be

aggravated by dehydration. A glass of water may relieve

many physical and emotional symptoms.

Guides, angels and light beings: Make sure to include

your guides, angels and light beings in your tool bag, so

you can call upon them at a moment’s notice for help

and guidance.

Prayers: Put the power of prayer in your bag. Start a

journal and write down powerful prayers you can refer to

on a daily basis whenever you feel unbalanced in mind,

body, emotion or spirit. Include descriptions of your

guides, angels and light beings.

Pets: Our unconditional loving companions live in the

present moment. Spend time with them, loving them and

they will return the love tenfold. And you will experience

it all in present time.

Incense, Essential Oils, etc.: Natural fragrances are

instant energy shifters. Add the scents you adore to your

environment. It will soothe your soul.

Other items: Add whatever de-stresses you to your

tool bag. Things that will keep you grounded, protected,

centered and relaxed despite the world’s happenings.

Keep your tool bag of Enlightenment in a handy

place, so you can refer to it and use your tools at a

moment’s notice. Your tool bag will help you navigate

through many changes with perfect grace and ease.

Herbal tea: Sometimes, taking a break and drinking

a cup of warm tea is the best policy for restoring balance.

Drink decaffeinated, organic herbal tea.

Technology-free moments: Yes, you can do it. Turn

off the cell phone, log out of Facebook and email, turn

off the computer and reduce the over-stimulation caused

by too much information.

Organic, raw, whole foods: A raw snack will do wonders

to ease your spirit. Snack on any food your heart

desires, even some organic dark chocolate.

Claim your space: There are times when the only way

to achieve balance and harmony is to remove yourself

completely from an environment. Claim your space. Let

everyone know you’re going to your own zone and will be

back in a little bit. Set up a personal altar where you can

retreat, meditate and relax. Or, if at work, take a lunch

break or a restroom break; go wherever you need to go

Awaken to

Who You

Really Are

laise Pascal, the famed 17th-century mathematician,

physicist and theologian, said: “One must

know oneself, if this does not serve to discover

Btruth, it at least serves as a rule of life and there is nothing

better.”

Until you are awakened to the truth, you will spend

your life embracing false beliefs about who you are. You

will take for granted that what is seen on the physical

plane is who you are; or, as some people say, “your

authentic self.”

Moreover, you will persist in the belief that the various

roles you play and the things you acquire during your life

will enhance who you are.

However, these falsehoods will only serve to further

impede your progress toward fulfillment in life.

The time will come when you will know who you really

are. You will know that you are one with the creative

force of the Universe.

Pa g e 20

By Dr. Norm Williams

The reason for this lack of awareness

is due to the fact that the true

Self lies dormant within you. You can

only have knowledge of it when it is

awakened.

This truth will reveal itself to you one day in the fullness

of God’s time as “the true Light, which lighteth every

man that cometh into the world” [John 1:9]. Then you will

not continue to live in darkness or ignorance. And you will

no longer rely on the external for guidance. For,“the Spirit

of truth ...will guide you into all truth” [John 16:13]. You’ll

come to know that nothing outside of you can prevent

you from achieving your good in this world.

The Bible says you were created in the image and likeness

of God. Hence, there is a God-like, absolute part of

you. Whereas you can change, reinvent or redesign your

physical self, the true Self is unchangeable.

When you become aware of the true Self, you will

know who you are. And, according to the Bible, the truth

will set you free. It will free you to realize your possibilities.

And you will come to know that you are a part of me, I am

Ja n u a r y • Fe b r u a r y 2013

a part of you, and that we are all a part of God.

The apostle Paul underscored this point when he

wrote:

“Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ

Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery

to be equal with God” [Philippians 2:5, 6].

And yet, each one of us is unique. We see this phenomenon

throughout nature. For example, each snowflake

is unique but is still a part of the snow. Similarly,

each wave in the ocean has its own unique characteristics,

yet each one comes from the other.

Sunbeams cannot separate themselves from the

sun any more than snowflakes can separate themselves

from the snow or the waves from the ocean. Neither can

human beings separate themselves from one another or

from God. Like the sunbeams, the snowflakes and the

waves of the ocean, you are part of creation and a part

of nature.

Therefore, you have a connectedness and interdependence

with all living things on Earth while you are connected

to God, the Infinite Source, which is the Universe.

Recognition of this oneness is crucial to your ultimate

success in your journey through life.

You represent both a physical and a spiritual nature.

You have a visible physical or mortal self and also an

invisible spiritual true Self. All of you are familiar with the

former. However, what you might not have known, up until

now, is that your physical self is not who you are.

The reason for this lack of awareness is due to the

fact that the true Self lies dormant within you. You can

only have knowledge of it when it is awakened.

Naturally, before this awakening occurs, and due to

your ignorance, you have no reason to suspect that your

physical self is not absolute and that it is not who you

think you are.

Your body is not the true Self. It

has been referred to as the temple

of the soul. Indeed, it is a vessel for

your mind and the Spirit that is the

true Self. Your body represents the

interconnectedness in nature.

Unlike the true Self, it is influenced by the nurturing,

cultural conditioning and experiences to which you are

exposed during your life. Continued on page 26

By Eva Starr

Dear Eva:

I have tried numerous times in the past to keep New

Year’s Resolutions without any luck. I feel I really want

to keep the resolutions I make; and, I am willing to do

what it takes. However, for some reason or another,

another year goes by without me sticking to any of the

resolutions I made, at least not for any length of time.

Any suggestions

– Resolution Breaker

My problem is that I am an ENFP

personality, with Aries Rising,

which means I start way too many

things, including resolutions, without

completing most of them.

Dear Resolution Breaker:

First, let me assure you, you are not alone in this

dilemma. An untold number of people have been through

what you are describing, including me. My problem is

that I am an ENFP personality, with Aries Rising, which

means I start way too many things, including resolutions,

without completing most of them.

The good news is we are going to tackle this thing

together. There are many ways to scale a mountain, so

let me break it down for you.

Be Specific. If you want to lose weight, instead of

telling yourself you’re going to lose weight, try this: I

am going to lose 20 pounds by the fourth of July, losing

three pounds a month. Then make a list of how you

are going to attempt this, (i.e. walking, hula hoop, gym,

yoga). Also, give yourself a why – your motivation (i.e.

cousin’s wedding). Without the why there is no reason

to keep going.

Start now. I am famous for starting things on the new

moon, full moon, blue moon, first of the month, solar

return date, etc. I’ve realized that I just need to do it now –

and if I mess up, I just start again the next moment. There

is no time like the present. You have a new “now” each

moment, do it now. Quit waiting for the circumstances

to be perfect – there is no such thing.

Pa g e 22

Ja n u a r y • Fe b r u a r y 2013

Scale down your list…make it the Year of the Body,

and pick a theme each month for the body. The Year

of Remodeling My Home, and again each month work

on one aspect. Same for the Year of Spirituality, (I think

you get the picture). Bottom line, keep it simple, pick

one thing, finish it and then move on. By the way, I got

some ideas from This Year I Will…, by M. J. Ryan. Good luck.

Dear Eva:

I work in an environment where not everyone is considerate

of others’ feelings, or appreciative of the work

we all do. Sometimes I feel like no matter what I do, it

isn’t good enough and my boss has a way of critiquing

my work in a less than positive/ constructive manner. My

feelings seem to get hurt way more than I care to think

about and part of me knows I shouldn’t take it personally,

but how does one carry that through

– Taking Things Personally

Taking things personally is something

I’ve been working on most of

my life. Fortunately, I have come to

discover little secrets along the way

that have helped me in situations

similar to what you are describing.

Dear Taking Things Personally:

Boy have you hit the nail on the head on that one!

Taking things personally is something I’ve been working

on most of my life. Fortunately, I have come to discover

little secrets along the way that have helped me in situations

similar to what you are describing.

First, if you haven’t already, get yourself a copy

of Don Miguel Ruiz’s The Four Agreements, and read it

cover-to-cover, especially Chapter 3: The Second Agreement.

It goes like this: We all have agreements we have

made with ourselves and we believe them to be true.

When another person triggers one of those agreements,

we feel the need to defend ourselves and we incur hurt

feelings. In reality, what someone says to us, or about us,

t h e Jo u r n e y

is simply their issue and their agreement, and they are

projecting it onto us.

Our life is a mirror, so we must somewhere – sometimes

hidden so deep within ourselves that we don’t see

it – inside of us, feel we are that statement and another

human being is simply showing us the screen of our life

that still needs healing.

There is too much for me to go into here, but if you

read Ruiz’s book, and while you’re at it pick up a copy

of Teri Cole Whitaker’s What You Think of Me Is None of

My Business, you’ll be well on your way to dealing with

taking things personally.

Planetary Pathways

By Eva Starr

ARIES

January – All right Ram…this is a New Year and we know

how you like fresh starts. You’re ready for a miracle healing;

provided you pull those horns of yours back a bit, have faith

and gratitude, focus on the truth and get out of those illusions

of fear.

February – Wow, Ram, you’re on a roll…those miracles

keep on coming. You’re healing more than your physical being

right now; everything around you is being touched by the

powers that be, but as you are aware, you must continue to

have the faith of a mustard seed.

TAURUS

January – There are times when it’s beneficial for the Bull

to stay inside the pen – this is one of them. Look inside yourself

for answers…everyone you talk to has something different to

say so go within; you’ve got more depth than you realize. Listen

to that still small Bull.

February – All the reflecting paid off. Good for you, now

it’s time to knock that fence down and kick up those heels; no

red cape is going to stop you. Plan a party, celebrate, it’s the

Chinese New Year, Year of the Snake, but it just might be the

Year of the Bull.

GEMINI

January – You’ve been stewing far too long (Jupiter has

been Retrograde in Gemini); rise above your problems. When

you’re in the middle of it, you can’t see a way out. See it from

outside yourself and you’ll be surprised what a different vantage

point can do. At least one of your Twins will have a new

idea.

February – Now we’ve come around a bit haven’t we

(and Jupiter DID go direct)…take that frequency shift you’ve

experienced recently and let like-minded people seek you out.

Get out and about, the Twins are experts in communication,

they like being around the action, circulate, circulate, circulate…

someone is waiting for you.

CANCER

January – You like to hide in that shell of yours don’t you

Well, you can come out now. Know that you are loved and

protected, no need to hide in your shell forever. The Universe

is watching out for the Crab and its loved ones. You can quit

giving your power away and make the decision to feel safe, let

your vulnerability go, you don’t need it.

February – Wow, you did reclaim your power and your

beauty is shining like the Moon inside and out…the Crab is

definitely being noticed now. Radiate that light, you have more

than enough to share…keep taking care of yourself, you deserve

it, whether it’s a massage, a class or enjoying your own

solitude…let your light shine, baby, shine!

LEO

January – The jungle definitely knows who is king this

month. Let your Lion mane down, boogie to your own music.

Music heals the soul, whether you sing, dance, play the guitar

or beat your own drums. It’s time to wake that jungle up with

all the music the Lion can muster. Pay special attention this

month to repeated songs, lyrics, etc.

February – All that rocking and rolling did the Lion some

good. It’s time to move forward fearlessly…looks like your creativity

had a major breakthrough. Trust your gut, stay within

your own integrity, don’t let anything stop you. After all, you

are King of the Jungle. Go for it, follow your heart’s desire, and

let the world hear your roar.

VIRGO

January – We all know the Virgos of the world can be just

a bit meticulous…move outside of the box, let your creativity

dazzle this month. No need to be analytical about everything

under the Sun. You need an outlet, whether it’s cooking, stained

glass, pottery, find something to do that lets your wild side

loose…you do have one don’t you

February – Congratulations, you did it, you created something!

Now it’s time to go out and make new friends, show your

creative self off to the world, have some fun…The right people

will be drawn to you like bees to honey. Don’t second-guess everything

to death either…just relax and give February a chance,

you’ll be glad you did.

LIBRA

January – You can quit vacillating over that problem of

yours; it’s being handled behind the scenes…the Universe and

its powers have been working overtime coming up with creative

solutions. Give a sigh of relief, but that doesn’t mean you’re done

doing your part…Keep creating harmony wherever you go and

bring those scales back to balance.

February – Now we can laugh about last month, the angels

tell you to take the serious things lightly, be like the hummingbirds

and find the joy and the humorous side of life…You’ve

never been one for conflict, so relax, enjoy life and laugh

yourself silly…maybe it will rub off on some of your serious

Scorpio friends.

SCORPIO

January – You do have a reason to be so serious: Saturn

has been in your sign since October and will stay there until the

end of 2014…You’re going to have to deal like the rest of us…

but for you it’s time for transformation…this month your theme

is surrender; let go of all that digging you’re so good at (your

time will come)…stop thinking.

February – Saturn goes Retrograde on the 18th in your

sign…with all that surrendering and letting go you did last

t h e Jo u r n e y

t h e Jo u r n e y

month, now it’s time for a change…a new location, changes

in the career arena…no worries, change is the only constant.

You can feel safe and pull back that Scorpion stinger of yours,

there’ll be no need for you to lash out. Relax.

SAGITTARIUS

January – The Centaur’s theme this month is kindness. Quit

beating up on yourself and others…you’ve heard of Random

Acts of Kindness… take that and run with it, you’ve got the

rest of your life to be in a tizzy (Jupiter has been opposing your

sign), but for now, make January the month of kindness and

let it blossom wherever the Centaur goes.

February – You listened; all that kindness paid off…your

problems are being resolved right under your nose…like begets

like. You can thank the stars, and all your acts of kindness, for

bringing some welcome relief into your life…Things are being

healed behind the scenes, go into the silence, Centaur, where

all those creative solutions live and breathe.

CAPRICORN

January – Look out: The Sun, Mercury and Venus are all

in the sign of the Goat at one time or another this month…

If you want to gain some insight into the benefits coming to

you with this lovely planetary alignment, then seek truth from

within this month…it’s time for the Goat to come down from

the mountainside.

February – The focus this month for my dear Goat is all the

things associated with paternal and maternal instincts…If you

have any unresolved issues with parents or children, whether

they’ve left this earthly plane or not, it’s time to resolve them

and let bygones be bygones. Find it in your heart to forgive…

it’s there.

AQUARIUS

January – Mars is in your sign this month; it’s time to

take that Martian energy and do what Aquarians do best: fight

causes. This month your theme is the environment…Mother

Earth is counting on you to help heal her…and nobody does

it better, whether it’s through recycling, eating plants, using

green-friendly products…get at it.

February – Helping the environment paid off…the Sun

and Venus showed up at your doorstep arm-in-arm, waiting to

whisk you away. You need a break; take some well needed R&R,

plan a vacation, spend a day at the spa; whatever intrigues that

Aquarian need for ingenuity, make it work in your favor…it’s

time for rejuvenating you.

PISCES

January – You’ve been swimming in that same pond for way

too long…the water’s starting to get stagnant. The New Year

beckons you out of your comfort zone; swim over to a few new

lakes and streams. Your world needs some new Fish in it and it

isn’t going to happen if you stay where you are. Swim on.

February – Mercury goes Retrograde in Pisces on the 23 rd …

don’t start new projects or sign any papers while the Retrograde

is going on…the Fish is confused enough as it is. Meanwhile

get in touch with your Inner Child, he/she is begging for some

play time…go hang out in those new ponds you discovered

last month.

Therefore, you are not your physical self. As the

possessive adjective “your” suggests, it belongs to you.

It is not you.

You may recall the following scene in Lewis Carroll’s

well-known novel, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland:

“‘Who are you’ asked the Caterpillar.

“Alice replied rather shyly, ‘I – I hardly know, Sir, just

at present – at least. I know who I was when I got up this

morning, but I think I must have changed several times

since then.’”

Your body is not the true Self. It has been referred

to as the temple of the soul. Indeed, it is a vessel for

your mind and the Spirit that is the true Self. Your body

represents the interconnectedness in nature. Each part

is connected to every other part through nerves and the

circulation of blood. Consequently, what takes place in

one area of your body affects other areas.

When you become aware of the true Self, you will

know who you really are. You will then be in a position

to let who you are shine through.

As a result, you will be able to have your unique

gifts and talents expressed to the world through you.

You will recognize your possibilities. And you will come

to understand every other living being with whom you

interact on this planet.
