God, our friend, walk with us in our search for meaning through the darkness that obscures our
vision.
God, our motivator, inspire us to meet the challenges of the future with hope of your Spirit.
Dear Members of the Academy Community,
This week has been a very important week for students in Years 9 to 12. Students have sat a number of examinations
with the culmination being the General Achievement Test (GAT) which took place yesterday for all students studying
a 3/4 unit. Hopefully your daughters will now be feeling not only a sense of relief but also a sense of accomplishment
that their study and their efforts have come to fruition.
We now move to Semester 2 next week and this new semester presents students with new challenges and the
opportunity to immerse themselves in their studies with renewed vigour and energy.
At the present time staff are involved in the extremely important process of Report writing. This is a task that takes an
enormous amount of time and I remind you of the two student free days as detailed in our College calendar.
• Wednesday, June 22 nd - Correction and Report Writing Day—no classes for students.
• Friday July 1 st - Proof Reading of Reports (am) and staff Professional Development (pm) – no classes
for students.
• Please note therefore that students will finish Term 2 at 3.15pm on Thursday, 30 th June.
• Reports will be posted during the first week of the school holidays.
The beginning of Term 3, Monday 18 th July is a Staff Professional Development Day.
Students begin Term 3 on Tuesday 19 th July.
On Sunday we celebrate the great feast of the Trinity. In acknowledgement of this feast let us pray for each other.
May the love of the Father enfold us,
The wisdom of the Son enlighten us,
The fire of the Holy Spirit inflame us;
And may the blessing of the Three Person God rest upon us,
And abide in us now and ever more. Amen.
From 1957 to 1961 at CSL, new insights into the funnel-web spider venom were gleaned through the efforts of Dr
Saul Wiener MB BS (Melb 1947), PhD (Melb 1952) MD (Melb 1960) FRACP and his collaborators though they were
not able to find either an antivenin or a drug that would neutralise the venom. In 1964, two other CSL workers,
Year 9 GREAT OUTDOORS - Mapping and Tourism project
Getaway Show!
From the sporting stadiums to shopping centres, Melbourne’s got it all! After visiting
Eureka Tower to get our bearings the Year 9 Great Outdoors class split into four
teams and have bravely ventured out to the corners of Melbourne’s hot spots,
bringing back to you pieces of treasures from each. We’re looking forward to
presenting our fieldwork as a ‘Getaway’ show. Thanks Mrs McLennan for the
experience.
Cheap Shopping
Melbourne is bursting over the rim with local and international designers, chain stores, vintage and small boutiques.
Arts, Entertainment and Sports
With Australia known as a sport fanatic country as well as a multi-cultural one, sporting
entertainment and cultural arts are lurking in every corner of Melbourne. Whether it’s Asian arts
and entertainment like China Town, or downright Aussie AFL and the MCG, this city is constantly
bubbling over with adventurers in search for a taste of fun.
Historical Melbourne
Melbourne is full of historical places and even though most may
cringe at the thought of going to places to do with history you can
actually get a lot out of it and have a good time!! As the Historical
Group we went to the Immigration Museum, Captain Cook’s
Cottage, The State Library and The Old Melbourne Gaol. We got
around to each of our destinations without getting lost once! We
had heaps of fun and really enjoyed ourselves.
Family Fun
On this Great Outdoors ‘Getaway’ excursion we visited
many great family fun places, including The Aquarium, Ice-
House, Wonderland Fun Park, The Museum and IMAX. We
enjoyed this experience going around Melbourne and
appreciated the beautiful scenery. In our travels, we came
across a Big M van and we were able to take as many
FREE Big M’s as we could, and that made our day!
This project brought Melbourne to life for the girls and it was wonderful seeing them so exited and productive
with their collection of data… Looking forward to the show!
LOTE NEWS
On Thursday 19 th May, ten students from the Year 11 Japanese class went
to Shoya Japanese restaurant in Market Lane in the city to conclude their
study of “The Eating Habits of the Japanese”. The girls were able to sample
a range of traditional Japanese food such as tofu, a type of savoury custard
called chawanmushi, tempura, sashimi and udon. They were also able to
experience dining at an authentic atmosphere seated at “horigotatsu” type
tables and being served by native speakers of the Japanese language who
were only too happy to explain what ingredients were used or how certain
dishes were prepared. The information gathered by the students on this
excursion was then used the following week when they wrote a review of the
restaurant in Japanese for their Written SAC.
RAGE Book Club
On Friday May 20 th Stephanie Stepan, a former student of the
Academy and now Publicist at Text Publishing, came to speak to
members of the RAGE Book Club about the publishing industry.
She firstly explained how she worked as a volunteer at a
publishing company and then managed to secure a position at
Text. She went on to talk about how authors go about getting their
books published and emphasised the importance of proof reading.
Editors do not accept manuscripts which have grammatical and
spelling errors. Steph also brought along a couple of young adult
books which are to be released later this year.
It was a great pleasure to welcome Steph back to the school and
hear about her life after Academy.
A number of RAGE members went along to the Reading Matters
Conference at the State Library on 26 th May and listened to a
number of authors talk about their books. The most entertaining
by far was Oliver Phommavanh who wrote Thai-riffic, a story about a Thai-Australian boy whose parents own a Thai
restaurant, but who longs for a pizza. He goes to great lengths to hide his Thai background but a school project
teaches him to appreciate his parents and culture. Oliver also wrote a chapter in Growing-up Asian in Australia, an
anthology of stories written by Asian Australians, edited by Alice Pung and which is held in the library.
It was a most entertaining morning and the girls are now looking forward to more of the same when we attend the
Melbourne Writers’ Festival in August.
Greetings school community,
‘Grease’ The Musical - What a tremendous success!
Congratulations and thank you to everybody who contributed to making our College musical a reality. Special thanks
must go to Sr. Mary Moloney, our Principal and Mr McFarlane, Principal of Simonds Catholic College for supporting
the production. Thank you to the Academy staff who gave up their time during rehearsals, helped backstage with
props, sets and ticketing. The guest appearances of Mr De Cata, Ms Doria, Ms Grove and Mr Hyland as Teen Angels
was appreciated. Thank you to our behind the Scenes helpers - Mr McInerney, Ms Harding, Ms Hocking, Ms
Luscombe, Mr Fern, Mr Gatt, Mr Romanin, Ms Neil, Mr Fuller, Mrs Appleby, Ms Kennedy, Mr Bourne, and Ms Salvo.
Past students were also involved - Mille Sedlarevic, Jennifer De Guzman, Rebecca Nutter, Hannah Butler, and Natalie
Taylor. Also a huge thank you must go out to all the parents who helped with sewing the costumes especially Mrs
Morrissey, Mrs Cavedon and donations from Mrs Allegro, Mr and Mrs Vavalà, Mr Rozakeas, and the Academy
Parents’ Association. Thank you, too, Marian College for the use of their props.
‘Grease’ is the Academy’s fourth production, following the success of ‘Wizard of Oz’, ‘Cinderella’ and ‘Leader of the
Pack’. This year’s production of Grease was a very historical event because it brought together two schools. The
show was put together during hours of holiday rehearsals, and lunchtime and after school rehearsals. We thank Mr
Hessey, Producer, Director and, just about everything else, for taking on this huge task.
In Mr Hessey’s words “the show wouldn’t have been possible without our student support”
Production Team - Alex Vavalá, Hariet Darby - Mr Hessey’s Assistants, Caitlin Farrelly – Costumes. Main
Choreographers – Sarah Cardamone, Emily-Rose Guarnuccio. Helpers – Ruby Fleming, Grace Donohoe (also
makeup), Isabella Cavedon, Giulietta Busso, Rebecca Bassett vocal coach.
Finally to everyone who has helped out along the way, your help has not gone unnoticed and we thank you very much.
Musical Report
It’s been 3 weeks, 4 days, 3 hours and 7 minutes since the Academy/ Simonds musical “Grease” came to a
spectacular end. For 9 months we have worked closely with a talented cast, an amazing production team and the
fabulous Mr Hessey and to see this musical come to an end is quite sad. Everyone involved this year had amazing
talents but there a few who need special mentions. We had an amazing group of choreographers (Isabella Cavedon,
Sarah Cardamone, Emily Guarnuccio & Ruby Fleming) who taught everyone to dance. Rebecca Basset was our vocal
coach who whipped everyone’s voices into shape. Our production team consisted of Caitlin Farrrely, Harriet Darby
and myself.
Caitlin was in charge of the costume department, designing an individual look for each cast member, rewrote the
script and did our pre-show warm ups. Harriet was our stage manager and over all organiser. She could fix any
problems on stage, find anything that went missing and created all the advertisement. Mr Hessey was our director,
producer, go to man, father figure and friend throughout the musical. His dedication to the musical was infallible and
without him it would never have come to fruition. And as our great maestro would always say to me, “Alex, please
write something about yourself!”
So this is what I got to say...
I was the official Nonna (Grandmother) of the production. My main job was generally looking out for the cast’s well
being. This entitled feeding them all (they eat so much), keeping them calm (I think it was them who kept me calm in
the end!), making sure all 100 and something costumes were all ironed ready to go (funnily enough, it became my
stress relief), cleaning up after the boys (I swear, I don’t think they know the meaning of the word ‘coat hanger’) and
attending to any wardrobe malfunction, scraped knee, emotional breakdown or just for a hug. Anyways, enough about
the awesome talents and let’s talk about the show…
Opening night was a success. Our night began with a mad flurry of costumes, make up, hair gel and straighteners but
as usual we were ready to perform by 7.30pm. The main highlight of the night was putting makeup on the boys as
they flat out refused. The cast performed to a sold out crowd and received a standing ovation. As the shows continued
the cast consumed countless amounts of cordial and food, probably used more than 4 large cans of hair spray,
applied numerous layers of foundation and used the question “Where is my…” a countless number of time.
Somewhere in between all the hype we all came to the realisation that this experience was nearly over. By Saturday
28 th the cast had made a deal to go out with a bang and that we did. That Saturday was our best show. Every note
was hit, every dance step performed and the acting was deserving of a Tony Award.
On behalf of the whole cast we would like to thank Mr Hessey for giving us the opportunity to shine on stage and
participate in an event that has left us with memories and friendships that will last a life time.
Alex Vavalá 12 Green
Wow, what an amazing 9 months full of blood, sweat and tears. It went and came so quickly. The five performances of
‘Grease’ were all a success. Opening Night was fantastic and despite a few technical difficulties and a rowdy audience
on the second night but we came through and worked together to keep the show going. The other 3 shows were also
illiant and very fun. I like to thank all the girls and boys who performed you were all amazing and did an excellent job
to make the show great. The boys at Simonds Catholic College were extraordinary. We thought that with no previous
experience from the boys, they wouldn’t make it, but they all surprised us with their hidden dancing, acting and singing
skills. They were amazing to watch and work with, so thank you.
I’d also like to thank Mr. Hessey for his support, his hard work, commitment and encouragement, because without him
this show wouldn’t have happened. So thanks Mr. Hessey.
I hope all of you watching had as fun, as we did performing.
So thank you to all who helped, and supported us, you are all very much appreciated.
I hope the next musical is as successful as this one was.
So thank you once again.
