The World
Comes to HLG

President’s Perspectives
Setting Our
Standards High
by Dr. Woodrow Burt, President
Contents
Table of Contents
Often we talk about something being “average” as if it were the accepted norm.
We talk about being an average athlete, average student, average program, or
simply an average person. We even compliment ourselves at times that we are
just “an average Joe.” But being average isn’t necessarily a compliment because
being “average” means that we’re just as near the bottom as we are the top.
13
Shane & Shane in concert.
Hannibal-LaGrange College has no desire to be an “average college.” We
aren’t interested in attracting “average students” who sit in “average classes”
taught by “average professors.” HLG has made a commitment to raise its
standards. Our Strategic Planning Team vision statement says that we have
a goal to become one of the “foremost institutions of Christian higher
education in the state of Missouri and the surrounding region.” In order
to accomplish that goal, we can’t settle for being average. As a result
we have raised our standards. The entrance requirements for students
entering HLG have been increased in recent years, and as a result we
are attracting above-average students. We have committed ourselves
to employing faculty with advanced degrees and extensive experience in
their fields of instruction. To encourage our current faculty to stay on the
cuffing edge in their specialities, the college is providing the funds for their
professional development.
If you’ve been on the campus in the past ten years, you will agree with
me that the facilities constructed in recent years, the Roland Fine
Arts Center, the Carroll Missions Center, Memorial Hall, and other
facilities, are far from “average.” These beautiful new facilities
provide an environment that enhances the teaching and learning
experience for our faculty and students.
Setting our standards high also means that we are implementing
a variety of programs that expand the horizons of our students
(i.e., study-abroad opportunities, innovative instruction, handson
experiences). It also means that we have made a concerted
effort to open our doors to more international students. This
academic year, eighteen countries are represented among
our student body. This exposure to various cultures from
around the world is not only an enriching experience for
those students who come from those countries, but it is
vitally significant for our American students as well. Our
international students bring a variety of customs and
a wealth of experiences from which we all learn and
benefit. They add to the high standards we’ve set.
God continues to bless HLG in many wonderful
ways. For those of you who have helped us to raise
the standards and provide a “quality education in a
distinctively Christian environment,”
I say THANKS!
HLG Celebrates Burt’s
Decennial Anniversary
Campus News
by Rhonda Hufty • Director of Public Relations
I love to travel!
I have had some wonderful
opportunities traveling both domestically
and internationally. I’ve had my share of
missed flights, lost luggage and unruly
cabin partners and have sometimes
experienced greater memories from the
flight than the exotic destination. I am
intrigued with different lands, languages,
customs, and people. Moreover, I
continue to be amazed and often
ashamed at what I don’t know about
the world around me. I find myself
sensitized to new cultures and grateful for new experiences that educate
my mind and shape my character.
That’s what we are all about here at HLG. We are in the business of
educating minds and shaping characters. Now, there’s nothing really
exotic about Hannibal, Missouri. However, on the campus of HLG, I
come in contact with a nuclear physicist, a Bible translator, Ivy League
grads, a fighter pilot, and furloughed missionaries all before lunch. It is
an exciting place to be!
We are proud of the students we serve here at Hannibal-LaGrange
College. Each coed brings a wealth of life experience to the halls of
HLG. From counties to continents, our student population is varied
and diverse and are both pupils and teachers. The HLG community is a
mini melting pot of education and culture where students are welcomed
to bring their unique experiences and backgrounds to “America’s
Hometown.”
Consequently, in this issue of the Reflections, we feature several
international students who bring an exciting and welcomed flavor
to our campus. Their sacrifice in order to earn an education is both
heartwarming and inspiring. Twenty-eight international students from
eighteen countries make HLG their home away from home this year and
we are blessed to call them “family.”
The iconic arch that graces all HLG printed materials from envelopes
to diplomas is more than a trademark. For those students who pass
through the arch on their first and last days at Hannibal-LaGrange
College, it is a symbol of passage to a new life. They are embarking on a
journey that will shape their lives for years to come.
I know you will enjoy reading the stories of men and women from all
walks of life who have chosen to “visit” our campus—some for only four
years or so, others who have decided to stay. So please make sure your
seat back and tray tables are in their full upright position, and on behalf
of the entire HLG crew, thank you for joining us on this trip. We know
you have a choice in choosing a college for your student, and we thank
you for choosing Hannibal-LaGrange College. Sit back, relax, and enjoy
the Reflections.
“This is a historical day in the life of Hannibal-LaGrange
College,” said Tom Hufty, Vice President for Collegiate Affairs and
Assistant to the President, at HLG’s decennial celebration in honor
of President Woodrow Burt. “Today we are honoring a
tremendous leader, a great man of integrity, and
a friend.”
Burt was honored at a special chapel
service for his 10 years as president of
Hannibal-LaGrange College. Burt
has served at HLG for a total of 26
years, in the positions of Dean of
Student Development, Academic
Dean, Registrar, Chief Development
Officer, Executive Vice-
President, Interim President, and
President.
February 2005 marked Burt’s
official anniversary. During his
tenure as president, Burt has seen the
residential enrollment grow by more
than 200%. Under his supervision dorms
have been renovated, the athletic program
has expanded, and the college’s administrative
organization has
been restructured.
Burt’s largest
undertaking to
date has been
the Roland Fine
Arts Center, and
most recently he
oversaw the addition
of the Carroll
Missions Center to
the campus.
“The heart of [Dr. Burt’s] leadership is
found not in physical buildings but in the
building of people,” said Hufty. “I feel I’m a
better leader by virtue of the time I’ve spent
with him. I also believe others on campus have benefited from
sitting under the shade of his leadership.”
Dr. Garry Breland, Vice President for Academic Affairs, noted
that “every day, the foremost thought on Dr. Burt’s mind is the
welfare and well-being of his students.”
Jered Taylor, HLG’s Student Government Association
President, agreed, noting that Burt “is
an amazing man of insight. He loves God
and he loves his students. I can’t thank
Dr. Burt enough for the blood, sweat,
and tears he has poured into HLG.
He gives excellence, and he requires
excellence.” Taylor also announced
that the student body at Hannibal-
LaGrange will be planting a tree on
campus in honor of Burt.
The faculty, staff, and administration
at HLG presented Burt and his
wife, Katherine, with a monetary gift to
be used for “a much needed vacation.”
On Friday, September 9, the trustees of
Hannibal-LaGrange College held a private
reception in honor of Burt. The Honorable Rachel
Bringer, representative for the state of Missouri, and the
Honorable Roy Hark, Mayor of Hannibal, announced a resolution
and proclamation,
which was
followed by a trustee
presentation. At the
presentation, the
Board announced the
renaming of HLG’s
Administration building
to the Woodrow
W. Burt Administration
Building. The
Board also presented a portrait of Katherine Burt
to be placed in the Burt Conference Room in the
Roland Fine Arts Center.
HLG Begins New
School Year
HLG Named to America’s Best Christian
Colleges & Best College Scholarships
Campus News
Cheers filled the air as students and parents
drove onto Hannibal-LaGrange College’s
campus on August 26th. In no time, yellowclad
HLG students swarmed around the car,
quickly and efficiently unloading televisions,
laundry baskets and computers, all while
excitedly welcoming their new classmates to
their “home away from home.”
Hannibal-LaGrange College welcomed
students back as nearly 450 students moved
on campus. This year HLG student leaders
served as the “Swarm Squad” and helped
new students move into their dorm rooms “in
two minutes flat.”
“We want to make a lasting first impression
on our new students and their parents
and these were the students who could make
that happen,” said Tom Hufty, Vice President
for Collegiate Affairs. More than 70 students
made up this year’s squad, as they
helped nearly 180 new students
move in.
Returning students were
greeted with a number of changes
on campus. Most notably was the
redesign of the cafeteria, located
in the Partee Center. The cafeteria
now contains updated seating
including booths and high tables,
new carpet and tile, TV monitors,
and an updated decor featuring
school colors and highlighting student
activities. Also gone are long
lines and limited service hours, as
the cafeteria now has unlimited
access from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Other changes at HLG include
the hiring of Kyle Brennemann,
HLG’s new Dean of Student Development.
Brennemann has collegiate
experience as former Dean
of Men at Pensacola Christian
College in Florida.
This year, students also volunteered
at local churches, businesses
and organizations to clean, paint, do
clerical work, and other tasks as part of the
annual Hannibal’s Helping Hands program.
Wednesday morning, Dr. Burt welcomed
students back at the annual President’s
‘To educate
a man in mind
and not in morals is to
educate a manace to society’
campus visit days 2006
Convocation, where he issued the challenge
to the HLG family to “develop our students
not only intellectually, but also physically,
socially, and spiritually.”
“Former President Theodore Roosevelt
once said, ‘To educate a man in mind and not
in morals is to educate a menace to society’...
Our mission is to provide you with an education
that will help you develop completelynothing
left out,” concluded Burt.
This year, nearly 1,100 students are
enrolled at HLG with over 800 served on the
Hannibal campus.
Hannibal-LaGrange College was named one of America’s Best
Christian Colleges and Best College Scholarships by the 15th Annual
National College Survey done by Institutional Research & Evaluation,
Inc. HLG is one of only three higher education institutions in Missouri
that was named as one of America’s Best Christian Colleges, and it is
the only one named to both America’s Best Christian Colleges and Best
College Scholarships. Over 1,400 colleges and universities nationwide
were analyzed in consideration for these honors.
HLG was named to America’s Best Christian Colleges on the basis
of documented environment of Christian influence, the grade point average
of incoming freshmen as well as the ACT/SAT scores of incoming
freshmen. This is the third year in a row that Hannibal-LaGrange
College has received this honor and scored well above the national
average.
HLG was named to America’s Best College Scholarships on the basis
of offering merit scholarships that are available to incoming full-time
freshmen, which are merit based only, not repayable in money or by
performance, offering a merit scholarship that is equal to at least 50%
of annual cost of attendance, not subject to residency requirement,
offered indiscriminately to US citizens and administered through
non-governmental monies. Only four colleges in the state of Missouri
received this honor.
Institutional Research & Evaluation, Inc., is an independent research
and consulting organization specializing in the recruiting and
retention of students for institutions of higher education. Consistent
with its mission, and as a guide by which other institutions may be
compared, each year Institutional Research & Evaluation, Inc. identifies
the American colleges and universities providing students with
the highest quality education. No college or university was paid to be
included in this report. Institutions are included solely on the basis of
merit.
Opportunities for Experience
HLG Strives to Enhance Learning Experience
In 1989, Dr. Kenneth McNutt, an English
professor at Hannibal-LaGrange College,
worked diligently to create the Honors
Program for HLG. This program which holds
its members to a high standard of educational
achievement, not only offers challenging
courses of classic texts to ambitious students,
but also provides its members a chance, with
the benefit of scholarships, to spend a semester
at Harlaxton College in England.
The college, which sits neatly by the small
town of Grantham, is housed in a nineteenthcentury
manor that is rich in both history
and architecture. Students from an array of
American colleges and universities strive to
meet the requirements to spend a semester
studying abroad at Harlaxton. This year,
HLG has a total of 35 students in its Honors
Program and it anticipates a record-enrollment
for Harlaxton College, according to the current
interest among students.
Since its beginning sixteen
years ago, Dr. McNutt has been the
Director of the Honors Program and
he assumes this role with obvious
enthusiasm. Honor students enjoy his
vast knowledge of English history and
literature, his generous laugh, and his
passion for teaching.
This past June, McNutt traveled
to Harlaxton to confer with
representatives from the other
colleges and universities that
cooperate with Harlaxton College by
contributing both their students and staff.
Each semester that a college or university
sends a group of their students to study
at Harlaxton, they also send one or more
teachers to help staff the college and provide
the students with a variety of courses.
In 1993, Dr. McNutt escorted the first
troupe from HLG to England and since then,
he has been instrumental in deciding which
teachers will be sent and what courses will
be offered during the semester that Hannibal-
LaGrange has its students at Harlaxton.
During the three-day conference this past
June, the Harlaxton staff and representatives
from all the cooperating colleges and
universities discussed curriculum regulations,
campus security, medical needs, and other
topics related to the international education at
the college in the English countryside. They
also determined the selection of American
faculty members.
Hannibal-LaGrange, which sends its
honors students overseas to study every other
year, chose Dr. Jane Schafer to be the HLG
representative at Harlaxton for the fall 2006
semester. She will be teaching the courses
“Children’s and Young Adult Literature” and
“Preschool and Beginning Reading Skills.”
Her husband, Dr. John Schafer, who is also a
professor at HLG, has received a sabbatical
to study international business and will
accompany his wife to England.
“I am eagerly anticipating the ‘Harlaxton
experience,’” says Dr. Jane Schafer. “I will have
the opportunity to live in the Harlaxton ‘castle’
(cooking and cleaning included!), teach
courses I love, travel extensively, and learn
about other people, cultures and educational
systems. My increased understanding of our
global society and educational practices can
then be shared in the HLG courses I teach.”
The Honors Program is open to all
students who received a minimum
composite ACT score of 27. Members must
complete a total of 24 hours of honors
classes while maintaining a standard GPA
of 3.0 each semester and a cumulative GPA
of 3.25 during the junior and senior years.
For more information about the Honors
Program, contact Dr. Kenneth McNutt at
There is no doubt that missions is important
to Hannibal-LaGrange College. HLG President
Woodrow Burt has said on numerous occasions that
it is his hope that Hannibal-LaGrange College will
be known as the “center of recruitment and training
for students called to missions” in the Midwest. In
August, HLG took one more step towards that goal
by creating the position of Director of Missions,
which has been filled by Marc Neddo, who brings to
the position a wealth of knowledge and experience.
Neddo was born and raised on the mission field
in France. His parents served as missionaries for 37
years, doing church planting, youth work, teaching,
and leadership development.
“Growing up as a ‘missionary kid’ you do not ‘do
missions’—you live missions.”
When Neddo came to the states for college, he was
not planning on going into missions as a career, though
he says he was open to the possibility. Neddo quickly
realized that ‘man makes his plans but the Lord directs
his steps.’ (Proverbs 16:9)
“Missions is not manufactured; it is either a part
of your living or it is not,” explained Neddo. In
college, his missions work took the form of mentoring
a disadvantaged eight-year-old who had survived the
foster care system. After completing college, Neddo
went on a mission trip to Russia, using soccer as a
platform to share the gospel.
“With the recent freedom in Russia, the spiritual
vacuum was evident, and many Russians were
inquisitive, if not thirsty,” said Neddo. “The most
searing memory from that trip is not our public
witnessing, but the way some Russians seemed to
devour the word of God in their language, as if it was
going straight to the empty space in their spirit.”
Since 1998, Neddo has been traveling back to
France to minister to the nation where he grew up. He
works at a camp that his parents helped establish in
the French Alps. He says that through the camp they
not only minister to people who would never “darken
a church door” but they also “are a tool to develop
and disciple French Christians through leadership
development, retreats, and specialized camps.”
“Working at the camp these past eight years I
have dealt with many Americans joining us for shortterm
mission work. I help them make some cultural
adjustments and steer them away from ‘American
evangelism techniques’ that the French tend to find
manipulative and offensive.”
At HLG, Neddo will use his practical experience
to demonstrate to students how to minister effectively
in other cultures. He is also exploring avenues
to strengthen and enlarge the missions program.
However, he is quick to note that he doesn’t have a
personal “agenda.”
“I believe one of the most common mistakes new
managers make when they come into a new position
is to change things for the sake of change or for the
sake of doing it “their way” without taking the time to
examine what is truly working and getting a good grasp
of what the organizational dynamics are.”
This doesn’t mean that Neddo doesn’t have shortterm
plans. He says that “I have noticed and examined
the student leaders who are already doing ministry and
it is excellent…we have the opportunity to provide
more leadership and consistency to our mission trips,
and to our missions focus and development.”
Neddo firmly believes that missions can be lifechanging
for college students “because they learn that
there is a world outside HLG, or outside the USA, that
does not fit into their current understanding of the
world.”
As much as Neddo has been a blessing to HLG’s
missions department, he says that the student
missionaries have far exceeded his expectations.
“They are not simply good, they are excellent…they
are being missionaries, rather than doing missions.
They know why they are ministering—that it’s not
about numbers, not about them, but about God and
individuals.”

A Long Way From Home . . .
n the Philippines, it is
common practice for
visitors to take the time
to wipe off their chairs before
sitting down and their plates
before eating off of them. Are
they insulting the host No,
they’re simply creating a “warm
atmosphere.”
In some tribes of Zimbabwe,
Bienvenida
it is a sign of friendship to
walk with your guest part of
his or her way home. How
far you walk together is a sign
of how deep the friendship
is. Therefore, the common
American practice of just
walking your guest to the door
can be seen as an insult.
While talking with a friend from Africa, you ask him if he thinks
your dress makes you look fat. Instead of being “polite” he tells
you that it’s not the dress, but the fact that you are fat. You’re deeply
insulted because you don’t realize that in your friend’s culture, he
paid you a compliment because he sees you as healthy and well
cared for.
For international students, these scenarios are only the
beginning. In addition to cultural differences, they have to deal with
being far from their family, learning a new language and tackling the
Dobrodoshli
tough job of being a college student in another country.
Hannibal-LaGrange College currently has 28 international
students from 18 countries, including Scotland, Belarus, Australia,
Norway, Rwanda and Spain. They represent six continents, eight
languages, and countless cultural and social traditions.
From the moment international students get off the airplane,
they must deal with culture shock. Most international students
listed language and the weather as the biggest differences; although
I
there’s nothing sadder than seeing a South American student
braving his first Missouri winter, there are many other subtle cultural
differences that these students must deal with.
Sebastian Gonzalez came to Hannibal-LaGrange from
Argentina, and after graduating in May 2005, he began working in
the computer services department at HLG. As someone who has
“survived” as an international student, Gonzalez had a lot of insight
into the dilemmas that are faced and how they can be overcome.
“Some of the students may face a cultural shock [when they
come to HLG] because the differences in the current and past
environment are so big that the student faces problems adapting to a
new environment,” said Gonzalez. “Different factors can add to this
situation: differences in language, religion, and culture. Also, there
are minor differences that hardly ever become a problem, such as
changes in the food and weather.”
Many students can deal with
America’s obsession with fast
food and material things, but they
have a hard time understanding
interpersonal relationships in the
states.
“There are a lot of things that
are different,” said Sy Kim, a
senior from South Korea. “Most
of all, I would say that we use
different tones and language
when we speak to our elders. I
had a hard time calling people
who are older than me by their
first name because it would be
impossible back home.”
In addition to cultural
differences, there are also
educational differences that international students must face.
Alla Shtyk, a Computer Information Systems major, noted many
academic differences between her home country of Belarus and the
United States.
“In Belarus,
one has to
complete their
education
once they’ve
started it,” said
Alla. “The
only thing is
that one can
take only
one year off
school (for
example, to work to pay for school.) Also, in Belarus students have
to take courses in a certain schedule assigned by the department
each semester, while in the US students are able to pick their own
courses. I like it that way better!”
Feature
One of the major issues
international students must
deal with is being not only
miles, but time zones away
from their loved ones.
Every international student
interviewed for this article
expressed that the thing they
missed the most about their
home country was not the
food or culture, but their
family and friends. “People
from other cultures, including
most Latin American
countries, have very strong
family ties and we are not used to moving when we go to college,”
said Gonzalez. “Getting homesick and missing friends is something
very common among international students, most during their first
and second semester.”
Caitlin Marie Symons, a soccer player from Scotland, was
working on the mission field when she met HLG’s women’s soccer
coach, Jason Nichols. Though Caitlin says she’s excited about being
at Hannibal, she still struggles daily with missing her home. “Even
though [HLG] is a home away from home, no place will ever be
home. I struggle most with my friendships. I miss my friends, my
church and my family. It’s not that people here aren’t friendly,
because they are. It’s just that it’s easy back home because my
friendships have so much
depth because of the history
and experiences we share.
I find it hard to get real
deep with my friends here,
probably partly because I
know I will be leaving in a
few years.”
Purintaxa
So what can we do
to
make the transition easier
Drs. John and Jane Schafer,
both professors at Hannibal-
LaGrange College, have
taken a personal interest
in HLG’s international
student population.
When teaching overseas in Europe, John said he saw first-hand
the impact of “adopting” international students. “In Europe, the
American students were adopted by families, and were invited
into their homes for holidays. I realized that this support system
was incredible, and we needed to do something like that at HLG.”
The Schafers don’t only encourage families to invite international
students into their homes—they lead by example by offering their
Fàilte
own home as a haven.
“When we have these students over, it’s a bonus for us,” said
Urakaza
John. “They are happy, they enjoy one another, and they have
good, clean fun. It’s amazing to me that even with homesickness
and language barriers, these students are so happy. They are truly
ladies and gentlemen.”
The Schafers efforts don’t go unnoticed. Sebastian Gonzalez
noted that “Dr. Schafer helped me so much while I was a student
and he continues to help international students in their adjusting
process. It is so much easier to go through the cultural differences
when you have someone to help you in the process and when you
feel that the university really cares for your special needs.”
Even if you can’t have international students in your home,
there are still plenty of opportunities to make them feel more at
home. The students interviewed expressed the desire for Americans
to be open-minded about other cultures. There were also a few
“practical” skills that international students wanted to learn from
their American friends.
“I would really like someone to teach me how to cook
popcorn, as all my attempts to do it are in the trash can!” said one
international student with a laugh.
David Erskine works with international students daily as HLG’s
Bem-vindo
men’s soccer coach. He added that it’s important that we encourage
international students to
not “isolate themselves.
Obviously it’s very easy to
associate with and gravitate
towards those who speak
the same language and
come from the same
cultural background. It is
not always so easy to reach
outside of that group.”
Hannibal-LaGrange
College has been richly
blessed and enhanced by
each international student
who have made HLG their
home over the years. Not
only have they opened our
eyes to other cultures and
traditions, but they have
also taught us not to take our country for granted.
“An international student once told me that we have no idea
how fortunate we are to have been born in America,” said Jane
Schafer. “I hope that our traditional students will take the time to
learn about what some of our international students have faced in
their home countries.”
SHANE & SHANE SHARE ABOUT
MUSIC, THE GOSPEL, AND SLOWING DOWN
& Shane
in concert
Shane
It’s 9 a.m. and Shane Everett, half of the Christian duo
Shane & Shane, is tired. His gravelly voice betrays the
fact that he spent the night on a bus traveling from Texas
to Tennessee. But he has retained his sense of humor.
“My favorite part about what we do is definitely driving
all night,” he says with a chuckle. “Seriously though, I
do love getting to see different places and meet people
across the country.”
It’s a good thing, too.
Each month Shane &
Shane play in packed out
arenas, intimate sanctuaries,
and noisy college
theatres. No matter the
venue, though, the message
remains the same.
“Our goal is to proclaim
the Gospel,” said Everett.
“Sometimes I think I enjoy
talking about the songs
more than singing them!”
But sing them he does.
Everett and Shane Barnard
began as independent artists
and quickly grew into
one of the fastest selling
Christian artists in history.
Previous projects, including
2003’s Carry Away
and 2004’s Upstairs, were
met with Top 10 sales
debuts. The duo, known
for their dueling acoustic guitars and tight harmonies,
experienced radio success with the impassioned “Be
Near,” and “Mercy Reigns,” and their newest album,
Clean, released in March, has been met with critical
acclaim.
The journey for Shane & Shane began in Texas,
where Barnard and Everett grew up “across the lake”
from each other but didn’t get to know each other until
college. Barnard emerged onto the music scene during
his senior year of college at Texas A & M. He has since
recorded three independent projects, and was tapped
for a track on The Awakening Compilation, Vol. 2, a
critically lauded Awakening Records’ various artists
independent project from 1998.
While Barnard is the self-proclaimed dreamer, his
colleague Shane Everett is the “streetwise musician.”
Everett studied agricultural business at Texas A & M
and made music on the side, first in a local pop cover
band, then crafting his own Christian music, including
three independent records. The two discovered each
other when Barnard had to borrow Everett’s guitar for
a show, and they became fast friends, deciding to join
forces to become what we know as Shane & Shane.
Since the beginning, Shane & Shane’s raw lyrics, often
drawn directly from scripture, have connected with
college students. Everett attributes that simply to the
fact that “we are communicating the word of God, and
I think a lot of times people are drawn to the Word. It’s
something more than just music, you know I’d like
to think that it’s the Lord doing something special in
people hearts, and not what we’re doing.”
Whatever it is, it seems to be working. Working so
well, in fact, that Everett says they are constantly asked
“how can we do what you’re doing”
“My advice to them is to just
seek the Lord,” said Everett. “I
don’t mean don’t work hard,
because you do need to hone your
craft and work at it, but it’s more
important to spend time with the
Lord than it is to run scales or write
songs. If we’re going hard after
what He wants, then He’s going to
direct us to it. I know that sounds
like a churchy answer, but I believe
it. Life on the road is a hard life...
it’s no picnic. You’ve got to be
grounded in the Lord.”
Everett says that part of that
grounding for Shane & Shane has
come from their home church, The
Village Church, and specifically
from their pastor, who remains active
in their ministry.
“Our pastor is super involved in
what we do. We stay connected
with home via phone when we’re
out on tour, and we’ve got a great
team of supporters.”
Even group support doesn’t lessen the hectic life on
the road. Everett says it’s a constant struggle to just
slow down and enjoy the life he has been created for.
“Shane [Barnard] just wrote a song that’s based on
Psalm 90, where it talks about numbering our days,
and how life is so fleeting,”said Everett. “I want that
mindset to really enjoy life in the Lord. I don’t want to
waste a day satisfied with what the world says is success
or what the world says is joy. I want to rest in the
Lord, in friends, in family, and in life.”
Shane & Shane were in concert at Hannibal-La-
Grange College on Wednesday, August 31 as part of
HLG’s Welcome Week activities.
HLG STUDENTS SPEND FALL
BREAK IN NEW ORLEANS
Although the images of the destruction from Hurricane
Katrina are slowly fading from the nation’s
television screens, 11 students from Hannibal-La-
Grange College have a renewed visual of the devastation.
Since the first reports of the catastrophic
storm, HLG has been making plans to send a team
to New Orleans to assist with clean-up and disaster
relief. Over Fall Break, they were finally able to put
those plans into action.
“My initial reaction to the hurricane was that was
just another storm that had hit the coast,” said Justin
Martin, an elementary education major from Boonville,
MO. “At first, I didn’t realize the impact that
this storm was having. The news began to spread
and I eventually began to realize the detrimental
impact. My heart began to break with what I saw. I
made the decision that I would try my hardest to go
if there was a mission team going down there.”
Marc Neddo, HLG’s director of missions, said
that the team’s job was to “serve as slaves and show
God’s love and grace in simple practical ways.” The
team was assigned to work in the supply distribution
tent where upwards of 1,000 cars filed by each day
to receive basic supplies. Work began at 8:30 each
morning and lasted until 7 p.m.
“It was taxing work in many ways,” said Neddo.
“But the students never let up, serving relentlessly,
turning down break times, and jumping at the opportunity
to do extra.”
HLG students spent the bulk of their time passing
out items and serving as greeters outside the lot.
Whitney Walters, from Pana, IL, said she was able to
spend several hours a day “simply talking to people
and praying for them and sympathizing with them...”
“Being a people person, it was such a blessing to
be able to spend most of my day talking and sharing
with people,” said Walters. “To see the smiling faces
through the broken spirits was a pretty awesome sight
to see.”
Dana Whitt, a special education major from Trenton,
MO, said that even though the team arrived two
months after the hurricane, there was still plenty of
work to be done. “Trees were still down, power lines
were still destroyed...We went inside a church where
the pews were strewn all over the sanctuary and a piano
was upside down on the stage,” remembers Whitt.
“The flood line was higher than twice my height. I
guess I never thought about that kind of aftermath
before. I couldn’t help but wonder how the people of
that city could possibly have any hope for the future.
However, I am thankful that God is hope when we are
hopeless.”
Neddo concluded that “we were but worthy slaves
simply doing what we ought to do, sharing the grace
and love of God in unpretentious, practical ways. Jesus
meant it when he said: ‘In as much as you have done it
unto the least of these, you have done unto me.’ (Matthew
25:40)”
President’s Report
2005 President’s Report
The 2004-2005 academic year was right on pace with the previous record enrollment year. We continue to find creative and
resourceful ways to accommodate students and staff. With the expansion of the business offices, the Innovative Program offices
moved to the Hut and Mary Lou Green Center located adjacent to the main campus. This move has proven beneficial to the
growth of the ADVANCE (Adult Continuing Education) program.
Along with the restructuring of office space, the remodeling project on the cafeteria in the Partee Center was completed in the
summer of 2005. The students were welcomed back to campus with a new look and a new extended meal service. Other
projects including roofing, replacement windows, and general repair were completed on residential housing units.
Hannibal-LaGrange College depends on the generous gifts of its supporters to fund not only our growing capital and endowment
needs, but also a portion of our daily operations budget.
The leadership of Hannibal-LaGrange College continues to take careful steps to assure that all funds are used wisely in order to
provide the best possible education for HLG students. The Hannibal-LaGrange College community expresses their thanks to all
the wonderful friends of the college as they continue to share financially to support the work and vision of this fine institution.
The Strategic Planning Team of Hannibal-LaGrange College was
established to identify and recommend the implementation of goals
supportive of the mission and vision statements of the college.
The Strategic Planning Team has been involved in many
important areas again this year, including support for the successful
accreditation visit in the spring of 2005. The Strategic Planning
process was very much a part of this visit and team members were
interviewed by the accreditation team, providing information
important to the overall success of the college in this evaluation.
The Strategic Planning Team also continues to support progress
toward the goal of having 600 resident students by 2009,
improvement of campus facilities, access for students to technology
to enhance their educational experience, and efforts to increase
overall academic excellence of the college.
The strategic planning process is vitally important to the success
of the college. The Strategic Planning Team will continue to make
is grateful to those donors who are providing funds for scholarships, academic and athletic
programs, and our operating budget. With their support, they have helped us fulfill our
mission of providing students with the finest liberal arts education in a caring Christian
environment.
The gift clubs listed on the following pages are based on annual and cumulative gifts,
as well as other areas of support. Gifts may be given to honor or memorialize family and
friends, or they may help support the day-to-day operation of the college. Every effort is
Institutional Advancement
Returns
by Connie Benson ‘94 • Vice President for Institutional Advancement
Institutional Advancement
One of the newest residents in Pulliam Hall is an old
friend who found a home at LaGrange College before it
merged with Hannibal College in 1928. Its ivory keys hold
a tale of HLG’s history, passed down from generation to
generation in the Crouch family. Not only does the female
dormitory now have a lovely instrument that is known for
its excellence, but it also has a piece of the college’s history
adorning its lobby as a perfect antique accent to the old
brick building that so many girls have grown to love.
In early 2005, Gary Crouch of Denver, Colorado who
had recently retired decided to evaluate his personal
belongings “with the goal of downsizing” and as he
assessed his old family treasures, he came across a Steinway
square grand piano. Its keys were a little out of tune but the
piano itself was still in amazing condition for its age.
The old instrument, which has survived nearly a century,
was willed to him by his great Aunt Ruth upon her death in
LaGrange, MO in 1967 and traveled from its native Missouri
out to Colorado. His aunt, Mrs. Ruth (Crouch) Loudermilk,
happened to be the daughter of Charles Crouch, the former
city mayor of LaGrange and she had inherited the Steinway
from her mother, Susan (Hagood) Crouch, who was Charles’s
wife. Susan had been given the piano when she was around
fifteen-years old and since then, it continued to be passed
down within the family.
After discovering the piano and old documents that
connected his family with HLG, Gary Crouch decided to
generously donate his piano to the college. The historical
link of this Steinway goes back to the time when LaGrange
College was located in its original home, LaGrange, MO,
and John Crouch, the brother of Charles Crouch, was the
president of the college.
Under the leadership of John Crouch, LaGrange College
moved to Hannibal and was re-named Hannibal-LaGrange
College, a four-year Christian liberal arts college that sits on
the outskirts of Hannibal, Missouri.
Due to Gary Crouch’s generosity, the piano that belonged
to a family so important in the history of HLG is now
available on campus for students to enjoy. In late October of
2005, Gary Crouch and his brother, Paul, were able to visit
the college and see their family’s old piano situated in its new
home where it can continue to be a part of HLG history.
Portfolio, investments, Dow Jones, stocks,
mutual funds, life insurance. Are these words
part of your daily vocabulary Today our
culture is focused on growing our retirement
fund and getting big investments on our money,
which is great, but do we always give the credit
for our financial blessings to God, or do we
pat ourselves on the back and say what great
financial investors we are When our portfolios
begin to make some progress and we see the numbers grow, do we have a tendency to increase our budget
so we can spend more, or do we step back and say, “We can give more.” I have found over the years that you
can’t out give God.
With each phase of life, our financial picture changes. Whether married or not, with age we have various
needs for each stage of life. As I visit with individuals weekly, I enjoy hearing the encouraging stories of why
and how individuals want to give to the college. As you read through this edition, you will see the list of our
donors who give now and the donors who have remembered HLG in their estates. The donors listed in the
Steeple Society have included us in their estate plans through various gifting
tools, one of which is life insurance.
A life insurance policy is an excellent way of giving and leaving a
legacy. Life insurance policies are a vital part of estate planning to help
provide for the family at the time of death. Providing for your family
should be a priority in your estate planning. It is also a wonderful
way of leaving dollars with a small initial investment, especially if you
purchase a life insurance policy when you are young and in good
health. As the years go by and circumstances change, you may not
have the same need for all or parts of your coverage. Consider naming
Hannibal-LaGrange College the beneficiary of a percentage of your policy.
What a wonderful way to leave a legacy.
I want to thank our donors for sharing your portfolios with
Hannibal-LaGrange College. Generous and joyful givers, good
stewards, and a blessing to all, are words to describe you.
We thank you for investing your portfolios in the lives of our
students and in God’s kingdom.

One of the most inspiring comments I have ever heard from someone who was
discussing their will was this:
“I’ve tithed all my life here on Earth, might as well keep on
tithing when I go home to Heaven.”
You can continue your generous support of our community of faith at
Hannibal-LaGrange College by remembering HLG in your will or trust. Many of
you already have, as evidenced by your membership in the Steeple Society.
Membership in the Steeple Society is easy enough to accomplish: Once you
have made provision for Hannibal-LaGrange College in your will or trust, please
notify us through the Office of Institutional Advancement. If you would like us
to maintain your anonymity, we will be happy to do so.
Your generous support has enabled us to provide state-of-the-art facilities,
hire award-winning professors, and provide a stable and caring home away
from home for thousands of students. Your continued support will allow us
to maintain existing facilities, expand course offerings, provide better financial aid to deserving students, and send our
students to even more missions destinations.
Thank you for your past support of Hannibal-LaGrange College. If you would like more information about the
Homecoming, 2005 is history and I am already meeting
and planning for next year. We had great weather, a lot of fun,
and HLG won both basketball games! I hope that I can count
on you to be here next year! Just a reminder--homecoming
will be November 3-4, 2006.
Here are some things you’ll want to be watching for in
the near future. The first thing on the agenda for 2006 is a
planning meeting in January with an alumna who wants to give
back to HLG by helping with our Fun Run at Homecoming.
Being a marathon runner herself, she wants to put our 5k
event on the map for fellow enthusiasts. We want to make
this a family event for alumni, so be sure and watch for more
information about the event in your
Reflections magazine, and on
the college website.
Plans are underway for an
Alumni Phonathon during
the month of February.
Several alumni will receive
a telephone call from an
HLG student who will share
some of the accomplishments,
aspirations, and needs of the
college. Please take some
time with the caller to share
your advice and stories of campus,
along with a generous pledge
for Hannibal-LaGrange
College’s Alumni
Scholarship Fund.
Through the Reflections
articles the last few
months, several alumni
have shared with
us how HLG has
influenced their lives. I
am sure that many of you have a similar experience to share.
If these articles have sparked a memory, or a feeling of
gratitude toward HLG, why not think about helping a new
generation of students enjoy the great experiences and the
benefits like you and I had of an excellent education at HLG.
Phonathon calls will be made during evening hours between
February 2 and 28. Get connected!
Another exciting change affecting alumni is that we will
be putting into place the opportunity for alumni to receive
a quarterly college e-mail newsletter. Since Reflections
magazine is only printed two times a year, the email newsletter
will help us keep better connected and updated. We will be
able to let you know about sports events in your area, choir
tours, job placement opportunities, and opportunity to share
prayer requests and needs. Keeping in touch via email will
be very beneficial to the alumni office. So, get ready to send
me your e-mail address! More information will be posted on
www.hlg.edu.
We have made a decision regarding printing addresses in
our Alumni News. Due to the dangerous social climate we are
living in, if you would prefer not to have your address listed,
please indicate when you send your update. Thank you for
your attention to this matter.
I want to take this opportunity to encourage you and tell
you how proud I am of all our HLG alumni! I read about you,
and hear about you from others when I am “out and about.”
At homecoming we acknowledged three outstanding HLG
alumni who have made their mark in their profession, their
church, and their communities. They give us a glimpse of how
HLG has impacted lives and how those lives are changing
our world. Congratulations to these deserving recipients! Be
thinking of someone you’d like to nominate for 2006. May
God richly bless you and your family in 2006, and I will look
forward to hearing from you.
Booster Banquet
Mending
Wings
Alumni Profile
Wally Magdangal doesn’t look like a
representative for the persecuted church. His
clothes are impeccable, his smile is quick and his
laugh is contagious. But his story is one of fear,
torture, pain and, ultimately, hope.
Magdangal, who spoke at this year’s Booster
Banquet at Hannibal-LaGrange College, began
his ministry in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in the
early 1980s. By 1992 Magdangal and his wife,
Matilda, were leading the largest underground
church in Saudi Arabia, with 300-500 people
in attendance each week, often under the cover
of darkness in desert caves. Because of the
Muslim stronghold and religious persecution in
the country, Magdangal was named one of the
most wanted men by the Saudi government, and
in October 1992 he was arrested for the crime
of blasphemy. He was sentenced to death by
public hanging; the date for his execution was
December 25th.
“On the night of my abduction, my captors
took my possessions, they tore me from the arms
of my wife and daughter and they destroyed my
hope,” recalled Magdangal. “I woke up to a
nightmare.”
Magdangal’s nightmare would last for nearly
three months, during which he was beaten,
mocked, shamed and asked to renounce his faith.
However, his faith was the one thing that never
wavered.
“In times of crisis and persecution I learned
that a Christian is forced to unceasing prayer,
and at the same time on equal note, unhindered
praise and worship,” explained Magdangal.
“[When asked] to renounce my faith, my only
response was: how can I give up on my Savior,
He who died for someone like me.”
One particular time of persecution involved
beatings that lasted nearly three hours straight.
But instead of feeling anger towards his
persecutors, Magdangal said he felt only pity.
“My torturers were delighted in flogging
me...and thrilled to beat me up from the top of
my head to the soles of my feet,” he recalled. “I
watched the horrific effects of religious fanaticism
“In times of crisis and persecution, I learned that
a Christian is forced to unceasing prayer.”
in front of me...and amazingly my
heart broke for my torturers and I
shed tears on their behalf, feeling
sorry that these people had been
in bondage and had been led to
believe a lie... It is the grace of
God that would enable a person
like me to be able to look at them
from a different perspective and
feel nothing but pity and grief on
their behalf.”
Magdangal was released on
December 24, just one day before
he was to be executed. He and
his family were forced to leave the
country, and they now reside in
California where Magdangal serves
as the founder and president of
Christians in Crisis, a ministry that
seeks to challenge and encourage
the church to focus on the plight
of the persecuted Christians of our
world.
“We need to reach the world
with the Gospel message so the
world will know. So the world
will know that there are Christians
under persecution. The world will
know that there are persecutors
blinded and oppressed by religion
and oppressive governments. The
world may know that beyond all
this knowledge there is a God who
so loved the world that He gave his
only begotten son that whosoever
believes shall not perish but have
everlasting life. The world will
know there are Christians that are
willing to pay the price, that we
will live for the Christ who died for
us. So the world will know there is
a Christian college like Hannibal-
LaGrange that can stand out in the
midst of a crooked generation...”
Edward
Marquette is
the picture of
success. He is
a partner in the
Kansas City office
of Sonnenschein
Nath & Rosenthal
LLP, a national law
firm with over 700
lawyers in nine
cities. For the past
decade, Marquette
has been listed
annually in “The
Best Lawyers
in America”
for intellectual property. As a student at the University of
Missouri he was a member of not one, but two honorary
fraternities, and he went on to receive his Juris Doctorate
Cum Laude from Harvard Law School.
But 36 years ago, a devastating hunting accident left
Marquette, then a senior in high school, lost, confused—and
blind. The accident rattled his beliefs, offset his education
plans, and led him to Hannibal-LaGrange College.
“I came to Hannibal-LaGrange straight out of a
rehabilitation center,” remembers Marquette.
“Slightly more than a year earlier,
at age 17, I was in a hunting
accident that took my
sight. Prior to the accident,
I had planned to enroll at
the University of Missouri in
Rolla and pursue a degree in Nuclear
Physics.”
Marquette grew up in Shelby County, Missouri, and was
always aware of HLG. After his accident, he enrolled in a
rehabilitation program in Topeka, Kansas. While there, he
learned that he qualified for the college preparatory program.
Being close to home, HLG seemed like a safe choice to
Marquette.
When Marquette started school at HLG, he says the one
“[Hannibal-LaGrange] was a place where
everyone genuinely wanted you to succeed,
it was a leadership incubator.”
thing he was lacking was self-confidence.
“I had done relatively well in high school, but I never
bothered to study. I was far too busy having fun and doing
sports. When I lost my sight December of my senior year, I
lost my confidence along with it. When I came to HLG my
cocky self-confidence had been shattered.”
Marquette had become a Christian while in rehabilitation,
so he came to HLG, not only as a scared young man reeling
from incredible life changes, but also as a new Christian,
struggling to understand the new faith he clung to.
“Hannibal-LaGrange was a safe place for me to try my
bruised and mending wings. It was a place where everyone
genuinely wanted you to succeed; it was a leadership
incubator.”
Marquette slowly began to regain his confidence, and
he eventually became Hannibal-LaGrange College student
body president. He fondly remembers student body elections
when Dan Murphy, a close friend, introduced him to the
student body.
“Dan could not do things in any kind of conventional
way,” said Marquette. “Late for his turn at introductions, Dan
made a dramatic entry, not dressed in any traditional way,
but as the Jonathan Winters character, Maude Fricker. My
‘introduction’ was, in reality, a comedy routine. Had Dean
Kepley known what Dan had planned, I’m sure he would
have discouraged the caper, but as it was, all he could do was
laugh with everyone else. Believe me, that was
a hard act to follow!”
Marquette went on to
graduate from HLG in 1971
with a 4.0, and he served as
Valedictorian of his graduating
class. From there, he received a
BA in Economics from the University
of Missouri at Columbia and his law degree from Harvard.
Though his adventures have taken him far from his humble
beginnings, he still fondly remembers his days at HLG.
“My experiences at Hannibal-LaGrange College gave me
the confidence I needed to use the leadership gifts God had
given me. I have myriad fond memories of Hannibal. There
will always be a warm and tender spot in my heart for good
old HLG.”

The Arts
The Arts
Visual Art
In 2005 the Art Department hosted a number of talented artists
in the Hagerman Art Gallery. In September, work was presented
by HLG’s art faculty, including work by Robin Stone, head of
the art department, Carol Burns, adjunct art instructor and Don
Stevenson, HLG’s newest art professor.
In October, Hannibal-LaGrange College hosted a special art
exhibit highlighting the work of Len Moss. Moss’ exhibit featured
his original paintings that present scenes from both his personal
trips and his travels with the Navy. Throughout his life, Moss
worked as a draftsman, a commercial artist, a crewman aboard a
fishing schooner, and an officer and naval aviator in the U.S. Navy.
He is a veteran of WWII, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.
Moss and his wife, Norma, were avid travelers, and he was always
careful to take his sketchbook and camera along to capture the
images and details he would need later for his paintings. After he
retired, Moss moved back to Missouri to his wife’s hometown of
Hannibal. He built a house with his brother-in-law where he now
lives while working on his art. His home is an exhibit of both his
Heather own art and and the art Kevin of others. McSmith
dressed as Biblegirl and Sinister
November’s guest artists were Anne Campfield and Carol
Nichols. The show featured watercolors by Quincy artist
Campfield. Born and educated in Paris, Campfield is a
professional artist versatile in many media. She is recognized for
her renditions of historical buildings, businesses and private homes
in the tri-state area and Arizona. Campfield has exhibited in many
national juried shows and has won many awards locally and
nationally.
Nichols, also of Quincy, is an associate faculty of John Wood
On December 1-3, HLG’s Parker Theatre was overtaken by big
bands and crooners as the Hannibal-LaGrange College theatre and
music departments presented “The 1940’s Radio Hour,” a musical
by Walton Jones.
The “1940’s Radio Hour” portrays
the final Christmas broadcast of
the Mutual Manhattan Variety
Cavalcade on New York radio
station WOV in 1942. The
musical captures the spirit
of a nation struggling to
maintain its traditions in a
time of war, complete with
performances from that
era, including “That Old
Black Magic,” “Boogie
Woogie Bugle Boy from
Company B” and a
variety of Christmas
classics.
Community College. She has
studied watercolor since 1981,
and her artwork incorporates
watercolor compositions with
calligraphy work. She enhances
a poem or quote with watercolor
design to create an interpretive
piece of art.
In December, HLG’s art
department hosted an exhibit by
Ewing, Missouri native Kimberly
Shinn. Shinn uses primarily
acrylics, and describes her style
as “mainly realistic...I paint
from photographs that I have taken myself and I like a lot of looser
styles...” Shinn began painting 14 years ago, but took a break after
starting a family. In 2000 she decided to give it another try, and
has been at it for the past five years.
In January, HLG hosted guest artists Willy Richmond and
Music Theatre
“I remember quite fondly how it was to sit listening to the
music and stories coming out of our old battery powered radio as
a boy,” said Jerry Thomason, Professor of Theatre at HLG. “In those
days it was only in my imagination that I could put pictures with
those sounds. Little did I know that the voices were coming from
a small room somewhere, with only a few individuals doing all the
characters and a prop person making all the sounds.”
Theatre allows all of us to experience the world of midtwentieth
century radio in these United States of America during its
golden era,” concluded Thomason.
The cast of “The 1940’s Radio Hour” included: Krista Tettaton,
Angie Lee, Leslie Beauchamp, Amanda Mae Dobson, Ben Dixon,
Jordan Feeler, Sean Freeman, Chris Sheldon, Russell Minnick,
Cameron Beckerdite, Matt Castor, Scott Boltinghouse, Bryan
Colbert, and Dave Corkern. Jerry Thomason will serve as Director,
Jane Griffen as Musical Director, and McKinzie Gray as Assistant
to the Director. In addition, the Jazz Band provided the show’s
music.
IT’S WHY WE’RE HERE
Sports
At Hannibal-LaGrange College, athletics isn’t
just about winning games and breaking records—
it’s also about recruiting and molding athletes into
men and women of character.
“One of our coaching philosophies in the
athletic department is ‘Coaching is what you
do, but it’s not why you are here’,” said Dr. Tom
Hufty, Vice President for Collegiate Affairs and
administrator for the athletic department at HLG.
“Each coach has a responsibility to pour
themselves into the lives of students that God
gives them. Not only teaching them how to be
successful on the field and on the court, but how
to be a success in life,” said Hufty. “Because of
this mandate, we look for opportunities to involve
our teams in service projects and mission trips.”
Each sports team at HLG participates in
community service projects throughout the year.
In the summer, student athletes assist coaches
with youth camps for the Hannibal community.
In the summer of 2005, hundreds of children and
youth were on campus learning basic sports skills
and being mentored by HLG students.
During the school year sporting teams
take time from practice and games to assist
with YMCA camps and to provide one-onone
attention to special needs groups such as
Mississippi Valley State School, a school in
Hannibal for severely handicapped children.
Every spring they assist the Gatekeepers program
by providing mini sports camps for local
schoolchildren.
It was another exciting season for Trojan men’s soccer fans.
With an overall record of 12-2-5 and a conference record of
4-1-2, the HLG men’s soccer team wowed the crowds at every
game.
“The season was characterized by a team which was
strongly united, played with passion, executed the game
plan and enjoyed the outcomes of their focused dedication
and preparation,” said Head Coach Dave Erskine. The team
experienced several wins which included their first ever win
against top 25 ranked Columbia College in the play-offs.
Team members JP Wunder, Matt Gordon, and David
Senchermes were awarded AMC All-Conference honors
while Miguel Ramirez, Travis Hansen, and Austin McDowell
all received AMC Honorable Mention nods. Matt Gordon
received the NAIA All-America Scholar Athlete award.
The Trojan men’s soccer team is not only successful on the
field; they are in high demand off the field as well. Throughout
the year, the team is invited to area elementary schools to
lead soccer clinics for children. Both the players and the
participants enjoy these clinics.
The outlook for next year’s team is strong. Coach Erskine
will begin next season with a returning core of key starting
players. Get ready for another exciting season!
An indicator marking the end of an athletic team season is the absence
of practice. Not so with the 2005 Trojan women’s soccer team. Within a
week of final play, individual players were seen practicing and preparing
themselves for next season. “It was a disappointing season in terms of
record,” said Head Coach Jason Nichols as he reflected on the 2-14-1
overall season record. “However, in spite of some disappointment and
challenging times with not winning like we desire, it was a season like no
other in terms of unity and having a solid group of young ladies who are
on board with the vision of this team,” continued Nichols. “Team unity is
often a by product of winning, but the test comes with losing, and amidst
that, the players continued to press on and encourage each other daily
and did their best to take one game at a time.”
The lady Trojans played Trinity International University, a top 25 NAIA
team to an 0-1 defeat with less than two minutes to play. “Although we
were outmatched with talent, the ladies played with a resolve to stick
to our game plan
and gave 100%
for 90 minutes,”
said Nichols.
“Afterwards, both
teams gathered
together to pray
and sing a song of
worship together
before departing. It
was extra special
playing a very good
team who also
were playing for
God’s glory.”
Over fall break,
the team traveled
to Arizona to play
Embry-Riddle
Aeronautical
University (NAIA)
and Grand
Canyon University
(NCAA Div. II).
Even though the
Trojans fell to both
teams, they still
considered the trip
the highlight of the
season. “While
there, we were able to serve at the local Salvation Army warehouse
sorting goods for Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita victims,” said
Nichols. “It was such a joy to coach a group of young ladies who had a
sincere desire to represent Christ through the platform of soccer.” While
in Arizona, the team had the opportunity to visit the Grand Canyon and
shared a special time of worship and testimony on the south rim of the
canyon. “It was a truly special time that none of us will forget,” shared
Nichols.
The 2005 season was a rebuilding year represented by many young
players. Coach Nichols has set goals toward a winning 2006 season by
adding players who will add depth and increase the level of intensity and
competition. “I’m very excited about the prospective student-athletes I
am currently recruiting and anticipate a great season,” adds Nichols. “I’m
convinced that as long as we keep our mission before us ‘...to pursue
whole-hearted excellence that will develop young women of maximum
impact for Christ in their current and future roles...’ that HLG women’s
soccer will honor God.”
The men’s and women’s cross country teams began the 2005
season with a new skipper. Head Coach Brad Lingafelter began his
duties at HLG in July 2005 and hit the road running—literally.
Coach Lingafelter was impressed with his teams from the start.
“Of all the sports I have coached, Cross Country is the one that
stands out the most for the importance of self-motivation,” continued
Lingafelter. “If a coach has to motivate a young man or woman to
run ten miles, it is going to be a long season. Our kids craved it. They
wanted to improve every day and they did,” said Lingafelter.
The teams worked together and supported one another on a daily
basis, and the meets revealed the results of their hard work. “Each
individual meet is a time trial against your personal best time,”
explained Lingafelter. “Our philosophy is simply being better today
than we were yesterday.”
Both teams had several top three finishes and represented HLG
extremely well in the regional meet which is considered one of the
strongest regions in the country.
With the men finishing 7th in a
field of 12 teams and the women
taking a 10th place finish, the
Trojan Cross Country teams
made a respectable showing at
every meet.
“The camaraderie on both
teams made the season very
enjoyable. Everyone genuinely
cared about the other members
of the team and how they
were performing. Every runner
Volleyball
Going into the 2005 season, the Lady Trojan Volleyball team knew
that the schedule would be a challenging one. Although several
players returned for the 2005 season, many would have to adjust
to moving to a new position and others would be in the line-up for
the first time. A rocky start to the season confirmed their forecast,
however, the team improved with every match. “The most exciting
aspect of our season cannot be described in terms of wins and losses,
but in the way we continued to strive to improve throughout the
season. This persistence paid off as we finished the season with some
very strong showings,” said Head Coach Dan Hurst.
Intensity and determination were traits that described the strength
of the 2005 squad. “Many times we faced bigger and stronger teams
physically and we were able to compete with them because of these
traits,” said Hurst. “Our most rewarding performance came against
Williams Baptist in our second to last conference match of the season.
We had lost to them earlier at their place in a close five game match.
However, this time we were at home (Homecoming ’05) and beat
them convincingly in three games,” added Hurst. “Although our
record (7-26 overall) did not show it, we played our best down the
final stretch of the season. The second time through the conference
schedule, we played each team better.”
The 2005 season saw the end of the careers for four seniors. Beth
Frame, Amber Polson, Jessica Pope, and Katie Spears were key players
for Coach Hurst. “They each played in over 80% of the games and
provided tremendous leadership this final season.”
Returning next year will be four juniors, leading hitter Kari
improved their time
from the start of the
season to the end,”
added Lingafelter. “I
was very proud of
them for that.”
The 2006 season
will be one of
rebuilding for the
Lady Trojan team.
Lingafelter will lose
all but two runners
for next season. “The first goal is to recruit almost an entirely new
women’s team,” said Lingafelter. The men’s team will return a strong
core next year and Lingafelter plans to carry the momentum from this
season into next season. “As of right now we are waiting to finalize
the process, but all indications are that we will be well represented by
a great freshmen class as well as some junior college transfers.”
Reflecting on the 2005 season, Coach Lingafelter was most
impressed with the quality of students that participated in the cross
country program. “In my nine years of coaching, I can honestly say
that this is the best group of kids I have ever worked with and I always
knew that they represented HLG with the utmost class.”
Boeckman (AMC 2nd
Team All-Conference),
setter Stephanie
Lawrence, libero
Ashley Firebaugh, and
hitter Ashley Vink.
Sophomores Kathryn
Heyer and Ashlee
Purpura and freshmen
Kara Neeley and Casey
Zellers will bring
significant experience to
the 2006 squad. Coach
Hurst has set a goal to
finish the 2006 season with a .500 or better record, to finish in the top
half of the conference and to advance to at least the second round of
the AMC tournament.
Reflecting on the 2005 team Coach Hurst shared, “The thing I am
most proud of about this team is the way they demonstrated a true
Christian attitude both on the court and off. So many times in today’s
society we hear about the negative actions of athletes. It’s refreshing
to see teams such as this one who represent the true meaning of
student-athletes.”
