it is hard for me to believe...<br />
that the <strong>Harford</strong> <strong>County</strong> <strong>Public</strong> <strong>Library</strong> (HCPL) Foundation<br />
is in its eleventh year of existence.<br />
The Foundation has seen dramatic growth from its inception<br />
and 2010 has proven to be the biggest year to date both<br />
in funds raised and in the ambitiousness of the projects it<br />
supported. The Foundation’s board members represent<br />
every aspect of the <strong>Harford</strong> <strong>County</strong> community and bring<br />
a wealth of experience to the table. They are tireless in<br />
their efforts to raise funds and advocate for the library. Our<br />
business partners have stepped up again this year, in spite of<br />
a very challenging economy, and joined the many individual<br />
members of the community who showed their support for<br />
the library by continuing to donate, or contributed for the<br />
first time.<br />
Every year the Foundation provides tremendous support to<br />
the Summer Reading Program and every year the number<br />
of children and teens who participate grows. A recent study<br />
by Dominican University has shown that, “Students who<br />
participated in the public library summer reading program<br />
scored higher on reading achievement tests at the<br />
beginning of the next school year than those students<br />
who did not participate and they gained in other ways<br />
as well.” In 2010, the Foundation provided incentives to<br />
18,027 youth who registered and books or gift cards to<br />
8,736 youth who completed. Their support is essential<br />
to growing these numbers.<br />
This year the library was awarded the opportunity to host<br />
the, “Winds and Words of War: Posters and Prints from the<br />
San Antonio <strong>Public</strong> <strong>Library</strong> Collection.” The exhibit featured<br />
forty original World War I posters displayed in two library<br />
branches, Bel Air and Jarrettsville. The library launched a<br />
multi-faceted initiative to support the exhibit. It included<br />
author events, a film series, book discussions for all ages,<br />
and a musical event. Over 2,800 people viewed the exhibit<br />
or attended programs that complimented it. The<br />
Foundation board supported this project and provided the<br />
funds to display the exhibit, train the docents and bring the<br />
curator to <strong>Harford</strong> <strong>County</strong>. In addition, many Foundation<br />
members volunteered their time to be docents, arrange<br />
exhibit schedules and work on the planning committee.<br />
HCPL would not have been able to bring this wonderful<br />
exhibit to <strong>Harford</strong> <strong>County</strong> had it not been for the<br />
commitment and hard work of the Foundation and<br />
Vanessa Milio, the Foundation Director, who put many<br />
hours into making it a success.<br />
In closing, as I look forward to retirement, I am so proud<br />
to have been a part of this great library system for the<br />
past thirteen and a half years and so thankful to all of the<br />
Foundation members who have helped to grow this strong<br />
organization. Over the years the Foundation has funded<br />
many initiatives and enabled us to provide additional funds<br />
to ongoing services, including the Silver Reader, the Rolling<br />
Reader. They have launched building campaigns for a<br />
number of new buildings allowing the <strong>Library</strong> to purchase<br />
many items and materials that would not otherwise<br />
be available.<br />
I am so grateful for all of the wonderful people I have met<br />
who have served on the Foundation Board and have built<br />
lasting friendships with over the years.<br />

we have had at the <strong>Harford</strong> <strong>County</strong> <strong>Public</strong> <strong>Library</strong> (HCPL)<br />
Foundation. Our numbers certainly speak for themselves:<br />
increases in the number of donors to the Foundation,<br />
increases in the number of donations made by those<br />
donors, increases in dollars raised to support the <strong>Library</strong>.<br />
All of those are valued and valuable statistics. However,<br />
they don’t speak to the creative sparks that flew this<br />
year from board members, staff and community leaders.<br />
In August, we took the opportunity to have nationally<br />
recognized, Bel Air native, Julienne Irwin, perform at a<br />
summer concert to raise funds to support the Summer<br />
Reading Program. With the help of many local business<br />
leaders and community partners we had a picture perfect<br />
day with families enjoying an evening on the lawn, listening<br />
to a concert and spending time together.<br />
Our annual gala, held in November, exceeded expectations<br />
with a sell-out crowd and record financial support. Our<br />
theme, “invent: an evening in the stacks” highlighted the<br />
<strong>Library</strong>’s commitment to STEM (Science, Technology,<br />
Engineering and Math) education for all ages; specifically<br />
through the LEAP, Science is Fun! program and kits housed<br />
at the Edgewood Branch of HCPL.<br />
This past winter we celebrated the re-opening of the<br />
stunningly beautiful Whiteford Branch of HCPL. Our<br />
fundraising efforts over the past two years, in partnership<br />
with the North <strong>Harford</strong> Friends, raised funds to <strong>create</strong> the<br />
interactive children’s area and fully equipped teen room.<br />
The branch is a true community hub for the northern<br />
end of our county and one we were proud to support.<br />
In March, the Foundation board of directors partnered with<br />
the <strong>Library</strong> to produce and promote a multi-faceted exhibit<br />
highlighting a collection of WWI posters titled, “Winds &<br />
Words of War: Posters and Prints from the San Antonio<br />
<strong>Public</strong> <strong>Library</strong> Foundation.” Through a series of exhibitions,<br />
events and programs we provided the opportunity for<br />
thousands of attendees to re-connect with an important<br />
piece of our history.<br />
I am honored to represent the HCPL Foundation in the<br />
community. Our organization, with a dynamic board of<br />
directors, dedicated community volunteers and loyal<br />
donors, has demonstrated its true belief that all libraries<br />
have the power to <strong>create</strong> a spark in all of us.<br />
This is your community, your library and, now more<br />
than ever, you do make a difference!<br />
