Chest Pains
A Novel
Janet Nichols Lynch
In this zany satiric novel, Californian Gordon Clay, a failed
musician turned college music instructor, overcomes a midlife
crisis, helped by unlikely characters who include a
marathon-running ex-nun and a small boy. The story is
framed by the worlds of music, religious faith, academia and
marathons—all known first-hand by the author. It is a tale
that begins with professional disappointment, loneliness and
mid-life angst—conditions known well by many readers. Yet
the author succeeds in exploring these somber circumstances
with whimsy, humor and irony.
Gordon, who once dreamed of a career as a double bass
player, finds little pleasure in life, except for his cats and dinner
of salted nuts and beer. When he suffers chest pains, he
fears heart disease. But in fact he is suffering a crisis of the
spirit. Gordon, an irreverent lapsed Catholic, begins to tutor
one of his least promising students, Cecelia, a tone-deaf exnun
who is convinced God has chosen her for a calling in
music. In a park he befriends Moopuna, a young boy of Pacific
Island and African descent. He later begins a relationship
with the child’s young unwed Polynesian mother. Gordon’s
hopes for a professional career and traditional family don’t
materialize, but gradually he finds fulfillment in other ways,
and with it a restoration of faith.
“There’s action, there’s music, there’s God, there’s a
young child and love and danger. This book has it all.”
—Merrill Joan Gerber, author of King Of The World (Pushcart
Press Editor’s Award), The Kingdom of Brooklyn (Ribalow Prize)
and The Victory Gardens of Brooklyn
Janet Nichols Lynch has had her short fiction published
in the New Yorker, Seventeen and literary magazines. Her juvenile
and young-adult novels and nonfiction books on composers
Fiasco
Coskun Buktel
Acolorful, fast-paced, and entertaining crime novel
set in the dynamic, chaotic city of Istanbul, Fiasco
is full of unexpected twists and turns and has a surprising
ending.
The story begins when Mesut, a lonely, depressed
man trying to commit suicide, answers a call from a
“wrong number” which turns out to be the Mafia.
Across town, a young man named Ozdemir and his
mistress Zehra, inspired by a series of terrorist attacks
on the British Consulate and other targets in Istanbul,
decide to organize their own “terrorist” bombing in
order to kill Ozdemir’s rich, jealous, older wife.
Meanwhile, Mesut falls in love with Ayten, a young
woman whose father is about to die from an extreme
form of nostalgia. But Ayten gets kidnapped by the
Mafia in retaliation for a death that Mesut indirectly
caused. To get the blood money to pay off the Mafia,
Mesut will have to carry out the suicide bombing for
Ozdemir and Zehra...
Coskun Buktel lives in Istanbul, Turkey, where he is
a well-known playwright and critic. He has published
two plays, two volumes of theater criticism, and a
drama anthology, in addition to translating D.H.
Lawrence’s novella The Fox into Turkish. His novel
Fiasco is his first work to be translated into English.
The Red Apple
Jonathan Levitan
Asweeping historical novel, The Red Apple takes
place during the two decades before the Ottoman
conquest of Constantinople in 1453. This is the story
of Manuel, a Greek boy who is taken from his village
by the Ottomans. He becomes Ibrahim, a Muslim, and
joins the Janissaries, the elite Ottoman military corps,
swearing his loyalty to the Sultan. While they fight for
Ottoman control of the Balkans, their sights are set on
capturing Constantinople. But the harshness of battle
and Ottoman political intrigues alienate Ibrahim, and
he leaves the Janissaries to marry the beautiful peasant
girl Mihrimah. When Ibrahim loses Mihrimah, there is
nothing left for him to do but rejoin the Greeks in their
doomed fight to save Constantinople from the
Ottomans.
From Janissary regiments and battle scenes to the
streets of fifteenth-century Constantinople, The Red
Apple brings this vibrant historical period to life.
Jonathan Levitan majored in history at the University
of Pennsylvania, from which he also earned his law
degree. He is a corporate healthcare attorney for a
skilled nursing management company and lives outside
Philadelphia, PA with his family.
The History of
Orphanages
Reconsidered
Richard B. McKenzie
rphanage” is the O-word in many people’s minds,
“Oconjuring up images of poor little Oliver Twist pleading
for more gruel. Many people are convinced that the history
of orphanages is a social-welfare record of total
devastation to the lives of the children who grew up in orphanages.
Indeed, the academic scholars who contributed
to The History of Orphanages Reconsidered often began their
research with the conventional view of orphanages. However,
the authors came to far more balanced assessments of
the historical records: while the orphanages studied were not
perfect, they were often good solutions to dire child welfare
conditions.
Editor Richard B. McKenzie contends that the future of
America’s most vulnerable citizens is on the line. The current
government run child welfare system is operating to the
detriment of tens of thousands of children. Foster care, intended
to act as a temporary solution, has become inadequate
permanent care. While adoption is a solution for some
children, many are difficult to place or are legally unavailable
for permanent placement. In re-examining the surprising
success of orphanages in the past, The History of Orphanages
Reconsidered reveals the great value of providing a truly stable
environment for youngsters, and explains how orphanages
might again be a powerful social tool.
Richard B. McKenzie grew up in Piedmont, North Carolina
at Barium Springs Home for Children, an experience
that led him to write The Home: A Memoir of Growing Up in
an Orphanage (1996) and to edit Rethinking Orphanages for
the 21st Century (1998). He is the Walter B. Gerken Professor
of Enterprise and Society in the Graduate School of Management
at the University of California, Irvine.
Hollywood’s Jewish
Stereotypes
Henry Kellerman
In Greedy, Cowardly, and Weak Henry
Kellerman details the many ways Hollywood
has created and perpetuated
Jewish stereotypes since the dawn of
filmmaking. Historically, Hollywood
has stereotyped various groups. Italians
are Mafioso, Irish are cops or
priests, blacks are dangerous, Hispanics
are crooks, and Asians are sly. What
about Jews The answer is that Jews
have been depicted as greedy, cowardly,
three quarters of a century
uncover all of it—Jewish stereotypes
hidden in plain sight.
Healthy Eating With
Chemotherapy
Jose van Mil and Christina MacKenzie-Archer
People undergoing chemotherapy as a treatment for
cancer often experience changes in appetite and
taste. Sugar may no longer taste sweet, the taste of salt
might be non-existent, spicy food may be intolerable,
and appreciation of subtle or strong flavors will vary
from mealtime to mealtime. What should be pleasant,
morale-boosting experiences, become a nightmare
not only for the patient but also for the person doing
the cooking.
This book addresses these issues by providing
healthy recipes that will excite the palate without overstimulating
it. Texture is extremely important and is
described in detail to enable the appropriate recipe to
be chosen for a particular moment. This is an easy,
flexible and appetizing guide, and a source of inspiration
for everyday dishes that the patient is likely to
enjoy—and be able to eat enough of to keep up their
strength.
José van Mil grew up in her father’s restaurant and
trained at the Cordon Bleu Cookery School in London.
She has written for Pink Ribbon, the magazine raising
breast cancer awareness, and cooked for her husband
during his chemotherapy treatment. She lives in Amstelveen,
The Netherlands. Christina MacKenzie-
Archer is a radiologist, and member of the Board of
Governors of London’s University College Hospital.
The Client’s Guide to
Mediation and
Arbitration
Peter Silverman
Mediation and arbitration can be a confusing and
time-consuming process—especially when a
client doesn’t understand the basics. The concise
guide is written for business executives involved in mediation
and arbitration, and will provide them with the
information they need to understand the role, if any,
that mediation and arbitration will play in their company’s
strategy for winning business disputes.
From evaluating your settlement goals, picking a
mediator, to the mediation itself, this expert guides
the reader through the options and strategies to a successful
arbitration. Additionally, Silverman reveals his
strategies for mediation, including picking a mediator,
crafting a mediation statement, and the mediation
process itself. Finally the book includes an appendix
containing sample arbitration and mediation clauses,
the American Arbitration Association Clauses and
J.A.M.S. Clauses.
This book will give business executives the tools
they need for their business to “win” through mediation
and arbitration.
Islam and AIDS
Between Scorn, Pity, and Justice
Edited by Farid Esack, Sarah Chiddy
Islam and AIDS is the first book to comprehensively
address the HIV/AIDS pandemic from an Islam perspective,
with contributions from a number of internationally
known activists and scholars of Islam. Religious
leaders, whether Muslim or Catholic, have been frequently
accused of denying the AIDS pandemic and
encouraging the stigmatization of its sufferers. While
often true, this view ignores the fact that religious
communities have also been at the forefront of addressing
the epidemic, which affects over thirty million
sufferers worldwide.
With an introduction by Peter Piot, Director of the
Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS, this
landmark work provides an insight into new possibilities
of critical and progressive Islamic approaches, in
both law and ethics, to one of the most urgent crises
facing humankind today.
Farid Esack is Visiting Professor of Islamic Studies,
Harvard University, and author of The Qur’an: A Beginner’s
Guide. He lives in South Africa. Sarah Chiddy has
master’s degree from Harvard Divinity School and
Follow Michael Burke through his arraignment, and
narrative of how his lies and deceit affected his family.
In the last two chapters of this important book you’ll
Lots of Scraps:
It’s Time to Quilt
Jeanne Stauffer
Quilting has never been more popular.
Early pioneers collected fabric
scraps to make bed quilts and today’s
quilters follow that same tradition.
This book gives quilters the opportunity
to use fabric scraps left over
from other projects, or to use newly
purchased fabrics, to make beautiful
quilts. Great projects to give as gifts or
to decorate their homes.
In this collection, you’ll find a wide
assortment of projects that are fun and
easy: super scrappy bed quilts, one-ofa-kind
wall quilts, extra-special baby
quilts, attractive table runners and
patchwork bags. Quilters of all ages
and skill levels will enjoy making these
quilts that are so uniquely their own.
Jeanne Stauffer of Berne, Indiana
has loved quilting since her childhood.
To her, it’s always time to quilt—unless
it’s time to buy more fabric.
Staying at Home,
Staying in the Law
A Guide to Remaining Active in the Legal
Profession While Pursuing Your Dreams
Julie Tower-Pierce
Many leave the legal profession on a temporary
basis, because of illness, to raise a child, or simply
pursue other interests. But does leaving the profession
mean saying goodbye to your career Julie Tower-
Pierce challenges the traditional view of the legal profession
as “either you’re in or you’re out,” and explains
how to “stay-at-home” while keeping your foot in the
door of legal practice.
Through tips, resources, and experiences shared by
dozens of attorneys, this book offers advice on everything
from devising your transition plan and redefining
your success, to staying active, and making money
from home. Alternative full-time and part-time careers
are discussed, including freelance writing, pro-bono
opportunities, telework, and compressed workweeks.
Julie Tower-Pierce, Esq., is an associate at Tarrant,
Marks & Gillies in Montpelier, an Adjunct Professor at
Norwich University, where she teaches cybercrime and
cyberlaw, and the mother of a toddler. Julie Tower-
Development Basics
Karen Lawson
Because the need for leaders has never been greater,
organizations are identifying high potential employees
and grooming them for their next roles as
leaders. Unfortunately, more often than not the approach
is not succinct and the candidate finds training
through “trial and error” and “baptism by fire.”
Leadership Development Basics offers readers the
tools and techniques they need to design and implement
a leadership development program in any size
organization. Part of the popular Training Basics Series,
Leadership Development Basics offers practical examples,
worksheets, checklists, and other tools along with
a set of icons that make it easy to apply the tips and
Exotics in Deer Country and Beyond
Mia Amato
Have you heard of “extreme gardening” Mia
Amato offers tips, tricks and plant selections from
ten years of garden writing coast to coast. Adventurous
gardeners who routinely ignore USDA plant hardiness
fruits and the world’s largest herbaceous
perennial—which grows 30 feet in a single year—are
just a few plants you can grow and have been grown
by Mia. If the idea of growing redwoods on a raft in
the Pacific Ocean (“technically possible if not practical”)
appeals to your sense of gardening fun, you’ll
enjoy this horticultural boost. Bonus: includes a list of
“deer-proof” plants for exotic gardens.
Jailing the
Johnston Gang
Bruce E. Mowday
Pennsylvania’s Johnston Gang, led by
Bruce Sr. and his brothers Norman
and David, ran a prolific burglary ring
during the 1960s and ‘70s. But in
1978, fearing that younger members
of the gang were going to rat them
out, the brothers killed four teenagers
and nearly killed Bruce Sr.’s own son.
This book draws on personal interviews
with investigators, attorneys, and even
former gang members to detail how
the combined efforts of federal, state,
and local law enforcement brought the
brothers to justice.
Holy Stars!
Favorite Deities, Prophets, Saints &
Sages from Around the World
Kathleen Edwards
People everywhere revere familiar images and stories
of religious figures to remind themselves of the spiritual
dimensions of life. But many of us today are mystified
by the spiritual icons we see.
To be educated world citizens, it’s important to
have basic religious literacy. Unlike comparative religion
books that explain beliefs and traditions, Holy
Stars! focuses on the most popular spiritual personalities
worldwide—27 in all. It reveals the essential story
of the religious figure seen on a taxi’s dashboard, mentioned
in a news report, or glimpsed in a portrait on a
neighbor’s living room wall.
Lovely line drawings and handwritten text make
this a gift book for all seasons, both for those versed in
only one religion and for the growing number of
Americans with no religious affiliation. In the contemporary
context of religious discord, this ecumenical
book could not be timelier in its inclusiveness and
acceptance.
Kathleen Edwards is an illustrator whose clients include
HarperCollins, Chronicle Books, Conari Press,
and Tarcher Putnam. She has won numerous awards
for her illustrations and fine art, and has exhibited nationally
in many venues. She lives in the San Francisco
The Zohar
Annotations to the Ashlag Commentary
Rav Michael Laitman, PhD
The Book of Zohar (The Book of Radiance) is an ageless
source of wisdom and the basis for all Kabbalistic
literature. Since its appearance nearly 2,000 years
ago, it has been the primary, and often only, source
used by Kabbalists.
For centuries, Kabbalah was hidden from the public,
which was considered not yet ready to receive it.
However, our generation has been designated by Kabbalists
as the first generation that is ready to grasp the
concepts in The Zohar. Now, we can put these principles
into practice in our lives.
Written in a unique and metaphorical language,
The Zohar: Annotations to the Ashlag Commentary enriches
our understanding of reality and expands our
worldview. However, this text should not be read in an
ordinary fashion. We should patiently and repeatedly
read and think about each sentence as we try to penetrate
the author’s feelings. We should read it slowly
and try to extract the nuances of the text.
Rav Michael Laitman, PhD is founder and president
of the Bnei Baruch-Kabbalah, Education, and Research
Institute, established to promote the spirituality
of humankind through the study of Kabbalah. Laitman
has a PhD in Philosophy, an MS in Medical Cybernetics
and is a professor in Ontology and the Theory of
Knowledge.
Buddhist Fasting
Practice
The Nyungne Method of Thousand-
Armed Chenrezig
Wangchen Rinpoche
The Tibetan Buddhist practice of Nyungne
(“nyoong-nay”) has been gaining increased attention
in Buddhist centers across North America; participants
say the practice purifies them both physically
and spiritually. This volume is one of the few comprehensive
treatments in English of these powerful teachings.
Nyungne is a profound two-and-a-half-day practice,
a length of time especially helpful for people
whose schedules cannot accommodate long-term retreat.
It involves the keeping of strict vows; the second
day is devoted to complete silence and fasting. The
meditation centers on the recitations, mantras, and
guided visualizations of the Thousand-Armed Chenrezig,
the embodiment of all the buddhas’ loving-kindness
and compassion. Translated as “abiding in the
fast,” Nyungne is said to be effective in the healing of
illness, the nurturing of compassion, and the purification
of negative karma.
Wangchen Rinpoche is a student of Dorje Chang
Kalu Rinpoche, with whom he lived and traveled from
an early age. He is a master practitioner of Nyungne.
He lives in Los Angeles, California.
Indoctrination U.
The Left’s War Against
Academic Freedom
David Horowitz
In dramatic commentary, Indoctrination U. unveils the
intellectual corruption of American universities by
faculty activists who have turned America’s classrooms
into indoctrination centers for their political causes. It
describes how academic radicals with little regard for
professional standards or the pluralistic foundations of
American society have created an ideological curriculum
that it is as odds with the traditional purposes of a
democratic education.
Indoctrination U. is also a riveting account of the reaction
to Horowitz’s “Academic Bill of Rights” campaign
by professor unions and academic associations,
whose leaderships have been taken over by the political
left. The story of the campaign against academic
freedom, told in colorful detail in Indoctrination U., can
also be read as a case study in the political methods of
the radical left.
David Horowitz is a nationally known author and
lifelong civil rights activist. He is author of numerous
books, including The End of Time, Unholy Alliance and
Radical Son. He lives in Sherman Oaks, CA.
Law, Evidence and
A Comprehensive Reference Manual
for Lawyers, Judges and Disability
Professionals
John Parry
Disability Discrimination Law, Evidence and Testimony
explains and analyzes key aspects of disability discrimination
law from several different perspectives to
state and local government, public accommodations,
telecommunications, housing and zoning, education,
and criminal and civil institutions. Also included are
detailed charts of relevant state statutory provisions
and a history of disability discrimination law. The book
disability discrimination cases.
The Playful Brain
Sergio M. Pellis and Vivien C Pellis
Despite over a hundred years of research and theorizing,
questions concerning play behavior, such
as what behavior qualifies as play, what brain mechanisms
are needed to produce play, and of what benefit,
if any, does play have to our lives remain
unanswered. Over time, biologists, psychologists, anthropologists,
and educators have generated more
opinions than solid evidence. Indeed, in the history of
the Western world, play has vacillated between being
seen as instrumental to the development of healthy individuals
and as a childish waste of time.
With reference to a range of species, but using the
feisty rat as their model, the authors synthesize three
decades of empirical research to create the first truly
integrated study that appreciates the significance of
such previously neglected phenomena as the multifunctionality
of play, the different forms of play that
exist between species, and the evolutionary aspects
that are responsible for it all.
Professor Sergio M. Pellis and Associate Professor
Vivien C. Pellis both work at the Canadian Centre for
Enchantress of Nations
Pauline Viardot: Soprano, Muse
and Lover
Michael Steen
Enchantress of Nations is the lavish biography of
Pauline Viardot whose life spanned most of the
nineteenth century; and it also weaves a rich tapestry
of music and literature in France, England and Russia.
We meet George Sand, Dickens, Flaubert, Tolstoy and
Dostoyevsky; Rossini, Berlioz, Chopin, and Charles
Gounod, with whom Viardot had a stormy friendship;
and especially the great Russian novelist Ivan Turgenev,
with whom she had a passionate 40-year affair.
Michael Steen recounts the back-stage bitchiness,
robbery, duels and violence, life in Russia before the
emancipation of the serfs, appalling disease and
shocking poverty, and the unhappiness experienced
by children of successful parents. Luxuriously produced
with a color plate section, it opens a new vista
on opera, nineteenth-century literature and history.
Michael Steen OBE was born in Dublin. He was an
organ scholar at Oxford, after the Royal College of
Music and Eton. Since retirement from the City he has
Cato Handbook
on Policy
7th Edition
Edited by Edward H. Crane and David Boaz
Now in its seventh edition, the Cato Handbook on
Policy gathers the policy recommendations from
Cato scholars and experts on every major policy issue.
This year’s Handbook has a broad scope and appeals to
policymakers on federal, state, and local levels. The
Washington Post has called the Handbook “a soup-tonuts
agenda to reduce spending, kill programs, terminate
whole agencies, and dramatically restrict the
power of the federal government.”
Edward H. Crane is the president of the Cato Institute.
David Boaz is the executive vice president. Both
live in the Washington, D.C. area.
Tomes of The Dead Series
Rebecca Levene
The year 40AD is drawing to a close, the last gasp of
Caligula’s demented reign. Rome dominates the
world, but something is festering at the heart of the
Empire. Slaves are disappearing, the bodies of the
dead are being stolen and mysterious shipments arrive
from Egypt in the dead of night. Behind it all are the
powerful Cult of Isis, searching for a way to breach the
barrier between life and death. And the only people
who can stop them are a barbarian gladiator, an overeducated
slave, a horny teenager—and an enigmatic
stranger who may or may not be the god Set. In order
to save Rome, they must defeat the crazed Caligula,
battle the undead hordes, and travel to the underworld
itself to seal the gates of hell.
Rebecca Levene has been a writer and editor for
fifteen years. She’s written a children’s book about
Captain Cook, several science-fiction and horror novels
and a Beginner’s Guide to Poker. She was associate
producer on the UK TV drama “Wild at Heart,” story
consultant on the Chinese soap opera “Joy Luck
Street,” script writer on “Family Affairs” and “Is Harry
on the Boat” and part of the writing team for Channel
5’s Swinging. She lives in London, UK.
