2012 JUDGES BIO INFORMATION
Music GE: Dr. Joe Manfredo
Joseph Manfredo is coordinator of undergraduate music education and also the coordinator of student
teaching for the School of Music. Originally from Calumet City, IL, Manfredo received a BME and a MA in
Conducting from Eastern Illinois University. His Doctorate in Music Education is from the University of
Illinois. Dr. Manfredo is in constant demand as a guest conductor, clinician, consultant and adjudicator.
He has conducted various All-State bands and honor bands throughout the mid-west. In addition, he has
presented lectures and clinics at the Mid-West International Band and Orchestra Clinic, national conferences
of Music Educators National Conference & College Band Directors National Conference. He has
made numerous presentations at state music conference, and internationally in Shaghai China, Mainz
Germany, Echternach Luxembour, Graz Austria and cities throughout Brazil. He has been published by
Music Educators Journal, Journal for Music Teacher Education, Journal for Band Research, The Instrumentalist
and the Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education.
Music Ens: Dr. David Snyder
David W. Snyder is currently Professor of Music Education at Illinois State University. He taught
band in the Texas public school system for seven years where his bands were twice selected for the finals
of the Texas State Marching Contest. Dr. Snyder then went on to complete his Master of Music in horn
performance at Southern Methodist University and a Doctor of Music Education from the College-
Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati. He has been actively teaching and working with
bands in public school music since 1983. Professor Snyder is a frequent guest adjudicator and clinician
throughout Illinois.
Visual GE: Marie Czapinski
Marie Czapinski was part of Bands of America before it even existed – she was there when the
original incarnation “Marching Bands of America” was just a dream of its founder, she was part of the
planning stages and then saw it become a reality. She continues to be instrumental in the organization
today.
Marie is an icon in the marching, color guard and visual design worlds of pageantry. It was she who 30
years ago held a BOA-sponsored clinic for 2,000 teachers at Texas Bandsmasters Convention to introduce
the use of color guard to marching bands, as at the time drill teams were the only form of pageantry
in Texas.
She has been a color guard and visual adjudicator, clinician and leader for Bands of America/Music for All
throughout its history. She is a co-founder of Winter Guard International and has been on the board of
directors for the Midwest Color Guard Circuit for over 20 years. She is also an adjudicator for WGI and
DCI and has appeared in the DCI World Championships Broadcast on ESPN2.
Marie has also impacted the marching arts as a teacher, having instructed bands including Conant High
School, IL, three-time Grand National Champion Rocky Mount High School, NC and Union High School,
OK. “BOA has always used all of its resources to reach out to decision makers to support music education
and continues to be the innovating force,” says Marie.

Visual Ens: Gary Czapinski
It has been close to three decades since Gary "Chops" Czapinski, in collaboration with Pete
Emmons, thrilled the drum corps activity with their innovative and creative visual magic with
the Santa Clara Vanguard. To this day, Gary's visionary approach to visual design can be seen
in every niche of the world of pageantry. From the costume-clad characters of "Alice In Wonderland"
performed by the Madison Scouts and the "parachute" of the Seneca Optimist to the
introduction of asymmetric drill design, Gary has been instrumental in the ongoing evolution of
the visual art of the drum and bugle corps activity.
Without Gary's nurturing and constant desire to be new, fresh and different, our activity would
be very different today. Possibly a little less imaginative, colorful and forward thinking. He is
truly one of the master visual "producer/designers" of our time.
To this day, Gary continues to design within the drum corps, band and winter guard arenas and
lectures on the subject of design at universities and colleges nationwide. He continues to volunteer
countless hours to the training of new judges and supports the drum corps activity which
remains the root of his life as an artist.
Color Guard: Billy Saccomanno
Billy Saccomanno relocated to Kansas City, Missouri in 2010, and is the Chief Judge for the
Mid Continent Color Guard Association. He serves as a Movement Adjudicator for Winter Guard
international, the Atlantic Indoor Association and Florida Federation of Judges Association. Additionally,
he has been serving as a guest judge and clinician for local marching band and winter
guard circuits in 18 different states across the United States.
Billy's passion for the marching arts has been evidenced by many years of teaching marching
band and winter guard including Black Watch, Apex and Bpex, Innuendo, and Extraordinaire
Winter Guards as well as several high schools in the New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland and
North Carolina areas. His drum corps teaching resume includes the Phantom Regiment, Crossmen,
Jersey Surf, Teal Sound, Reading Buccaneers, and Hawthorne Caballeros.
Percussion: Chad Schaedler
Chad Schaedler has been with Gateway Indoor since the 2005 WGI season. During his tenure
with Gateway he has served as the Battery Caption Head, Battery Arranger, Program Coordinator
and most recently the Education Director and Staff Coordinator. Chad has instructed a
number of percussion ensembles including The Crossmen (2010 Percussion Co-Caption Head),
The Bluecoats (2006-2009), The Colts (2005), Missouri State University (2003-2004, 2008-
2010), and various high school programs across the country. Chad is an Innovative Percussion
and Evans drumhead artist. He is the current percussion coordinator for MCCGA and is a member
of the WGI Percussion Advisory Board.
Chad graduated from Missouri State University in 2000 with a B.S. in General Business. He currently
resides in O’Fallon, Missouri with his wife Kim and their three children, Cameron, Dalen,
and Ella.
