HELP US TO “STOCK THE PANTRY” FOR SPRING THROUGHOUT MARCH 2010 Catholic Charities requests for help doubles in one year We may have gotten a late start because of the weather, but Catholic Charities is once again asking residents of Delaware and the Lower Eastern Shore of Maryland to “Stock The Pantry” during the month of March. Food can be dropped off at most Catholic Charities sites, and at select parishes. Please call your parish for appropriate drop-off times. Check Catholic Charities website, www.cdow.org/charities.html for up-to-date information on drop-off sites and hours. “Need continues to soar for food,” said Richelle Vible, Catholic Charities’ Executive Director. “Our pantries and food cooperative have seen requests for help double in the past year.” Catholic Charities operates three food cooperatives, in New Castle and Sussex Counties in Delaware, and in Somerset County Maryland. The three sites distribute over 20,000 pounds of food each month. Sussex and Somerset Counties also operate emergency food pantries. Last fiscal year, the pantries distributed over 100,000 pounds of food to those who couldn’t afford to purchase food. “Stock the Pantry” efforts have brought in over 20,000 pounds of food since June 2008. Catholic Charities will also accept monetary donations and grocery store gift cards in order to purchase additional food to fill bags for the food distribution programs. To make an online monetary donation, visit Catholic Charities’ secure donation site, www.cdow.org/ccdonation.html. Choose Food Distribution Programs as the ministry to which you want to designate your contribution. Suggested items for donation include nonperishable and shelf stable items. Catholic Charities needs the following items: baby food and cereal, baby diapers and wipes canned goods like spaghetti, beans, soups, vegetables and fruit canned meats like chicken, tuna, salmon, beef stew, corned beef hash, chili boxes of pasta or macaroni and cheese crackers, cereal, oatmeal, and pancake mix jars of peanut butter and jelly juice, coffee, tea, hot cocoa mix, instant breakfasts shelf-stable milk - either dry or evaporated condiments like spreads, ketchup, mustard, relish, barbecue sauce, pickles and syrup personal hygiene items, like soap, shampoo, and toothpaste home cleaning supplies like laundry and dish detergent Wonders Catholic Charities takes donations at its locations Monday through Friday between 9 am to 4 pm. CATHOLIC CHARITIES PARTNERS WITH GOODWILL TO PROVIDE SERVICES TO SUSSEX COUNTY RESIDENTS New location set for food coop distribution A new partnership between Catholic Charities Inc. and Goodwill of Delaware will enable an expansion of each organization’s services to residents of western Sussex County. As part of the arrangement between the two organizations, the Goodwill retail store in Bridgeville, Delaware, at 18178 Sussex Highway, will be the site of a monthly food distribution to in-need Sussex County residents. On the last Thursday of each month at 11 a.m., Catholic Charities’ Hope Food Cooperative will distribute a supplemental bag of groceries to help families and individuals with limited incomes. The first food distribution in Bridgeville was held in January. “We are delighted to be able to collaborate with Goodwill and serve our most vulnerable neighbors in western Sussex County,” said Richelle A. Vible, Catholic Charities Executive Director. “The Hope Food Cooperative provides a great source of nutritious food for households in need. Those who need assistance in this challenging economy will certainly benefit from both the food cooperative and the wonderful resources that Goodwill can offer. We look forward to a long, productive partnership.” Similarly, Goodwill officials welcome the opportunity to reach additional residents of Sussex County who may not be familiar with the services and career training opportunities provided. Works “We are pleased to be working with Catholic Charities to provide a location for the food distribution program,” said Jenn Clark, director of Family Strengthening for Goodwill of Delaware. “When participants come to pick up their food, we hope they will take a moment to learn more how Goodwill of Delaware helps serve those in the community.” In addition to the one based in Sussex County at Casa San Francisco, Catholic Charities operates food cooperatives in Somerset County, Maryland, based at Seton Center, and in New Castle County, Delaware, based at Bayard House. With the help of the Food Bank of Delaware, Catholic Charities food cooperatives provide participants with nutritious, mealready products for a fraction of the retail value. The cooperatives also provide information on nutrition, shopping on a budget and meal planning. Participants in the cooperative must be income qualified. For information on how to enroll at any cooperative, call the location closest to you. For 88 years, Goodwill of Delaware and Delaware County’s mission has been to improve the quality of life for individuals with barriers to employment through vocational services and work opportunities and has been supported by proceeds from retail sales and donations.
