■Message from the President 

Dear colleagues and friends, 

Welcome to IACMR’s Third Biannual Conference in Guangzhou! 

This conference is a result of two years’ hard work of numerous member 

volunteers who contributed their time, effort, talent, and wisdom. This conference 

is a platform for scholars all over the world to gather under one roof 

and share their cutting edge knowledge and insights regarding Chinese enterprise 

management and development. This conference is also providing a

precious opportunity for us to connect and reconnect in person, to encourage each other, and to plant seeds 

for future research collaboration. I wish for everyone to have a great time in the conference! 

This conference marks another important milestone in the history of IACMR. Currently we have over 4,600 

members from more than 25 countries and regions. We have successfully obtained affiliation status with the 

Academy of Management. Our beloved journal Management and Organization Review has been listed in 

SSCI only three years after its first launch. Our Founding President Anne Tsui has been elected Program Chair 

in the Academy of Management and will be its 66 th President in 2011-2012. More and more of our members’ 

work appears in top-tier management journals such as Administrative Science Quarterly, Academy of Management 

Review, Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Applied Psychology (JAP), Journal of International 

Business Studies, Strategic Management Journal, and Organizational Behavior and Human Decision 

Processes (OBHDP). More and more members publish books (both in English and Chinese) to disseminate 

knowledge. Most noticeable is our members’appointed editorship in top-tier academic journals. For 

example, Jing Zhou is an appointed associate editor of JAP, Sam Aryee is an appointed consulting editor of 

JAP, and Xiao-Ping Chen is an appointed associate editor of OBHDP. These continuous progresses make us 

believe that IACMR is a viable organization that has great potential to make a contribution to the knowledge 

development of the international management community. 

As I step down from the president post, I try to envision what IACMR will become in the years to come. 

Working with the executive officers and the numerous volunteers for our association in the past six years, I 

have constantly felt a great sense of community and an ever strong identity with IACMR. It is an important 

part of my life. The devotion and dedication of our officers and members are beyond what words could 

describe. With such strong leadership and membership, I expect IACMR to grow bigger, stronger, and more 

influential day by day. And my dream is that someday IACMR will become an organization that enjoys the 

reputation of a hub for great Chinese management research and the reputation of inspiration, excellence, and 

integrity. 

So, it is with great pride and excitement that I welcome you to this conference. Let the celebration begin!

■Message from the Program Chairs 

On behalf of the Program Committees, it is with great 

pride and enthusiasm that we welcome you to the 

Third Biennial Conference of the International Association 

for Chinese Management Research! 

While the fantastic momentum of our 2004 Inaugural 

Conference and the very successful 2006 Second Biennial 

Conference are still vividly in our memory, we 

are very proud that our 2008 Third Biennial Conference 

has reached another important milestone of our 

association. For this conference, we saw an increase 

of 45% in total submissions compared to the 2006 

conference. With the large number of submissions 

and the tremendous support provided by hundreds 

of reviewers, we have put together an outstanding 

conference program, including an English Program 

and a China Forum with 49 paper presentation 

sessions, 8 poster sessions, and 4 symposia. 

For the English Program, the Micro Stream received 

112 submissions from 21 countries and 111 universities 

around the world. The Macro Stream received 88 

submissions from 19 counties and 96 universities. 

The China Forum received 166 papers from 65 universities 

in mainland China and 22 universities from Hong 

Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, USA, and Canada. Taken 

together, this is a clear indication that interests in 

Chinese management research are strong globally and 

that IACMR is the center point where scholars all 

over the world choose to share their common 

interests. 

The theme of the conference is “The Olympic Spirit 

in Chinese Management Research”, which has been 

illuminated beautifully during the preparation process 

of the conference. Scholars from all over the world 

volunteered to serve for the conference. The review

committees contain 158 reviewers for the English Program 

and 107 scholars for the China Forum. To foster 

excellence in the quality of the conference, each of 

the 366 submissions passed a rigorous double-blind 

review process. Acceptance decisions were made on 

the basis of multiple reviewers’ inputs. When the reviewers 

offered split opinions and recommendations 

on a paper, we sent the paper to one or two program 

committee members to conduct further independent 

review of the paper. A final acceptance decision was 

made on the basis of this entire set of multiplereviewer, 

two-step review process. As a result of the 

review processes, the English Program accepted 84 

papers for oral presentation and 49 papers for poster 

presentation, and the China Forum accepted 59 papers 

for presentation and 57 papers for poster 

presentations. We also received five symposium 

proposals, of which four were accepted on the basis 

of the reviewers’ recommendations. 

In addition to the main program, we offer 7 keynote 

sessions and one executive forum, in which a number 

of well established scholars and CEOs will share their 

experience and insights with us. Moreover, we have 

an exciting day of professional development 

workshops. Carrying on the good tradition developed 

from the previous IACMR conferences, we offer workshops 

on the topics of conducting dissertation 

research, survey research methodology, and writing 

for top-tier journals. Furthermore, we provide such 

new workshops as grounded theory methodology, 

China strategy research, business case writing, teaching 

methodology, reviewing for top-tier journals and 

a faculty development consortium, as well as caucuses 

to discuss research ideas. 

The preparation of the conference started in the summer 

of 2006. During the past two years, countless 

people voluntarily contributed their invaluable time, 

effort, and expertise with no compensation of any 

kind. On behalf of the Program Chairs, we would like 

to extend our sincere gratitude to the 15 Conference 

Advisory Committee members, 52 Conference Program 

Committee members (31 members for English 

Program and 21 for China Forum), 12 Local Arrangements 

Committee members, 265 plus reviewers, the 

keynote speakers, session chairs, discussants, poster 

session coordinators, assistants, and many, many 

other colleagues who have assisted the conference 

in various capacities. You have been so devoted, 

responsible, and creative, and so generous in serving 

the community of scholars. Your professionalism 

and dedication have truly demonstrated the great 

Olympic Spirit. Thank you! 

We would also like to thank all of the authors and 

participants of the conference. Thank you for conducting 

high-quality research and for your commitment 

to IACMR and enthusiasm in sharing your work 

with other colleagues. Your contributions have helped 

us build IACMR into a flagship platform for creating,

1. General Information 

a. Program Schedule 

There are two listings provided in this Program: one covering 

sessions where papers will be presented in English 

and the other covering sessions where papers will be presented 

in Chinese. Each listing is arranged chronologically 

by date and time of the session with room location for 

each session. 

Note: Admittance to all sessions will be limited to only 

registered conference participants. Please be sure to wear 

your conference badge always. 

b. Conference Facilities 

All program sessions and other conference functions will 

be held in The Garden Hotel, Guangzhou. A map indicating 

the location of the hotel and an alphabetical listing of 

meeting rooms within this hotel are contained in the next 

section for your convenience. 

c. Conference Registration and Information Center 

Please note that pre-registration is required for the 2008 

conference and beyond, that is, there will be NO on-site 

registration. Everyone must pre-register by closing date on 

June 1, 2008. Identification (name) badges are required for 

admission to all sessions and activities. Pre-registrants may 

pick up their registration packets at the Conference Registration 

and Information Center, Lobby, The Garden Hotel.

Spouses who are not IACMR Members are allowed access 

to the Conference and provided a complimentary name

registration fee of USD200 for the entire conference packet, 

proceedings and all conference meals (3 lunches and 2 

dinners). For PRC citizens, the special spouse registration 

fee is 1500RMB.

Winner of the Distinguished Contribution Award 

Professor Andrew G. Walder is a Professor of Sociology and 

the Denise O’Leary and Kent Thiry Professor at the School of Humanities 

and Sciences, Stanford University. His career accomplishments 

also include a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Michigan 

as well as years as a professor of sociology at Harvard and 

then as a professor and Social Sciences division head at the Hong 

Kong University of Science and Technology. 

Professor Walder’s entire academic career has been devoted to the 

study of post-1949 China, especially the transition from a centrally 

planned economy to a market economy in China and the implications 

of the transition for careers, mobility, organization and property 

rights issues. He has published eight books, all of which are on the topic of China. In addition, he has 42 

refereed journal articles, 41 of which are on China, as well as 30 book chapters, all of which are about China. 

His work is widely cited. In fact, he is one of the most frequently cited scholars on China (Li and Tsui, 2002). 

Nearly every scholar who is studying China, whether in sociology, psychology, economics or management, is 

familiar with Professor Walder’s name and prolific body of work. 

He has won numerous awards for his scholarly contributions, including the Distinguished Scholarly Publication 

Award from the American Sociological Association, the Joseph Levenson Book Prize from the Association 

for Asian Studies, and the European Group on Organization Studies Book Award. He holds several 

honorary visiting professorships from the most distinguished universities in China, including Peking University, 

Tsinghua University, Renmin University and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He was 

the Chair of the Social Sciences and Business Studies Panel of the Research Grants Council of Hong Kong. He 

has won numerous grants from prestigious funding agencies like the Luce Foundation, Ford Foundation, the 

National Science Foundation, the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation, as well as the Hong Kong Research Grants 

Council. All of these honors and awards are testimony to Professor Walder’s reputation among the scholarly 

community in China and to the great respect for his scholarship.

Winner of the Distinguished Executive Award 

Mr. Li Ning is the Founder, Chairman, and an Executive 

Director of Li Ning Company Limited. Mr. Li earned 

his bachelor's degree in law from the School of Law at 

Peking University, an executive M.B.A. degree from 

Guanghua School of Management at Peking University 

and a technical honorary doctorate from Loughborough 

University in the United Kingdom. 

Mr. Li is a globally renowned gymnast and entrepreneur. 

He first captivated the world at the 1984 Olympics in Los 

Angeles when he won three gold medals, two silvers and 

a bronze. His talent and victories helped him emerge as the face of a positive, new Chinese athletic image. Mr. Li 

earned 106 medals over the course of his 19-year athletic career. 

Following his 1989 retirement, Mr. Li founded Li Ning Company, the PRC’s first national sporting goods brand. Li 

Ning is the leading sporting goods industry in China. With “Anything is possible” as its slogan, its core brand Li 

Ning and its expanding strategy, the company is a paradigm of Chinese professional sporting goods, and the 

company’s goal is to become one of the world’s leading sports brands. 

Under Mr. Li’s leadership, the company exhibits great social responsibility in line with its core values of Athleticism, 

Integrity, Professionalism, Passion, Breakthroughs, and Trust. Every year, Li Ning donates money to the western 

area of China to support local education, such as the founding of Li Ning Hope Primary School and training of 

countryside school teachers. Mr. Li set up the China Athletic Foundation (Hong Kong), contributing more than 

HK$100 Million as a seed grant to the Foundation, which is dedicated to the retraining of retired athletes and the 

training of athletic teachers in the poorer regions of China. Another of Li Ning’s projects is the annual “Lifeline 

Express”, for which Mr. Li organizes a caravan of cars to the poorest districts to provide medical treatment for 

thousands of people in country villages. Li Ning has promoted the 8848 plan to help newly graduated college 

students to adapt into society and also advocates the protection of health, social rights and career development of 

women employees. Li Ning provides its employees with an exemplary work environment, featuring programs like 

tailored employee education plans to encourage employees involvement in society-benefiting programs. 

Along with his company, Mr. Li continues to advocate and promote Chinese sports development and the Olympics. 

Li Ning was the first domestic sporting goods company to sponsor the Chinese Sports Delegation for both the Asia 

Games and the Olympic Games. Since 1992, Li Ning has provided award ceremony clothing for the Chinese Olympic 

delegation for four consecutive Olympic Games. 

Mr. Li and Li Ning Company have earned many awards for their contributions to Chinese industry and society. Li 

Ning’s generosity and support of education, rights, well-being, and the finer points of athletic competition make 

the company an exemplar for other leaders in the industry.

10. IACMR Commitment to Excellence Statement 

In pursuit of its organizational objectives, the International Association for Chinese Management Research (IACMR) is 

committed to excellence. This commitment to excellence extends from the work of the organization and its members to 

the approach of the organization to its constituencies. 

IACMR defines excellence as the highest or finest quality of both the effort and the goal. It includes the following 

responsibilities: 

1. Creation and dissemination of knowledge about management in Chinese contexts that is academically rigorous, a true 

reflection of the practical world and useful in the development of excellence in business practice. 

2. Development and promotion of research that is prudent in design, human subject use, confidentiality, result reporting 

and in the proper attribution to source. 

3. Facilitation of fair, transparent and culturally appropriate exchanges among researchers and practitioners. 

4. Recognition of the dignity and personal worth of the members, the students of management, the practitioners of 

management and the global community with whom and from whom we learn. 

5. Sensitivity to the emerging ethical dimensions which are found in the diversity of cultures and perspectives that we 

seek to represent through our research and writing. 

6. Maintenance of objectivity and fairness in our presentation of the research results and in our treatment of our 

colleagues. 

7. Adherence to the highest professional standards. 

8. Continuous renewal of the organization and its members through the induction of new members and the encouragement 

of the fullest participation of all members. 

Research Code of Ethics 

IACMR members have a responsibility to represent their credentials, capabilities, and research reports in an accurate 

and objective manner. IACMR members must also uphold the highest standards of integrity, caring, and respect for those 

involved in the research studies and in their interactions within the larger professional community. 

Research Integrity. It is the duty of IACMR members conducting research to design, implement, analyze, report 

and present their findings rigorously. Research rigor includes the careful design, execution, analysis, and interpretation 

of results and the retention of data. Presentation of research should include a treatment of data that is honest 

and that reveals both the strengths and weaknesses of the findings. When important alternative hypotheses or 

explanations exist, they should be noted, and the data that disconfirm hypotheses should be acknowledged. Authorship 

and credit should be shared in correct proportion to the various parties’ contributions. Whether published or 

not, ideas or concepts derived from others should be acknowledged, as should advice and assistance received. To 

not do so constitutes plagiarism.

Journal Submission Policies. IACMR members should closely observe the policies of journals that prohibit or 

restrict the concurrent review of potential articles of by multiple outlets. More than one report of essentially the same 

data and results should not be published unless the reports are explicitly directed to different audiences through different 

types of outlets. Under such circumstances, the member should initiate an explicit discussion with the relevant journal 

editors concerning the intended multiple submissions. When several separate but related reports result from a single 

study, the existence of the different reports should be made known to the relevant journal editors and the reports should 

reference each other. 

Respect for Research Participants. IACMR members accept responsibility to preserve and protect the privacy, 

dignity, well-being and freedom of research participants and human subjects. This responsibility requires careful research 

design and informed consent of the participants. Risks and the possibility of harm to research participants must 

be carefully considered and, to the extent possible, minimized. Both participating organizations and participating individuals 

must be informed when there is a degree of risk or harm inherent in the research. Informed consent means 

explaining the purposes and nature of the research to all participants so that they can freely choose whether or not to 

become involved. Such explanations should include a warning of possible harm and should provide explicit opportunities 

to refuse to participate or to terminate participation at any time. Students and employees are particularly subject to 

possible coercion, even when not intended; thus, special care must be taken in obtaining their informed consent. Third 

party review is one way of protecting the interests of research participants and human subjects. Research plans 

involving human subjects should be reviewed by the appropriate third party, such as the university human subjects 

committee or a focus group of potential participants. Questions regarding confidentiality or anonymity must be resolved 

between the researcher and participant. If confidentiality or anonymity is requested, it must be honored. Deception 

should be held to a minimum. The degree and effects of deception must be mitigated as much as possible. Researchers 

should carefully weigh the gains achieved against the costs in human dignity. The researcher must provide a full and 

accurate explanation of any necessary deception or concealment to all participants at the conclusion of the study. If 

appropriate, counseling should be available to participants. 

Reviewer and Editor Responsibilities. It is the duty of IACMR reviewers and journal editors to exercise their position 

of privilege in a confidential, unbiased, prompt, constructive and sensitive manner. They have the duty to judge manuscripts 

only on their scholarly merits. Conflicts of interest, which arise when a review is in basic disagreement with the 

research approach or line of research represented by a manuscript, should be referred to the journal editor to decide 

whether to accept or to decline to review the manuscript. Protecting intellectual property is a responsibility of both the 

reviewer and the editor. The content of the manuscript is the property of its author(s). It is inappropriate for a reviewer 

or editor to use ideas from a manuscript or show a manuscript to a third party without the explicit permission of the 

authors. Advice on specific, limited aspects of a manuscript may be sought from a qualified colleague as long as the 

author’s intellectual property remains secure. Sharing review responsibilities is inappropriate. The review is the sole 

responsibility of the person assigned by the journal editor. Students and/or colleagues should not be asked to prepare 

reviews unless the journal editor has given explicit approval. Anyone contributing to a review should receive formal 

recognition. A constructive review means providing critiques and comments in the spirit of collegiality with thoroughness, 

timeliness, compassion and respect and in all ways intended to improve the quality of the manuscript.

Professional Interaction and Exchange. IACMR members have a responsibility to foster meaningful exchanges. 

Members should foster a climate of free exchange and constructive criticism within the organization and should be willing 

to share research findings and insights fully with other members. As a voluntary organization, IACMR is dependent on 

the cooperation, involvement and leadership of its members. Members should abide by the constitution, bylaws, policies 

and codes. Officers and members should fulfill obligations and responsibilities without regard to friendships or personal 

gains. Members should contribute to the renewal of the IACMR by encouraging participation of all eligible individuals, 

by assisting new or prospective members to develop their skills, knowledge and understanding of their professional 

obligations. All members, whether affiliated with a university, a business, a government, a service or other organizations, 

have an obligation to interact with others in a professional manner. In all interactions, IACMR members are expected to 

rise to the professional standards of conduct. 

Conference Participation. Conference participation is encouraged whether or not a paper has been submitted. When an 

author or group of authors submit a paper to a conference, it should be done with a commitment to the conference by the 

author(s) that at least one of the authors of the paper has agreed to attend the conference to present the paper, should it 

be accepted. It is an honor to have a paper accepted. Recognition of one's work cannot be treated lightly. This expected 

professional conduct is also a sign of respect for other conference attendees who wish to learn about the research 

discussed in the paper. Conferences are occasions for exchanging research ideas, for meeting potential collaborators, and 

for discussing research projects. It is a venue for actively engaging with others, not just passively listening to paper 

presentations. Conferences provide the attendees the opportunity to engage in the intellectual exchanges of giving 

feedback to others on their research and receiving feedback from others on their own work, without regard to one's status 

or rank. In our professional exchange, we are all equals. 

IACMR Member Responsibility. Through this commitment to ethical research behavior, IACMR provides ongoing, 

socially responsible guidance for its members. Members should work to raise awareness of other members concerning 

social and ethical responsibilities and encourage the acceptance of these responsibilities. Members should notify officers 

or appropriate committees of practices or actions of members that may violate the spirit of this commitment to ethical 

research behavior, professional standards or the organizations rules and regulations. The goals and aspirations of this 

commitment are developed through an ongoing discussion of the responsibilities and values of IACMR.
