THE

COMMUNITY

The City of Corona is conveniently

located 25 miles from Southern California

family theme parks and 45 miles from local

beaches and Los Angeles in western Riverside

County. The City limit encompasses 39.2 square miles and is

home to a population of approximately 153,649 residents. A city

whose heritage spans more than a century, Corona has emerged

as an ethnically diverse community, where a significant percentage

of the population is made up of young, well educated families.

The Corona community boasts many amenities that provide a firstrate

quality of life for residents. The City has more than 394 acres of

parks, with sports fields, basketball courts, playgrounds, tennis courts,

two skateparks and an outdoor pool.

The Corona Public Library and the Fender Museum of Music and the

Arts provide cultural and educational programming, and the Senior

Center is a hub of activity with programs, workshops and social gatherings.

The City also operates a recreational airport.

Corona’s industrial base has played an important role in the growth of

Department is to enhance the

quality of life in our city through

excellence in policing. In partnership

with our community and through

education, prevention, and enforcement,

we will maintain order, deter

crime, and achieve a presence of

security. Our members pride themselves

in being the model for law

enforcement with vision, while

performing with integrity and professionalism.

The Corona Police Department

prides itself on the quality of its

staff. All 248 sworn and civilian

personnel show professionalism in

providing service to the community.

The Department consists of Administration;

Personnel Section; Administrative

Support; Community Relations;

Training Section; Patrol; Traffic;

Animal Control; Communication

Services; Special Enforcement and

Tactics Team; Air Support Unit; Investigation

Bureau; Records Section;

Vice, Narcotics and Intelligence

Section; Youth and Family Services;

Defensive Tactics Training; K-9/

Mounted Police Unit; and Special

Response Team and has an operating

budget of $43,746,647.

THE IDEAL

CANDIDATE

The Police Chief reports to the City

Manager and is responsible for

oversight of Police management,


supervisory, professional,

technical and clerical staff.

The ideal candidate will

have the ability to clearly

communicate, be sensitive

to the fiscal issues

currently facing local

government, and maintain

positive relationships with

key members of the Community

and City staff. Candidates

will possess the highest level of integrity and

honesty.

The new Chief should be approachable with excellent interpersonal

skills; the Chief should elicit the respect and trust of Department staff,

City management, the City Council and the community. The selected

individual should be a team player who emphasizes community relations,

excellence in the quality of law enforcement, professionalism,

integrity and timeliness. The new Chief should serve as an example

to staff, setting a high standard and encouraging

professional growth, development and training.

Corona would benefit from an individual who has

a background managing and maintaining a budget,

is a skilled negotiator, and has the ability to analyze

and solve problems as they arise. The ideal candidate

will assist in developing local ordinances related

to public safety matters and analyze crime data to

oversee initiatives to reduce crime and promote crime

prevention.

A Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, public administration or

related field and ten years of increasingly responsible professional

local law enforcement and related activities, including

two or more years of management level experience, are

required, as are a POST certification, Advanced Management

and Supervisory certification or equivalent professional

certification.

COMPENSATION

The salary for the incoming police

chief ranges from $12,875-

$15,717 monthly and is dependent

upon qualifications. The City also

offers an attractive benefits package

including:

Retirement – CalPERS 3.0 @ 50.

The City pays the 9% employee

contribution.

Medical Insurance – Employees’

and dependents’ health insurance

premiums are provided. A monthly

IRC plan contribution in an amount

equal to the premium payment

for Blue Shield family coverage

(currently $1476.46 per month).

There are a variety of plans to

choose from. Option to

waive medical insurance,

indexed at

2003 PERS Choice

rate equivalent to

your current coverage

(i.e. single $296.00,

employee + one

$596.00, family $770.00).

Annual Leave and Holidays –

27 (8 hour) working days (216

hours) of paid leave are earned

after one year of employment,

with additional days earned, based

on length of service, up to 36

(8 hour) days. There are 12 (8

hour) paid holidays (96 hours) per

calendar year.


Annual Leave Buyback – Eligible employees may

“buy back” a maximum of 160 hours of Annual Leave

once each year.

Disability and Life Insurance – Long term disability insurance

provided free for each employee, Also, a term life

insurance policy is provided to each employee equal to 5 ½

times the employee’s annual basic earnings to a maximum of

$750,000.

Deferred Compensation – Employees hired on or after

January 1, 1999 shall receive an additional payment into their

deferred compensation plan account of $150.00 per quarter plus

$150.00 per quarter to be deposited into a Retirement Health

Savings Account.

Other Benefits – Tuition Reimbursement, Bi-lingual Pay, Longevity

Pay, Direct Deposit, Flexible Spending Plan, Employee Assistance and

Counseling Program, uniform allowance, and Police Management

Marksmanship Proficiency, and Executive Leave option.
