ONLINE REGISTRATION
May/June 2010
Our first year pilot for online course registration for the 2010-2011 school year went well. We've worked through
a few minor glitches, and most of our students have a complete schedule requested for next year. Thank you to
everyone for helping us with this process. We hope that Family and Student Access is proving helpful to all of you
and promoting more family discussions regarding students' academic performance and future planning. If your
student has not yet completed course requests for next year, please encourage him/her to visit the counseling
office to complete that as soon as possible. Counselors are also working to find those students not yet finished.
THE SCHEDULING PROCESS
The following steps outline the remainder of our scheduling process:
1. Administrators will make decisions on classes to run next year and the number of sections of each.
2. Counselors will cut students from classes that did not have sufficient enrollment. Some students will be cut
from classes which had more requests than spots available. Those classes will be replaced by alternates.
That’s why it is so important to list at least three realistic alternates.
3. Each academic department will decide which teachers will teach which courses. Then, administrators will begin
to build the schedule by trimester and hour. This typically happens around June.
4. The computer assigns as many classes to students as possible; then, counselors complete the process manually.
Students receive schedules at orientation in August.
CONFIRMATION LETTERS
Once the above steps have taken place closer to May or June, we will be asking families to print out a confirmation
of course requests. These may or may not look slightly different than the original requests based on section/
class availability. Once printed, we will ask that you note any special requests, sign, and return to the Guidance
Office. THIS IS YOUR OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE SPECIAL REQUESTS!! We will attempt to accommodate
every request possible. We prefer this is done on the confirmation letter rather than after the school year begins
as classes tend to fill quickly. Please continue to check for updates on Family Access.
College Fair!
Requesting information from multiple colleges/universities at this College
Fair just got a whole lot easier. Students who pre-register and
Tips for attending the National College Fairs:
1. Before the fair, discuss your college plans with your guidance counselor, family, teachers, and
friends about the different types of schools you’d like to attend (e.g. two or four year institution,
large or small, extracurricular activities, programs of study, etc.).
2. Research colleges on the internet, in Career Cruising, with your counselor, or at the library.
3. Visit with colleges and universities which you feel meet your criteria.
Workshops are available on a walk-in basis. Topics include: Admission Basics, Application Tips, Scholarships and Adjusting to College.
MICHIGAN YOUTH CHALLENGE ACADEMY:
IS YOUR STUDENT STRUGGLING TO EARN CREDITS TOWARD GRADUATION
Michigan Youth Challenge Academy, based in Fort Custer near Battle Creek, is a residential program for
teenagers between the ages of 16 and 19 that offers them an opportunity to change their lives and make a
future for themselves. An upcoming cycle begins July 11, 2010.
The main component of MYCA is a twenty-week program that includes 400 hours of classroom instruction to
prepare cadets for the G.E.D. exam. Students will also receive 160 hours of specific vocational training.
Successful graduates can receive 13 college credits from Kalamazoo Valley Community College in addition
to a full semester of high school credits.
There is no cost for the program. Meals, housing, and uniforms are all provided. This Academy is paid for by
the U.S. Department of Defense and the State of Michigan. There is no military obligation for participation
either. For more information, please call 1-800-372-0523 or 1-616-968-1067 or visit the website at
www.michigan.gov.dmva
WHEN SHOULD MY STUDENT TAKE THE ACT
Rockford Summer School
Page 3
Rockford’s summer school program is a credit recovery program. In order to enroll for the
program, students must have taken and failed the course in question. Classes can not be
taken unless the student has already attempted to earn credit for at least one trimester.
Classes being offered so far include:
English 9 and 10
Pre-Algebra
Algebra
Geometry
US History
World Studies 1 and 2
Biology
Earth Science
Life Science
Health
Tip: If your student has already struggled
with a class during the regular school year,
a big advantage of summer school is that
a student can complete that credit in only
4 weeks as opposed to retaking that same
class for another entire trimester, which
would last twelve weeks.
If your student has failed a semester of any of these classes, summer school is a great option.
You may register soon online at www.rpssignmeup.com or with a paper application,
which will be available soon in the guidance office.
If dates and times for Rockford Summer School conflict with your summer schedule, the
guidance office has information available from other area summer school programs.
Dates of instruction are July 12 to August 6. The first session will be, approximately, 7:30-
10:00 and the late morning session will run 10:15-12:45.
SENIORS: IMPORTANT NOTICE
REGARDING SENIOR SURVEYS
All seniors must complete a senior survey regardless of whether or not they plan to attend
college. It is important for us to know of our students’ future plans, whether that
be college, vocational training, military, gap year, travel, or work force.
The information requested is also used for recognition of scholarship awards at our annual
honors convocation and for determining financial aid from the Rockford Scholarship
Program.
Note: Please print page 4, complete and return to counseling office by May 5, 2010.
