What is a Certified Athletic<br />

Trainer<br />

Certified athletic trainers (ATCs) are unique health care providers who<br />

specialize in the prevention, assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of<br />

injuries and illnesses that occur to athletes and the physically active.<br />

(Provided by the National Athletic Trainers Association)<br />

Specialist in Sports Medicine in Injury prevention, injury assessment,<br />

injury treatment, Injury rehabilitation, protective tapping and padding.<br />

Over 70 percent of current certified athletic trainers in New Jersey hold<br />

advanced degrees.<br />

New Jersey certified athletic trainers are licensed healthcare providers by<br />

the State Board of Medical Examiners. <strong>High</strong> school athletic trainers are<br />

also certificated through the New Jersey Department of Education.<br />

Knowledge includes anatomy and physiology, injury/illness assessment,<br />

therapeutic modalities, therapeutic exercise, pharmacology and nutrition.<br />

Certified athletic trainers must maintain Certification in CPR and AED


Athletic Training Services<br />

Certified Athletic Trainer available before, during and after<br />

practices and home games.<br />

Fully equipped Athletic Training Room to provide treatment,<br />

evaluation and rehabilitation of injuries.<br />

Preventative taping, padding and treatment.<br />

Skin checks.<br />

Consultations for injury prevention exercise programs.<br />

If injury needs evaluation by a physician, if needed referral list of<br />

possible physicians and other health care providers will be<br />

provided. The list of providers works very closely with the<br />

<strong>Barnegat</strong> Sports Medicine Program to provide the best quality of<br />

care to the students involved.<br />

Pre Participation Physical<br />

Must be completed and approved by the<br />

school nurse or certified athletic trainer<br />

and school physician before any student<br />

can participate in any mandatory<br />

practices, scrimmages or games.<br />

Physicals are good for one calendar year<br />

(365 days).<br />

Physicals are offered every Summer at<br />

BHS for students interested in athletics.


<strong>School</strong> Accident Insurance<br />

When a student is injured, student/parent should inform the coach and the<br />

Certified Athletic Trainer as soon as possible in order for all forms to be filed in<br />

a timely manner.<br />

Bollinger Insurance Solutions provides coverage on an EXCESS BASIS.<br />

– Those medical expenses, which are NOT payable by your own personal or<br />

group insurance, are eligible for coverage under this policy up to the limits.<br />

Please follow the instructions for filing a claim.<br />

All claims must be mailed by parent to Bollinger within 90 days of the date of<br />

the accident.<br />

If you do not have your own personal insurance, please let Bollinger know when<br />

you call and they will give you the number for Consumer Health Network who<br />

will work with you to get providers who will accept the negotiated rate.<br />

A copy of the accident report and the Bollinger Claim form is sent home for all<br />

injuries that are reported that need a physician evaluation.<br />

All questions regarding benefits must be directed to Bollinger at the number<br />

provided on the claim form.


Physician Visits<br />

We are continuously developing relationships<br />

with various health care providers in the area to<br />

help care for our students in the Athletic<br />

Department.<br />

<strong>School</strong> Physician, Orthopeadic physicians, Sports<br />

Medicine Specialists, Physical Therapists, etc.<br />

If a student sees a physician for any reason a<br />

note for return to play from the a physician needs<br />

to be presented before returning to any practice<br />

or game. The note must be approved by the<br />

school nurse, certified athletic trainer and school<br />

physician.


NJSIAA Steroid Testing<br />

2005 Governor Cody signed Executive Order 72, which directed the New Jersey,<br />

Department of Education and the NJSIAA to develop and implement a program<br />

of random testing for steroids and other performance enhancing substances<br />

NJSIAA mandate.<br />

– The NJSIAA is the state organization that governs high school athletics.<br />

– Must sign in order to be eligible to participate in interscholastic athletics<br />

Any person who tests positive in an NJSIAA-administered test, or any person<br />

who refuses to provide a testing sample, or any person who reports his or her<br />

own violation, will immediately forfeit his or her eligibility to participate in<br />

NJSIAA competition for a period of one year from the date of the test.<br />

Any such person will also forfeit any individual honor earned while in violation.<br />

No person who tests positive, refuses to provide a test sample, or who reports<br />

his or her own violation will resume eligibility until he or she has undergone<br />

counseling and produced a negative test result.<br />

NJSIAA CONCUSSION POLICY<br />

STATEMENT<br />

Parents/guardians of a student-athlete, who participates in interscholastic athletics,<br />

shall receive on an annual basis, per each year the student-athlete participates, a<br />

concussion informational sheet.<br />

The student-athlete and their parents/guardians shall sign one copy of the<br />

informational sheet acknowledging the receipt of this information.<br />

These forms are to be given to the proper authorities in the school district prior to<br />

the student-athlete initiating involvement in athletics. Failure to comply with the<br />

provision of this shall preclude the student-athlete from participating in athletics<br />

related to the desired sport.<br />

ANNUAL TRAINING RELATED TO CONCUSSION:<br />

– Coaches, athletic trainers, and physicians employed by the school district should have<br />

concussion training annually<br />

– Officials should receive annual training from their chapters.<br />

RETURN-TO-PLAY GUIDELINES<br />

– A student-athlete who is suspected of sustaining or who has sustained a concussion and/or<br />

has become unconscious during an athletic event shall not return-to-play until (s)he meets all<br />

of the following criteria:<br />

1. Immediate removal from play and no return-to-play that day.<br />

2. Medical evaluation by appropriate medical personnel to determine the<br />

presence/absence of concussion.<br />

3. Student-athlete diagnosed by a physician with a concussion complete a symptom-free<br />

week initiated on the first asymptomatic day before initiating a graduated return-to-play<br />

exercise protocol. The student-athlete must be monitored during this time period for any<br />

reoccurrence of concussion symptoms.<br />
