The first National Collegiate Shag
Dance Championship was held at
“2001 Night Club” on Saturday
night, January 29th 2011. Six colleges
and universities entered for the
bragging rights to the title. NC State,
UNC Charlotte, University of SC,
The College of Charleston, East Carolina
University, and Coastal Carolina
University. Only one couple from
each college was allowed to compete.

Clifford Curry might have ‘paid his dues’ with more
than 55 years in music. The Knoxville, TN, native joined
the Echos while attending Austin High School there;
they were four years old when Curry joined them to
back Faye Adams on her number one R&B hit "Shake a
Hand." Reorganizing, the group cut two records as the
Five Pennies for Savoy Records ("Mr. Moon" and "My
Heart Trembles," 1955 and 1956 respectively).
Hitting a deadend with the Five Pennies, Curry and
some other Knoxville friends formed the Bingos, joining
Excello Records which issued their single on its Nasco
subsidiary, renaming them the Hollyhocks.
Maurice Williams, Clifford Curry, Billy Scott
Since then, Clifford has written hundreds of songs,
for himself and others.
Not that he was through with performing. He joined
the Bubba Suggs Band in 1959, recorded as Sweet
Clifford, the Fabulous Six, and the Contenders.
Curry tried his hand at songwriting again, with
Knoxville DJ Rob Galbraith, for others.
Clifford’s collaboration with Galbraith bore fruit in
1967, not with one of their songs, but with a Galbraith/
Buzz Cason tune entitled "She Shot a Hole in My Soul"
on Elf Records. Seven more Elf singles followed (from
1967–1969), along with three each on SSS, Caprice,
and Abbott Records spanning 1970 to 1973.
57 years from his beginnings, Clifford is writing and
recording as much as ever. His latest is on Buy American.
Clay McClinton (Delbert’s son) appears for the
first time as part of a Beach Music compilation. Clay
appears in part through Cassie Fox, Promotional
Director for Shanty’s Records, who had been talking
to Clay’s agent.
Mark Roberts brings a new song, already charting,
outside his recent CDs. “Don’t Let the Sun
Catch You Crying” was a breath-stopper at the recent
Carolina Beach Music Awards in North Myrtle
Beach and the Alabama Theatre.
Clifford Curry has supplied “I Love Women” from
the 80s and “Set Me Free” from the 90s. CEO David
Wade includes them because, in his words, “they’re
both forgotten songs.”
Lakeside Drive Band doesn’t have a CD - yet. But
both of their songs are already Beach charted, “Candy
Girl” went to #1, and “I’m Still In Love with You,” a
collaboration with Gene Pharr of the Continentals is
riding up the charts now.
Gary Lowder, who fronts for the Carolina Breakers,
appears solo here on an original composition,
“Been There Before.”

According to Butch Underwood, Publicity Chair for
the Society of Brunswick Shaggers, the S.O.B.S. was
founded in Shallotte, North Carolina in 1993 and moved
to Oak Island around 2000.
The club has grown to approximately 200 members

Over the past 8 years, the S.O.B.S. (yes, they are cardcarrying

On the February 25th
Roadhouse Blues, Boogie and Fish
Fry radio show (25 stations and the
Internet) we spotlighted the Fish Fry
music of Meteor records. And we
promised to feature photos of some
of those exceedingly rare records in
this issue of DOTE News.
The Bihari Brothers, who
launched Modern Music records in
L.A. in the late 40s were also the

originators of RPM Records, Flair,
and Kent.
In November 1952 they started
Meteor records in Memphis to as
headquarters from which they could
seek out, sign and record regional
Southern talent.
The first recording session was
November 1952 with Elmo (Elmore)
James and the Broomdusters which
included J.T. (Big Boy) Brown on
Island Time for Good Times!

tenor sax, Johnny Jones on the piano,
and Odie Payne on drums. Both
songs became Elmo standards -
especially “I Believe” (b/w “I Held
My Baby Last Night”).
As for how many Shag and Bop
tunes there were on Meteor; that
depends upon your favored tempo,
and whether you’re willing, or like
to, slow them down or speed them
up. Here, then is a very general guide

to tunes which fit somewhere along
the spectrum of slow to fast Shag.
Carl “Mr. Broadway” Green
performed at Meteor’s third
recording session in Los Angeles,
February 4, 1953. His “Four Years,
Seven Days” has a just right beat for
Fish Fry enthusiasts.
