M-SERIES MOLTEN METAL PUMPS
TRANSFER PUMPS FOR ZINC AND ALUMINIUM
Metaullics
M-Series pumps are designed for use in nonferrous
molten metals having working temperatures below
1600°F (871°C). These pumps were designed for,
and have a proven history of, a long operating life
and efficient and reliable operation.
POST CONSTRUCTION
Posts are made from SST grade graphite, then
covered with a ceramic sleeve. Graphite is an
excellent material that holds its strength at elevated
temperatures. When treated with Metaullics ® ’
proprietary oxidation-resistant treatment process it
provides long life. Ceramic sleeves provide an added
level of protection to the posts. Sleeves provide an
additional barrier to oxygen and protect against
abrasion from surface drosses. After assembly the
post is coated with boron nitride to further protect
against attack by the molten metal.
IMPELLER OPTIONS
Bladed style and the birdcage style impellers are available with the birdcage being
standard. The M-12 is a bottom feed pump, and a 4-bladed impeller is an option.
The M-28 is a top feed pump, but bottom feed is an option with either a birdcage
or bladed impeller.
SHAFT OPTIONS
Standard shafts are ceramic-coated graphite with moly-tungsten shafts optional
for the zinc industry.
HIGH LIFT CAPABILITY
M-Series pumps can pump aluminium as high as 20 ft (6 m) for applications such
as filling over-the-road ladles while they remain on the transport truck. The zinc
industry also takes advantage of this capability for high-lift applications.
AIR DRIVE AND ELECTRIC DRIVE OPTIONS
M-Series pumps are available with either air or
electric motor drive systems. Air systems are often
more convenient to install and operate, while
electric motors require electrical panels and cooling
fans, yet are more energy efficient to operate and
provide more precise control.
PUMP FEATURES
• High efficiency impellers—specifically
designed for the application
• Precision bearings and seals—designed
with tight tolerances to ensure all bearings
carry an equal load with minimum internal
leakage
• Rigid motor mounts—minimize distortion
and have machined mounting surfaces to
ensure perfect motor alignment
• Quick delivery—transfer pumps provide fast
and easy delivery of molten metal. They are
much faster than tap holes and operate with
the press of a button
• Safety—quick on / off operations by an
operator away from the metal but with full
view of the operation. No troublesome tap
holes to plug at the end of a pour
• Flexible delivery systems—can be
constructed with refractory lined pipe to
deliver metal up to 82 ft (25 m) in distance
FURNACE INSTALLATIONS
Transfer pumps are used in melters, holders, or wherever molten metal is handled.
The furnace must have an external well of sufficient size to accommodate the
pump, often as an extension of the charging well with a bridge-wall installed to
isolate and protect the pump from physical damage by direct contact with the
charged material and fluxing salts.
TRANSFER PIPING
M-Series transfer pumps can be used in conjunction with refractory lined steel
transfer piping to avoid dross formation and energy loss inherent with other transfer
mediums.
In addition to the high insulating properties, the
transfer pipe liners are non-wetted by aluminium and
zinc alloys and do not require preheating. Premium
grades are available for greater wear resistance and
life. Insulated transfer piping limits heat loss to less
than 0.5°F per foot (~ 1°C per meter) of length without
the need for external heating.
