BACKGROUND:
Established in the early 1960’s, the Janice and Philip J. Levin Music Center is a second home to 1510 young,
creative musicians living in Tel Aviv -Jaffa. The Center is more than just a music school. For 1510 students it is
the place where four times a week, they come together in order to be introduced to the world of music,
develop musical awareness, and learn to appreciate different musical traditions. The Center makes an
important contribution to the cultural life of hundreds of children from the greater Tel Aviv area - be they
Jewish, Muslim or Christian.
Since the establishment of the State, Israel has been defining and creating its own cultural identity. Music is a
vital part of this process. The road towards an integrated society which develops and leads an active musical
life begins with a sound musical education.
At the Levin Music Center, music is seen as a means to better society. The Center believes that music helps
broaden the personality of the growing child and that effort invested in mastering control over a musical
instrument and gradually improving technical skills fosters self-discipline. It contends that the concentration
required to perfect a performance or unravel the hidden secrets of a musical text teach staying power and
dedication.
The Levin Music Center’s main goal is to locate and nurture youngsters who will grow up to be the future
generations of creative musicians in Israel – composers, soloists, chamber performers and members of various
orchestras and ensembles. Since the 1960’s, many of the Center’s graduates have joined some of the best
orchestras in the country including the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, the Kibbutz Orchestra, the Raanana
Symphonette and the Rishon LeZion Symphony Orchestra. Others have gone on to teach, to inspire and to
become the country’s concert-goers.
The Levin Center's auditorium is often used for major national and international musical events. The
International Tel Aviv – Jaffa Opera Workshops and the Israeli Young Jazz Ensemble Festival are held at this
venue on an annual basis. Many Levin graduates play with the IDF orchestra and then, after their army service,
go on to study music at music academies in Israel and abroad. Some have returned to the Center to teach and
give workshops.

THE TEL AVIV – JAFFA YOUTH ORCHESTRA
The Center’s “jewel in the crown” is the Tel Aviv – Jaffa Youth Orchestra, a full-scale symphonic band that
performs throughout the country and tours abroad every two years. The Orchestra regularly appears at
diplomatic events held at the official residence of the President of Israel. Indeed, it was this orchestra that
performed for former President Bill Clinton during his 1996 visit to Israel. Additionally, Jewish Federations
from around the world have invited the Tel Aviv-Jaffa Youth Orchestra to do concerts abroad. The State of
Israel has chosen this orchestra to represent it in countries as far away as China.
The Tel Aviv – Jaffa Youth Orchestra maintains its own music library, consisting of hundreds of musical pieces.
This vast selection enables the Orchestra to put together programs of great musical variety, which include
classical masterpieces, Israeli and Jewish folk music, Middle Eastern fare and many works by leading Israeli
composers commissioned especially for the orchestra. The knowledge gained through decades of
performances domestically and overseas, coupled with the rare qualities of an orchestra made up of children
from vastly diverse ethnic traditions ensure that any concert given by The Tel Aviv – Jaffa Youth Orchestra will
be an emotionally-moving and musically-enriching experience.
THE VISION:
As the Levin Center believes that each and every child in Tel Aviv and Jaffa should be exposed to the world of
music and have the option of making music a part of his or her life, it also runs a program that provides
musical education to children from underprivileged neighborhoods. Musical teaching staff is assigned to
participating schools. Students receive private instruction in playing a musical instrument and join the school
orchestra. After graduating from the sixth grade, talented students can continue on at the Center.
It is the Levin Music Center’s goal to reach all the elementary schools in Tel Aviv-Jaffa and to turn the city into
“a city of sounds". The Center promotes coexistence through music and runs very successfully several
programs in Jaffa where Muslims, Christians and Jews live and play side by side. Thanks to the efforts of the
Levin Center, there are 4 Elementary Schools in Jaffa now has a joint the program and participate in the
Jewish-Arab schools’ bands.

THE NEED:
There are approximately 400 musically-gifted children from underprivileged neighborhoods,
ages 8-12 who wish to study at the Janice and Philip J. Levin Music Center. The Center does
not have the means to buy all needed instruments for these children. The Center also requires
funding to cover the costs of supplying light meals and refreshments to all of its students.
