H1021 Joint Program: Section for Senior
Members and Section on Administration
and Practice Management
Planning for Retirement In an Uncertain
Economy
The Section for Senior Members (SFSM) and
the Section on Administration and Practice
Management (SOAPM) are joining forces to
address a number of critical issues affecting practicing
pediatricians. The first half of the session
will address the issue of preparing for retirement
or reduction of time in practice. Speakers will
address this from both a macro- and microeconomic
perspective, highlighting the need for
practices to balance the interests of senior and
junior partners. Speakers will address issues
of physician wellness, specifically how practices
have responded to personal crises (health and
otherwise) to ensure the optimal health of the
individual while also maintaining a stable and
financially healthy practice. The Charles “Buzzy”
Vanchiere Award will be presented during the
ticketed luncheon. The second half of the session
will address more traditional practice management
issues. Coding experts will tackle the issue
of coding and payment for activities related to the
medical home model. Speakers will also address
the increasing role of technology and the impact
on the private health care system overall. SOAPM
is pleased to welcome back the members of the
Board of Directors for ongoing dialogue on important
practice management topics.
S1034 Protect Your Practice From Medical
Liability
How can you protect your practice from medical liability
before it happens By learning pediatric-specific
risk management techniques to increase patient
safety and decrease medicolegal risks. This session
will present specific actions pediatricians can take
to avoid adverse outcomes, miscommunication, and
cognitive and procedural errors. By drawing lessons
from real malpractice cases and interactive dialogue
to emphasize the important issues, participants will
learn how to apply these techniques to their practice.
Questions will be encouraged from the attendees.
Faculty: Robert Mendelson, MD, FAAP
Sponsored by the Committee Medical Liability and Risk Management
and Section on Administration & Practice Management
S1085 Rules and Techniques for Voluntary
Disclosure and Apology of Medical Errors
Most pediatricians are unaware of the more than
30 state laws now in effect to reduce barriers to
disclosure and apology for adverse events and medical
errors and their effects on patient satisfaction,
litigation costs, and quality of care. This session will
discuss these issues and effects of disclosure and
apology initiatives. Several role-playing scenarios will
be presented involving participants in both appropriate
and inappropriate disclosure and apology
techniques.
