Historic display set to be centrepiece of
200th Otley Show
A display covering the 200-
year history of Otley Show,
Britain’s oldest annual oneday
agricultural show, is set
to be the centrepiece of the
bicententary event on
Saturday, May 16 – the first
major regional agricultural
event of the 2009 season.
Mervyn Lister, president of
organisers Wharfedale
Agricultural Society, told
the annual meeting that the
display would shine the
spotlight on all aspects of
farming and agriculture over the past two centuries, supported by a moving pageant
depicting rural life.
Attractions already lined up for the 200th show include a jousting tournament by The Knights
of the Damned, Yorkshire Military Marching Band, Otley Brass Band, Mountgrace Gun Dog
Display, Ben Potter Birds of Prey, The Sheep Show - a live stage show about sheep breeds and
wool, including a dancing sheep - National Vintage Engine Club, flyfishing and dry stone
walling demonstrations, Badsworth and Bramham Moor Hunt, and pet animals. A bicentenary
Heavy Horse Turnout Challenge is also on the agenda, with regular supporter Paul Clayton,
of PM Clayton Transport, Bradford, putting up a total of £2,500 - £300 for each of the six
turnouts that will be there, plus £500 for the champion and £250 for the reserve champion.
Anthony Gribbin, of the Leaventhorpe Hall Group of Companies, Thornton, Bradford – he also
runs an equestrian centre there - is also putting up £500 in sponsorship for the Shire
Championship, which features a qualifier for the Horse of the Year Show. The Irish Draught
Horse Society has also agreed to give special rosettes to all their exhibitors at the show,
which will culminate with a fireworks display late in the evening.
On average, Otley Show attracts 15,000 visitors and remains a highlight in the town’s
calendar. Organisers are pulling out all the stops in a bid to make the 2009 show, to be held
at the Bridge End show ground, one of the biggest and best in living memory.
It will again feature traditional livestock and animal classes - cattle, sheep, horses, goats,
poultry, rabbits and dogs, supported by classes showcasing the best of local produce,
handicrafts, floral art, farriers … and more, including a grand parade of champions.
Some 1,000 exhibitors regularly submit up to 4,000 entries in the show classes, with a record
entry anticipated for the bicentenary event. In addition, more than 100 trade stands and
food outlets, plus up to 50 craft exhibitors, are expected to be in attendance.
Major sponsors to date include Waitrose supermarket, stationery company Wm Sinclair &
Sons, Stephen H Smith Garden & Leisure, B&TS Builders Merchants, accountants BFE Brays,
all based locally, and L’anson Bros, Masham.
Full details about the 2009 show, along with sponsorship opportunities for the 200th event,
are available from secretary Janet Raw at 15 Bridge Street, Otley, 01943 462541 or 07961
966952. They are also posted on the website at www.otleyshow.org.uk
At the society’s annual meeting, all officials were re-elected, including president Mervyn
Lister for his final year in office, with ground committee vice-chairman Barry Halvorsen
newly elected onto the executive committee. Honorary life memberships were awarded to
Brian and Thelma Wilson, Bruce Everall and TG “Big Mick” Mickle.
Otley Rugby Club are to join in the fun of the Otley
on the Cross Green ground, starting at 7-00 pm. A
large stage is to be built in the main stand and the
audience is invited to bring their picnics, chairs and
tables, or just rugs and choose a site on the pitch,
although there will be a champagne bar, wine bar
and hand pulled beer on offer plus food, including
a hog roast. There will be a professional acoustic
system with audience monitoring and facilities for
a drop-off at the ground and a nearby car park.
The concert will consist of music to suit all tastes
with two highly successful soloists, The Sellers
International Youth Band and the Fairfax Singers, a
well established local choir.
Born in Otley, soprano Joanne Dexter studied music
at the Royal Scottish Academy and Italian at the
University of Peruga. She has sung many roles for
Opera North, English Touring Opera and at Covent
Garden.
Baritone Neil Baker studied at the Royal Northern
College of Music during which time he won many
prestigious awards and since then has worked at
the Festival of Aix-en Provence, the Salzburg Easter
Festival, Glyndebourne and at Opera Houses
throughout Europe, most recently at Paris, a
performance broadcast on Radio 3.
The Sellers International Youth Band was formed in
Huddersfield eleven years ago and since then has
become very successful in both local and national
Brass Band competitions and toured the European
Capitals.
The Fairfax singers, under their Musical Director
Mrs Dorothy Hawkshaw, have been in existence for
13 years and have raised many thousands of pounds
for charity. Variety is their aim, from ballads to
blues, madrigals to musicals, sacred to swing,
traditional to trendy and will gladly sing for anyone
supporting a good cause.
Every effort will be made to ensure a grand finish
to what, over the years, has become a wonderful
Otley Day.

Julia Johnson
Long Service Award
The Town Mayor
Councillor Spencer is
delighted to report
that the Town
Council’s Community
Development Officer,
Mrs Julia Johnson has
had her long service
to the community
recognised. 25 years
ago Mrs Johnson
joined Leeds City
Council and 12 years
ago she was seconded
to the Town Council.
For all those years Mrs
Johnson has
devotedly served the
community helping to develop vital community groups that are the
heartbeat of the Town.
Known to everybody simply as Julia her friendly, approachable and
enthusiastic manner has brought success with a smile to so many
organisations and individuals within the Town. It does not seem to matter
what the topic, Julia will know somebody who can help. Raising funds is
a vital part of her work for without these monies so much less could be
achieved for the Town. Key successes include setting up Behind Closed
Doors, sourcing funds for Otley’s first Skate Park, being a foundation
member behind Otley Walkers.
The Town Clerk expressed his pleasure at the award to his colleague as
Julia is a fine example of a dedicated Town Council Officer without whose
efforts Otley would be that much the poorer.
Silence is Golden
Silence is golden, so the saying goes,
but it can also be the biggest
nightmare. Just imagine if
one day you woke up and
everybody around you were
talking and you couldn’t
Speak
ability
understand what they were saying, and when you tried to speak the words
wouldn’t come out, or they were just gobble-de-gook.
That’s what it is like when one has had a stroke. You are unable to ask for
the simplest thing, a drink, or food, even the toilet. The mind is working
normally, but the body isn’t. This condition is known as APHASIA, which
means that the person has difficulty with reading or, writing or speaking,
or any combination of the three, (even the ability to think “normally” and
understand). I have personal experience; I had a stroke 2 years ago.
Fortunately there are organisations and charities which are there to help,
(besides the speech and language therapist in hospitals).
SPEAKABILITY is such a charity, lesser known than the Stroke Association,
but set up to raise awareness of the condition of Aphasia and sufferers
from it (not to mention their carers), and to give support to those people.
I found out about Speakability, and decided to attend the local group here
in Otley, and join, eventually being elected as chairperson for the group.
It is a self help, self run group, we meet on the third Thursday of each
month in the Civic Centre, on Cross Green, our aim is to try to support and
help each other, new members are always welcome. Our meetings are very
informal and social.
We arrange outings and guest speakers from time to time. We were lucky
enough to benefit from the Otley Beer Festival, as we were chosen as a
local charitable organisation, receiving a very generous gift donation.
Bellman’s
Corner
I’m all in favour of
recycling. It’s obvious to
anyone that dumping tons of
unwanted things into
landfills is both wasteful and
polluting. As an ethnic
Dalesman I’m genetically
programmed to hang on to
stuff. I’ve got a house full
of paraphernalia that any
sane person would have
chucked out years ago.
I know in my heart of hearts
that I’ll never find a use for
that Universal TV remote control – it’s never worked but one day
it might so it languishes in my ‘odds and ends’ box next to a bunch
of keys that I will continue to hang on to until I find a lock that
they’ll fit. There’s a lovely cuff link that I bought 20 years ago,
I’ve an assortment of batteries; some of which may have a bit of
life left. Some small tins of paint which might come in useful if I
ever take up model making again and I’m sure that’s a condenser
for a Mark 3 Triumph spitfire.
When I was a lad we had a different name for recycling, it was
called ‘make do and mend’. When your bed sheets were worn out
they were torn up to make dusters. Shoes were resoled not
recycled and food was never binned because it was out of code by
a day. Leftovers from the Sunday joint were recycled into cold
cuts on Monday and rissoles on Tuesday. I’ve got to stop here
because I’m beginning to sound like my dad. I’ll be on about beer
at tuppence next.
I’m trying to be green, honestly, I’ve had a biodegradable
shopping bag for the past twp years. I use it every day and it still
shows no sign of dropping to bits. Should I take it back and
complain
Yours, for crying out loud !
Riding for the Disabled
Two of Otley and District Group Riding for the Disabled
long serving volunteers Margaret and Geoff Pollard have
decided to retire from the group after over eighteen years
of service. Their work has been very much appreciated by
the group over the years and they will be missed.
Margaret and Geoff were present when Princess Anne
Men’s Forum
To many of us, retirement from restrictive and paid
employment gives us a freedom that we can use to
expand our knowledge and interests in a variety of
different subjects and spheres.
Men of various ages, interests, and outlooks from
many different previous working environments
come together at Otley Men’s Forum to meet
others with inquisitive minds, a thirst for
knowledge, enjoyment and good company.
From the beginning of September until the end of
May we meet every other Thursday in The Main Hall
of Otley Civic Centre. However because of the
proposed closure for refurbishment of the Civic
Centre, like other user groups, we have to change
the venue for our fortnightly meetings. We are
planning for this coming September to move to the
Club House of Otley Rugby Union Football Club at
Cross Green. Although a little further from the town
centre its car parking facilities will be attractive to
both existing and new members who wish to enjoy
the camaraderie and friendship we offer.
There are seven talks remaining in our current
programme with varied subjects ranging from
Leeds to Africa, New Zealand to the Outer
Hebrides and including Power Stations and Flight.
If you can spare an hour or two for enjoyment
every other Thursday morning please come and
join us. The talks each last about one hour and are
followed by coffee and biscuits.
Membership is free and the atmosphere most
welcoming. We start at 10-00am and charge £1-00
for admission and refreshments. During April we
are meeting at the Civic Centre on the 2nd, 16th,
and 30th.
Spring Butterflies
Apart from the occasional butterfly tempted out of hibernation
by a sunny day in winter, the first to show in any numbers in the
early spring are likely to be Peacocks, Small Tortoiseshells or
Commas. Although strikingly coloured, some individuals may
appear ragged for these are last year’s butterflies that have
overwintered, often in garden sheds, hollow trees, woodpiles
or on sheltered tree trunks, and now emerge to mate and lay
eggs. There is then a gap of several months when few of the
butterflies are seen while their eggs hatch into caterpillars that
grow and pupate before emerging in their new finery in late summer.
These three species lay their eggs on young nettles which then provide
food for the caterpillars. One of the best places to see them around Otley is on the
abundance of nettles growing on the old sewage beds of Gallows Hill Nature Reserve, at
the edge of the town along Pool Road, but they will use any nettle patch left in a corner
of the garden.
Not all the spring butterflies have hibernated as adults. Orange-tips spend the winter in
chrysalis form before emerging as adults in early May. They will be around for just a few
weeks to mate and lay eggs but will then not be seen again until the following spring.
One of the most beautiful of the spring butterflies is the Holly Blue which also survives the
winter as a chrysalis. They like woodland edges and gardens with trees but frustratingly
are often seen only in flight as they prefer to settle high in the trees where they feed on
the honeydew produced by aphids rather than on flowers at ground level. As their name
implies, the spring females lay their eggs on holly although females hatching later in the
year will use ivy.
Denis O’Connor
OTLEY Chamber Orchestra
Since its foundation in January this year the Otley Chamber
Orchestra has rehearsed fortnightly at the Courthouse Arts
Centre. Members come from Otley and surrounding areas and
numbers have grown to over 50 experienced and capable
players including players in reserve who are keen to step in for
absentees. This is especially critical in the woodwind where one
player makes up half the section.
During the coming weeks as members settle into a regular attendance
routine, uninterrupted by winter flu viruses and snowy weather, the real work begins! It
is expected that the sense of musical ensemble will develop as quickly as the friendships
have been formed. Rehearsal of symphonies and overtures by Haydn, Mozart and
Beethoven is proving very satisfying, with a good balance between the full string and wind
sections. The orchestra seems set to become another Otley-based success story.
The Courthouse venue is ideal: an acoustically pleasing space, excellent facilities for
serving hot drinks during the break in rehearsals and free car parking nearby. This latter
is particularly important for orchestral musicians who seem always to be carrying plenty
of ‘luggage’!
When the time comes, it is hoped that friends and family will be invited to hear the fruits
of our labour as a preliminary to a fully public concert. However, plenty of rehearsing
lies ahead. It’s worth remembering that the great orchestras of Europe have a century
or more of rehearsals and tradition behind them, Otley Choral Society has been meeting
for 66 years and Otley Brass Band for 36. The Otley Chamber Orchestra feels to be very
much the new kid on the block!
(The OCO meets on the second and fourth Sunday of the month at 7.00pm.)
ROAD SAFETY COMMITTEE
Primary Schools’ Road Safety Quiz
Following the success of the 2008 Quiz, the Committee
are already working on a quiz for this year. This will be
held on Thursday 18th June, at The Methodist Church,
Boroughgate Otley. Commencing at 6.30pm.
18 schools have been invited to take part, from Otley
and Yeadon Ward, Adel and Wharfedale Ward and
Guiseley and Yeadon Ward.
The Quiz was very well supported last year, and we are
hoping for the same support this year. Teachers, Parents and Friends
always come along, and the Commitee very much appreciate the
support of our MP Mr Greg Mulholland and our local councillors.
Anyone interested in road safety issues, both adults or children, will
be very welcome. This is an opportunity to test your knowledge of
the Highway Code, whilst enjoying this fun evening.
Further information contact the Secretary:
Audrey Cartwright Otley 463942.
The Bridge Church
One thing is clear ..... life is never still, but always moving, always
changing, and that, unsurprisingly, is no less true of churches!
Here at the Bridge Church we have recently begun experimenting
with new ways worshipping, using modern, computerized equipment.
It has enabled us to broaden our repertoire of hymns and worship
songs, and also to enhance the overall experience of worship by the
more effective use of ‘visual aids’ – providing images to help us pray,
or to tell Bible stories. But this is only the beginning of a much more
radical experiment. We hope to introduce, alongside our normal
morning service at 10.30, another, shorter, more informal, more
‘effervescent’ act of worship at 9 o’clock...an act of worship
specifically focused on the needs of families and children, and using
our new ‘computer wizardry’!
A great deal of planning and preparation has already gone on, and we
hope to make some final decisions very soon. When and if things do
get off the ground, we would love to invite you, and your family, to
come and share this time with us. Maybe ‘traditional worship’ is
something that leaves you cold. Or bewildered. Maybe you’ve tried
it and long for something different. If so, come and see what we
have to offer. Watch out for more information around the town, and
maybe in ‘Otley Matters’ too!
Interested in joining Yorkshire’s
most active CLIMBING CLUB
The VCCC was formed in 2002. It’s aim then was to give beginners an
opportunity to pursue the sport once they had completed their indoor
training.
Since then the club has thrived and now attracts a variety of climbers.
From beginners to experienced ‘E’ graders, young and old, male and
female, those out for a gentle climb to those who push their grade.
We still encourage all to join and try to ensure our hectic schedule will
appeal, whatever your ability. We climb every Wednesday evening and
Sunday throughout the year, climbing indoors whenever the weather
dictates. From March to October we will have at least one weekend
event a month, heading into Wales or the Lake District and for those
whose partners don’t climb, one of these events is a family weekend,
with a mixture of walking and/or climbing.
Our Membership find other common interests, such as winter and Alpine
climbing. Several of our members regularly head up to Scotland for
weekend training, ready for that summer Alpine trip.
Key to our club is communication. Our website has
been developed with this in mind, allowing
members to log on and see our events, sign up to
attend or just check out who is attending. With
test updates you’ll never turn up at an event with
nobody to climb with again.
Membership is a mere £15 per annum and includes
Club membership to the BMC & 10-15% discount at
most outdoor shops.
Watch the website; our full 2009 schedule will be
loaded soon, full of Grit, Limestone, sports routes,
weekend and social events.
After the hectic schedule in December, Otley Brass Band held a concert
in St Paul’s Church, Shipley with a wide range of musical styles
performed before an appreciative audience.
Last year (2008) was Otley Brass Band’s 35th anniversary and they
celebrated in style with wins at the Wharfedale Music Festival and
Hardraw Scar Brass Contest, the release of their debut CD and supporting
Otley Little Theatre in the sell-out production of ‘Brassed Off’.
April will see the inaugural ‘Otley Brass Festival’. The Challenge was laid
down by the Mayor of Otley, for invited brass bands to come to Otley and
compete against each other. Held in the Civic Centre on Sunday 26th
April, this will be an entertainment contest with each band taking to the
stage to perform a 30 minute program.
Otley Brass Band is proud to announce that it has secured funding from
the National Lottery (Awards for All) to assist with acquiring assets for
the new, development group, WHARFE BRASS. This great news means
that new music, provision of instruments and running costs are now
covered.
The taster sessions for Wharfe Brass have been well attended, attracting
people with a wide range abilities to come along, from a mother and son
playing together, to someone who hasn’t picked up an instrument for
over 30 years and wants to start playing again.
The primary aim of Wharfe Brass is to encourage participation and
enjoyment in brass band music as well as securing the long term future
of the band. The band aims to attract enthusiastic local players of all
ages and ability from the surrounding area.

OTLEY Athletic Club
Are you a runner Do you want to meet like-minded people
Many people join a club to do just that – meet other runners.
Chris Carver of Otley Athletic Club is just one example. He
joined his local club in 1997 and now he is about to take on the
biggest challenge of his life. On 23rd May he will travel, on
foot, from Otley to London, for Orchid, the only UK charity to
focus entirely on the male-specific cancers: prostate, penile
and testicular.
For Chris the challenge is to run the 218 miles as quickly as
possible. Chris says “I’ll be taking part in the Commonwealth
Ultra Running Championships in September and I need a
challenge to keep me fit and motivated before then so I am
taking this very seriously and I don’t want to let my sponsors
down.“
On the road to London he plans to attack the British record for
200 miles, which is 38 hours 22:15 and also set an inaugural
record for running from Leeds to London. All this seems
remarkable when one considers that he suffered from testicular
cancer himself and later had part of his right lung removed due
to cancer.
Orchid also need funds to improve education about cancer so
that symptoms can be recognised and medical attention sought
early when treatment is easier. For too long male-specific
cancers have been under-funded and under-supported as far as
research and awareness are concerned.
Raising funds will be no mean feat. “With a target of £2000,
I’ll need all the help I can get. Just a few pounds would help
me get closer to my target.”
You can help Chris enormously by donating at
https://www.bmycharity.com/V2/otleytolondon
More information (including full details of the route) is available
from his blog at www.run-to-london.blogspot.com
OTLEY SCOUT & GUIDE
CHRISTMAS POST
The Otley Parish Scouts & Guides Parents & Friends Association
once again ran the Christmas Post in Otley. It was another
successful year with over 10,000 Christmas Cards collected,
sorted and delivered. The funds raised are used to run the
Scout & Guide HQ in Burras Lane. The Association would like to
thank all those involved and hope that they can increase the
number of cards to be delivered next year.
The Scout HQ provides a base for Otley Parish Scout Group,
Explorers, Guides and Brownies. The various groups that use
the Scout & Guide HQ are gaining in strength and the facilities
of the Scout HQ are vital to them. This facility enables the
young people to be involved both in the community and take
part on local and national events as well as their normal
activities.
The Scouts and Explorers helped with the Christmas Post. The
whole Scout Group and Explorers have been involved in
environmental projects on Otley Chevin and will continue that
involvement during this year. As part of their Duke of
Edinburgh’s Award individual Explorers are also working with
the Friends of Gallows Hill at the nature reserve.
National events include the Apex Challenge, last year held in
North Yorkshire, where three teams from the Explorer Unit
competed. They achieved creditable results at their first
attempt at the event.
The Scout HQ is also available for hire to groups active in the
community during the day and also for children’s parties.

GATEWAY to Success
Do you know that Voluntary Action-Leeds provides a large range of training courses for the
voluntary sector in the Metropolitan District of Leeds
“We can’t afford training” I hear you say! No problem. If your organisation has an annual
income of £20,000 or below you will qualify for a bursary. In other words, you complete a form,
provide evidence of your organisation’s income such as a bank statement along with a £10
returnable deposit and you have a free place.
“Voluntary Action –Leeds is located in Hunslet and that is too far to travel”
I hear you respond! OK, fair point but we can always try to arrange training in Otley if we know
that there is a need. Also, we provide bespoke training and this is delivered at the location of the
organisation. Bespoke training is made to measure training and is particularly useful for trustees
and management committee members. Again, bursaries are available if applicable.
“Well, what kind of training do you provide” I hope you are now wondering! We produce
a directory of training every quarter and here are just a few examples of training coming up in
March and April:
Basic Book-keeping
OTLEY ARTS CLUB
We are always looking for new members to join us on Wednesday evenings 7.30 to 9.30 pm. To
paint or draw or to hear a professional artist talk on his or her subject. All abilities are welcome.
Our last exhibition was opened by the Mayor Councillor Jim Spencer, shown here with his
daughter, Rosie, our exhibition secretary Judi Rich and the Club Chairman, Mark Burrow.
We have an interesting and varied programme through to the end of June including portraiture,
still life, artist led workshops on pastels, watercolours and drawing from a costumed model.
Otley Camera
club
With the recent AGM over it signals that
Otley Camera Club are now into the
second half of their season and with two
formal competitions left in the year the
attention focuses on the annual
exhibition.
Last year the club used both a new
location and format by choosing Otley
Courthouse and a well known guest
speaker; the response from Otley and
surrounding areas was very encouraging.
Many people joined the club members
last September to see and hear Derry
Brabbs give an entertaining talk. As the
session was so successful the club have
decided to expand on the theme, and
plan to use the facilities of Otley
Courthouse once again to hold both an
entertaining evening presentation, and
a more formal and extended showing of
work by the club members.
Before the exhibition we will be running
both a Natural History and General
Subject competition as well as the
opportunity to put images to music in
audio visual presentations, something
that technology can make easy to create
but that is a challenge to master
artistically. Once the evenings start to
get lighter the club will move to outdoor
meetings, but as we are just entering
spring that could be a way off yet.
During the year the members have
produce a wide variety of work and it
has been pleasing to welcome new
members to the club and see them take
part in the competitions and workshop
evenings. We continue to welcome new
members.
The club meet on Thursday evenings
in Prince Henry’s Grammar School
meeting at 7:00pm for a 7:15pm start
to find out more about the club.
BEHIND
CLOSED
DOORS
In these difficult financial times, voluntary sector agencies are feeling the
pressure. Behind Closed Doors continues to offer free, confidential support
and information to women whose lives have been affected by domestic abuse.
From the 1st April 2008 until 30th January 2009 we have received 326
referrals for support by comparison to 154 referrals received from the 1st
April 2007 to 30th January 2008. This equates to a 112% increase in
referrals. In the month of January 2009 alone we received 46 referrals and
the demand continues to increase. In addition 24 women have benefited
from two fifteen week recovery programmes this year.
Organisational running costs have been secured for the organisation’s
current structure until 2010, but clearly we are extremely under resourced
to meet such a high level of referrals. We pride ourselves on the quality of
service provision and the fact that we have never had to limit the time for
support. We have achieved PQASSO level 3 and we were awarded Investors
in People recognition in July 2007. In September 2008, we achieved the
Leeds Domestic Violence Services Level Three quality mark. In order to
maintain a quality service and meet increased demand we need to increase
our staffing levels.
We have recently launched a new look website: www.behind-closeddoors.org.uk
and we encourage local businesses to support our organisation
through advertising and donations on the site. There are lots of exciting
new ways to support Behind Closed Doors through the website. You can shop
through Ebay, buy greeting cards, perform online searches all in the ‘Shop’
section. There is also the opportunity to donate to Behind Closed Doors
online. This is a secure and quick way to offer support to the work we do.
Many thanks to the Nationwide Foundation for their recent grant of £5,000
towards the delivery of the outreach service. We have had fantastic support
from Otley and the surrounding community and this has made a positive
impact on service delivery and encouraged the BCD team spirit to remain
strong in times of adversity.
Ninth Otley Walking Festival
environment. Bugs, Beetles and Butterflies is a must for those with young
Otley Carnival
Aims to break records on a fine, sunny day !
Carnival Day ~ Saturday 20th June
After lasts year's record turn-out the Carnival Committee are
asking for even more support for the carnival activities this year.
In 2007 there were 47 entries in the Carnival parade and the
target this year is to top 50 floats, walking tableau, bands and
other participants in the largest town carnival in the region, if
not in Yorkshire.
We believe that it must be Otley's turn for a fine carnival day! In
2007 the carnival had be cancelled because the field was flooded
following torrential rain and last year the rain came down just as
the parade started from the auction mart. Even though the
parade continued in great spirit the weather certainly dampened
the field activities. Surely the 20th June 2009 is going to be a
beautiful day!
The Otley Carnival is a day for children and we hope that all the
schools will join in the parade as they did last year. We would
also ask local businesses, pubs, clubs, and local charities or other
organisations to enter something in the parade. To enter a float
or other parade activity contact Diana Allen on 01943-462498.
A major part of the activities for children are the stalls,
sideshows, slides and fairground attractions which take place in
the Bridge End/Otley Show field. Anyone can bring along a stall
or side show to raise funds for their organisation. Contact: June
Galling on 01943-467549.
The day also aims to raise funds for local charities and this year's
beneficiaries are:
Otley Action for Older People; Martin House (Otley Friends)
and Arthritic Care (Otley Branch)
A large part of the our income which goes towards the running of
the carnival and to the beneficiaries, comes from the street
collection during the parade and we would ask everyone
participating in the parade to take collection boxes to collect on
the route. In addition we are always keen to accept the help of
anyone willing to dress up and go into the crowd and shake a box
under the noses of those folk hiding at the back!
To add to the carnival day's celebrations, the Otley Rugby Club
are to hold a ' Picnic in the Park' an open air spectacular at the
rugby ground in the evening commencing at 7 pm.
Otley Cricket Club
Apart from only having 28 days three years out
of four February has little to commend it but
March is different altogether. It is only a good month away
from the start of the cricket season!
Only about 1% of our population take the same view and miss
the pleasure of watching cricket at Cross Green virtually
every day from April until mid September. The three senior
teams play on Saturdays and Sundays throughout the season
but over sixty youngsters play competitive cricket on
Sundays, Wednesdays and Fridays as well as practising in
between. New players of whatever age are always welcome,
the thriving junior section ensuring that the young people are
well supervised and coached, and a few more spectators to
join our loyal band will be particularly welcome. The modest
subscription of £10 a year entitles members to both watch
hours of cricket and enjoy the facilities of our well appointed
clubhouse. The teas are legendary and the beer isn't bad.
Wharfedale Hospital
The Editor asked me to give you the
real inside information about
Wharfedale Hospital and its public
Forum!
I’m very privileged to be one of two public members of this Forum
which meets twice monthly. The group is made up of hospital
management, two directors from NHS Leeds (the PCT) and four
Councillors. We discuss new developments and performance in all of
the hospital departments.
Did you know there are 65 consultants and specialist doctors working
at the hospital and more than 45 clinics
This includes the new chemotherapy service for cancer patients from
Wharfedale and the surrounding area who can now benefit from
having treatment closer to home.
Also, did you know the hospital has its own restaurant, open to
patients and the public from 8:45 am - 1:45 pm, serving breakfasts
and lunches including a daily “special” The hospital’s catering
department was recently awarded the top 5 Star rating for
excellence by Leeds City Council.
In a typical month, 11,000 patients receive treatment at the
hospital, from out-patient clinics to surgery. The hospital now
provides overnight stay and medical facilities for patients recovering
after their surgery.
Every year NHS hospitals are inspected by Patient Environment
Action Teams (PEAT). These teams include nurses, matrons, doctors,
catering and domestic staff, who award ratings from unacceptable
to excellent. Wharfedale Hospital received an “excellent in all
departments” in 2008, the top award. The 2009 inspection is due
shortly and I know that Matron and all her staff are determined to
achieve that “excellent” rating again.
If you need hospital treatment, you are entitled to choose, so make
sure you pick Wharfedale Hospital, they will look after you very well.
Now for the gossip, well I regard Wharfedale Hospital in its beautiful
setting as a caring lady and as you know, a man should never betray
a lady’s confidence, besides there isn’t anything to tell!
Prince Henry’s Grammar School
Makes history with new Headteacher appointment
Governors at Prince Henry’s Grammar School Specialist Language
College, Otley have appointed Mrs Janet Sheriff as their new
Headteacher. Mrs Sheriff will be the first female Headteacher in the 400-
year history of the school.
Starting her career as a Geography teacher, Mrs Sheriff is currently Acting
Headteacher of Intake High School Arts College in Leeds and will take up
her post in September 2009.
Chair of Governors, Ian Bearpark commented:
“It has become increasingly difficult for schools to recruit Headteachers.
However, Prince Henry’s attracted a strong field of candidates from all over the
UK and abroad. We were impressed with Mrs Sherriff’s drive, enthusiasm and
previous record of improving teaching, learning and staff development. The twoday
recruitment process involved Governors, advisors from Education Leeds and
a panel of students who questioned the candidates on their plans for the school.
We are delighted to welcome Mrs Sheriff to Prince Henrys and look forward to
meeting the challenges of the future.”
Prince Henry’s has gained a national reputation since becoming the first
Specialist Language College in the Leeds area ten years ago, and now has
partner schools in over a dozen countries. The 1400-pupil school last year
celebrated the 400th anniversary of the granting of its Royal Charter with
the opening of a new state-of-the-art Science building.
PRINCE HENRY’S GRAMMAR SCHOOL
"In a highly successful first for PHGS, 41 students and four staff of the
History Department visited Moscow and St Petersburg between 2nd – 7th
January 2009. A genuine trip of a lifetime, the students breathed life
into their historical studies with high points including the viewing of
Lenin in his mausoleum at Red Square, the panoramic view from St
Saviour's Cathedral in central Moscow, world class art at the Hermitage
museum in the former Winter Palace, and the overnight train between
Moscow and St Petersburg. Students were able to contrast the austere
Soviet-era architecture of a -20 degrees Moscow cityscape with the
baroque splendour of old St Petersburg; there were ample striking
examples of the "old" Russia coexisting warily with the "new". The
History Department would like to pay tribute to the exceptionallybehaved
students and supportive parents who made the trip possible,
and hopes that this visit will now join the Italy trip as a biennial event in
the school calendar".
Mr Andy Milner Curriculum Leader, History
This is our group in the palace square on the second day of our visit
to St Petersburg (location of bloody Sunday where 150 000 under paid
workers who built the palaces were protesting for better wages led by
Father Gapon 1000 of whom were massacred) outside the winter
palace (seat of the imperial court built mid 18th century) and home
of the tsars from Peter the great to Nicholas the II until the Bolsheviks
took over in October 1917. It has now become the second largest art
gallery called The Hermitage museum surpassed only by the Louvre
containing 1000 rooms and 2.7 million items.

St. Joseph’s~Otley
A Jewel in the Centre of the Town
I am frequently amazed at the number of visitors
to St. Joseph’s, many of whom are local residents,
who claim to have been unaware of the treasure
that is encircled by the Manor House, the Police
Station, the clinic and the River Wharfe…not to
mention the historical remains of one of the
palaces of the former Archbishop of York, on which
the school is sited! They are pleasantly surprised at
the extensiveness of our grounds and the beauty of
the setting.
We are proud of their comments which reflect the
welcoming and inclusive atmosphere which
pervades the school. Children, (of Catholic faith,
other or no faiths) parents, staff and governors are
all highly committed as they strive to achieve the
mission of our school:
‘This school exists for its pupils – to help their
spiritual, mental, emotional, physical and social
development.’
As you walk around the school on a typical day, you
may see:
• Reception investigating wildlife in their
outdoor provision.
Year 1 designing a salad during technology.
Year 2 animating the story of ‘Frog and Toad’.
Year 3 learning a new tune on their recorders.
Year 4 creating a dance routine for a festival.
• Year 5 playing maths’ games on the interactive
white board.
• Year 6 researching mountains on their laptops.
St. Joseph’s is a vibrant and
caring community
OTLEY ACTION FOR
OLDER PEOPLE
In uncertain times and a climate in which funding
is becoming increasingly difficult, Otley Action for
Older People has recently been successful in a bid
for funding from the Henry Smith Charity. The
Fund will pay for an Information, Outreach and
Volunteer coordinator for three years. OAOP are
delighted with the news which will enable the
charity to develop their work with older people in
the Otley area. Pippa Stevens, the Project
Manager, says that Otley Action for Older People is
also very pleased to be one of the Otley Carnival
charities this year. However, she pointed out that
the charity still needs to attract further funding in
order to maintain their service.
Would you like to help support Otley Action for
Older People OAOP is launching a “Friends of
OAOP” scheme through which members, their
families, friends and indeed anyone who would like
to support Otley Action for Older People, can pay
an annual donation (of any amount) to the charity.
By becoming a Friend of OAOP you will be helping
the charity’s work, supporting older people in this
area and helping the charity to plan and budget for
the future.
scheme or to find out more about OAOP’s services
A NEW Community Choir
A new community choir started in January at the
Otley Courthouse. Sessions are held in the main
hall, the Courtroom, a fantastic space for singing.
The relaxed, no pressure approach is great fun.
There is something for everyone as we sample songs
from a plethora of cultures, new and old.
The choir is led by Dave Stewart, an experienced
teacher and singer. He is a Natural Voice
Practitioner and so learning is by listening and
repetition, with no musical knowledge required, though if you have some, great!
“Everyone has a right to use their natural voice; singing makes us feel good, and it’s
through singing that we can get a sense of community.” We range from absolute beginners
to experienced choristers. Dave has already set up two community singing groups, one in
Skipton – the “Sheeptown Songsters” – and another in Barnoldswick – “Border Harmony”-
which are well established and going from strength to strength.
Community choirs provide a great opportunity for local people of any age and ability to
take part and have fun singing. New members are always welcome - there are no
auditions, there is no pressure, and no experience is necessary – just a love of singing in a
relaxed, friendly environment. The only requirement for joining is that you want to have
a go! “If you can talk, then you can sing!”
Otley Courthouse Choir meets each Tuesday in term time, 1.30-3.30pm at the Otley Courthouse.
For more information contact Otley Courthouse (01943 467466), or Dave (01943 461971), or
Yorkshire|Ç Bloom
fÑÜ|ÇzVÉÅÑxà|à|ÉÇ
Otley in Bloom (OiB) has again entered the Large Town category of the Yorkshire in
Bloom competition. This involves encouraging residents and businesses to do their
bit and help create a sense of civic pride. We are therefore urging everyone in Otley
to keep their outdoor spaces neat and tidy and perhaps add a splash of natural
colour to make a difference.
In 2008 Yorkshire in Bloom (YiB) awarded Otley Silver in the Large Town category and
the Whartons Primary School Silver in the Schools category. In the run up to the
judging day, of which the exact date will be publicised in the local press, OiB calls
for help from businesses by making sure that the front of their premises are free
from litter and that last years dead floral displays have been removed.
Businesses can also join the competitive spirit - and possibly get some free press
coverage - by entering for the Leeds in Bloom business competition.
In 2008 Leeds in Bloom handed out four awards to the following Otley based
businesses:
• Gold - Otley Golf Club
• Silver - Kirkgate Arcade, Courtyard Planters
• Bronze - Patsy’s Wicca Basket
One of last years winners commented in the Wharfedale & Airedale Observer; “If the
outside of your shop looks well cared for, people have the confidence that you care
about what is inside as well”. Call the Leeds Floral Initiative on 0113 2375 301 for
an entry form. A number of Otley businesses have already entered.
Keen gardeners and allotment holders can also compete by entering the Otley Town
Council Garden and Allotment competition. See the local press in summer for details.
Network of practical volunteers
OiB does a lot of ‘hands on’ work ranging from planting, digging and weeding to
clearing up throughout the town. Anyone who volunteers is free to help with
whichever projects he or she wants - there is no pressure to help out every time.
We are always keen to welcome new volunteers. If you would like to help Otley in
Bloom and their Taskforce and lend a hand once in a while, we’d love to hear from
you. Please call 0845 009 7642 and we’ll let you know when we are out and about.
Or, if you would like more information, please visit the OiB website,
20 years ago Otley Squash Club nearly closed. Today its first team is
topping the Harrogate Squash League. The final position will not be known
until April when the season ends. Until then every effort is being made to
win and achieve what 20 years ago was thought to be impossible.
Back then the Club had around 70 members – now it is double that though a few more are still
very welcome. The Club now has great facilities for playing the game and organises a range
of leagues and competitions. However, other than an annual BBQ there are no social
activities. The Club is now planning for the next 20 years!
is pleased to announce that the site has been stripped, cleaned and allocated to 8 happy
